This week I sat down with country singer/songwriter, Victoria Bailey. Victoria has a solid catalog of music available for streaming at the moment, including 2 full length studio albums. Her most recent release, “A Cowgirl Rides On,” was released back in October and brings a very traditional country sound, blending elements of bluegrass and gospel. Victoria and I talk about her music, her career as a teacher, and the solace horse riding brings her, amongst other subjects. Huge thanks to Victoria for joining the show, and to all of you for listening! Just Around The CornerThe Band of Heathens, Tumbling Dice Featuring Nicki BluhmThe Band of Heathens, The Man in Me Featuring Hayes CarllShooter Jennings, Leave Those Memories AloneShooter Jennings, Gene's SongHoodoo Gurus, Carry OnMike Campbell and the Dirty Knobs, Wicked MindEli Paperboy Reed, Mama TriedBrandi Carlile, Broken HorsesWard Hayden & the Outliers, Nothing to Do (For Real This Time)Victoria Bailey, Rider In The RainMatt Maverick, American DreamCorb Lund, Highway 87Old Crow Medicine Show, Bombs Away

Victoria Bailey, Executive Director of the Theatre Development Fund (TDF), speaks with Hal about making the arts welcoming for all audiences. She and Hal discuss the beauty of a child’s first visit to Broadway, how producers can support contemporary American playwrights, and the healing power of storytelling. Victoria Bailey has been the executive director of TDF since 2001. The not-for-profit organization is dedicated to bringing the performing arts to everyone. TDF sustains live theatre and dance by engaging and cultivating a broad and diverse audience and eliminating barriers to attendance and envisions a world where the transformative experience of attending live theatre and dance is essential, relevant, accessible, and inspirational. TDF fulfills its mission by expanding access through ticketing, accessibility, and information initiatives; by cultivating communities through school and community engagement programs and by supporting theatre makers through training, professional development programs, and national audience research. Highlights of Ms. Bailey’s tenure included playing a key role in the construction of the award winning new TKTS booth at Duffy Square, expansion of TDF’s award winning education programs, and the introduction of sensory friendly Broadway performances. Ms. Bailey recently completed a national research project in co-partnership with Brad Erickson from Theatre Bay Area titled Triple Play, examining ways to strengthen the relationship between playwrights, theatres, and audiences as a means to increase audience appetite for new and risky work. Previously, she was instrumental in the execution of a comprehensive study of the lives of American playwrights and the production of new American Plays. The study culminated in Outrageous Fortune: The Life and Times of the New American Play. Prior to her appointment at TDF, she had a nearly 20-year association with Manhattan Theatre Club. Ms. Bailey is Theatre Management and Producing Advisor and Adjunct Professor at the School of the Arts at Columbia University, and a member of the board at the Times Square Alliance. She recently completed a three-year term on the Tony Awards Nominating Committee. Ms. Bailey received a B.A. in history from Yale College. Don’t forget to back the Rainbow Rodeo Kickstarter! Album of the Week: Daniel Romano -- How Ill Thy World Is Ordered This is a stunning album, with dense prophetic lyrics. Romano’s delivery is eerie and damning, songs that speak truth to power with Dylan-esque poetry -- but none of his vagaries. This album has genuine power, an electrifying energy that will send chills up your arms. And it’s Romano’s 10th of the year. Clearly he’s not running out of steam. Ep. 68 TDF/TKTS Victoria Bailey Photo: By Joan Marcus Broadway’s Backbone is a podcast dedicated to the men and woman of the ensemble: The chorus of dancers, singers, and actors that are the foundation of every Broadway musical. These often-unsung gypsies are the hardest working people on the boards and are Broadways backbone. #Broadwaysbackbone #Brad2ley #Broadwayworld #Broadwaypodcasts
Victoria Bailey is executive director of Theatre Development Fund (TDF), the only not-for profit organization dedicated to serving the entire spectrum of the performing arts with programs that touch the lives of millions of New Yorkers and visitors each year. Its TKTS booths and its membership, education, subsidy, access and dance programs all further its core mission. Ms. Bailey was also instrumental in the execution of a comprehensive study of the lives of American playwrights and the production of new American Plays. Listen in as Tory, one of the most powerful people in the biz, thanks to the millions of dollars TDF generates for Broadway and Off Broadway shows, talks about all things TDF and more like: The origins of the TKTS booth and what’s next for “the trailer” (and how did it get that name anyway?). The kind of theater that excites her, and where she thinks shows are headed in the future (and she’s a Tony Nominator, so listen in folks). What happened to Audience Development Directors? Why Commercial Producers like me need non-profit institutions like TDF (and it ain’t about the booth). Where TDF will be in 20 years. This week's podcast is something a little different. Last month, the League of Chicago Theatre's hosted an event at Chicago Dramatists centered on a new book called Outrageous Fortune: The Life and Times of the New American Play, which was recently published by Theatre Devleopment Fund. Outrageous Fortune is a study of the lives of America playwrights, the relationship between playwrights and non-profit producers, and the process by which new plays get produced. The book has caused something of a stir in theatrical circles.
Theatre Development Fund executive director Victoria Bailey talks about the newest icon of Broadway, the red steps of the redesigned TKTS Booth in Times Square, and talks about both how the lines at the booth have created a "town square for the casual theatregoer," as well as what TDF is doing to combat their discovery that many of the people lounging on the steps don't necessarily realize they can buy discounted theatre tickets directly below where they're seated. She talks about her own career in theatre, from her early days taking classes and performing in Washington DC and Minneapolis to her nearly two-decade long tenure at the Manhattan Theatre Club; what drew her to TDF and what she hopes the organization can focus on in the coming years; how TDF's subsidy program for theatre productions works; TDF's efforts to introduce students to theatre, with particular attention to the Open Doors program created by Wendy Wasserstein and boasting mentors including William Finn and Frank Rich; and identifies what she believes is perhaps TDF's least known but most influential program. Original air date - September 14, 2009.
