KC Johns music is infectious and with dynamic powerhouse pipes that take you on a whiskey-soaked jaunt to your favorite honky-tonk in the best way possible. Think Miranda Lambert meets Sheryl Crow with a touch of Brandi Carlisle, and you've got an artist with a voice all her own, with songs that make you feel like you've known her forever. Take “Mama didn't raise no big city pretty girl…” for example. Those are the first words sung by rising Country star KC Johns on her 2024 viral single “Rodeo Queen.” It's an upbeat rocker, awash with country steel roaring guitars. It's clear that this is more than just a song. It's a true story written from the heart. KC's mom was a champion barrel racer and her stepdad was a bull rider. They fell in love, and a true love story was born. KC always admired their story. Rodeo Queen is a tribute to their story. Born in Memphis, Tennessee and raised in Hernando, Mississippi, a small town along the Tennessee-Mississippi line, KC was surrounded by music for as long as she can remember. Named after KC and the Sunshine Band and raised on the greats like Led Zeppelin, Stevie Nicks, and Sheryl Crow. Like many successful singers, KC started singing at church, but frequent family rodeo excursions made keeping regular attendance difficult. “My mom is a championship barrel racer and my stepdad was a bull rider,” So, by 17, with her acoustic guitar, KC and her mom headed to Nashville to make her dreams of becoming a recording artist a reality. “I just took my guitar and started hitting all the clubs on Broadway asking people if I could sing on stage,” KC adds. One thing led to another, and ultimately she landed an offer to work on Carnival Cruise Lines as a cruise ship performer. “It was supposed to just be a six-month contract but ended up lasting seven years cruising around the world singing for international audiences.'” she says. Having discovered and honed her stage legs young, KC was featured in Dolly Parton's “Coat of Many Then the pandemic began. KC, along with her fellow songwriters and musician friends utilized social media to grow a new audience. They performed live online and galvanizing new fan bases across the globe. They started playing cover songs and soon integrated some of their own material. “With that whole 2020 year, I just started doing TikTok Lives, Facebook Lives, and started meeting people on the internet,” she recalls. “And they were like, ‘Man, we'd love for you to come and do a private party. Then all of a sudden, we're doing shows in Norway.'” As the world opened back up, KC continued traveling to perform at various venues and festivals. Songs like “Whiskey Break” and later “Confused” fueled the shape of things to come. She released her digital debut album Thunder in 2022 and released her own whiskey line of the same name a year later. By 2024, it was game on. “Rodeo Queen” kissed the airwaves, reaching more than 300,000 streams on Spotify alone. “Rodeo Queen” has gained significant traction reaching #28 on Texas Country radio and being recognized as one of the Top 10 songs by the Texas Country Music Association. KC has recently performed at major events like Texas Motor Speedway, Big As Texas Festival, Idaho's HWY 30 Music Fest and the Grand View Music Festival in Oklahoma. “Texas Country is so much fun,” she says. “It's very genuine, and I felt like ‘Rodeo Queen' captured my story and the passion of so many other country music fans.” As KC gears up for 2025, new songs and performances will follow. KC Johns is a unique musical force, and as she enters the next phase of her career, her mission remains clear. “I honestly just want to continue going out and meeting wonderful people,” she humbly advises. “I love relating to people through my music.” #kcjohns #musician #songwriter #country #chrispomay #livewithcdp #barrycullenchevrolet #wellingtonbrewery https://kcjohns.rocks/ https://beacons.ai/chrisdpomay https://www.cameo.com/chrispomay

Keep Your Nose to the Grindstone and Eyes on the Rhinestones... a phrase and platform written by Kaelanne as she was preparing for the 57th Annual Miss Rodeo USA competition... so what does it mean? Exaclty what it says. If you focus on your dreams and keep your nose to the grindstone and eyes on the rhinestones (a.k.a. YOUR DREAM) you can accomplish anything. This struck me as an ah ha moment during the 2024 MRUSA competition and I knew, we had to chat about this! - Jessie Lynn® On January 14, 2024, Kaelanne Quinonez was crowned YOUR Miss Rodeo USA 2024 at the Lazy E Arena during the 54th performance of the International Finals Rodeo. A Sunday she will never forget, Kaelanne is excited and proud to carry the title of Miss Rodeo USA for a year, promoting the IPRA and MRUSA organizations and advocating for rodeo and ag across the country. Kaelanne is no stranger to horses and all things cowgirl, she was born and raised on the Central Coast of California, where she fell in love with horses at the age of 4. Her mom and dad soon found out that this love of horses and all things cowgirl was in fact not a phase and that it was a passion that was as organic and unexpected as the path she would take to Miss Rodeo USA many years later. Kaelanne and her family experienced a lot of firsts together: first horse which turned into horses, first show, first IFR, and first rodeo queen titles. Kaelanne could not be representing the organization and sharing her passion for the west like she is today without the support of her fireteam at home. She left her hometown when she was accepted into Texas A&M as a Master's student, where she spent a year studying ecohydrology and the effects of drought on ranches in west Texas and where she graduated with her M.S. in Business. This proud Aggie wants to use her education and first hand experiences to promote rodeo, agriculture, and western from coast to coast, preserving traditions and promoting the future. During her year as Miss Rodeo USA, Kaelanne plans to do this by traveling to rodeos in the US and Canada, speaking at schools, town halls and conferences, and using social media to promote the sponsors of and the sport of rodeo. Rodeo is a team sport: a team between roughstock and rider, sponsor and contestants, the organization and fans. Rodeo queening is a team sport. In fact, all aspects of the western industry require team effort and collaboration. Kaelanne is excited to be a contributing part of this team, of a family that makes America special and unique. She knows, and wants to share the message, that when teams put their nose to the grindstone, everyone benefits and can keep their eyes to their dreams (or rhinestones). - Bio Provided by the Miss Rodeo USA Association

