This episode may get your heads scratching if you're tuning in from a society that has very specific relationship dynamics and arrangements in place. My curiosity to how other's live their lives and what they deem as healthy for their relationships has never been higher, as I am in the process of becoming the best partner and friend myself. In this episode, I speak to Akil Apollo Davis, a full-time Performing Artist & Theatre Professor of Mask and Art Aesthetic. He has been a unique and influential presence in New York City's performance, educational and cultural avant-garde for 2 decades. We discuss the ins and outs of this thing called Sex Positivity. And to give you a brief idea, sex positivity is a social and cultural movement that promotes an affirmative and open attitude towards all aspects of sexuality. It encourages individuals to embrace and explore their own sexual desires, preferences, and identities without judgment or shame. Sex positivity emphasizes the importance of consent, communication, and respect in sexual relationships. He has trained with Monks in Thailand, Brahmans in Bali, Witches in New York, and has worked with Psychologists to bridge the gaps between esoteric knowledge and classical paradigms. Akil's Karmic mantra: there must be more light. Episode Highlights Meet the one and only Akil How he went from celibacy to monogamy to discovering consensual non-monogamy Akil's understanding of attachment and fear in relationships The establishment of monogamy Accessing your healthy sexual energy The tiers of being non-monogamous, and the importance of communication on your wants and needs Emotional maturity Real life examples on how non-monogamy works The ins and outs of play parties The downsides of sex positivity/monogamy Compersion - a new word to remember Resources, courtesy of Akil:Sex-Positivity for Curious Minds 1.“The Ethical Slut: A Practical Guide to Polyamory, Open Relationships & Other Adventures” by Dossie Easton and Janet Hardy2.“Come As You Are: The Surprising New Science That Will Transform Your Sex Life” by Emily Nagoski3.“Sex at Dawn: How We Mate, Why We Stray, and What It Means for Modern Relationships” by Christopher Ryan and Cacilda Jethá4.“Opening Up: A Guide to Creating and Sustaining Open Relationships” by Tristan Taormino5.“What Makes a Baby” by Cory Silverberg (for all kinds of families)6.“Queer: A Graphic History” by Meg-John Barker and Julia Scheele7.“The New Topping Book” by Dossie Easton and Janet Hardy8.“The New Bottoming Book” by Dossie Easton and Janet Hardy9.“Girl Sex 101” by Allison Moon and KD Diamond10.“Pussy: A Reclamation” by Regena Thomashauer11.“Urban Tantra: Sacred Sex for the Twenty-First Century” by Barbara Carrellas12.“Sex God Method” by Daniel Rose13.“The Art of Sexual Magic: Cultivating Sexual Energy to Transform Your Life” by Margo Anand Psychological and Emotional Work for Curious Minds1.“The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma” by Bessel van der Kolk2.“The Sexual Healing Journey: A Guide for Survivors of Sexual Abuse” by Wendy Maltz3.“Healing Sex: A Mind-Body Approach to Healing Sexual Trauma” by Staci Haines4.“Radical Acceptance: Embracing Your Life With the Heart of a Buddha” by Tara Brach5.“The Mastery of Love: A Practical Guide to the Art of Relationship” by Don Miguel Ruiz6.“Hold Me Tight: Seven Conversations for a Lifetime of Love” by Dr. Sue Johnson7.“More Than Two: A Practical Guide to Ethical Polyamory” by Franklin Veaux and Eve Rickert8.“Love's Executioner and Other Tales of Psychotherapy” by Irvin D. In this episode, Ams and Kat explore Tantric Sex. Tantra is a complex and multifaceted spiritual and philosophical tradition that originated in ancient India. Tantric sex is the practice of using Tantric principles, such as mindfulness, breathwork and energy connection, to sexual experiences. But first, if you are looking for a little buzz without the drawbacks of alcohol, why don't try this Canna-cocktail, the Hot Buttered Cider. Mix one up while listening to this episode's hot tale: Ams, Mr. Ams and their friends have a grown-up sleepover, complete with Seven Minutes in Heaven: mini-threesomes while one person watches and keeps time. Next, Ams and Kat explore Tantric principles and past experiences with mindful sex. To learn more about Tantric Sex, the Wives interview author and educator Barbara Carrellas. Finally, the Wives set themselves sexy homework, including