In this episode, Michael Andrew joins us and reflects on the disappointment of not making the US Olympic team and explains what he feels led to that outcome - one of the best swimmers in the world for many years unexpectedly sitting at home instead of racing in Paris. Having given time to reflect on the necessary changes to get back on the right track to realizing his potential, Michael Andrew has made the difficult decision to change coaches for the first time in his life. A hard enough decision for any swimmer-coach pairing that achieves Olympic success, this one hits differently because Michael Andrew has always been coached by his dad, Peter Andrew. The dynamic duo, and really the entire Andrew family, has marched to the beat of their own drum. Embracing training methods like USRPT, thought by others to be a gimmick not suited for elite success, since Michael Andrew first made headlines by turning pro at age 14 they have continued to prove the doubters wrong - all the way to winning an Olympic gold medal and becoming the first man to final in all four 50-meter events at the World Championships. While USRPT will remain part of his program, and he's not quite ready to share publicly who his new coach will be, we know that Michael will now be training with a group, doing some different sets and workouts than he ever has. And for everyone wondering if he's adding the 200 IM back to his event schedule - he's not ruling anything out.   Big changes ahead. Especially since his original appearance was recorded right before the onset of the pandemic! Oliver learns about Peter's various struggles during that time, and how he was ultimately able to triumph over them. Things turn nostalgic as the conversation gets into childhood neighbourhoods and high school house parties gone awry. Peter later shares some travel tales and reflects on his experience collaborating with colleague Peter McKinnon.   Friday, 8 October 2021   And when they had entered, they went up into the upper room where they were staying: Peter, James, John, and Andrew; Philip and Thomas; Bartholomew and Matthew; James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot; and Judas the son of James. Acts 1:13   The words now are dependent on what was said in the previous verse. The apostles returned to Jerusalem. Upon their return, Luke next says, “And when they had entered.” This is referring to Jerusalem the city. It is upon entering it that, “they went up into the upper room.”   The KJV incorrectly states “an upper room.” The use of the article defines this as a room set aside for them that they specifically used in order to meet. The Greek word is huperóon. It signifies the upper part of the house. This word is only found in Acts where it is used four times – Acts 1:13, 9:37, 9:39, 20:8. From the uses, it can be determined that such a room was set aside for gatherings. They may be for meetings, parties, funerals, and so on.   In Luke 24, it says –   “And they worshiped Him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53 and were continually in the temple praising and blessing God. Amen.” Luke 24:52, 53   Because of this, some take this as being an upper room of the temple. It is then assumed that this is where the events of Acts 2:1 take place –   “When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.”   This connection is not necessary. The wording of Luke 24:53 simply means that they went to the temple to worship often, not that they were living there. What occurs in Acts 2 is certainly at the temple though. There is a place where they met as a group, and the temple is where they went to worship. The two are probably distinct thoughts.   It is in this room “where they were staying.” Again, the older KJV incorrectly says “where abode.” Rather, it is a present participle. They were staying there, and they continued to do so now that they had returned.   At the time of Luke, this room would have been known, and anyone who wanted to check his writing for accuracy could easily have followed his narrative to determine if his words were plausible or invented. With this carefully noted by Luke, he next presents the names of those who need to be highlighted. The list is the same as that given in Luke 16:14-16, except the order is changed for a few of the names. Also, Judas Iscariot is obviously not with the apostles in Acts, having come to a gruesome end. His demise was recorded in Matthew 27:5. Luke will give a secondary description of the end of Judas in Acts 1:18.   For now, here are those listed by Luke who gathered in the upper room –   “Peter, James, John, and Andrew; Philip and Thomas; Bartholomew and Matthew; James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot; and Judas the son of James.” This is how they are listed in Luke   Luke 16:14-16 – Simon, whom He also named Peter Andrew his brother James John Philip Bartholomew Matthew Thomas James the son of Alphaeus Simon called the Zealot Judas the son of James Judas Iscariot who also became a traitor   and then again in Acts –   Acts 1:13 – Peter James John Andrew Philip Thomas Bartholomew Matthew James the son of Alphaeus Simon the Zealot Judas the son of James   Life application: If you are going to take the book of Acts in a prescriptive manner, then churches would be meeting in upper rooms. The words here describe what occurred. They prescribe nothing. Remember this, because when we get to verses that are used by some to set church doctrine from the book of Acts, you must ask, “What is the difference between this verse and the verse about meeting in an upper room?”   Be sure to think such things through and not rush ahead in setting doctrine based merely on what the text is saying. Is it only describing something? Is it prescribing something? Acts is presenting a historical account of what occurred. For the most part, it is not intended to establish church doctrine. Keep reminding yourself of this as you continue.   Lord God Almighty, You have set Your word down as a guide to us. At times, it tells us of future events. At times, it tells us of historical events. And at times, it sets forth doctrine for us to walk in accord with what is set forth. Help us to maintain the proper context so that we rightly divide the words set forth before us. Amen.

