Religious Observance vs. Secular Celebration: The Split IdentityValentine's Day in the contemporary context exemplifies a pronounced duality, serving both as a religious observance and a secular celebration. On one hand, it remains the Feast of Saint Valentine, a minor liturgical event in the Catholic calendar commemorating the martyrdom of early Christian saints. This observance is solemn and centers on themes of faith and sacrifice, with historical details often obscured by legend. For practicing Catholics, the day emphasizes devotion to God rather than romantic love, and similar themes are present in some Eastern Orthodox traditions. However, for most participants, religious origins have been overshadowed by the holiday's secular iteration, which emphasizes romance, consumerism, and popular sentiment. The transformation from religious commemoration to secular celebration began in the late Middle Ages, notably through the literary interventions of poets such as Geoffrey Chaucer, who associated the day with courtly love and the mating of birds. Over time, the exchange of notes, the commercialization of cards, and marketing further redefined the holiday. The secular version draws its vitality from literature, commerce, and universal human longing, rather than from its ecclesiastical roots. This dual identity generates both tension and adaptation, as some religious groups discourage participation in the secular holiday, while others incorporate it into their own traditions. Most individuals, however, engage in secular rituals without reference to the original saint. Despite this, the secular celebration retains subtle echoes of its religious predecessor, such as the emphasis on selfless love and enduring commitment. The coexistence of these two layers illustrates the holiday's capacity for cultural adaptation, as it continues to acquire new meanings in response to evolving societal needs.More Podcasts HereProduced by SimVal Media Group, USA

Rabbi Alan Morinis, founder of the Mussar Institute, is a leading figure in the contemporary revival of the Mussar movement, a 1,100-year-old authentic Jewish personal and communal spiritual tradition. A Rhodes Scholar and anthropologist (whose focus had been Hindu religious pilgrimages), he reached a personal turning point in his life in 1997 that led him to seek out the late Rabbi Yechiel Yitzchok Perr, an accomplished master who stood in an unbroken line of transmission of the Mussar tradition.Following years of study, he reinterpreted the ancient Mussar learnings and practices for modern audiences in Climbing Jacob's Ladder (2002) and Everyday Holiness (2007). To address the growing public interest in Mussar, he founded The Mussar Institute in 2004.He went on to author two more books, Every Day, Holy Day (2010), With Heart in Mind (2014), and now a new book, The Shabbat Effect. Alan lives in Vancouver, British Columbia, and continues to explore and interpret original Mussar sources in Hebrew and is making these valuable teachings available to the contemporary world.--Please rate and review the Empowered Jewish Living podcast on whatever platform you stream it. Pharisees, Torah, and Sacrifice: What We Miss When We Misread the Law (Paul Sloan) Ep. #219

