Clare County Council will assist elected representatives in submitting an objection to An Coimisúin Pleanála over Uisce Éireann's plans to build a 170km pipeline from the Parteen Basin to Dublin City. The project which will cost at least €4.5bn euro has sparked concerns for tourism in East Clare given the potential impact it would have on water tourism at Lough Derg. Uisce Éireann claims the project will take just 2% of the flow from the Parteen Basin, but councillors have vociferously called for this plan to be scrapped, with some stating the biggest problem in Dublin is leakage. To facilitate the works the L70361 will be closed in stretches with a traffic management system in place until the works completion in early November. Programme Manager with Uisce Éireann, Jack Cronin, says the works will significanly lower instances of bursts on the mains.

Uisce Eireann is today commencing upgrade works on an 800 metre section of mains on the R483 at Alva, Creegh, which will aim to prevent future leaks and bursts. The utility is also on track to complete 6km of mains replacement in Miltown Malbay by the end of this month, but renewed calls have been made for a new line to serve Doolough to Kilrush. Creegh Independent Councillor Dinny Gould says persistent outages will continue if its not dealt with.
Newly approved plans for a wastewater treatment plan in West Clare are expected to be challenged in the High Court. It comes as Uisce Éireann has been given the green light to build a new sewerage plant, along with foul pumping station on a site just 620m away from Kilkee Cliff Walk. An Bord Pleanála granted permission for the project last week, following a successful appeal from Uisce Eireann which maintains the plant is essential to end the discharge of raw sewerage into Intrinsic Bay. Cathaoirleach of the West Clare Municipal District Rita McInerney has been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan it's likely to spark a judicial review.

The delivery of wastewater treatment systems in Broadford and Cooraclare is expected within the next three to five years. In December 2023, both villages were included in a €50m government pilot scheme to provide infrastructure in unsewered rural areas. The local authority is responsible for delivering the projects in consultation with Uisce Eireann and it's understood the preferred options have been identified for both. Clare County Council Senior Engineer Cyril Feeney says it's an extensive process.
It's hoped €7.5m worth of upgrade works carried out by Uisce Eireann will end the threat of future pollution in a North Clare community. It comes as the Ballymacraven Water Treatment Plant, which serves a population of 6,000 in Ennistymon and its surrounding areas has been removed from the utility's remedial action list. In May of 2023, an uncontrolled sludge discharge at the plant caused the death of up to 2,000 fish in the downstream Ballymacraven River. Kevin Noonan from the Restore Ballymacraven River Association says it's a significant step forward.
It's hoped legacy water disruptions in a bustling West Clare town will finally be coming to an end this Summer. Uisce Eireann has confirmed it will be replacing 6km of defective 50-year-old mains on the Coore water scheme which also serves the surrounding areas of Mullagh, Quilty, Spanish Point and Annagh. The works will commence in March and are expected to be complete by mid June. Quilty Fianna Fáil Councillor Michael Shannon says it's crucial for the region's tourism product.

Frustrations have been highlighted in West Clare following persistent water outages over the Christmas period. Its been reported that residents in Doonbeg and the surrounding area have experienced intermittent supply disruptions, since the 20th of December between 10am and 8pm. Uisce Eireann has confirmed essential works will be undertaken until 6pm tomorrow evening, confirming to Clare FM bursts on both December 20th and 23rd contributed to low pressure or outages. Doonbeg resident Geraldine O'Brien, says the ongoing lack of guaranteed clean water supply is unfair and unjust.
People in Clare are being urged to make informed decisions around what gets poured down the sink in the process of cooking Christmas dinner. Ahead of the big day, Clean Coasts and Uisce Eireann are appealing to people not to pour fats, oils, and greases from cooking down the sink as they can cause blockages and buildups called fatbergs. The 'Think Before You Pour' campaign is instead urging all prospective chefs to let all cooking oils too cool before binning and to scrape all greases off pans before washing them. Lahinch native and Clean Coasts', Think Before You Pour Campaign Officer, Patrick Cross, says although the amount of oil poured down drains has reduced, its still a major issue around Christmas.

Works to significantly reduce leakages in a Clare community plagued by water outages will commence in the coming weeks. Uisce Eireann has confirmed it will be replacing 4km of water mains along the N67 from Doonbeg village as far as Baltard National School as part of it's National Leakage Reduction Programme. The project is expected to be complete by next Spring, and the utility has assured that at least 48 hours notice will be provided in the event of any planned supply disruptions or traffic diversions during the works. Doonbeg Fianna Fáil Councillor Rita McInerney says it's vital for the region's development.
Further uncertainty over plans for a newly proposed wastewater treatment plant for North Clare have been described as extremely frustrating. Uisce Eireann is planning to build a new treatment plant to serve both Ennistymon and Lahinch, and although an initial completion date was set for 2029, the utillity has confirmed to Clare FM that this can no longer be garaunteed. The project is currently at the preliminary design phase and will require several environmental, site , modelling and marine surveys before progressing to the next stage. Ennistymon Fianna Fáil Councillor Shane Talty says the situation is frightening.
Clare County Council is facing calls to provide affordable housing in villages with available wastewater capacity. According to Uisce Eireann's register, there are 17 villages in this county in a position to give sewerage connections for new construction projects. By the end of this year, the local authority will have delivered 10 affordable homes in Shannon, while plans are a foot for a further 39 units on Francis Street, 10 homes on the Lahinch Road and another 11 homes on the Tulla Road in 2025. Inagh-based Green Deputy Leader Senator Roisín Garvey believes much more progress can be made.
It's claimed Uisce Eireann's best option to fast-track a new Wastewater Treatment Plant for Kilkee is to draw up a new plan and not appeal the council's latest decision to An Bord Pleanála. The local authority has refused the utility's application for a plant just 600m away from Kilkee Cliff Walk, citing concerns over its proximity to the attraction and that it wouldn't have the capacity to service visitors adding to the local population. Uisce Eireann has stated the project is necessary to prevent effluent discharge into maritime areas and estimated the construction of a new plant would take between 18-24 months. Former Kilkee Councillor Cillian Murphy has been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan the utility failed the town abysmally by not listening to local concerns.
Michael Tinsley, waste water manager at Uisce Eireann, responds to the new waster water report from the EPA.
The end of legacy water supply issues could soon be on the horizon for a prominent West Clare village. Uisce Eireann has taken the decision to elevate the replacement of 6km of water mains in Doonbeg to the top of its regional priority list. It follows persistent outages caused by bursts on the network's obsolete infrastructure this year, which is also the main artery to Loop Head and has caused significant disruption for tourists, residents, local businesses and farmers. Kilrush Independent Councillor Ian Lynch says while it's a positive step, funding must be secured in budget 2025 to bring the project to fruition.

It's claimed the people of Miltown have been "sold a disaster" due to persistent water outages affecting homes and businesses in the region. It's after a burst main led to supply disruptions in the Coore, Quilty, Mullagh,Miltown Malbay, Spanish Point and Cooraclare areas for the second time in the space of a month. The West Clare Municipal District has since requested a meeting with Senior Management in Uisce Eireann and Clare's Oireachtas members with a view to securing capital funding to upgrade the 50-year-old pipeline serving the network. Local Fianna Fáil Councillor Shane Talty says the situation is completely unacceptable.

It comes as Uisce Eireann has this week completed the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant in Kilrush. Uisce Eireann Programme Manager Esther White has been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan its the first of a number of projects in the pipeline for the region.