Andrew is a product strategist who currently spends most of his time focused on mental health solutions. Andrew isn’t shy about his history with anxiety and depression and talks openly about his past experiences to be a vocal advocate for mental health. At the age of 33, Andrew was diagnosed with ADHD. It wasn’t something he had always suspected but rather Andrew stumbled into the realization. Since his diagnosis, Andrew has used his ADHD to further advocate however he can - even if that means in the boardroom.   Andrew is also a father of 3 boys and married to a wonderful woman who has supported him throughout his career. She has been there through the highs and lows. Andrew often leverages his own struggles to help connect with his Son as Andrew’s Son tries to navigate his own battles with anxiety and potentially faster than normal brain. At the end of the day, Andrew believes that if sharing his own story can help just one person then it’s totally worth it. This talk takes us to chapter 2 of Mark and one of the most famous stories of all, the story in which Jesus heals that's lowered through a roof by his four friends. Now, before we go there, we talk about the geography of the area for a bit. You see, Jesus' home based became Capernaum. It's likely He “worked” from Peter's home, as this fishing village may very well have been the hometown of two sets of brothers, Peter & Andrew, as well as James & John. Notice the map below- and see the various areas where we find Jesus throughout His ministry. The sea provided easy access everywhere, it insured food (and water) were available, and it provided Him with access to crowds. SEE MAP In this story, Jesus teaches a group of people who gather to hear him. Remember, at the end of chapter 1, due to touching a leper, Jesus moved to the remote / desolate areas (1:45). When He returns, word travels quickly. The crowd becomes so large that no one else can come near. So, when four friends arrive with a paralytic friend, the go to the roof, tear a hole in the house, and lower their friend to the feet of Jesus. Far from simply lifting a few leaves on a thatched hut, this was a big deal. It broke all social norms and conventions and destroyed someone's home. Jesus sees THEIR faith and marvels, however (2:5). At this, the religious leaders (they've gathered to hear Him, too), begin questioning in their hearts as to whether or not Jesus can do this- “Who can forgive sins but God alone?” Jesus perceives this- through their silence. Then He asks them which is easier- to speak a word of forgiveness or to physically heal someone? Presumably speaking a word of forgiveness is easier, because Jesus does the more difficult in order to prove He can do the first. He tells them man to take his mat and walk. The bystanders are in awe. They've never seen anything like that, they declare. And they haven't. Remember, this the first miracle Mark records. We know the rest of the story- that Jesus is about to unleash a healing frenzy throughout Israel. But, they don't yet know that. What are the takeaways? Listen in… We talk about the place of faith, we discuss who Jesus really wants to save, and more.

