From its origins with U.S. Biathlon in 1958 at Fort Richardson, Alaska, the partnership with the National Guard has been a vital tool in the success of the sport in America. Today, many core athletes on the U.S. Biathlon Team – men and women – are supported by the National Guard. In this episode, Heartbeat explores the longstanding National Guard partnership with Sergeant First Class Quenten Jones, who administers the program, and longtime national team member turned coach, Warrant Officer Leif Nordgren.Nordgren, who retired in 2022 after competing in three Olympics and nine World Championships, has taken over as coach from longtime leader Travis Boyer. Now a Blackhawk helicopter pilot in the Vermont National Guard, Nordgren makes his home in Vermont working out of the National Guard training base in Jericho. In the early years of his career, Nordgren had looked at the National Guard program but opted to stick with the national team. But after his second Olympics in 2018, he revisited the opportunity to join the program for his final Olympic cycle. It was a productive program for him, not only as an athlete but in setting him up on a career path in the Guard, including a role with the sport he loves.Jone and Nordgren dive into insights on the National Guard program with U.S. Biathlon, including the World Class Athlete Program (WCAP). They talk about the national team athlete support, but also the opportunities for biathletes nationwide. They also speak to the training center at Jericho, which has long partnered with regional club programs, and some of the upgrades in planned renovations. It's an especially deep look into the impact on athletes from Nordgren, who has the benefit of experiencing the national team program, four years of National Guard support, and how his own experience as a coach. Nordgren, who appeared as a guest twice previously on Heartbeat, also takes advantage of the opportunity to talk about his new passion for flying Blackhawk helicopters. An underlying principle both Nordgren and Jones feel deeply in their heart is pride of their country, and of their engagement with the National Guard.Listen in now as Leif Nordgren and Quenten Jones take us inside the relationship between the National Guard and U.S. Biathlon on Heartbeat.Past EpisodesLeif Nordgren: A Distinguished Career - May 6, 2022Leif Nordgren: A Family Affair - Jan. 29, 2021More Information on National GuardOur Mission: Biathlon

“Software is an interesting medium. At least in theory, once you make something and it doesn't become successful, it doesn't cost anything to change your mind. You can just stop running it.”Software is built upon software, forming a complex and often invisible dependency tree. This is the world Andie Nordgren (she/her) navigates, where large and aging codebases are like dynamic landscapes—constantly evolving, with each shift potentially introducing unexpected obstacles.Andie shares her reflections and learnings from working in organizations that live or die by their ability to navigate and operate with really large code bases. Tools like Wardley mapping can help uncover hidden dependencies and elevate maintenance from a mere afterthought to an organizational priority.Andie highlights the crucial yet often overlooked role of maintenance, challenging us to ask: Are we truly maintaining agency over our code? In the rush to deliver new features and products, the long-term sustainability of our codebases often falls by the wayside. She argues that organizations, in their quest for rapid delivery, neglect the importance of maintaining agency within these vast code landscapes.

On Monday, April 8, 2024, North America will be graced with a total solar eclipse, turning day into night across a wide swath of the United States. AND what makes this Total Eclipse so incredibly noteworthy, because the next isn't slated to happen for another 2 decades, 20 years. Whether you're in Southern California, Washington State, or the mountains of North Carolina, get set for a partial eclipse at the very least. For the ultimate experience, position yourself beneath the path of totality, stretching from Northern Mexico through Texas, up to Maine, and beyond into Canada. According to astronomer Tyler Nordgren, a total eclipse is nothing short of otherworldly. As the moon completely obscures the sun, expect the sky to darken, colors to shift, and the brightest stars to emerge. Nordgren recommends choosing a location you genuinely want to explore. Whether you're clouded out or not, being in a captivating setting enhances the experience. Just remember to pack your protective eyewear to safeguard your eyes during this awe-inspiring event. As April 8 approaches, consider your ideal spot to witness nature's breathtaking display. Whether you're drawn to the rugged landscapes of Texas, the serene beauty of Maine, or the majestic badlands of North Dakota, the path of totality offers an array of captivating destinations. Prepare for a day like no other—a day when the heavens align, and the universe unfolds its mysteries before your eyes. In September, the super moon will be accompanied by a partial eclipse. While a supermoon is easy to spot from wherever you are, the eclipse will be visible from much of the Americas, Europe, and Africa. A confluence of three popular lunar events will make for an exciting night of stargazing on the night of Tuesday, Sept. 17, into the early hours of Wednesday, Sept. 18. A partial lunar eclipse will coincide with the first super moon of the year, causing part of the moon to temporarily go dark as it passes through Earth's shadow.    Super Moon — October 17 The second and closest supermoon of 2024 will occur in October. During a supermoon, the moon can appear up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than when it is the farthest. There's no need for specialized equipment to view the moon, but a clear night sky and an unobstructed view will help. NEWS ILLEGAL EAGLE FEATHER TRAFFICKING UNVEILED           FLATHEAD INDIAN RESERVATION, Mont. (KFYR) - Prosecutors say a Washington state man intends to plead guilty to helping kill some 3,600 birds, including eagles, and illegally selling their feathers. A judge issued an arrest warrant for a second suspect who failed to appear in court last month.  