When Charles II ascended the English throne in 1660 after two decades of civil war, he was confronted with domestic disarray and a sprawling empire in chaos. His government sought to assert control and affirm the King's sovereignty by touting his stewardship of both England's land and the improvement of his subjects' health. In An Empire Transformed: Remolding Bodies and Landscapes in the Restoration Atlantic (NYU Press, 2021), Dr. Kate Mulry examines ambitious projects of environmental engineering, including fen and marshland drainage, forest rehabilitation, urban reconstruction, and garden transplantation schemes, showing how agents of the English Restoration government aimed to transform both places and people in service of establishing order. Merchants, colonial officials, and members of the Royal Society encouraged royal intervention in places deemed unhealthy, unproductive, or poorly managed. Their multiple schemes reflected an enduring belief in the complex relationships between the health of individual bodies, personal and communal character, and the landscapes they inhabited. In this deeply researched work, Kate Mulry highlights a period of innovation during which officials reassessed the purpose of colonies, weighed their benefits and drawbacks, and engineered and instituted a range of activities in relation to subjects' bodies and material environments. This book investigates how Restoration officials endeavoured to recover control and counteract any lingering questions about the king's rightful authority after this long exile by reforming and cultivating environments on both sides of the Atlantic. An Empire Transformed is an interdisciplinary work addressing a series of interlocking issues concerning ideas about the environment, governance, and public health in the early modern English Atlantic empire. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose doctoral work focused on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. John Mulry (yes, you saw that right) joins us for the 256th episode of The Copywriter Club podcast. John is a direct marketing expert who was trained by Dan Kennedy. He's the creator of Email Academy Pro and Expert Authority Formula. If you want to be seen as an expert in your field, this is the episode for you. Here's how it goes down: The process of writing a book at supersonic speed. Bringing direct response marketing to different countries. Going from fitness expert to marketing master. How helping people can look different for everyone. Bridging the gap to help business owners connect on a deeper level with their audience. The key to being seen as the expert. How unplanned events and experiences can change your life immensely. Should every copywriter write a book? Finding joy in finding your first clients. The acquisition of new skills and how to accelerate your business. Do you need to be great at sales to be great at marketing? What it's like being the Director of Marketing for Todd Brown. How to acquire new customers in a crowded market. Best practices for building a 3 part acquisition funnel. How to engineer your offer to get repeated stripe notifications. What is AOV and why it's important for your funnel. The real job of copywriters. (Hint: it isn't to write words.) Want to uplevel your marketing skills? Listen to the episode or read the transcript below. The people and stuff we mentioned on the show: Kira's website Rob's website The Copywriter Club Facebook Group The Copywriter Underground John's website Full Transcript: Rob: One of the things we love about being copywriters is that we're not just hired to make our client's words sound good, we're hired to solve problems. But here's the thing, clients don't always understand that that's what they're asking us to do. They come to us with projects and ask things like, "Can you write my website or can you help with a case study or a sales page?" What they're really asking for is help solving a bigger problem, help me sound professional or help me prove that I can do what I say I can do, or help me sell more products and make more money. The more we sell ourselves as experts in solving complex marketing problems, the more we're able to work with great clients and earn more money. Today's guest for The Copywriter Club Podcast is John Mulry. John is the Director of Marketing for MFA, that's Todd Brown's company, and he is focused on solving very complex marketing problems for Todd and for Todd's clients. And what he's shared in this interview may give you some ideas on how to do that for your own clients and in your own business. But before we get to our interview with John, good news, Kira is back. Hey, Kira. Kira: Hi. Hey, Rob. Good to be back. Rob: Yes. How have you been? It's been a while. Kira: I've enjoyed the podcast interviews while I was away where every intro, I feel like you were like, "And Kira's still on maternity leave." I feel like towards the end it sounded like maybe there was a little bit more frustration in that over the last few episodes, but I'm back. Rob: I don't think I was frustrated. If it sounded that way, I'm sorry then. Kira: Maybe it was just to me. But yeah, I'm happy to be back on the podcast. I've had a fun time listening to other copywriters speak on the podcast and add their commentary and their thoughts. I think it's strengthened the podcast. So I feel like you don't really need me here. I'm just going to leave right now. I don't think you need me here at all. Rob: We definitely had more than one person offer to take your place in the future should you decide to make maternity leave permanent? So who knows? Kira: Tell me who they are, I will fight them. Rob: Well, we'll see that for- Kira: They'll hump me down. Rob: Yeah, exactly. Kira: Rob, how do you feel like running the show over the last few months,
Ted Mulry's solo career is often overshadowed by the enormous success of his time as leader of the the Ted Mulry Gang. The singer / songwriter first found fame working with Harry Vanda and George Young at the famed Albert Studios in 1970. A creative pop balladeer, Ted found chart success with 5 singles prior to meeting up with the Gang. I sat down with Ted's younger brother Steve and we had a great chat about about Ted and his music. Sadly Ted passed away in 2001, aged just 53, however, his music still lives on!