Dr. Brent Rushall, a professor emeritus at San Diego State University, is the man behind the race-pace training methodologies (USRPT) that Michael Andrew uses to train under his coach and father, Peter Andrew. International Swim League:  The International Swimming League (ISL) will debut in October as the first professional sports league for elite swimming. It will host a series of competitions in the U.S. and Europe. Tina Andrew, mother of Michael and wife to Peter, was recently named the General Manager of one of four of the professional teams, the New York Breakers.   Team building advice: Hosts Kelly Palace and Maria Palace share insights on successful team building, including the following components: Love, Service, Communication and Trust. Here are the four steps to building a team that they share:  1. Be clear on what you want, with specific goals.  2. Write out your dream team of a support system (evaluating what you already have). Coach/Mentor, someone that has done it Motivator, someone that wants you to succeed Divergent supporter(s), someone that has skills you lack Co-player, someone that will work with you or has the same goal  3. Motivate your team to be invested in the goal or be invested in their goals. 4. Celebrate small and big successes with the team. Have something you want to share with us? Today's Passage Luke 5:1-11 Jesus had already begun teaching.  He didn’t need Disciples, but raising up men to carry forward the mission was part of His Calling.  Jesus was looking for a few good men. The men Jesus picked were men who were pre-Believers; your average common man.  The Disciples were men who were hungry for Truth, hungry for someone powerful to lead them.  Peter’s brother Andrew was seeking someone real; he had been a Disciple of John the Baptists’ first.  These men were all a semi- spiritual bunch, as they were all Jews, who had a working understanding of the Law of Moses and the Prophets.  These men had their own political views, many of them were spoiling for a fight, and they believed Jesus would be the one to be able to bring the fight to Rome.   Peter was a man just trying to make it, just trying to provide for his family.  He was a scrapper, an opinionated man who never minced words.  He was loyal to his band of brothers, and he was willing to fight. (He nearly split a man’s skull in the Garden of Gethsemane.)  That’s the type of man Peter was, but when Jesus first met Peter, Peter was having a rough day…   What Peter Saw… Peter saw his physical failure Peter saw his nets were empty.  He had worked hard all night. Hard work doesn’t always translate to profit, or even breaking-even.  There will be times when hard work is fruitless. Peter saw there was no provision. Peter saw that his family would go hungry. Peter saw holes in his nets. Peter saw his own exhaustion, discouragement.   Peter saw his spiritual failure. Peter saw he was a sinner.  When in the presence of the Holy, we usually feel unworthy, we oftentimes feel dirty.  Sin struggles to stand before God. What we see in ourselves & what God sees are oftentimes two different things.   What Jesus Saw Jesus saw Peter was Obedient.  Peter was willing to obey a stranger’s request, despite long odds, despite the potential of embarrassment, despite the potential of renewed loss, despite having to start over with cleaning the nets.  Peter had to swallow his professional pride & allow a carpenter tell him how to fish. Jesus saw that Peter was Humble. He fell to his knees before Jesus.   Jesus saw that Peter Worked Hard.  Peter had worked hard all night long.  Jesus didn’t hire a bum, all of the men Jesus recruited had jobs.   Jesus saw that Peter was Resilient.  He didn’t give up.   Jesus saw that Peter was Willing to Follow. Peter understood who Jesus was, even though his knowledge of Jesus was progressively revealed over the course of three years.  His brother Andrew’s assessment was that he believed Jesus was the Messiah.  Working on his brother’s assessment, Peter was fully convinced, but not fully informed, on what this Messiah’s plans and intents were.  Peter was willing to follow Jesus based on what 1) Jesus taught and 2) based on what Peter caught.   What is God Saying to You?  What is God Asking you to do? God isasking you to Follow Him. God is asking you to put Him as the priority of your life.  Jesus never asked them to leave everything, and the Disciples didn’tleave everything; they just temporarily left their stuff behind.  If they had left everything then they would have left their community; they didn’t.  They would have left their families; they didn’t.  They would have left their livelihoods; they didn’t (they returned to their boats and their nets, they never sold them).  “Leaving everything” is defined by the American reader as “sacrificial and permanent”.  In this particular instance it was neither.  Now, that’s not to say that Following Christ is not without its sacrifices.  Jesus sets the bar pretty high, and many people choose to notfulfill Christ’s commands.     Jesus didn’t take the men away from their families.  They didgo on some business trips together, but the ministry tours were brief.  His closest Disciples were Peter & Andrew, James and John, all of whom lived in Capernaum.   Where did Jesus set up his headquarters?  Capernaum.  So, these men did not leave their jobs, or their families, for three years straight.  They certainly came and went, but they did not turn their backs on their families. Just like Peter, Jesus is looking for your willingnessto make the hard call, to make the hard decision.   God may be saying to you that… Your Definition of Success can change quickly. Jesus brought total success to Peter’s total failure.  What Peter had dreamedabout had become a realitythrough Jesus. Peter’s success was amazing, but it was not fulfilling; rather, followingthe man who displayed such power and command of the elements was morefulfilling.  Friends, success in this world will only take us so far.  A lot of the time, as men, once we accomplish something or defeat something that was once considered our mountain, we begin looking for another mountain.  That’s why a lot of men who retire find another job within six months, because they’re bored, and many retired men start dying if they do nothing.  A man never really retires, he simply shifts gears and shifts focus.  A man may slow down, but he never quits.   Sometimes that drives our ladies nuts, but it’s the way it is. What is God asking youto do?  God has called you too Friend, just like Peter.  Despite your weariness of work & perhaps some temporary set-backs, despite your lack of worldly success & despite your freshly-cleaned fishing nets, Jesus has called you, because He sees something in you that you don’t currently see in yourself.  Jesus called Peter when he was at his worst: discouraged, weary, exhausted.  Does that describe your life right now?  Answer the call of Christ, and begin finding fulfillment.