solo tantra work, breath and energy orgasms and all-day sex sessions. MORE ABOUT TANTRA The original practice of Tantra encompasses a wide range of beliefs, practices, and rituals, and its principles can vary among different schools and traditions. However, some core principles are commonly associated with Tantra: Unity of the Divine: Tantra often emphasizes the oneness or unity of the ultimate reality, which may be referred to as Brahman, Shiva, Shakti, or other names depending on the specific tradition. The idea is that everything in the universe is an expression of this ultimate reality. Energy and Consciousness (Shiva and Shakti): Tantra often conceptualizes the divine as a dynamic interplay between masculine (Shiva) and feminine (Shakti) energies. These energies represent the dual aspects of the supreme consciousness, and the practice of Tantra often involves awakening and harmonizing these energies. Sacred Sexuality: Some Tantric traditions incorporate rituals and practices that involve sacred sexuality. The goal is not mere physical pleasure but rather the spiritual union of Shiva and Shakti energies within the practitioners, aiming for heightened awareness and divine connection. Ritual and Symbolism: Tantra frequently employs rituals, symbols, and ceremonies to connect with the divine. These can include mantra chanting, yantra (geometric diagrams), mudras (hand gestures), and various ceremonies designed to invoke spiritual energies. Embracing the Mundane: Unlike some ascetic traditions, Tantra embraces the material world and the experiences of daily life. It encourages practitioners to see the divine in everything, including ordinary activities, and to use the challenges of the material world as opportunities for spiritual growth. Teacher-Student Relationship: Traditional Tantric practices often involve a guru-disciple relationship. The guru is seen as a guide and spiritual mentor who leads the disciple on the path toward self-realization. Non-Dualism (Advaita): Many Tantric traditions advocate a non-dualistic perspective, emphasizing that the ultimate reality is beyond distinctions such as good or bad, pure or impure. Practitioners seek to overcome dualities and realize the underlying unity of all things. Many Westerners have been applying Tantric principals to sex for over 100 years. Some of these principals include adding ritual and mindfulness to sexual experiences, focusing on breath and energy, fostering a deep connection between partners and focusing on pleasure and ecstacy as opposed to orgasm. Perhaps we can start by asking the question:What does sexual and sensual energy mean to you and how do you use yours?Could it be that many of us use these energies for Connection to our partner and ourselves or if we look below the surface find ourselves expressing sex for other means? Perhaps to control our partners? Or maybe we have sex not because we want to but because we feel we have to in order to maintain our partnership? Hmmmm makes me wonder. Perhaps for you too? If your interested, come join me Wednesday May 7th at 3pm when I have the opportunity to interview Holistic Coach and Leader of Journey’s of Wisdom, John Mc Mullin about this very deep and rich subject. For those of you that don’t know, Journey’s of Wisdom is an organization interested in promoting self-growth and empowerment through workshops, one on one coaching and other audio materials. Let’s talk about Sex Baby! Urban Tantra Sex that is.For those of you that may be wondering what is Tantra Sex? In short, it’s the Yoga of sex and surprisingly to me; intercourse is not the most important part! How would you like to dip into conscious, connected and bliss-filled sex and intimacy while cultivating more energy, wellbeing and peace? This isn’t just for you young people. Tantra can be enjoyed at any age. To me Barbara Carrellas book, Urban Tantra: Sacred Sex for the 21st Century offers just that. It is a pleasurable and sensual way to promote our health. More specifically, in a way that helps us connect to a very vital human bond of connection and sensuality with ourselves and the ones we love.Barbara and I met last week to discuss her book and I have to say, it was my most entertaining show. What a lovely and lively lady! I found her passion captivating and contagious. So it with sexy pleasure that I’m pleased to share our conversation this Wednesday April 2nd at 3:30pm (EST).
