Today's show features a conversation with Suman Kamath, founder of Toby's Hope, and her charity partner Cesar Pazo. Toby's Hope was founded to help provide resources for people dealing with dogs with lymphoma. The goal is to reach diverse communities including those where a language or culture barrier might make it more difficult than usual to find the needed resources during such stressful times. The organization helps with providing grants to people to offset medical costs, as well as online and in-person support groups for all those dealing with what can be a difficult and expensive disease. While Toby's Hope currently serves just Washington pet parents, and only focuses on dogs with lymphoma, their hope is to branch out and provide care for additional cancers as the organization grows. When Oncotect first reached out to me and offered a test for my dog Kimberly, I was like "Sure!" and didn't think too much of it. Then the email with the results hit my inbox and my heart sank. I didn't want to open it. Was it better that I just not know? What if she has cancer? I did open it, breath held, and thank goodness her chances for having cancer based on this test were categorized as "low"I know how well I care for my pets, but I'm aware that cancer can still pop up to anyone at any time. Some breeds are more predisposed as well, so we need to be extra vigilant for them.If you'd like to have Oncotect cancer screening done for your dog, check the show notes for all the links!Send us a text

Researchers say the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature is a better indicator of heat stress. Also, cancer is the leading cause of death in dogs. A new vaccine has increased survival rates in clinical trials, offering hope for dogs and humans.Yes, It's Hot. But How Hot?Much of the country has been enduring a heat wave this week, with millions sweating from Maine to the Midwest. But describing exactly how hot it is—and when temperatures become hazardous—can be challenging. Beyond the basic temperature, there's the heat index, invented in 1978, which incorporates humidity measurements and is supposed to give a better indication of how a person might feel outside. Some health researchers are calling for more attention to a different type of temperature measurement known as the wet bulb globe temperature. It tracks temperature, humidity, and sunlight, and improves upon the heat index standard.Umair Irfan, senior correspondent at Vox, joins SciFri's Kathleen Davis to talk about measuring temperatures and protecting yourself from extreme heat. Plus, they discuss other stories from the week in science, including advances in tornado prediction, a delay in a return flight from the International Space Station, and a newly-described horned dinosaur that once roamed the US.A Canine Cancer Vaccine Shows Promising ResultsDogs are by far the most popular pet in the United States: 62 million households have at least one. They are humans' best friends, after all. Sadly, cancer is the leading cause of death in domestic dogs. And when a pet gets sick, it can be devastating for the entire family.Lucky for dogs (and their people), there may soon be a breakthrough in treating canine cancer: a vaccine that can slow and even stop the spread of tumors. Clinical trial results are quite promising so far, increasing 12-month survival rates in dogs with some cancers from 35% to 60%. The research team also reports that in many dogs the vaccine shrinks tumors.Joining guest host Kathleen Davis to talk about this novel therapy is Dr. Mark Mamula, professor of medicine at the Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut. Mamula discusses this important breakthrough, and possible future applications for human cancer therapies.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. SERIES 2 EPISODE 140: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: The story that Robert F. Kennedy Junior wants football quarterback Aaron Rodgers to be his Vice President has now mutated from the ludicrous real life realms of the proverbial idiocracy, to shameful and disgusting and disqualifying and it is now SO bad that he will be lucky, WHEN this is over – IF it is ever over – if he still has a football career. It is THAT bad. CNN's Pamela Brown now reveals that nearly ELEVEN years ago – she was introduced to Aaron Rodgers at a post-Kentucky Derby party and, quoting Brown's story: “Hearing that she was a journalist with CNN, Rodgers immediately began attacking the news media for covering up important stories. Rodgers brought up the tragic killing of 20 children and 6 adults by a gunman at Sandy Hook Elementary School, claiming it was actually a government inside job and the media was intentionally ignoring it.” The WORST conspiracy theory of them all. THE worst. The Alex Jones stuff. The unforgivable, Rorshach test for insanity, inhumanity, depravity. And Aaron Rodgers not only failed it, he failed it nearly eleven years ago, and he failed it, and he failed it VOLUNTARILY – he was the one who brought it up, TO a reporter, TO a reporter who has somehow restrained herself from reporting it for nearly eleven years. And the nightmare-within-a-nightmare is: Aaron Rodgers is (or at best was) a Sandy Hook denier. And frankly I don't know if, in RFK Junior's eyes, that fact ELIMINATES Rodgers as a potential running mate, or… it clinches the spot for him. Also: The GOP has a new Biden Impeachment Plan: DON'T Impeach Biden. Don Lemon! You effed up! You trusted Musk! The Trump Mafia is celebrating the Georgia judge throwing out a handful of charges, but of course if he were going to throw out the whole case over Fani Willis on Friday, why would he bother to cull a few indictments now? And Alina Habba Dabba Do has the nerve to joke about Fani's name. B-Block (21:08) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: After Marjorie Taylor Greene may have baited President Biden into misidentifying murder victim Laken Riley as "Lincoln" (or at best she made exactly the same mistake the president did), Trump has autographed a photo of the poor woman in which he has written her name - and MISSPELLED IT. NBC's Ken Dilanian gets further and further into the right wing talking points on the disastrous Hur hearing. And Nancy Mace, who shamed fellow rape victims and herself by endorsing Trump after the E. Jean Carroll verdicts, is still demanding George Stephanopoulos apologize for what... SHE did. C-Block (30:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: In a brand new edition, this sounds like a terrifying and tragic story about another one of my dogs - my goofy boy Ted - until you get to the end where it turns out I'm just a lucky idiot and Ted's fine.