Geothermal emissions of methane and CO2 could soon be put to good use.  Work is underway in Rotorua to create livestock feed from the gasses in world-first research that could net the country $500 million by 2045.  The feed would be created from protein rich biomass, produced when microorganisms feed off greenhouse gas emissions captured from geothermal power stations.  Upflow Business and Innovation Director Andy Blair told Mike Hosking that they're testing if the system is scalable, to see how they can make it economically viable and sustainable for the commercial market.  The feed is unlikely to be bulk food, he said, but additives instead, since it's not a cheap thing to produce.  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The feed industry and regulatory officials are challenging media reports alleging the HPAI virus has spread to dairy cattle as a result of the consumption of chicken litter on farms. Neither the U.S. Department of Agriculture nor the Food & Drug Administration have found a link to HPAI virus transmission in dairy cattle through chicken litter. Wild migratory birds are widely thought to be the likely cause of the transmission.FDA also has stated that chicken litter does not pose an animal or public health threat warranting usage restrictions. To find out more about what's going on with dried poultry litter and HPAI, we catch up with Austin Therrell, executive director of the Association of American Feed Control Officials, to talk about why the link between the feed ingredient and HPAI in dairy cattle is unlikely. This episode of Feedstuffs in Focus is sponsored by United Animal Health, a leader in animal health and nutrition. Food circularity: Time to disrupt linear model of current food system?

Feedstuffs in Focus

Of the food we grow annually, 40% is lost or wasted. Globally, food loss and waste is responsible for 10% of greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, rates of food insecurity continue to skyrocket. In 2022, nearly 828 million people faced acute food insecurity, an increase of more than 60% since 2019.These numbers are only expected to grow. So are there opportunities and for that matter reasons to disrupt the linear model of our current food system? In this episode of Feedstuffs in Focus, we revisit a presentation that Pete Pearson, Senior Director, Food Loss and Waste for the World Wildlife Fund, gave as part of our recent Food Waste to Animal Feed Virtual Conference. He talks about the introduction of circularity into food cultivation and production. Circularity considers the entire life cycle of food, including its societal and environmental costs, and supports alternative models for waste prevention and upcycling.View our recent Food Waste to Animal Feed Virtual Conference in its entirety, click on this link  or visit Feedstuffs.comThis episode has been sponsored by United Animal Health, a leader in animal health and nutrition. Food waste and loss are a growing concern around the world. Food left in the fields. Food not pretty enough for supermarket display cases. The list goes on and on. All too often perfectly good food ends up in landfills or is left to rot in the field. But, is there a role for animal agriculture when it comes to possibly providing a solution to the food waste situation and, if so, what might that look like? Joining us in the episode of Feedstuffs in Focus to talk about food waste as an alternative animal feed ingredient is Dr. Jerry Shurson of the University of Minnesota. We also discuss a free online conference focused on fostering a discussion around the challenges and opportunities related to food waste for livestock. That conference is hosted by the University of Minnesota, University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University and Feedstuffs with the goal of communicating and educating those in the feed and feeding industries globally about the value of food waste for livestock in the backdrop of food, climate, and sustainability challenges. The conference will be held March 26, 27 and 28. The impact of the war in Gaza is ratcheting up on Israel, the US, and on the people of Gaza themselves. More than 30,000 are now dead - an unthinkable toll of Israel's offensive, since the October 7th Hamas attack. In an astonishing insight, UNRWA Chief Philippe Lazzarini tells Christiane the looming famine there is now so bad, that some people have been eating animal feed to survive. Now even that is running out. Then, the head of the Norwegian Refugee Council Jan Egeland tells Christiane that he is “shaken” by the “horrific conditions” he's seeing firsthand in Gaza. “We're really, really overstretched in this ocean of needs,” he says.  Meantime, Donald Trump reportedly has an old friend in town next week - Hungary's far-right leader Viktor Orban. They will have plenty to agree on, like their affinity with Vladimir Putin who Orban has courted publicly, and Trump has praised for his “strong control” of Russia. How will authoritarianism and Trump's admiration for these so-called strong men play with voters in November? Mary Trump, the ex-president's niece and clinical psychologist, gives Christiane her diagnosis on Trump's “strongman syndrome.”  Then, CNN's Will Ripley sees firsthand the deadly game of cat and mouse playing out with China off Taiwan's coast.  Also this hour, President Biden turned the hysteria about his age on its head this week, by attacking the advancing years of his political adversary, Donald Trump - who is only four years his junior. Media critic, columnist and academic Margaret Sullivan says enough is enough with the herd mentality coverage of Biden's age, because this election is about much more than “chasing clicks”.  