Who are the “Redshift Wranglers” and what can they tell us about the evolution of our universe? To find out, Dr. Charles Liu and co-host Allen Liu welcome back astrophysics PhD candidate Sadie Coffin from the Rochester Institute of Technology whose focus is galactic evolution, and in particular, the spectroscopy of galaxies and their lights. As always, though, we start off with the day's joyfully cool cosmic thing: the Lucy spacecraft fly-by of asteroid 52246 Donaldjohanson, which was named after the American paleoanthropologist who discovered the Australopithecus afarensis “Lucy” fossil the spacecraft was named after. Then it's time to learn a little about Sadie, who explains how questioning the unknown is what drove her to study astronomy. Chuck, Allen and Sadie talk about the awe embodied in the study of the universe and the universe itself. Like Chuck, Sadie studies galaxy evolution, but Sadie focuses on a galaxy's light, spread into spectra, and dissecting different features in that light. You'll hear about the citizen science project called “Red Shift Wranglers” that helps Sadie sift through all the spectroscopic data, and get an awesome explanation of the doppler effect and the way red shift, which measures speed, can be used to help build better maps of galactic evolution. Find out how you can get involved with the project and join the ranks of the 3,500 Redshift Wranglers who've participated so far in “Wrangling galaxies and the universe together.” (See below for links.) You'll also hear about other citizen science projects on Zooniverse like Galaxy Zoo. Sadie talks about the value of non-experts engaging with experts in a community, and the surprising number of people who want to get involved. For our first audience question, Nina asks, “If nothing can go faster than the speed of light, why can galaxies have Z greater than 1?” Sadie's explanation gets pretty technical, so we'll let her do it in the episode. Our next question comes from Jerry, who asks, “Will we someday no longer need scientists and have AI do all our research?” Sadie, who gets similar questions all the time relative to citizen science, believes these two things can be complimentary, and that in the name of improving science we can't forgo either for the other. We finish with a discussion about what defines an act of science and a work of art, the process of questioning, and the roles of humans and machines in these processes. Plus, Sadie tells us about the science-themed travel posters by Dr. Tyler Nordgren on her walls. Chuck also gets Sadie to talk about rowing and the lessons she's taken from the sport into other aspects of her life and journey as a scientist. Tens of millions of people in the United States will be able to witness a Total Solar Eclipse on Monday as the rare astronomical event cuts a path from Texas to Maine, up to 122 miles wide in some spots.  This is a great opportunity to see the exact moment when the moon fully blocks the sun, creating a blazing corona visible to those observing from the center line of totality.  There are a number of national park units within the eclipse path that runs from Texas to Maine that offer good vantage points to view the eclipse. And the parks offer a great Plan B of exploration and education if the day turns out to be cloudy or worse.  This week, the Traveler's Lynn Riddick, who is planning to be in the center line of totality as the eclipse passes through Texas, speaks with renowned astronomer Tyler Nordgren – who is also planning to be in the center line as it passes through New York.  Lynn and Tyler will discuss the eclipse as well as some national park eclipse viewing opportunities after this break.

