Sharing National Parks Memories to Help Save OUR National Parks & Staff

In Tune to Nature Podcast

In honor of National Park Week and Earthday 2025, we are supporting OUR national parks by sharing stories about what we love about the parks that we all collectively own (the most beautiful and ecologically significant wild places/habitats in the nation...and in the world, as some earned UNESCO World Heritage Site designations), to help encourage Americans to ask for political support to stop trump and musk/DOGE from defunding OUR parks and to stop firing our hard-working park rangers and staff who are our park defenders. In this 28 minute episode I talk about an Atlanta group of women I'm working with on National Park support projects via an Intown Women's Resistance group. They helped send in stories from people around the nation of people talking about parks they love and why (like Cumberland Island NP in GA, and Arches NP in Utah, and me talking about seeing bison and interviewing wolf biologist Rick McIntyre in Yellowstone's Lamar Valley). We encourage you all to share your own park memories with friends and on social media, and to contact your federal Senators and Representatives to demand they protect park employee jobs and fully fund the national parks, and any park programs associated with climate mitigation and DEI, and protect all OUR public lands (some of which are now threatened with being sold to private owners/industries, snuck into a recent Republican budget bill). We must stay vigilant. Here are some organizations that support parks and their employees and can keep us educated on issues and action items, recommended by friend and retired Forester from the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, Kristine Johnson:  PEER: Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility The Coalition to Protect America's National Parks The National Park Conservation Association "In Tune to Nature" is a weekly radio show airing Wednesdays at 6pm Eastern Time on 89.3FM-Atlanta radio and streaming worldwide on wrfg.org (Radio Free Georgia, a nonprofit indie station) hosted by me, Carrie Freeman, or Melody Paris. The show's website and action items can be found at https://wrfg.org/in-tune-to-nature/  Please support nonprofit indie media like our Radio Free Georgia station at https://wrfg.org/  Thank you! Take care of yourself and others, including our park employees and the wild animals who rely on our public lands. Episode 181 Details THIS IS HOW TO CELEBRATE NATIONAL PARKS ALL YEAR LONG National Park Week is a celebration of America's natural treasures, and there's no better time to immerse yourself in the beauty and wonder of these pristine landscapes. The week focusing on the USA National Parks can be a great reason to get the planning and excitement around visiting parks all year long regardless if solo or sharing with others. Whether you're a seasoned explorer or a first-time visitor, here are five ways to enhance your National Park experience and make lasting memories.   5 Ways to Make the Most of A Park Visit Discover Hidden Gems: Every National Park is filled with hidden treasures waiting to be uncovered. Before your visit, take some time to research the park you'll be exploring. Look for lesser-known trails, scenic viewpoints, or unique activities that will make your experience unforgettable. Whether it's a secluded waterfall, a historic landmark, or a rare species of wildlife, there's always something new to discover in our National Parks. Volunteer or Practice Conservation: Give back to the parks that give us so much by volunteering your time and energy. Many National Parks offer volunteer opportunities for individuals or groups looking to make a difference. Whether you're helping with trail maintenance, participating in a beach cleanup, or assisting with wildlife monitoring, your efforts will contribute to the preservation of these precious landscapes for future generations to enjoy. Embrace Innovation and History: National Parks are not only showcases of natural beauty but also repositories of history and innovation. Take some time to learn about the innovative projects that were undertaken when the park was established and how they have shaped the landscape we see today. From the construction of iconic landmarks to the implementation of sustainable practices, these stories of innovation will deepen your appreciation for these incredible places. Engage the Next Generation: Inspire a love of nature and conservation in the next generation by involving youth in your National Park adventures. Whether you're a parent, teacher, or mentor, create an action plan to engage young people in learning about the importance of preserving our natural heritage. Plan activities like nature hikes, wildlife spotting, or educational programs to help them connect with the outdoors and become stewards of the land. Capture Memories Through Art: National Parks have long been a source of inspiration for artists of all kinds. Take advantage of this creative muse by honing your artistic skills during your visit. Whether you're a painter, photographer, or poet, let the beauty of the park inspire your work. Experiment with different mediums, from watercolors to digital photography, and capture the essence of the landscape in your own unique way. Just remember to respect wildlife and keep a safe distance, especially during sensitive times like mating season. By embracing these tips, you can make the most of National Park Week and create unforgettable memories that will last a lifetime whenever visiting a park or historical location on your next adventure. So pack your bags, lace up your hiking boots, and get ready to explore the wonders of America's National Parks!   