It's the ability to look at a problem and work out a logical process to get a resolution, starting at the start and working your way methodically through problems is a real key, and it's a trait that most engineers have. - Niall Gleeson A lot of us are very solution focused, especially engineers, so we're trying to solve people's problems for them. Quite often, you just have to listen. They talk themselves through the problem and they almost solve it for you while they're sitting in front of you. So it's not always reacting. I think that's probably what I would teach my younger self, listen more. - Niall Gleeson We have an awful lot of stuff that goes into toilets that shouldn't go into toilets like wet wipes.. They say they're biodegradable, but they're not. We pull about 60 tons of what we call rags out of the inlets of Ringsend every month. - Niall Gleeson Over the next 25 years our plan is to improve drinking water, get a very reliable source, provide more where there's growth and make sure that the likes of Dublin can continue to grow, and other urban areas. All of the projections are that the population is going to keep growing.  - Niall Gleeson We have to do our day to day job and we have to deliver water every day, so innovation can be tricky. But our sustainability program is driving a lot of innovation, we're looking at solar panels on the roofs of buildings and things like biodiversity. - Niall Gleeson We're crying out for engineers at the moment. We have a huge recruitment programme going on. As part of our transformation to, the Uisce Eireann transformation program. One of the challenges we have is with our own teams and with the local authorities, there's a lot of people who are approaching retirement. So we need a new batch of people coming through. - Niall Gleeson KEYWORDS#water #engineers #wastewater #drinkingwater #rivers #climatechange

It's claimed persistent water outages are having a catastrophic effect on Miltown's tourist reputation. For the second day in a row this week , restaurants, cafes and visitor accommodation in the West Clare town have been forced to shut up due to a burst water mains. A traffic management plan has been put in place in Miltown today while Uisce Eireann carry out repairs to the main, which is expected to cause supply disruptions up until 5pm this evening. The utility say they are working as quickly as possible to restore water for those in the affected areas. Local Air BnB owner Sean Malone has been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan the legacy issue is continuing to leave a sour taste in the mouths of holidaymakers and leisure seekers. Meanwhile in Quilty repairs to a burst main are expected to last until 4pm this afternoon. Uisce Eireann is thanking consumers in both Quilty and Miltown for their patience during the unplanned outage and is advising those in the affected areas to allow at least 2-3 hours after the estimated restoration time for full supply to return.

Ours to Protect is a unique and exciting audio project – a collaboration of local and regional broadcasters from across the country who have come together to tackle climate change, champion climate action, and inform and educate audiences all over Ireland about how they can make a difference. Today on ‘Ours To Protect' John spoke to Iarla Moran, Regional Operations and Maintenance manager Northwest with Uisce Eireann about their ‘Think Before You Flush Campaign.     Did you know…   The ‘Dirty Dozen' are the top twelve items that are incorrectly flushed down Irish toilets such as wipes, cotton pads, dental floss and food items.   More than 1 in 10 people still admit to flushing wipes down the toilet- the under 35 age category is most likely to do so, with a third of under 35's admitting to flushing ‘Dirty Dozen' items down the toilet.   Wipes-even ones made with biodegradable materials-don't decompose when flushed and can end up on our beaches.   The clogging up or damage to pipes that's caused through ‘Dirty Dozen' items is called ‘Ragging.'   Dental floss is also more likely to build up in machinery in wastewater processes and cause it to breakdown.   Galway City is one of seventeen ‘Think Before you Flush' Communities, alongside Gort in County Galway.     Why is disposing of waste in bins as opposed to toilets so important? Sewage related litter can end up as far as streams, rivers and beaches and cause a threat to seabirds who could mistake waste, particularly plastic, for food.   Wet wipes and sanitary products can cause blockages and damage to wastewater treatment processes, which are costly to remove and lead to emergency water overflows that can flood homes and back gardens.   Overflows and blockages can also happen in households and cause issues with septic tanks.     What can I do to help support the campaign? Put a bin in your bathroom for ‘Dirty Dozen' items   Use reusable options-such as facial cloths and reusable cotton pads.   Use plastic free items where possible and dispose of them in the general waste bin.   Where possible, make DIY alternatives like makeup remover and toner.   Take the ‘Think Before you flush' campaign pledge.     Here's a few websites if you want to know more! Fógra eisithe ag Uisce Éireann maidir le stailc. Irish Water has indicated that the water supply may be disrupted in various parts of the country due to a strike underway by workers in several local authorities. Tá sé tugtha le fios ag Uisce Éireann go mb'fhéidir go gcuirfí isteach ar an soláthar uisce in áiteanna éagsúla sa tír mar gheall ar stailc atá ar bun ag oibrithe i roinnt údarás áitiúil. The workers from the Unite trade union are demanding to retain their status as public servants when they are transferred to Irish Water. Tá na hoibrithe ón gceardchumann Unite ag éileamh a stádas mar sheirbhísigh phoiblí a choinneáil nuair a aistreofar iad go hUisce Éireann. The workers are not satisfied with what the Workplace Relations Commission proposed last year about the issue and they want to engage in discussions again with the other interested parties. Níl na hoibrithe sásta le cuid dar mhol an Coimisiún um Chaidreamh san Áit Oibre anuraidh faoin gceist agus tá siad ag iarraidh dul i mbun comhráite arís leis na páirtithe leasmhara eile. In that case, says the company, there could be a delay in repair work in some other places, such as South Dublin; Carlow; Cork City; Co Cork; Kerry; Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown; Fingal; Galway City; Wexford; and Louth. Ina cheann sin, a deir an comhlacht, d'fhéadfadh moill a bheith ar obair dheisiúcháin i roinnt áiteanna eile, mar atá, Baile Átha Cliath Theas; Ceatharlach; Cathair Chorcaí; Co Chorcaí; Ciarraí; Dún Laoghaire-Ráth an Dúin; Fine Gall; Cathair na Gaillimhe; Loch Garman; agus Lú. The company says it has consulted hospitals and nursing centers in those areas. Deir an comhlacht go bhfuil comhairle curtha acu ar ospidéil agus ar ionaid altranais sna ceantair sin. The workers will be on strike again tomorrow but they will be available to deal with emergencies. Beidh na hoibrithe ar stailc arís amárach ach beidh siad ar fáil le dul i ngleic le héigeandálacha. Tá fiosrúchán ar bun ag gníomhaireachtaí stáit i dtaobh eachtra éiceolaíochta inar maraíodh na mílte breac in abhainn i dtuaisceart Chontae an Chláir. Measann Iascach Intíre Éireann go bhfuil suas le 2,000 breac marbh agus go bhféadfadh blianta a bheith romhainn sula dtiocfaidh an abhainn chuici féin arís. That agency says it is the worst trout kill incident in the region for almost 20 years. Deir an ghníomhaireacht sin go bhfuil sé ar an eachtra is measa ó thaobh mharú na mbreac dhe sa réigiún le beagnach 20 bliain. The Ballymcraven River near Ennisdom is in question. Abhainn Bhaile Mhic Cráibhín in aice le hInis Diomáin atá i gceist. It is estimated that thousands of trout, eels and young bream are dead after some ecological incident in the river.
