In this episode, Michael Andrew joins us and reflects on the disappointment of not making the US Olympic team and explains what he feels led to that outcome - one of the best swimmers in the world for many years unexpectedly sitting at home instead of racing in Paris. Having given time to reflect on the necessary changes to get back on the right track to realizing his potential, Michael Andrew has made the difficult decision to change coaches for the first time in his life. A hard enough decision for any swimmer-coach pairing that achieves Olympic success, this one hits differently because Michael Andrew has always been coached by his dad, Peter Andrew. The dynamic duo, and really the entire Andrew family, has marched to the beat of their own drum. Embracing training methods like USRPT, thought by others to be a gimmick not suited for elite success, since Michael Andrew first made headlines by turning pro at age 14 they have continued to prove the doubters wrong - all the way to winning an Olympic gold medal and becoming the first man to final in all four 50-meter events at the World Championships. While USRPT will remain part of his program, and he's not quite ready to share publicly who his new coach will be, we know that Michael will now be training with a group, doing some different sets and workouts than he ever has. And for everyone wondering if he's adding the 200 IM back to his event schedule - he's not ruling anything out. Big changes ahead. We sat down with Olympic champion Michael Andrew, who is currently in Croatia with Team USA as they prep for the upcoming world championships. Andrew gives us the scoop on how training camp is going for him and what his "USRPT taper" looks like as well as what working with coaches Todd DeSorbo and Eddie Reese is like. Andrew speaks to the fine line that is towed by athletes of being teammates yet competing for the same spot on a relay, a situation he will encounter multiple times throughout the course of these championships. This week on the Propulsion Swimming Podcast we are joined by Erin Robertson. At age 16 Erin was Commonwealth Youth Champion and an age group record holder. However just 14 months later she was left feeling like a complete and utter failure, and as if she had let down every last person who had ever supported her. Because of those feelings, she left the sport. That was roughly 5/6 years ago and since then, she has returned to competitive swimming and has a newfound love for the sport again. We wanted to speak to Erin on this week's episode to discuss what lessons can be taken away from her journey through the sport, especially as an age group swimmer. Whether that be her USRPT training, racing at national championships at an age as young as 12, and how the pressure put on her by the media affected her mental health. We hope that others can improve their own journey through the sport by listening to this conversation and know if you step away from the sport of swimming, the enjoyment can come back, just like it has for Erin! The title above is for swim fans here on SwimSwam.com. If you want to play the prediction game, see my predictions below. The title probably should be How Does Olympic Swimmer Michael Andrew Handle Media Pressure? In the aftermath of USA Swimming's press conference last week with 2021 Team USA Olympian Michael Andrew, I asked him to come on the SwimSwam podcast. If you missed it, see his press conference here. He went viral because of his response about why he wasn't vaccinated. (For the record, I am vaccinated, and I recommend it. I trust the science. I also strive to respect others' opinion on this topic despite my personal feelings.) At any rate, I didn't ask Michael to come on the pod to debate or defend himself. I did want to know how he has handled the media pressure. For anyone in swimming, you know Michael's been a lightening rod since he was ten years old, back when he started his ambush on nearly every National Age Group Record in the sport. Michael unpacks his long journey and how he's handled criticism over the years, from his choice to train exclusively USRPT to turning pro at the tender age of 14. Michael also opens about his decision to not participate in Season III of the International Swimming League (ISL), which partly includes more insight about the Michael Andrew Swim Academy. Finally he deconstructs his Olympic Trials performance and looks ahead to the Olympics and Team USA's challenges in the men's relays. For curious mind, see the Michael Andrew Swim Academy here. MICHAEL ANDREW - OLYMPIC GAMES PREDICTIONS: 200 IM? Michael wins gold in the 200 IM with another 1:55 low. However, Michael swims faster in the semi, just dipping under 1:55 for a new PB. 100 breast? I'd like to see a 57 plus. I think he makes the podium, winning a bronze. 50 free? 21.3 and he's bronze or just off the podium. (I see a fast 50m free final. Dressel dips under 21 seconds, 20.86, and he pulls two more swimmers along each posting 21.1 and 21.2.) Mixed Medley Relay? Michael Andrew nets gold swimming in the prelim. Team USA switches the lineup in the final, going with King in the breast and Dressel in the Fly. Medley relay? I don't know. I think the U.K. wins, which SwimSwam Editor-in-Chief Braden backed up, and which I've already stated in our Olympic Games podcast preview (which drops Friday). SwimSwam Head of Production Coleman Hodges disagrees. He thinks Team USA wins back the gold after the 2019 World Championship loss. In E7 we sat down with Brent Rushall who has been an exponent of Ultra Short Race Pace Training (USRPT) for many years. In this episode Brent outlines why he thinks USRPT is the best training model around. We felt it was important to share this episode with our listeners to allow them to weigh up the pros and cons of any training model they are thinking of employing when they are planning their training. You can find the information Brent references at the below links - For the USRPT 7-disc DVD set http://brentrushall.com/DVD%20Sale/DVD%20Sale.htm The Swimming Science Journal is at https://coachsci.sdsu.edu/swim/index.htm More specifically, the table of USRPT articles is at https://coachsci.sdsu.edu/swim/usrpt/table.htm
