Today, we're back in Brooklyn for an all-BK episode. First, we sit down with Tomer Blechman, chef and owner of multiple restaurants. He shares stories about growing up in his grandma's kitchen, building community through his restaurants, juggling multiple operations, and creating a family-friendly space with live music on Sunday evenings.Next, we dip into the archives for one of our favorite soulful performances from Eli "Paperboy" Reed. If you have a chance, check out his Instagram, where he teases his rendition of Sam Cooke's live performance at the Harlem Square Club. We're eagerly awaiting its full release because what he has shared so far leaves us wanting more.As we head into summer, please consider supporting HRN. Singer, songwriter, DJ and producer Eli “Paperboy” Reed has spent a lifetime mining the deep vein of Americana — from soul to country to gospel. He has put out eight albums of his own over the past 20 years, including last year's “Down Every Road,” a funky tribute to Merle Haggard. He has mentored and produced the group The Harlem Gospel Travelers, and released a long-buried recording by Cleveland blues musician Fred Davis that was actually recorded by his father 50 years earlier. And this fall he will be putting out a compilation of his 45s called “Hits and Misses: The Singles.” He's teased that with an amazing soul cover of Motörhead's “Ace of Spades,” of all things. Today he joins us to talk about his life in music. As broadcast November 10, 2022 with plenty of admiration for the keys. Tonight we begin marking the 20th anniversary of Johnny Griffith's passing. Griffith was the long-time man on the ivory for The Funk Brothers, who were Motown's in-house band, and thus you have the passing of a man whose licks made soul what it was in the golden days. Lots of new soul to explore in our Sampled funk and soul first half tonight, with tunes from The Winston Brothers, The Allergies, Object Heavy, Avantdale Bowling Club, Allen Stone, and so many other worthies. Dan Lloyd joins us once again for our AMPED rock ruckus after that, with highlights from Gina Birch, Narrow Head, and David Knudson, and a tribute to the wonderful Mimi Parker, the drummer and vocalist for Low who succumbed to cancer this week and will be most dearly missed.#feelthegravityTracklist (st:rt)Part I (00:00)Marvin Gaye – I Heard It Through The GrapevineThe Winston Brothers – Free RideThe Allergies – Sometimes I WonderTurtlenecks feat Miss Rachelle Jeanty – Break FreeObject Heavy – For The BetterAdi Oasis – Get it Got it Part II (31:25)The Harlem Gospel Travelers – Do You Know The ManAvantdale Bowling Club – Rent 2 HighThe Green with Allen Stone – Coming Home (remix)Adrian Younge & Ali Shaheed Muhammad – Jax Is BusyGhost Funk Orchestra – PrismFela Kuti – Ariya Part III (63:26)Gina Birch – Wish I Was YouWeird Al Yankovic – Now You KnowNOFX – Punk Rock ClichéCreeper – Ghost BrigadeLow – Just Make It Stop Part IV (96:19)Everclear – Year of the TigerNarrow Head – Moments of ClarityDavid Knudson – No Ways No Means (ft. Just Around The CornerThe Band of Heathens, Tumbling Dice Featuring Nicki BluhmThe Band of Heathens, The Man in Me Featuring Hayes CarllShooter Jennings, Leave Those Memories AloneShooter Jennings, Gene's SongHoodoo Gurus, Carry OnMike Campbell and the Dirty Knobs, Wicked MindEli Paperboy Reed, Mama TriedBrandi Carlile, Broken HorsesWard Hayden & the Outliers, Nothing to Do (For Real This Time)Victoria Bailey, Rider In The RainMatt Maverick, American DreamCorb Lund, Highway 87Old Crow Medicine Show, Bombs Away