REVOLUTIONISING AGRICULTURE: The Journey from Corn Fields to Mars The University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Groundbreaking Initiative   Revolutionizing Agriculture with this groundbreaking initiative at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is aiming to cultivate the "first acre of corn on Mars' soil." Discover how insights from growing food in space could revolutionize Earthbound farming techniques, shaping the future of agriculture. We’re going to play you a clip each from, Gaze at the National Parks, Everybody’s National Parks, Parklandia, and America’s National Parks. These throwback episodes are some of our favorites. We hope you enjoy. Thank you to America's National Parks for producing this episode. Discussion includes the following: 1:25 We began with full-time RVers Matt and Brad Kirouac, who travel the county with one goal: to visit as many national parks as possible, producing the Parklandia Podcast. We threw back to Parklandia’s first episode ever as they sat down for a glass of wine made in Cuyahoga Valley National Park. 7:30 In Dustin Ballard and Michael Ryan’s Gaze at the National Parks Podcast, each episode features one hiking trail in one national park, one park at a time. The clip is from Episode 10 – Angel’s Landing in Zion National Park. After getting on the Angel’s Landing Trail right at 7am, Mike and Dusty make it all the way to the top of the Chains. Dusty’s fear of heights keeps him clutching to a boulder while Mike walks to all of the edges and takes all of the photos. 13:03 Everybody’s National Parks is an audio guide podcast promoting family adventure in our national parks — like having a ranger in your pocket. Danielle along with her husband Bryan and their 2 junior rangers have new episodes that come out every other Tuesday. Each series of episodes includes a trip report and interviews with experts, tips and insight on what makes that park special. Everybody’s National Parks has in-depth multi-episode series on dozens of parks, along with special guests episodes. We featured a few different clips: An excerpt from the Yosemite trip report from May 2019, a clip of Historian – musician Tom Bopp performing “Yosemite, O Land of Cliffs and Waterfalls,” ending with a clip from their interview with Ken Burns from April 2019. Everybody’s National Parks 8–part podcast series on Yosemite also includes a wonderful conversation about Ansel Adams’ legacy with his son Michael, grandson Matthew and internationally known photographer and Ansel’s last darkroom assistant, Alan Ross, and so much more. 16:46 Finally, a clip from the America’s National Parks podcast, produced and hosted by Jason Epperson and Abigail Trabue, as they travel the country with their three boys. They tell stories from the past, spotlight conservation efforts, and bring you the latest news from the parks. The clip came from our episode “37 Days in Yellowstone,” which tells the story of Truman Everts, who was separated from the Washburn expedition that set out to explore the wild and wondrous land that is now Yellowstone National Park. Blunder after blunder led everts to lose both his horse and a supply horse, a pistol, and two knives. He lit the forest on fire twice, accidentally slept in a bear’s den, and spent days in a tree after being chased up it by a mountain lion. Yet miraculously, he survived. RV NEWS OF THE WEEK Glacier National Park is replacing signs that predicted its glaciers would be gone by 2020 The signs at Glacier National Park warning that its signature glaciers would be gone by 2020 are being changed. The signs in the Montana park were added more than a decade ago to reflect climate change forecasts at the time by the US Geological Survey. In 2017, the park was told by the agency that the complete melting off of the glaciers was no longer expected to take place so quickly due to changes in the forecast model. But tight maintenance budgets made it impossible for the park to immediately change the signs. The most prominent placards, at St. Mary Visitor Center, were changed last year. The park is still waiting for budget authorization to update signs at two other locations. But the glacier warning isn't being removed entirely. Instead, the new signs will say: "When they will completely disappear depends on how and when we act. One thing is consistent: the glaciers in the park are shrinking. 5 free days you can visit a national park in 2020 One of the terrific things about the National Park Service — aside from its duty to serve as the caretaker of America’s greatest outdoor spaces — is the annual designation of five days during the course of the year that are free to the public. Those five days have been announced for 2020: 20:Martin Luther King Jr. Day April 18:First day of National Park Week (a weeklong celebration of all parks) 25:National Park Service birthday 26:National Public Lands Day 11:Veterans Day On these dates, you can visit any national park across the country without paying an entrance fee. Description: Becky Lomax is the author of The Moon Guidebook USA National Parks - The Complete Guide To All 59 Parks. Just in time for National Parks Week, Danielle and Bryan talk with Becky about her favorite itineraries, tips for families planning summer trips, and her lifelong love affair with the National Park Service (NPS). For summer travel, Becky recommends looking to the mountain parks because they can offer some cooler hiking, biking and scenic drives. Some favorites on the east coast include Acadia National Park, Shenandoah National Park, and Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Other popular options are Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton National Park, Glacier National Park, and Rocky Mountain National Park. Parks generally to avoid in the summer and save for cooler months include Saguaro National Park, Death Valley National Park, Joshua Tree National