The Biblical Mind

Did Jesus come to cancel the Law of Moses—or fulfill it? In this compelling episode, Dr. Paul Sloan joins Dru Johnson to challenge one of the most persistent misunderstandings in modern Christianity: the idea that Jesus and Paul opposed the Torah. Drawing from his book Jesus and the Law of Moses, Sloan explains how legalism, misunderstanding of impurity, and modern Christian readings of Paul have distorted our view of the biblical law. Instead of a rigid checklist of 613 rules, the Torah was a wisdom-guided, relational framework that assumed the realities of sin, forgiveness, and impurity—and offered ways to address them. They explore how Jesus engaged in sophisticated legal reasoning, why Paul continued to participate in the temple sacrificial system even after his conversion, and why the “burden” of the law has been misunderstood. Sloan also critiques how Pharisees are caricatured as villains, with damaging theological consequences—especially for how Christians view modern Jews and Judaism. This episode brings clarity to what Jesus and Paul were really doing with the law—and why recovering this perspective is crucial for theology, biblical interpretation, and interfaith understanding today. What are you truly willing to sacrifice to demonstrate your commitment to a higher power? Join us as we invite you on a reflective journey through the stories and experiences from my recent trip to Israel. We begin with the moving tale of Brigadier General Jonathan Steinberg, whose life was a testament to unwavering faith and love for his country. His story, along with that of a woman navigating her conversion to Judaism, challenges us to confront our own attachments and consider the sacrifices we are ready to make in the name of devotion. From there, we explore the unlikely spiritual awakenings of hostages who turned to Jewish traditions during their darkest hours. These remarkable accounts of finding strength and faith, even involving captors in sacred observances, highlight the transformative power of mitzvot. As we transition to our Talmud Lunch and Learn session, I express my heartfelt gratitude to all who joined our gathering, setting the tone for a rich exploration of Talmudic wisdom. Join us as we explore the profound journey of investing in long-term spiritual growth and trust in Hashem. Listen in as we share the inspiring story of Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach, a legendary Torah scholar, whose dedication to learning and spiritual commitments left a lasting legacy. We discuss the challenges faced by those maintaining Jewish observance in modern times, from keeping Shabbat to adhering to kosher laws, and emphasize the ultimate fulfillment derived from steadfast spiritual growth. This episode is a reminder of the importance of prioritizing our relationship with Hashem and finding joy in the pursuit of Torah study and mitzvot. In this episode, we also explore the concept of developing trust in Hashem through knowledge and effort. Through engaging stories, such as one from the Talmud about miraculous outcomes of unwavering faith, we discuss how genuine trust in the divine often requires letting go of worldly securities. We reflect on King David's teachings, highlighting that true belief in Hashem transcends a mere leap of faith, becoming a form of knowledge that empowers us to reach higher levels of trust. Furthermore, we emphasize the importance of preparing for mitzvot through prayer and mindfulness, ensuring a harmonious connection between heart, mind, and body. Join me on this spiritual journey, as we seek to elevate our actions with a sense of godliness and find deeper meaning in our sacred practices._____________This series on Orchos Tzadikim/Ways of the Righteous is produced in partnership with Hachzek.Join the revolution of daily Mussar study at hachzek.com.We are using the Treasure of Life edition of the Orchos Tzadikkim (Published by Feldheim)Recorded from a live audience presentation in the TORCH Centre - Levin Family Studios (B) in Houston, Texas on September 10, 2024.Released as Podcast on January 31, 2025_____________DONATE to TORCH: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php. Based on his calculations of Daniel 8:14, Miller predicted that Christ would return to earth around 1843–1844.The Great Disappointment (October 22, 1844): When Jesus did not return on the predicted date, many of Miller's followers abandoned the movement. However, a small group believed the date was correct but misunderstood the nature of the event (we will get into this more when we discuss some of the false doctrines they promote).Formation of the Seventh-day Adventist ChurchThe Sabbath Movement: A group led by Joseph Bates and others began emphasizing the importance of observing Saturday (the biblical Sabbath) as a day of worship, based on the fourth commandment. The Sanctuary Doctrine: After the Great Disappointment, followers like Hiram Edson taught that Jesus did not return to earth but instead entered the heavenly sanctuary to begin a new phase of His ministry (the “investigative judgment”).Ellen G. White (1827–1915): Considered a prophetess by Adventists, she played a central role in shaping SDA beliefs and practices. Her visions and writings helped unify the movement and promote distinctive doctrines.Official Organization1863: The Seventh-day Adventist Church was officially organized in Battle Creek, Michigan, with approximately 3,500 members.Expansion: By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the SDA Church grew rapidly, emphasizing evangelism, education, and healthcare.Today's SDA ChurchGlobal Reach: The SDA Church has grown into a worldwide denomination with over 21 million members.Focus Areas: It emphasizes education, healthcare, and missionary work while holding to its unique doctrines.Part II: The Similarities and DifferencesSimilarities:The belief in the TrinityThe humanity and deity of Christ (but there is a little twist here)Salvation by grace through faith (but we will discuss this)Authority of Scripture (but we will discuss this as well)The Second Coming of ChristResurrection of the DeadWhile there are many similarities in the beliefs between SDA and orthodox Christianity, there are some disturbing differences that Christians need to be aware of when considering SDA's. Observance of the SabbathThis is pretty deep. They firmly believe that the 4th commandment to observe the Sabbath is still enforced today and this part of the law was not “fulfilled” in Christ.