Marvin Gaye - "You're the Man», приуроченной к 80-летию музыканта. В список музыкантов Артур решил добавить альбом «Walking to New Orleans» George Benson, посвященный легендарным музыкантам Fats Domino и Chuck Berry. Ofr.fm/Jazz-Blues.
Eli Reed took a trip. It started in a Boston suburb with a cheap suit and a paperboy cap. He took his suit, cap and guitar to Clarksdale, Mississippi. He stayed there just long enough to become a local musician. They called him “Paperboy” because of the cap. Then he headed up to Chicago and pretended to study sociology at the University of Chicago. While he was pretending to study, what he was really doing was looking for old records to play on his radio show, and becoming the minister of music at a church on the south side. After a while, he went back to Boston. Then he turned 21. What was it like to be a Jewish suburban kid living in the deep south, playing in black church in Chicago, singing soul music? Eli tells me “The juke joints and the black church are the most accepting and welcoming places I’ve ever been. They loved having me there because I wanted to be there and I loved them.” In his early 20s. Eli “Paperboy” Reed started making records that sounded like they could be from another era. He wrote soul music, sang with a sweet and powerful voice, and performed with a frenzied energy. He found an audience and had success, especially in Europe, and started to ride the “album cycle” life of writing, recording, touring, rinsing and repeating. His stylized, soulful songs were licensed (a lot) for use in TV and film, and he was on the way up. Eli “Paperboy” Reed says that “authenticity is a trap.” But he also says, “If you’re not thinking critically about your work you’re not doing it right. And be adamant about what you like and don’t like.” And he clearly walks the talk. Eli is incredibly thoughtful and has clearly considered the choices and the work that he’s made. “Stand behind your choices,” he says. “Be present with it. Be interested.” Before he was 30, he had become a record industry veteran, signed and dropped by both Capitol and Warner Bros., without a recording contract and and wondering what to do next and where to turn. In this episode, he tells the story of where he turned. Along the way, he talks about surviving in the record business, standing behind your choices, grappling with ambition, whether or not an artist’s career fully belongs to them, and reaching the age where you’re not new anymore. Thanks for listening. If you enjoyed it, please leave a review on iTunes and consider supporting the podcast on Patreon! And now you can also listen to the podcast on Spotify!

With an appreciation for the people in the city who died, suffered, who survived, we who cherish liberty look at the murderous attack on the attendees at the Boston Marathon. Gardner Goldsmith is joined by Furb, founder of the Freedom Book Club. They look at something that has been mentioned at the Liberty Conspiracy website, which we will cut and paste here: Homeland Security has not stopped one terrorist event. And after holding off on any political analysis, I started to think about the vulnerability one feels in a public place like Boston, an event like that... And the literal impossibility of true security that even the most dedicated police officers and politicians can try to provide. That area near the finish line is one of the most policed areas in any sporting/live/public event in the world. Yet this happened. It makes me consider the question framed thus: One might think about the percentage of cops per thousands on that street. At what level of officers/people does one think that there would have been a different outcome? I say that with no rancor towards anyone's beliefs, but just as a matter of reality. If killers wanted to kill, even a thousand more cops couldn't have stopped it. You can construct bicycles with pipe bombs in their frames and park them places. You can infiltrate the piping of the stands and tents and replace sections with pipes loaded with explosives. you can detonate bombs planted high up, loaded with metals to cause terrible damage. And all this brings me back to one insight, which is that there are (most often) reasons for terrorist acts. What are they? I won't sound "bleeding heart" when I say that, as a mathematical construct, if one cannot really stop terrorists who are hell bend on killing, then can one try to reduce the likelihood that people will be inspired to kill? Many killers don't have reasons inspired by things we can pinpoint as triggers, but many do. If this turns out to be a case of political terrorism, and we know it's impossible (or close to it) for the political machine to be big enough to stop this, then what does one do to try to reduce the likelihood of people wanting to kill for political reasons, such as disliking what the US does in the Middle East, etc? Our music comes from bands that began in Boston, and includes: The Zulus "Directly from our Hearts to Yours", The Pixies "Debaser" (as we have noted, the Pixies used to open for the Zulus, and even they said the Zulus were the best band in the city), DMZ (the precursor to Lyres) "Bad Attitude", Big Dipper "Easter Eve", Mission of Burma "That's When I Reach for My Revolver", Morphine "Thursdays" (RIP Mark Sandman), Human Sexual Response (the forerunner to The Zulus) "Blow Up" (yes, music didacts, we adjusted the volume where it loses some VUs, and you know where that happens if you know Boston music!), The Zulus "Gotta Have Faith", and Eli Paperboy Reed (great New Soul singer originally from Brookline, MA) "Stake Your Claim". Be Seeing You...

In this episode, our daring host gets weirder, singing in autotune and wishing the Breeders sang about Mexican food. Aside from that, all is normal and great within the MMMPod. Rivers Cuomo of Weezer talks about the deluxe edition of "Pinkerton," and an upcoming book, Big Boi talks about what surprising song he believes was co-written by a higher power, Carrie Brownstein talks about mixing comedy and music on the new show "Portlandia," and the experimental duo Buke and Gass ask opera sensation Andrea Bocelli a very important question. We also hear from Eli "Paperboy" Reed and Hands and Knees. If you can see that photo, Hands and Knees are up top in the way background, with one dude on the floor. The "Pinkerton"-era Weezer is front and center, Big Boi is on the right, blocking Fred Armisen, who is dressed like Carrie Brownstein. Buke and Gass are next to them, with Bocelli underneath them. And that's Eli Reed on the far left. There, that should do it. Enjoy!
