Opting to take a holistic approach to care for your dog or any animal versus utilizing conventional medicine might seem too ”woo-woo” for some people. But not for Katya, Jenny, and this week's guest, Dr. Heather O'Leary, a holistic veterinarian with her own practice, TessaLoo Veterinarian Services, in Olivebridge, NY.Dr. Heather joins Katya and Jenny to share stories about how she came to be a holistic veterinarian and the animal who led her down this path. She also shares what practicing homeopathic medicine actually looks like, why it is both similar to and different from regular veterinary care. Noting the differences raises questions about whether or not this approach to animal care is equitable for rescues and shelters, for everyone. And this turns the conversation towards the best ways that dog or cat parents can advocate for their animal's care regardless of what kind of medicinal practice it is. Dr. Katie Woodley, BVSc, GDVCHM, cVMA, is the proud owner and holistic veterinarian of The Natural Pet Doctor. After watching her own husband develop an autoimmune disease and be told there was nothing they could do other than strong immunosuppressive medications, Dr. Katie went down the path of holistic medicine. Becoming certified in acupuncture, Chinese food therapy, and Chinese herbal medicine changed everything. She started The Natural Pet Doctor to provide pet parents with more resources for natural medicine advice and care so they had all of the options. Her mission is to ensure that all pet parents have access to herbal medicine, supplementation, and nutritional advice throughout their pet's lifetime that helps them thrive rather than just survive. Dr. Katie offers telehealth consultations to pet parents across the world, along with online education through her online programs, YouTube channel, Facebook, and Instagram. In today's episode, Dr. Katie and I discuss the important role that gut health plays in animals. Being heavily impacted by food, Dr. Katie shares what we should be feeding our pets, and what things to stay away from to ensure they live the healthiest lives. Jill Todd, DVM, CVA, CVCP, Holistic Veterinarian began her undergraduate training in Biological Science, Botany, and Agriculture – "the long route," if you ask her. However, she wanted to understand medicine at its core, so she started at plants. After earning her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine and a BS in Veterinary Science, Jill worked in a small animal emergency clinic then purchased Animal Care Clinic in San Marcos, Texas – a private practice that she owned and operated for 10 years. Jill talks about merging veterinary training with complementary therapies in this episode, including aromatherapy and hemp. When her dog, Tally Ho, was not recovering from surgery alone, Jill began experimenting with holistic therapies in desperation. They worked. This launched Jill into a whole new healing path. She went back to school and became certified in Veterinary Acupuncture and became a Veterinary Chiropractitioner with advanced training in Veterinary Cold Laser Therapy. Jill then sold her practice in 2008 and moved to the Pacific Northwest, where she launched J Todd Veterinary Acupuncture and Complementary Veterinary Medicine. While in the PNW, Jill discovered aromatherapy and essential oils. She started to use them at home, on herself and her animals. Jill found the power of plants could help relax and heal herself, her animals, and eventually her clients. Jill's search for healing animals has resulted in a robust and diverse skill set that expands far beyond veterinary qualifications. Her ability to read animals at a soul and energetic level – to pick up on their pain, anxiety, fear, or aggression – wasn't learned in school. It's an intuitive gift that remains one of life's beautiful mysteries, a gift that Jill humbly uses to serve animals. When she later discovered the powerful healing effects of hemp extract on her own animals, she knew it had to be incorporated into her practice. Today Jill works out of her home in Kirkland, WA healing animals, teaching acupressure and meridian touch therapy virtually, and virtually consulting worldwide. J Squared Healing was created to help heal animals energetically, starting with nutrition and using the best of both worlds, eastern and western veterinary medicine. Holistic veterinary medicine is Jill's passion and pride. What do you think when you hear the words ‘holistic', or ‘alternative'. What about "complimentary"? These are terms that can evoke quite strong opinions and responses in many vets one way or another, right? 100% honest - I was a bit apprehensive about doing this interview. I'm a natural skeptic, and I was worried that our guest was going to be a bit ‘out there" in his ideas, but I'm very glad that we took the time for this conversation. Turns out that, like me, and like you, Dr Gary Richter is a vet who cares about his patients and wants to find as many ways as he can to help them. He just happened to have found his niche in offering treatments that are a bit outside of the norm. And I must admit, it's made me very curious. Dr Gary Richter has been practicing veterinary medicine in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1998, after starting out his career in emergency. These days he runs a practice that focuses on the benefits of conventional and holistic treatment methods for the preventative and therapeutic care of pets as well as educating professionals and pet