Mon 5th March 2018BULGA to BYLONG- Locking the Gates This is an audio voyage up the Hunter Valley where brave communities are holding out against climate changing coal expansions. We meet:     Wannarua Elder- Pat Hansson     Ex Miner- Frank Turnbull     Community Leader – John Krey     Local Historian – Stewart Mitchell     Goldman Prize Winner – Wendy Bowman     Veteran Campaigner – Bev Smiles     Bylong Grazier – Peter Grieve AO     Guide at The Drip – Phyllis Setchell     Environmental Justice- Dr James Whelan     Lock the Gates Guides – Steve Phillips and Nic Clyde    The Bulga Community is famous for having taken Rio Tinto to court and won!     The extension of the mine was prohibited by the Supreme Court. Aboriginal sacred places and significant woodlands were protected. But their victory was short lived as the head of Rio made a special trip from London and the NSW Government promptly changed the law. Pat Hansson told us how sickened she was by the thought of the massive Warkworth Mine swallowing up more land. This area has great significance for Wonnarua People. They used to gather for Bora Ring ceremonies witnessed by European settlers but going back for untold generations. I interviewed these brave people last year when they were out protesting the sale of a road which stands between the Rio mine (now Yancoal) and the next big coal lode. Local Historian Stewart Mitchell explains how this is part of the Great North Road built by convicts and part of our National heritage while John Krey and Frank Turnbull dramatise for us why they are not giving up.      This local battle has global importance. As fossil fuels are consigned to history the people have Bulga have stood firm, fought fair and must win. This is their finest hour.      At Camberwell we met a farmer who is recognised internationally. Wendy Bowman tells of their thriving dairy farm which was made impossible by the encroaching coal mine. Despite being offered millions by Yancoal she is the last farm in the path of the mine and determined that her place will be protected. She was recognised by the Goldman Environmental Prize in 2017 https://www.goldmanprize.org/recipient/wendy-bowman/ You can join Wendy in demanding that politicians stop allowing mining to destroy rural communities. http://www.lockthegate.org.au/stop_the_coal_land_rush      The next ghost town was Wollar where only four families are between the mine and its extension. Bev Smiles and two others face seven years jail if tough new anti coal protest laws prevail. She talked to the listening tour as we gazed around at empty houses, a church and school, the services all still intact but most of the residents bought out by Peabody Energy. From Wollar we had a police escort . Maybe they thought we’d stop the bus and riot!      We bushwalked around the Great Dripping wall which will be at risk if the tunnels under the river are approved. You can join the Save the Drip campaign by contacting Phyllis Setchell at prpatita500@gmail.com      The end of the tour was in Bylong Valley. Gag Clauses prevented land owners talking to us about any negotiations with Korean Energy Company Kepco. They have bought up most of the property in this pristine valley but no sod has yet been turned Peter Grieve AO spoke to us of the old days when the Mouse races raised a million dollars for charity. The champion racehorse and sire HEROIC was born here and the land is perfect for high end farming.       Peter Andrew trialled his natural sequence farming here. http://tarwynpark.com/ His ideas to rehydrate the land and restore it have caught on around the continent but we saw men in high vis vests now in command at Tarwyn park and mine machinery parked in his sheds. It could become part of the National Trust instead of another grand canyon of coal.      It’s a climate cliff hanger for all of us. We can measure the amount of carbon dioxide pouring into the atmosphere. We can see the effects in the Antarctic, the Arctic and the Ocean but can we stop a new coal mine in a valley that looks like Switzerland? As poet Judith Wright said about the plans to drill for oil in the Barrier Reef and use the coral for limestone. It is like destroying the Taj Mahal for road rubble. But she was vindicated . It is now protected by UNESCO as world heritage.      Bylong, Wollar,Camberwell and Bulga. They are our call. 05 Mar 2018|Categories: Community Show