Such feathers are highly prized among many Native American tribes for use in sacred ceremonies and during pow-wows. The defendants are accused of selling eagle parts on a black market that has been a long-running problem for U.S. wildlife officials. Illegal shootings are a leading cause of golden eagle deaths, according to a recent government study. Immature golden eagle feathers are especially valued among tribes, and a tail set from one of the birds can sell for several hundred dollars, according to details disclosed during a separate trafficking case in South Dakota last year in which a Montana man was sentenced to three years in prison.     Prosecutors say Travis Branson and others killed the birds during a years-long “killing spree” on the Flathead Indian Reservation in Montana and elsewhere.   SPY CAMS IN VACATION RENTALS According to the Daily Mail, 10% of vacation rentals come equipped with concealed surveillance cameras. These cameras are frequently camouflaged as ordinary items like chargers, smoke alarms, and TV soundbars. Travel experts recommend inspecting for absent screws, additional openings, and reflections that may indicate camera lenses. Rental platforms such as Airbnb enforce stringent regulations prohibiting hidden camera use.   BOMB WASHES UP ON BEACH According to NBC, an old military bomb was recently found washed up on shore in California. A bomb squad was called in, confirming the explosive was inactive and then safely removed it from the beach.   MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE: SOUTH CAROLINA TO FRANCE Who has thrown a message in a bottle, tossed it to the sea or ocean wondering if it'll ever be found? A South Carolina fisherman dropped a bottle in the ocean three years ago. The bottle contained a letter and ribbons. The fisherman was shocked that it made its way to France. Have you ever found a message in a bottle? Host Rebecca Wanner aka BEC once did while fishing along the Knife River in North Dakota. The bottle was an old glass pop bottle, and the message was a typewriter typed letter and dated 20 years old.   CORNHOLE PLAYERS EARN COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS According to Deadspin, High schoolers are securing scholarships to play cornhole at the college level. Recently, two high school seniors signed letters of intent to join Winthrop University in North Carolina as cornhole players. These scholarships will cover half of their tuition costs. Both athletes are highly regarded, earning five-star ratings, and they represent the first students to commit to a college for cornhole.   As always here at The Bend Show, we encourage all ages to take up lifelong sports and activities. Cornhole is another great example, just as fishing, clay target shooting and archery, of an activity we can do all our lives and encourages us to do so while socializing with other people. Search Amazon for the word ‘innovation' in its ‘Business, Finance & Accounting' book section, and you will find more than 60,000 volumes. The trick is finding stuff worth reading in this deep and wide ocean of material. The new book, Ideaflow: Why Creative Businesses Win, by Jeremy Utley and Perry Klebahn is just such a book. I welcomed Jeremy to this episode of TRIUM Connects to discuss the book as well as his general views on creativity and innovation. In the book, Jeremy and Perry argue that we shouldn't think of innovation as an event, a workshop, a sprint or a hackathon…but rather as a more general capability that can be learnt and is relevant to everyone. Their core principle is that you need ideas to solve problems – in contrast to completing tasks where you just need to get on with the work. But, instead of obsessing over quality, successful innovators focus on the generation of many ideas. Volume is key. Once you have a sufficient volume, then you run quick and cheap experiments to gather more information, revise and test again. Jeremy knows what he is talking about. He is one of the world's leading experts in innovation. As the Director of Executive Education at Stanford's renowned Hasso Plattner Institute of Design (aka "the d.school"). His courses [K1] have been experienced by nearly a million students of innovation worldwide. He advises corporate leaders on how to embed[K2] the methods and mindsets of design thinking into their organizations, and works with professionals to cultivate a robust personal creative practice. He also co-hosts the "Stanford Masters of Creativity," program where Jeremy shines the spotlight on exemplars of creative practice across disciplinary boundaries. What makes Ideaflow a great book, and what I really enjoyed in my conversation with Jeremy, is the concrete, actionable innovation practices described and the fact that they are backed up by solid research and evidence. When we think about ideas like selling or marketing, we usually think of getting people to buy products. But Loran Nordgren is talking about getting people to buy into new ideas. And the biggest obstacle isn't always motivation-its often friction. Loran Nordgren is a Professor of Management and Organizations at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. His research considers the basic psychological processes that guide how we think and act. The overarching goal of his work is to advance psychological theory and to use theory-driven insights to develop decision strategies, structured interventions, and policy recommendations that improve decision-making and well-being. Loran's first book “The Human Element: Overcoming the Resistance that Awaits New Ideas” spent multiple weeks on the Wall Street Journal Bestseller list.Greg and Loran discuss fuel based mindsets, crafting brand empathy, status quo bias, and how American football is socialist in this episode.Episode Quotes: Fuel can be positive and negativeSo we tend to think about fuel as these positive things. But the job of fuel is to simply ignite or incite our desire for change. And we often do that by dangling shiny things in front of people. So carrots, but we also use sticks. And so that kind of, yeah, the telling people, this is a limited opportunity. There's only one left. That is inciting our desire for change. It's not making it necessarily more fun, more pleasant, more intrinsically interesting. But