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Timely update! Live event on May 7!Have a listen now to hear my interview with Mari Maeda -someone who has deep connections with their dogs, which then directs her to a complete shift in daily life. Meet Mari Maeda, founder of Canine Cancer Alliance, who like many of us, only wanted the best care for her dogs, not realizing this love would put her on a path to revealing what I call – a new life purpose. Sometimes your life purpose at the moment simply means you're using your skills for positive impact to those you love. We don't get to pick and choose when we're going to have a meaningful connection with something, no, in fact if we knew ahead of time we'd probably say, “No Way!” But that's how life works, and if we're open to the magic happening behind the scenes then we get to find greater satisfaction and meaning than we ever could have planned for. Mari's connection with her dogs ultimately brought her to the unescapable union of career and animals: medical researcher meets canine cancer. Mari's inspiring story helps us all think outside the box when we know there is something to be done, but no one is doing it. In this episode you'll hear: ~The value of combining your connections, skills, and passions into one project ~A peek into the world of canine cancer research – and no, it won't make you cry! About Mari: After losing her dogs to cancer, Mari started reaching out to cancer researchers to get them interested in helping find cures for dogs. She started a nonprofit foundation, Canine Cancer Alliance, which is supporting research studies to find more effective and affordable cancer treatments. She lives in Bellevue and Shaw Island, Washington with her husband and three rumbunctious golden retrievers, Momo, Mimi and Indy. 5K Event link: enddogcancer.org/love Organization link: https://www.ccralliance.org/
Nationwide Pet Insurance has released several white papers looking at trends in dog cancer diagnoses. In this episode, Dr. Jules Benson explains their paper “About the Size of It: Scaling Canine Cancer Risk.” First they looked at the likelihood of developing cancer based on the size of the dog, and found that it appears larger dogs are at higher risk. They then looked at some of the most common cancer types in dogs, and the trend remained consistent with one exception, mammary cancer. They also looked at how size affected how old dogs were when they were diagnosed. Dr. Benson explains that this data does not mean that large dogs will get cancer and small dogs won't. Instead, this data helps us to know which dogs are at the most risk of different cancers, as well as when we should start being concerned about signs that appear. This work can help veterinarians and owners to catch cancer earlier, increasing the chance of successful treatment. About Dr. Lori Cesario: Dr. Lori Cesario is a Board-Certified Veterinary Oncologist who is dedicated to providing families with high quality information about dog cancer. Dr. Cesario runs the Canine Cancer Academy (https://www.caninecanceracademy.com/ (https://www.caninecanceracademy.com/)) Laura and Dr Cesario discuss the common myths and misconceptions surrounding canine cancer. Dr. Cesario busts some common myths such as: can you tell if a tumor is benign just by looking at it? Can you tell if a cancer has spread without proper tests (x-rays, samples, ultrasounds, etc.) from a vet? Is cancer transmissible? Are certain breeds more or less prone to cancer? Can diet affect the prevalence of cancer? They talk about how important it is to realize that dogs express pain differently than humans might expect. As owners, we want our dogs to be as healthy and happy as possible. We have to understand that dogs are really good at hiding their pain, and should therefore take any subtle signs of discomfort seriously (especially with symptoms such as limps). It's also important to understand the earlier signs of nausea, including things like decreased appetite, increased drooling, and lip-smacking. Dr. Cesario explains how dogs process chemotherapy different than humans do, which is important to keep in mind as humans decide how to treat their dogs for cancer. Dr. Cesario then talks about the effect of early spay/neuter on different types of cancer.
About Dr. Lori Cesario: Dr. Lori Cesario is a Board-Certified Veterinary Oncologist who is dedicated to providing families with high quality information about dog cancer. Dr. Cesario runs the Canine Cancer Academy (https://www.caninecanceracademy.com/ (https://www.caninecanceracademy.com/)) Laura and Dr. Cesario talk about what to do if you find a lump on your dog (and how frequently you should evaluate your dog to make sure everything is normal). By establishing a baseline, you'll be able to more easily notice when something abnormal appears. The best way to make sure you are monitoring and recording your dog's lumps and bumps is to use a body map of your dog. Dr. Cesario explains what a body map is, and how using one is helpful for both you and your vet. Laura asks about warts (which appear outside the skin as opposed to cancerous masses) - Dr. Cesario explains that the most important thing for your dog is to get a diagnosis for any sort of lump, whether it looks like a skin tag, a bug bite, or a wart. Fortunately, diagnosing a lump on your dog's skin is often pretty quick. After taking the first step of getting a diagnosis, you can then take the next steps, whether it's treating the mass or continuing to monitor it. Laura and Dr. Cesario discuss how treating skin tumors can work (and how an incomplete surgery can leave dangerous, cancerous cells behind). When you treat your dog for cancer, it has to be a comprehensive treatment so that the cancer doesn't re-emerge. That's why getting the diagnosis right in the first place is so critical to your dog's health. They talk about treatment options, including Dr. Cesario's thoughts on holistic treatment. Treatment can vary for each dog's situation, so treatment options really depend on the dog. Treating cancer often comes down to balancing health with quality of life for the dog. Dr. Cesario gives some general cost estimates for treating canine cancer, listing cost based on the type treatment. She also goes over how much the treatment options can extend your dogs life (and how variable and unpredictable that time estimate can be).