In the Amanpour Archive, the moment Christiane witnessed people dodging sniper fire for the chance to find whatever fresh food they could during the 1990's siege of Sarajevo, which ended 28 years ago this week.   And finally, in the week that saw U.S. presidents both past and present at the Texas border - where the immigration crisis is a top election issue - a brand new HBO documentary delves into the often-dark history of the Lone Star State. "God Save Texas" is an adaptation of the book by the same name from Pulitzer Prize-winning author and journalist Lawrence Wright. He tells Christiane why Texas is so emblematic of the struggles at play in America ahead of the presidential election.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Farmers in Germany have been protesting about plans to cut subsidies on diesel. The cuts were introduced to fix a budget row after the German's government's budget was ruled illegal. The proposal has now been watered down so the subsidy on agricultural fuel will be gradually phased out but that's done little to reassure farmers. The long running row over wild camping on Dartmoor continues. One of the landowners has won the right to appeal to the Supreme Court over a ruling, from the High Court, that wild camping is allowed on Dartmoor. He argued that camping shouldn't be allowed because it isn't 'open air recreation' - which is permitted under the Dartmoor Commons Act. Increasing the supply of green energy is one of the major targets for the UK to reach its climate commitments. Wind and solar farms both contribute to that but getting the power to where its needed means more pylons and underground cabling being built, often through rural areas and that's causing concern. All week on Farming Today we've been looking at animal feed. Soya has become a staple in feed - it's high protein and relatively cheap, but it's imported and can come from areas of deforestation so farmers are looking for alternatives. We visit a feed-manufacturer in Aberdeenshire producing a soy-free animal feed, using oil seed rape as a source of protein. Insects are another possible source of protein. Farmers in the EU can now use them in animal feed, but it's not yet allowed here in the UK. We've been to the labs of FERA Science in York to meet scientists researching the use of insects in animal feed.Robots and AI technology at the heart of a vertical farm in Lincolnshire growing British strawberries mid winter.Presenter = Charlotte Smith Producer = Rebecca Rooney

Walkers in England and Wales are being blocked or obstructed in nearly 32,000 places - and face what access campaigners call 'a shocking and growing abuse and neglect of footpaths'. A BBC investigation found that councils which have responsibility for footpaths had 4,000 more access issues last year than the year before. Councils say 'funding constraints' limit what they can do and the government says funding for local government has increased by 6.5% year on year and that local authorities are best placed to decide how that money is spent. The Ramblers say they're shocked at the number of obstructions and The Open Spaces Society says pleading austerity isn't good enough. All this week we've been looking at animal feed. Soya is a high protein and relatively cheap ingredient in many feeds but it can come from areas where forests have been cut down to make room to grow it. We visit a feed supplier in Aberdeen which produces an alternative using oil seed rape, and we speak to an academic who's been working on a project to improve the traceability of soya.Anna Hill meets three women from three different generations, working together to produce organic beef on a small farm in Suffolk. She hears how two of them are first-time farmers, brought into agriculture by circumstance. The farm manger, a single mother, used to work in a concrete factory, but took a job on the farm to make ends meet when she was out of work. She later recruited her niece. Meanwhile the farm owner, now in her 80s, still does the paperwork, pays the bills and runs the business. It's a tale of co-operation, compassionate animal welfare, and faith in the strength of women to get the job done.Presenter = Charlotte Smith Producer = Rebecca Rooney

As farmers contemplate thousands of hectares under water, the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology reports that Autumn rainfall, between September and November for the UK last year was 22% above average, followed by a December which saw 70% above average rainfall for central & northern England and eastern Scotland.  