The Ted Mulry Gang were one of Australia's most popular bands throughout the 1970's. Best known for their classic song Jump in my Car, the Ted Mulry Gang had 10 hit singles, as well as 4 albums making the charts. In terms of popularity as a band, TMG stood alongside contemporaries such as Sherbert, Skyhooks and they often had a young AC/DC along for the ride as their support band. I sat down with Ted's younger brother Steve and we had a great chat about Ted and his days as the leader of the Ted Mulry Gang. Sadly Ted passed away in 2001, aged just 53, however, the music of TMG still lives on!

"Music fans are in for a real treat this March as WANSTOCK returns to suburban Victoria with an enviable glam-rock line-up. The third year for the mini-festival, WANSTOCK launched as organiser Geoff Wansbrough’s ode to the days of Woodstock and bringing back 70s hey day of festival fun.A long-time Ted Mulry Gang fan, his vision for the 2020 event is around the great glam-rockers, including Get Rocked, Kings of Oz, City Sharps, The Day Dreamers and Stonetrip. Geoff cut his teeth in the great days of the pub rock era working as a roadie, and that passion for the music industry has never wavered. When it came to putting together the line-up for this year’s event, he wanted to ensure there was something to please everyone.“There is the glam rock of TMG (Ted Mulry Gang) and Get Rocked / Hush,” he says. “Some covers with Kings of Oz, high energy rock from the Day Dreamers to the rock and roll of the City Sharps and Stonetrip. The basic premise is let’s have some fun! We should all have fun while we still can, and recreate some magnificent pub rock, as well as experiencing some great up-and-coming bands!”TMG were a cornerstone of the 70s rock scene. Label mates with AC/DC on Alberts, TMG helped shape the guitar-driven sound of Aussie rock. Their 1975 smash hit Jump In My Car catapulted them to superstardom and they followed with a swag of crowd pleasers such as Darktown Strutters Ball, Crazy, My Little Girl, Heart of Stone, and (You’ve Got) The Devil In You to name a few. The respect the industry had for Ted Mulry was evident by the massive support shown by fellow musicians who put on a series of concerts to raise money for him after he was diagnosed with cancer in 2001. Steve stepped up to perform for Ted at a benefit in his honour Gimme Ted and received the thumbs up from his big brother, so it was only fitting that when TMG got back together that Steve performed for Ted. Now, TMG are back being a hot commodity on the touring circuit, widely renowned for their great live shows."(Podcast Opening Song Credit: Thanks to Melbourne legends The Radio Sun for supplying the intro music, lifted from their track Switch Off The World Tonight)

Peter J. Mulry was born to a staunch Irish Catholic family in Jersey City, NJ and attended St. Mary's High School in Rutherford, NJ. In 1967 he was a member of the first four-year graduating class at Saint Leo University in San Antonio, Florida and was hired to coach baseball by Tampa Catholic Athletic Director, Tom Murray, right out of college. Tampa Catholic's rise to national acclaim began with Coach Mulry and his 1968 team. Together they excited a school and a town - first with thrilling rivalry games - and then with a run to the state championship. During his tenure he took his teams to 6 final four tournaments and won 4 state championships. He accumulated a high school record of 329-39. He was named Coach of the Year in 1968, 1971, 1973, 1976 and nominated to be National Coach of the Year in 1976. He was the head baseball coach at the University of Tampa from 1978-1983. He has been inducted into the Hall of Fame at both St. Leo University and Tampa Catholic High School. After retiring from coaching in 1983, Peter J. embarked on a successful second career as a realtor in Pensacola, FL where he prospered until his retirement in 2010. In 2011 Mulry authored a book, "Conversations in the Seventh Inning of My Life," in which he interviewed 30 of his former players about the life skills they learned while competing for the iconic high-school baseball program. These interviews offered insight on how all these people achieved so much success; both in high school and in life, developing the common thread that served as the inspiration for starting the foundation. Together with some of his former players and colleagues, Coach Mulry has organized the Peter J. Mulry Foundation, Inc. to provide life skills training to deserving young people in the Tampa Bay area.
In this episode, Matt and Jeremy interview Mary Mulry on best practices for healthy and ethical shopping.