In September, the super moon will be accompanied by a partial eclipse. While a supermoon is easy to spot from wherever you are, the eclipse will be visible from much of the Americas, Europe, and Africa. A confluence of three popular lunar events will make for an exciting night of stargazing on the night of Tuesday, Sept. 17, into the early hours of Wednesday, Sept. 18. A partial lunar eclipse will coincide with the first super moon of the year, causing part of the moon to temporarily go dark as it passes through Earth's shadow.    Super Moon — October 17 The second and closest supermoon of 2024 will occur in October. During a supermoon, the moon can appear up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than when it is the farthest. There's no need for specialized equipment to view the moon, but a clear night sky and an unobstructed view will help. NEWS ILLEGAL EAGLE FEATHER TRAFFICKING UNVEILED           FLATHEAD INDIAN RESERVATION, Mont. (KFYR) - Prosecutors say a Washington state man intends to plead guilty to helping kill some 3,600 birds, including eagles, and illegally selling their feathers. A judge issued an arrest warrant for a second suspect who failed to appear in court last month.  Such feathers are highly prized among many Native American tribes for use in sacred ceremonies and during pow-wows. The defendants are accused of selling eagle parts on a black market that has been a long-running problem for U.S. wildlife officials. Illegal shootings are a leading cause of golden eagle deaths, according to a recent government study. Immature golden eagle feathers are especially valued among tribes, and a tail set from one of the birds can sell for several hundred dollars, according to details disclosed during a separate trafficking case in South Dakota last year in which a Montana man was sentenced to three years in prison.     Prosecutors say Travis Branson and others killed the birds during a years-long “killing spree” on the Flathead Indian Reservation in Montana and elsewhere.   SPY CAMS IN VACATION RENTALS According to the Daily Mail, 10% of vacation rentals come equipped with concealed surveillance cameras. These cameras are frequently camouflaged as ordinary items like chargers, smoke alarms, and TV soundbars. Travel experts recommend inspecting for absent screws, additional openings, and reflections that may indicate camera lenses. Rental platforms such as Airbnb enforce stringent regulations prohibiting hidden camera use.   BOMB WASHES UP ON BEACH According to NBC, an old military bomb was recently found washed up on shore in California. A bomb squad was called in, confirming the explosive was inactive and then safely removed it from the beach.   MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE: SOUTH CAROLINA TO FRANCE Who has thrown a message in a bottle, tossed it to the sea or ocean wondering if it'll ever be found? A South Carolina fisherman dropped a bottle in the ocean three years ago. The bottle contained a letter and ribbons. The fisherman was shocked that it made its way to France. Have you ever found a message in a bottle? Host Rebecca Wanner aka BEC once did while fishing along the Knife River in North Dakota. The bottle was an old glass pop bottle, and the message was a typewriter typed letter and dated 20 years old.   CORNHOLE PLAYERS EARN COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS According to Deadspin, High schoolers are securing scholarships to play cornhole at the college level. Recently, two high school seniors signed letters of intent to join Winthrop University in North Carolina as cornhole players. These scholarships will cover half of their tuition costs. He holds a Ph.D. in Astronomy from Cornell University where he did work on dark matter as well as a B.A. in Physics from Reed College. For over a decade he has worked with the National Park Service to turn the national parks into the single largest source for public science and astronomy education in the world. His popular science book “Stars Above, Earth Below: A guide to astronomy in the national parks,” reveals what visitors to America’s national parks can observe in their dark night skies. The color illustrations in this book include both his night sky photography as well as vintage-style “travel posters” he designed to help the public learn about and see the astronomical wonders in the sky. For the 2017 “Great American Eclipse” he wrote the book, “SUN MOON EARTH: The History of Solar Eclipses from Omens of Doom to Einstein and Exoplanets,” describing the vast array of social and scientific influences eclipses have had throughout history. Dr Nordgren also produced a series of 30 eclipse travel posters for communities, state, and national parks in the path of totality. These posters are being collected by the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. In addition to the Smithsonian, Dr. Nordgren’s work has appeared at NASA Headquarters and the White House where he designed the poster for President Obama’s final White House Astronomy Night.  In 2012, NASA’s Curiosity rover joined Spirit and Opportunity on Mars, each carrying sundials, or “Marsdials” which Dr. Nordgren helped design through his science and art. On August 21, 2017 there will be a total solar eclipse passing across the United States from the northwest to the southeast.  While the path of totality will be in the center of the country, at least 60% obscuration will be seen throughout the U.S. and into Canada and Mexico. This is a historic event and millions of people will be viewing and photographing it. On today’s episode, we will discuss the what, when, and where of the eclipse and concentrate on the best and safest ways to view and photograph it. Joining us for this discussion are Senior Staff Writer Christopher Witt, our in-house telescope and optics expert, and photographer and B&H Photography Podcast veteran Todd Vorenkamp, who will explore the best ways for novices as well as experts to view and photograph the eclipse.  After a break, we welcome noted astronomer and night sky photographer Dr. Tyler Nordgren who will offer his thoughts on the eclipse and explain why it might be best to not photograph this eclipse.