The government's announced help is available for flooded businesses and properties but farmers cannot insure against flooded crops and some have said they'll stop growing food on land that's repeatedly flooded. We speak to an expert about how farmers and government can better deal with flooding in the future. All week we're exploring the topic of animal feed. Today we hear from a farmer who's invested £30,000 in cages to protect his cattle feed from starlings. Giant flocks of the birds have been eating the grain Bryn Jones near Oswestry feeds his dairy herd. He estimates it's already saving him tens of thousands of pounds in lost feed and is helping protect his herd from disease - and improving the milk yield of his cows.We often hear that people want their food to be welfare friendly, sustainably produced and farmers to be paid fairly for it. Last year the Food, Farming and Countryside Commission, or FFCC, launched a citizens' panel made up of a representative cross-section of the public, to hear what they want from government policy, to make healthy food available to all. We speak to Guy Singh-Watson, founder of the organic veg food box company Riverford, and Sue Pritchard, Chief Executive of FFCC, which carried out the survey. The Landworkers' Alliance, Sustain, Pasture for Life and Hodmedods say there is an urgent need to reduce our reliance on soy, which they say is linked with deforestation and is expensive, putting pig and poultry farmers under pressure. They say to feed livestock on home-grown proteins would mean reducing our poultry intake by 86 per cent and pork by 82 per cent. Shearing season is underway. Since the the 2014 Farm Bill established the legal framework for industrial hemp to return to the farm fields of the America, the commonwealth of Kentucky has been on the forefront. For much of that time, Ag Commission Ryan Quarles has led the department in charge of the hemp program. Quarles was elected ag commissioner in 2016 and is currently serving his second and final term. He said Kentucky was an early leader on hemp, “because we were the hemp state historically.” “A lot of farm families have hemp backgrounds,” he said. “You don't have to look very far to see the fingerprints of what used to be a big cash crop.” Quarles is a ninth-generation Kentuckian and grew up on the farm where his family grew hemp in the 1940s to support the wart effort. Having a history of hemp cultivation was helpful, but there were still challenges in bringing the crop back, he said. “I think the No. 1 issue with hemp in the early days was just the education of what hemp is and what hemp is not,” he said. “And so for a lot of us in the agriculture sphere, we knew that it was an industrial crop primarily used for its fiber and grain production.” Something else that set Kentucky apart was how the state program was structured. “We knew if we're going to bring this crop back from the dead, we needed to have a legal framework that was user friendly, that involved law enforcement, but also allowed people who want to grow it or process it an opportunity to take that risk,” he said. That legal framework set an example for other states to follow. “We've been replicated to most across the country because I think we were really the first state, in my opinion, that really got a legal framework that passed through our General Assembly, that our agriculture community adopted,” Quarles said. As the industry navigates the post-CBD craze market, Quarles would like to see some definitive language from the Food and Drug Administration. “The No. 1 impediment of hemp in America is the FDA. The FDA needs to do their job and give us guidelines on what their view is on the potential regulatory aspects of CBD and other cannabinoids,” he said. He said interest in fiber and grain production is growing in Kentucky, and he referred to two companies that are making great strides: HempWood and EcoFiber. How does he feel about a possible exemption to lift the burdensome regulations from fiber and grain growers? Listen and find out. The transmission of disease-causing pathogens via feed ingredients has garnered a tremendous amount of study in recent years. He and his colleagues have done as much or more study into the role feed ingredients play in virus transmission as anyone in the business. His most recent paper looked at a case study in which Senecavirus A was introduced into a historically-negative country via soybean meal imported from a positive country. In this episode we talk with Dr. Dee about the findings from this case study, how they apply to U.S. swine biosecurity efforts, and what veterinarians and producers need to do more generally to achieve what he describes as “next-generation biosecurity”.This episode of Feedstuffs in Focus is sponsored by Topigs Norsvin. Swine genetics company Topigs Norsvin is renowned for its innovative approach to implementing new technologies and its continuous focus on cost-efficient and sustainable pig production. Research, innovation, and dissemination of genetic improvements are the cornerstones of the company. Topigs Norsvin's approach of breeding pigs for enhanced, natural robustness to disease challenge is a viable solution for disease control. A farmer talks about a tragic accident which cost his nephew his life, in the hope it'll be a reminder to other farmers not to allow children on farm equipment. Brian Nutter was convicted by the Health and Safety Executive, after allowing his four year old nephew to ride on his digger. In 2017 the UK produced just under 14 million tonnes of feed - but 6 million tonnes of the ingredients were imported, and the cost has risen dramatically. So could the answer be getting animals to eat home-grown insects? In the European Union insects can now be fed to pigs. But the law here in the UK is lagging behind. A company which provides the technology to farm insects is lobbying for this to change. A group of conservationists, farming groups and policy advisers have launched what they call a UK Climate and Trade Commission. It's been set up by Queen Mary University of London and the Trade Justice Movement, and its 15 members include experts from the United Nations, former senior government officials, environmental and farming groups, businesses and trade unions. Members hope it'll help bridge the gap between trade and climate organisations.