really anything that propels, whether that's a push or a pull, we would consider fuel. How to get people to changeSo a good rule of thumb for people is anytime you're offering them one path, like you're putting one thing up in front of them, it's a good chance that the status quo is operating against you. Now, the better news is that once you see that, there are all kinds of ways that not only reduce that friction, but to take that thing and transform it in essence into fuel to make it a motivating force. Fuel based thinkingWe have this reflexive idea that the way you get someone to say yes is to elevate appeal, magnetism, attraction. And we intuitively think that if people are rejecting our offering, it's because that fuel is insufficient. And we refer to that reflex as thinking in fuel or a fuel based mindset.Show Links:Guest Profile:Faculty Profile at Kellog School of Management at Northwestern UniversitySpeaker's Profile at the Lavin AgencyLoran Nordgren's WebsiteLoran Nordgren on LinkedInLoran Nordgren's Human Element His Work:Loran Nordgren on Google ScholarThe Human Element: Overcoming the Resistance That Awaits New IdeasThe Psychology of Desire

To me, leading is a verb. If you're leading, you're a leader. If you're swimming you're a swimmer, if you're driving you're a driver. If you're leading you're by definition a leader. I define leading as being looked to in a particular moment to make a decision or perform an action based on your unique gifts and abilities. So by that definition, everybody is a leader. Another great woman in Fraud today is Cristina Revelo.  We “met” through Jay Rosen.  What a small world we live in.  I love Cristina's story because she has done so much in her career already but she is not afraid to try new things.  What is a monitorship, you ask?  I like to call it time out for corporations.  Listen to a much better definition of it from Cristina.  The thing is that monitorships will be increasing. That just came out of the White Collar Crime Conference in Miami in October.  I have included the link in the shownotes. From Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco: Of course, the decision to use monitors must also include consideration of how the monitorship is administered and the standards by which monitors are expected to do their work. And the selection of monitors will continue to be accomplished in a fashion that eliminates even the perception of favoritism. The department will study how we select corporate monitors, including whether to standardize our selection process across the divisions and offices.” As to what I listened to last week it was a lot but one podcast really stood out to me. Hidden Brain Work 2.0 The Obstacles You Don't See.  Organizational Psychologist Loran Nordgren was a guest.   When the last time you bought a new sofa did it take you longer to buy it because you didn't know what or how you were going to get rid of your old sofa.  This is a real problem.  The story of Beach House was fascinating.  Fuel and Friction got me thinking about why so many victims don't go to law enforcement.  We need to remove the friction for our clients.  Take a listen.  And I ordered Nordgren's new book, The Human Element: Overcoming the Resistance That Awaits New Ideas.  Podcasts cost me money.  So many books to read after listening to guests.  Let's get listening to Cristina. https://www.linkedin.com/in/cristinarevelo/https://www.affiliatedmonitors.com/cristina-revelo/https://www.justice.gov/opa/speech/deputy-attorney-general-lisa-o-monaco-gives-keynote-address-abas-36th-national-institute

Loran Nordgren is Professor of Management and Organizations at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management. His research explores the basic psychological processes that guide how we think and act. David Schonthal is Clinical Professor of Innovation & Entrepreneurship at Kellogg, as well as Faculty Director of Kellogg's Zell Fellows Program, a selective venture accelerator program designed to help student entrepreneurs successfully launch or acquire new businesses. Their new book, The Human Element, focuses on how to get people to say yes to a new idea or innovation. Many believe that the best (and perhaps only) way to convince people to embrace a new idea is to heighten the appeal of the idea itself. However, the authors argue, this neglects the other half of the equation — the psychological “Frictions” that oppose change. In a conversation with Martin Reeves, Chairman of the BCG Henderson Insitute, the authors share insights from the book, explore the causes of frictions, and provide guidance on how we can identify and overcome them. *** About the BCG Henderson Institute The BCG Henderson Institute is the Boston Consulting Group's think tank, dedicated to exploring and developing valuable new insights from business, technology, economics, and science by embracing the powerful technology of ideas. We will learn: Why your best ideas often get rejected.  How to disarm the forces of resistance that act against change.  How to transform the very frictions that hold us back into catalysts for change.  Collectively, we have access to more resources than we've ever had, but we're also less happy, more stressed, and fatter than we've ever been.   So something, or some things, are just not working.   The problem is, we might be sad, fat and stressed out, but we think we're comfortable.    The funny thing about the comfort zone is that it's really just familiarity that creates the illusion of comfort.   And when someone comes around with a new idea, we tense up and resist it because we just don't want to pop our own comfort bubbles.   So how do we break through the resistance?   How do we get people to say yes to ideas that are fresh and new and awesome, but just not yet familiar?   That's what we're talking about today. Our guest is Loran Nordgren, teacher and researcher of the psychological forces that propel and prevent the adoption of new ideas.   Links from the episode: Show Notes: https://mindlove.com/202 Sign up for The Morning Mind Love for short daily notes from your highest self.  Get Mind Love Premium for exclusive ad-free episodes and monthly meditations.  Support Mind Love Sponsors   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