Michael Andrew set over 100 NAG Records as an age group swimmer. He turned pro at just 14 years old and won his first World Championship in the 100 IM at 17. His method of training, Ultra Short Race Pace Training (USRPT), has been a bit controversial in the swimming world. Controversial in the sense that the old regime turned their noses up to it because it was the opposite of the archaic method of shoveling yardage down age groupers throats. In this episode Brett asks Michael... - if he's ever thought of changing coaches - his thoughts on the Swim Swam comments section - what events he is focusing on for US Olympic Trials - what its like being an owner of the New York Breakers - how exactly he trains using pure USRPT and currently, 3 practices a day - the Michael Andrew Academy, sign up today! On this episode of #WhiteboardWednesday we are talking about Ultra Short Race Pace Training (USRPT)!USRPT stands for “Ultra Short Race Pace Training”. The premise for this training methodology is that race-specific high intensity swimming will yield the optimal performance results and fastest times in competition. The overall goal is to simulate a racing situation in a workout to better prepare an athlete’s body for the actual race.

Key Links: Instagram: @swimmermichael Twitter: @swimmermichael Vlog Facebook ___ Laura is joined this week by swimmer Michael Andrew! Michael has always taken a nontraditional approach - from going pro at age 14, to building his own training pools, to being coached by his dad, to not logging the typically yardage of most of his competitors; but it has worked. He has broken over 100 National Age Group records and snagged seven national titles in 2018. His journey hasn’t been without hardships, however. The swimming world was immensely critical of his choice to go pro so young and once he did, the pressure to perform became almost intolerable. It wasn’t until he attended a retreat with an Olympic Chaplain that he realized his greatest victory wouldn’t be in the water, but in his own mindset. Shifting from a performance based identity to a purpose based one gave him the freedom to show up to a meet and know that he had worth and value despite the outcome. Today Kelly and Maria talk with a high-performing elite team, the Andrew family, featuring world champion Michael Andrew and his dad/coach Peter Andrew in Encinitas, CA. What Michael has accomplished at such a young age is beyond impressive. At only 19, he has already been an international sensation, winning a World Championship, multiple Junior World Titles and Junior World records, breaking over 100 age-group records and he just keeps getting faster. Recently, Michael is dominating the TYR Pro Swim Series and has won four national titles at the US Nationals last summer which qualified him in four individual events at this summer’s upcoming World Championships. “Team Andrew” has done this using a unique training method called Ultra Short Race Pace Training (USRPT). Subscribe to the Champion's Mojo podcast on iTunes, Spotify YouTube and Google Play. Leave us a review, too! On this episode, swimming phenomenon Michael Andrew and his coach-father Peter Andrew share insights to their success that include an unusual training method and an unwavering faith. Hosts Kelly Palace and Maria Parker delve into what makes the Andrew family and larger support group tick and what lies ahead for the 20-year-old swimming phenom. Helpful information mentioned in the show: USRPT: Michael Andrew uses the USRPT training method, which stands for “Ultra Short Race Pace Training” and is based on the idea that training at a higher intensity translate to improved performance. Dr. Brent Rushall, a professor emeritus at San Diego State University, is the man behind the race-pace training methodologies (USRPT) that Michael Andrew uses to train under his coach and father, Peter Andrew. International Swim League: The International Swimming League (ISL) will debut in October as the first professional sports league for elite swimming. It will host a series of competitions in the U.S. and Europe. Tina Andrew, mother of Michael and wife to Peter, was recently named the General Manager of one of four of the professional teams, the New York Breakers. Team building advice: Hosts Kelly Palace and Maria Palace share insights on successful team building, including the following components: Love, Service, Communication and Trust. Here are the four steps to building a team that they share: 1. Be clear on what you want, with specific goals. 2. Write out your dream team of a support system (evaluating what you already have). Coach/Mentor, someone that has done it Motivator, someone that wants you to succeed Divergent supporter(s), someone that has skills you lack Co-player, someone that will work with you or has the same goal 3. Motivate your team to be invested in the goal or be invested in their goals. 4. Celebrate small and big successes with the team. Have something you want to share with us?