owners on the benefits of integrative care. Dr Richter was named Holistic Veterinarian of the Year for 2019 by the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association, is currently the President of the American College of Veterinary Botanical Medicine, and is a founding member of the Veterinary Cannabis Society. He's also the author of a book called The Ultimate Pet Health Guide. In our conversation, we dig up and chew on a few of the old bones on contention in our profession, like the role of alternative or complementary medicine in veterinary science, and the processed foods vs whole foods debate. Gary talks about integrative medicine as a practice model and as a business model, and he tells us about a few of his favourite and most useful therapeutic discoveries that he's made on his explorations. And of course we can't talk about alternatives to a Californian vet without talking about cannibis! Please enjoy this enlightening view of our profession from a slightly different angle. Dr. Katie Woodley’s career began as a traditional veterinarian. That eventually changed after her husband was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder. Soon after, her beloved German Shepard, Finn, had a seizure, which later turned out to be a malignant brain tumor. When comparing the side-effects of both allopathic and natural medicine on her husband and Finn, she realized that all pet owners should be aware of their holistic options. This led her to become certified in acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine (CHM). Through The Natural Pet Doctor, Katie provides integrative options for pet parents and strives to bridge the gap between holistic and traditional veterinarians in Colorado and beyond. In this episode, Dr. Woodley will delve deeper into her path towards integrative medicine, provide tips for pet owners who are seeking holistic treatment and shares important advice about expectations vs. reality when your dog is put on a holistic treatment plan for cancer.Links Mentioned in Today’s Show:The Natural Pet DoctorWebsite: https://www.thenaturalpetdoctor.com/Instagram:   https://www.instagram.com/thenaturalpetdoctor/Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/thenaturalpetdoctorAmerican Holistic Veterinary Medical Association (AHVMA)Website: https://www.ahvma.orgAHVMA Vet Finder:/ https://ahvma.org/find-a-holistic-veterinarianThe Dog Cancer Survival Guide by Dr. Demian Dressler and Dr. Susan EttingerThe Dog Cancer Survival Guide: Full Spectrum Treatments to Optimize Your Dog’s Life Quality and LongevityRelated Article:Dog Cancer Blog - https://www.dogcancerblog.com/articles/managing-pain/some-science-behind-acupuncture-for-cancer-pain/ by Dr. Demian Dresslerhttps://www.dogcancerblog.com/articles/managing-pain/dog-cancer-pain-acupuncture/ by Dr. Demian Dresslerhttps://www.dogcancerblog.com/articles/book-excerpt/cancer-treatment-for-dogs/ by The Dog Cancer Vet TeamAbout Today’s Guest, Dr. Katie Woodley:Dr. Katie Woodley earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame and her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Massey University in New Zealand. After graduating, she practiced veterinary medicine in NZ for a few years before she moved back to her home state of Colorado with her husband.Shortly after their return stateside, Dr. Woodley’s husband developed an auto-immune disease. He responded poorly to biologic drugs, so they decided to take a different approach to his treatment and began using homeopathy and his condition began to improve. She realized at that moment that she was doing a disservice to her animal patients by not offering the same holistic options to them. After this realization, she began down the integrative medicine route by becoming certified in acupuncture and earning a graduate diploma in Chinese Herbal Medicine for pets.Dr. Woodley now uses nutrition, acupuncture, herbal medicine, essential oils, and supplements, which she feels has changed her entire practice and treatment outcomes. She also feels that every animal can benefit from them by either achieving optimal health or at least feeling their best, even when they have a chronic illness or disease like cancer. Website: https://www.thenaturalpetdoctor.com/Instagram:   https://www.instagram.com/thenaturalpetdoctor/Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/thenaturalpetdoctorLinkedIn: https://bit.ly/2VyHbXIYouTube: http://bit.ly/thenaturalpetdoctor Dog Cancer Answers is a Maui Media production in association with Dog Podcast NetworkThis episode is sponsored by the best-selling animal health book The Dog Cancer Survival Guide: Full Spectrum Treatments to Optimize Your Dog’s Life Quality and Longevity by Dr. Demian Dressler and Dr. Susan Ettinger. And Dr. Richter is also a #1 Amazon Best-Selling author of the book, The Ultimate Pet Health Guide.Dr. Richter could you start the conversation with the difference between holistic and conventional veterinary medicine? Is it more cost effective than traditional? Are the words holistic, alternative and integrative all interchangeable? If a holistic practitioner is interested in working on the whole animal, so keeps in mind not only the medical history, but also genetics, nutrition, environment, family relationships, stress levels, and other factors, is more time usually spent with a holistic veterinarian vs a conventional? So, your practice uses both conventional and holistic modalities? What circumstances for each? What are some reasons why ppl