In this FETCH First Friday episode, Stacey Renphrey of Hozho Hounds, and I talk about Lucky's and my journey moving back to the UK from Mexico! But, specifically, we'll talk about how the FETCH framework helped me prepare Lucky, and handle some little health blips that showed up once we arrived. If you're new here and wondering what FETCH is, FETCH stands for Fresh food, Energetics, Targeted approaches, Curiosity, and Holistic health. These are what Stacey and I see as the pillars to our dogs' health, and it's the same framework we use in our canine nutrition consultations to help our clients support their dogs to experience optimal health. Today, you'll learn how I used Lucky's energetic pawprint to target supplements to support him before travel and to handle an upset tummy. You'll also hear how an understanding of the Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine body clock, and meridian pathways, clued me into what Lucky's itching and zoomie hour were showing me, and how I was able to support him. And, I'll share about what I found most helpful in navigating the stress of international travel with a dog - we are talking planes, trains, automobiles, and chuck in an overnight ferry, to boot!If you enjoy this way of approaching your dog's health journey, come join our free Facebook group, FETCH First Light, and be surrounded by a community of likeminded folks who want to integrate evidence-based nutrition with spiritual wisdom in order to create optimal health for their dogs - and themselves!FETCH First Light Facebook Grouphttps://facebook.com/groups/fetchfirstlightNot sure what your dog's energetic pawprint is? Does your dog have chronic yeast outbreaks, ear infections, or tummy problems that go away after a round of antibiotics, only to come right back after you stop using them? Have you spent hundreds, if not thousands of dollars at the vets, on supplements, and trying every diet imaginable, but you still can't get on top of your dog's symptoms? Then you NEED to listen to this conversation I had with veterinarian Dr Neal Loh. Dr Neal is a holistic and integrative vet based in Perth, Western Australia, who uses Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine approaches to support his clients and get to the root cause of health imbalances. Honestly, Dr Neal gives us a TCM 101 course in this episode, it is so chock full of helpful information! * He shares his journey into both conventional veterinary medicine, and why he switched to a Traditional Chinese Medicine approach. * He also talks about how stress - ours and our dogs' - is at the heart of so many health challenges our dogs face * And we do a deep dive into one of the most common and pervasive pathogens in TCVM: dampness. * You'll learn what dampness is, where it comes from, and how it contributes to some of the most common conditions, including yeast, chronic ear infections, as well as chronic and sporadic gut problems. And you'll also learn how food therapy approaches can be really helpful in supporting your dog if they suffer from dampness. It's really exciting for me to introduce you to today's guest, Hannah Zulueta! Hannah is a certified canine nutritionist, and is currently studying to become a doctor of acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Herbalism for the human end of the leash. You may know Hannah from her popular blog and Instagram account, @dailydogfoodrecipes where she shares how she applies a Traditional Chinese Medicine approach to health and feeding her own dogs, Maggie, Orbit, and Mr Higgins. Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine, or you might see it abbreviated as TCVM is really coming into the mainstream of holistic dog care. I invited Hannah to come and have a conversation with me to unpack what this really means and looks like on a practical level. Something that I just love about Hannah's approach to feeding your dog, and to TCVM, is her focus on simplicity. She says that if you can feed yourself and your family, you can feed your dogs, too, and I wholeheartedly agree. We talk about Hannah's own journey into TCVM and canine nutrition, starting with how her family fed her dogs while growing up in Papua, New Guinea. She shares the fundamentals of Traditional Chinese Medicine, where it came from as a medicine for the common people, and how you can begin applying its principles to your own dog's health to restore harmony. Hannah also addresses how she would approach the top health issues that you told me you have with your dogs: allergies, yeast, and anal glands, oh my!I absolutely LOVED talking with Hannah. She is so wise, and gracious with her energy. I know you're going to love this episode, too! To learn more about Hannah and her TCVM approach to canine nutrition, visit her blog: https://dailydogfoodrecipes.com, or connect with her on Instagram https://instagram.com/dailydogfoodrecipes If you'd like to dive a bit deeper into TCVM, Hannah has a wonderful community with mini-courses on specific topics related to caring for your dog with TCVM. She went on to Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine located in Grafton, Massachusetts, receiving her DVM in 1991. Her career since graduation has been dedicated to working with sport horses all over the United States. She spent 6 years at a busy equine referral clinic in Illinois where she focused primarily on lameness. This move exposed her to the most advanced diagnostic and therapeutic techniques available in the sport horse industry. She was able to refine her skills in all imaging modalities and attend clinics devoted to lameness diagnosis and treatment.Dr. Heart began her training in Acupuncture at the Chi Institute of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine in 2003 with Dr Huisheng Xie DVM, MS, PhD. She completed her certification in Veterinary Acupuncture in 2005. She is currently working on her Masters in Chinese Herbal Medicine at the Chi Institute. Dr. Julia Ledger-Muennich discovered her interest in veterinary medicine while working with rescue animals as a child. She got her veterinary degree from Justus Liebig University in Glessen Germany in 2007. Afterwards, she worked in an equine clinic on the overnight shift while completing her thesis work, which involved ultrasound studies of the udders of mares. She then went to England to work in an equine practice. She left that practice to start her own, which continues to this day. She was certified in chiropractic in 2008 and veterinary acupuncture in 2011. She is certified in Chinese Veterinary Herbal Medicine by both the World Association of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine and the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society. She is also certified in Tui Na. In addition, she is accredited by the FEI to work as a treating veterinarian at sanctioned events. Please enjoy this conversation with Dr. Julia Ledger-Muennich as we discuss her education, her first years in practice, her transition to a holistic-only practice, and how she is constantly looking for opportunities to further her knowledge and skills.