Park, and Big Bend National Park. At Bryan’s request, Becky dreams up some wonderful road trip itineraries if you want to hit multiple destinations in one vacation. East Coast: Shenandoah and Great Smoky Mountains connected by the Blue Ridge Parkway Central Mountains: Yellowstone and Grand Tetons with either Glacier or Rocky Mountain California: Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park and Yosemite National Park Washington State: Olympic National Park, North Cascades National Park, and Mount Rainier National Park To enjoy the beauty of the national parks without the crowds, visit lesser known destinations such as Crater Lake National Park in southern Oregon, Lassen Volcanic National Park in northern California, Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, Wind Cave National Park, and Theodore Roosevelt National Park. If you do find yourself in a crowded spot, remember to hit the trails early for the best experience. Becky’s best recommendation is to take a deep dive into one park at a time. This approach cuts back on driving and gives you the time to go hiking, do some wildlife watching in the evening, to try fishing or kayaking or to swim in the lakes. As she says, “when you can sit in one park and have a whole plethora of experiences you go away essentially just loving that park because you've had such a rich, rich, full time there.” Discussion includes the following: National Park Week activities and free entry day - April 20th to the 28th (3:11) Reflections on National Junior Ranger Day (6:10) How to make the most of your family’s NPS vacation with suggested itineraries and lesser known parks (6:53) One of Becky’s early memories of backpacking as a child in Mount Rainier (15:41) Witnessing the effects of climate change and glaciers melting (18:48) Night Skies, the NPS program that protects nighttime views and one of Becky’s favorite park offerings (22:35) Becky’s favorite memories from Grand Canyon National Park, Canyonlands National Park, Kenai National Park, and Yellowstone National Park including a breathtaking moment with the Northern Lights reflecting off a glacier (26:06) Actions: Subscribe to our podcast wherever podcasts are available or from our website https://www.everybodysnationalparks.com/ We also want to hear about your adventures. I want to be a resource, contributor and support to you on your gluten-free journey!   Happy National Park Week! National Park Week officially starts April 20th, but I'm celebrating a bit early this year. There's no better way to learn about America's heritage than through a journey into a National Park. Did you know there are 84 National Parks preserving over 400 million acres of land? I've always loved going to National Parks - it's one of my favorite places to travel! I've never gone to a national park and have been disappointing. No matter whether they are big or small, the national park system will wow you every time! In this episode, I'm going to give you the 411 on National Parks, activities to do, when to go and how to navigate the park you choose to visit. I'll also take you on a brief tour of the National Park Service website and tell you about the National Park Foundation. Let's dive in and chat about the National Park Service. I'm not going to bore you with a bunch of information about history history of The National Park Service; but I do want to give you some basics about the heritage of the national Park system. By the Act of March 1, 1872, Congress established Yellowstone National Park in the Territories of Montana and Wyoming "as a public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people" and placed it "under exclusive control of the Secretary of the Interior." The founding of Yellowstone National Park began a worldwide national park movement. Today more than 100 nations contain some 1,200 national parks or equivalent preserves. On August 25, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed the act creating the National Park Service, a new federal bureau in the Department of the Interior responsible for protecting the 35 national parks and monuments then managed by the department and those yet to be established. This "Organic Act" states that "the Service thus established shall promote and regulate the use of the Federal areas known as national parks, monuments and reservations…by such means and measures as conform to the fundamental purpose of the said parks, monuments and reservations, which purpose is to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and the wild life therein and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations." An Executive Order in 1933 transferred 56 national monuments and military sites from the Forest Service and the War Department to the National Park Service. This action was a major step in the development of today's truly national system of parks—a system that includes areas of historical as well as scenic and scientific importance. Congress declared in the General Authorities Act of 1970 "that the National Park System, which began with the establishment of Yellowstone National Park in 1872, has since grown to include superlative natural, historic, and recreation areas in every region…and that it is the purpose of this Act to include all such areas in the System…." So, what can you do in a national park? What do you want to do? Find out about local geologic features? How about the history of how our country's government formed? Or maybe you want to learn about the ecosystem of the Everglades? Sound overwhelming? Why not start at the National Park website at NPS.gov Here you can: search by state see what parks, monument and national lands are in the state link to the specific park find out what activities each individual park has to offer Kids stuff: you'll never see a bored child at a national park.