should consider holistic treatments for their dogs?Since people are a lot more educated about alternatives now, and holistic veterinary medicine is becoming more accepted and mainstream, are you finding that more and more veterinarians are interested in this type of approach and are continuing their education? How would you address comments from people who say that holistic medicine is woo woo and not backed by true science?Even some strictly conventional vets argue that there aren’t really any studies on these therapies and that they don’t see many articles in mainstream veterinary journals. How would you respond?Would you agree that the foundation to health is nutrition? What do you recommend when it comes to feeding our dogs? How about supplements? Can you share the different types of holistic therapies and how they benefit our dog’s health?Do many people turn to holistic therapies as a last resort? That maybe western medicine could not heal their dog’s illness? Can you share some success stories of patients that have benefited with holistic medicine? What is your position on vaccines? How have you seen that cbd enhancing the lives of dogs? What does the future hold for holistic veterinary medicine? Are more integrated practices offering even more treatments or are they sticking to their current offerings? What’s the best way to find a holistic veterinarian?https://drgaryrichter.com/Social Media: @ultimatepetnutrtionResources mentioned by Dr. Richter:https://mypetthrives.com/https://holisticvetcare.com/https://www.ahvma.org/We appreciate our sponsor: Cannanine Be sure to use the code WAG20 for 20% Off + Free Shipping. Gregori Lukas shares the evolution of pet food.   After working with a Holistic Veterinarian, he began educating dog & cat owners on why raw food is best. He opened THEO Pet Grocery in Montclair, NJ to make these options available to pet owners by selling excellent products, in addition to sharing information on feeding a species appropriate diet & how it can increase the health and longevity of our pets. His store is partly named after his dog Theo, but also yields a significant message with it’s acronym: The Healthy Evolutionary Options .   Gregori also created a large facebook group called Holistic Animal Advice and Raw Feeding - THEO Pet Grocery to discuss and spread awareness of the latest in the pet food industry, alongside multiple Holistic Veterinarians.   He talks about how the old ways of the pet food industry has really caused a lot of illness in our animals and it's evolved to what it is today, with the raw food movement.   Erin asks the tough question of why most Veterinarians don’t advise we feed Raw Food. Thanks to Gregori, more information is being shared to educate all of us on the immense benefits of feeding fresh. The two talk about their favorite brand on the market currently, called Answers. Erin feels it’s an excellent start to switching your dog to fresh food.   In addition, Gregori talks about the various ways we unknowingly introduce our pets to dangerous disease causing toxins and how there are safe alternatives we can replace those with.   Provided below is a link to help you find a Holistic Vet in your area. Some integrate both Eastern & Western medicinal methods to help the symptoms your pet is experiencing.   Erin thanks Gregori for taking part in My Empower Project where he ENLIGHTENS us, EMPOWERS pet owners to do your own research, encourages how we must EMBRACE the need to change, & EMBARK on stepping out of the norm, for own precious pets. They are family, and we are their entire world.   When you visit Theo Pet Grocery either in person, or order online, be sure to tell Gregori & his employees that Lilly’s mom Erin sent you, or type it in the notes when ordering J Quotes:   “Always remember can, never remember can’t.”   “When we learn, we just move forward. ***About This Episode**** Today we’re talking about our senior animal pals, not only how our lives change as we minister to their needs but also the physical, mental, spiritual and emotional toll that care taking can take on us caretakers. With advances in veterinary medicine, the addition of holistic care and alternative modalities such as acupuncture and chiropractic, and general improvements in how we care for our animals, it follows that pets are living longer. Instead of simply being a dog, a cat, a rabbit or a horse that is kept outside and left to face the elements on their own, our animals are now valued family members who share our homes. Having more time with our beloved animals brings us much joy, yet because of their increased life span, living with and tending to them has gotten more complicated. This brings along its own special set of problems that weren’t as prevalent a decade or so ago. ***Episode Resources*** Buster Brown - Best Dog In Town - https://www.amazon.com/Buster-Brown-Best-Dog-Town/dp/1544674015?keywords=jennifer%20o%27brien&qid=1547523099&sr=8-3&ref=sr_1_3&fbclid=IwAR3ilhDURk0kpqmTbSqWy1x-WHH_C7TSIg5SIgVbc0IOY1-cYzD656DixI8 TTouch - http://www.ttouch.com Senior Pet Care FAQ - https://www.avma.org/public/PetCare/Pages/Caring-for-an-Older-Pet-FAQs.aspx Financial Aid for Pets - https://bestfriends.org/resources/financial-aid-pets VetFinder: Find a Holistic Veterinarian - https://www.ahvma.org/find-a-holistic-veterinarian/ ***Support This Podcast*** If this podcast has inspired or informed you or expanded possibilities in your world, a contribution would be a deeply appreciated way to show your support.