The Rodeo Queen: Symbol Of Community And Western Women

The Community of Rodeo: The world of rodeo and word “community” go hand-in-hand. With roots dating back to America's agricultural and ranching past, rodeo has continued to pave-the-way for the preservation and protection of a lifestyle that is still relevant in our modern world. While modern advancements have changed the course of America's Western Heritage, the love for this lifestyle continues to thrive through the sport of rodeo.  History of Rodeo Royalty Rodeo in the West been a local tradition since it was started by families as a community festival with horse races, picnics, games and a parade. From the beginning rodeos depend on the spirit, dedication, hard work and collaboration of volunteer members to provide their community with an opportunity to experience true western heritage through the historical sport of rodeo. Riding Pretty: Rodeo Royalty in the American West (Women in the West) by Renée M. Laegreid (Author) Riding Pretty examines the history, evolution, and significance of the community-sponsored rodeo queen, from the introduction of this new phenomenon at the 1910 Pendleton Round-Up to the advent of Miss Rodeo America in 1956 and places the main theme—connection of queens to community—within the context of the evolution of rodeo as a spectator sport and the changing concepts of gender relations in the American West. From 1910 to 1956, the community-sponsored rodeo queen's role expanded, both in terms of her responsibilities and in terms of the community she represented, local, regional, and national. While each community adapted the rodeo queen phenomenon to suit the characteristics of its own celebration, the main characteristics of the role remained: the rodeo queen as a symbol of the local rodeo and as a metaphor for western women.   Meet Our Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo Queens: Mary Caldwell Weppner, Miss Frontier 1961 Mary was born and raised in Cheyenne. Mary is founding board member of the Old West Museum, serving on the committee that started the “Cheyenne Frontier Days Western Art Show and Sale” for thirty years. She went to Stephens College in Missouri and graduated from University of Wyoming majoring in speech and education. Mary is married to Ed Weppner. She and her husband Ed have three children, Rob, Ginny, and Tricia. Mary's grandfather, Dugald Whitaker moved to Wyoming in the late 1890s and developed the Whitaker Ranch along Horse Creek near Cheyenne after following one of his older brothers to Wyoming. Mary's favorite memories of her reign as Miss Frontier was traveling with Princess Bluewater as they promoted Cheyenne Frontier Days across the West especially traveling throughout Colorado.   Shirley Holmes Churchill, Miss Frontier 1979 Shirley has a long-time involvement with Cheyenne Frontier Days.  She began riding on floats and wagons in the parades as a youngster and then horseback sidesaddle.  Shirley was the first Miss Frontier to be presented the beautiful Miss Frontier saddle.  She rode this saddle in every performance for 30 years after serving as Miss Frontier, first as Miss Rodeo Wyoming 1980 and then as a run-out girl and overseeing the timed event cattle and sorting crew.  Shirley is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd R Holmes, Jr.  Shirley was raised on and is now the owner of the 114-year-old 'Centennial' family ranch on Little Bear Route north of Cheyenne.  The ranch was homesteaded in 1910 by her paternal grandparents.  True to the Holmes family's longstanding involvement with Cheyenne Frontier Days, Shirley was the third of four Holmes family Miss Frontiers.  Shirley was inducted into the Cheyenne Frontier Days Hall of Fame in 2009.  She most recently volunteers time to the Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum.  She and husband, Brad, continue the ranching traditions and legacy today on their ranches in Colorado and Wyoming.  Shirley has said; "I don't know if I am a part of Cheyenne Frontier Days or if Cheyenne Frontier Days is a part of me".   Rylee Anderson , Miss Frontier 2017  Rylee Anderson was born and raised in Burns, Wyoming and is a graduate of the University of Wyoming where she earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Agricultural Communications. Rylee was selected to become Lady in Waiting for Cheyenne Frontier Days in August of 2015 and went on to serve as Miss Frontier in 2017. She feels so fortunate to have been able to serve her year as Miss Frontier alongside her best friend, Emily Cameron, who was her Lady in Waiting. Rylee made the move to Phoenix, Arizona where she works for Wallick & Volk, Inc as a licensed Mortgage Advisor almost three years ago. She splits her time nearly in half, traveling back and forth from Arizona to Wyoming. She's looking forward to spending a great deal of her summer in Cheyenne and is excited for all things Cheyenne Frontier Days.  Cheyenne Frontier Days As always leave a review if you enjoyed these stories and follow us on Instagram or visit the webpage of the Wyoming Humanities!