Solo equine vets make up 37% of all equine veterinarians. Many people think of group practice as the only way to go after graduation, but if you want to forge your own path as an equine veterinarian, you can do it! And you won't be alone in doing so. While not every aspect of solo practice is perfect, there are many upsides to owning your own business and that is what we discuss today. My guests are awesome human beings and amazing colleagues. Many oncologists are skeptical of integrative medicine, even though pet parents REALLY want to use it. Kendra Pope is no skeptic. She's a board-certified oncologist who practices in Red Bank, New Jersey. She uses oncology, but also acupuncture, herbs, and nutrition to fight dog cancer. Her results speak for themselves. She joins us to discuss the treatments she uses in her own practice that she learned about AFTER her oncology training. Whether you're interested in treatments they're using in Europe (and not here), like mistletoe, how to feed your dog, or how to put together your team, this is a must-listen episode. Episode #012Dr. Karlene Stange is the Founder of Animas Animals, which provides Natural and Complimentary Medicine for Animals. Karlene attended Fort Lewis College in Durango and continued into veterinary school, graduating in 1985 as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Colorado State University. In 1996, she began her study of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine, and subsequently traveled to China for advanced study, including Chinese herbal medicine, Tui-na, and Food Therapy. Before she could say the word veterinarian, Karlene knew she wanted to be an “animal doctor.” All her teachers discouraged her, saying, “They don't let girls be veterinarians.” Fortunately, my mother said I could do whatever I wanted. She followed her inner guidance, in spite of continued opposition, and earned an interview for veterinary school in 1981. At the interview she was asked, “How is a little girl like you going to handle horses?” She replied, “If 1200 pounds of horse does not want to do what you want it to do, it doesn't matter whether you weigh 100 pounds or 200 pounds. Managing horses requires skill, not size.” Thankfully, she followed her dream. Dr. Stange is the author of The Spiritual Nature of Animals. Her experiences as a country vet drove her to research numerous spiritual traditions to answer difficult questions about animal consciousness and the bond between humans and the creatures with whom we share our planet. She shares wisdom from many cultures, and from the creatures themselves, to help us better understand the spiritual nature of animals. Her evolved understanding offers readers a unique interpretation expressed through a surprisingly seamless blend of science/medicine, spirituality, and personal experience. https://www.AnimasAnimals.comSupport the show (https://paypal.me/EpicPodcast?locale.x=en_US)

The still hazy legal status of cannabis makes advising clients about it darn near impossible. Dog lovers are left to figure out what to do on their own. With only product manufacturers to advise them, they can easily get bad, incomplete, or inaccurate advice. Cannabis in Veterinary Medicine a Critical Review, a brand-new publication, helps professionals sort fact from fiction. One of the paper’s authors, Dr. Trina Hazzah, returns to discuss their work. She is an integrative veterinary oncologist and co-founder of the Veterinary Cannabis Society, a non-profit that helps veterinarians and pet parents access credible, realistic, legally sound advice around medical cannabis use. In the paper, Dr. Hazzah and her co-authors lay out a road map of a sort for practicing veterinarians. They go over the description and structure of the endocannabinoid system, the pharmacologic effects of the active compounds, the potential uses, and the toxicities of cannabis. The purpose of the paper, and of this show, is to help clinicians get an overview and grounded understanding of the compounds so they can help their patients without reading thousands of papers on PubMed. The authors also address the very real issues around legal status and offer feedback and ideas for how to work with clients safely and legally. A must-listen show for anyone practicing veterinary medicine or asking their veterinarian about cannabis or CBD use. When fifteen-year-old Trina Hazzah got a part-time job cleaning animal cages, she had no idea she would become a veterinary oncologist, much less co-found the Veterinary Cannabis Society. Two advanced degrees, a journey through Chinese Herbal Medicine, and a nonprofit later, she now has a waiting list of new patients. Dr. Hazzah will do anything to support her patients’ quality of life, quantity of life, or both. Whether it’s fighting for the right to prescribe cannabis, pursuing genetic profiling of tumors, or wearing her standard chemotherapy or radiation oncologist’s hat, she is right there and ready to give her patients the best possible treatment outcomes. n this episode of The Woof Meow Show from May 19th, 2018, Don learns about the Eastern or Chinese Medicine approach to nutrition from Dr. Michael Munzer from All Creatures Acupuncture. Last year Dr. Munzer completed a certification program in Chinese Food Therapy from the Chi Institute of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine. He discusses the critical differences in the Chinese Medicine approach to nutrition as compared to what he learned in veterinary school where the approach was what is the bare minimum of nutrition necessary to sustain life. Chinese medicine looks at food more deeply for each individual patient. This can make the method better suited for treating specific health issues. Tune in and learn about this interesting approach to feeding your pet for optimal health from Dr. Michael Munzer.
