Help produce Basic Folk by contributing at basicfolk.com/donateOk I think that Erin McKeown was really into this conversation solely because it allowed her/them to dig deep into the new record Kiss Off Kiss. Halfway through the interview, Erin proclaimed how fun it was to get to address each track... I concur! It was very fun. KoK was funded through a generous gift from a friend of Erin's, who gave away the money with no stipulations about how it should be used. Erin decided to make a record AND pay it forward with microgrants for individuals serving their community with proceeds from digital sales of the album that she'll be distributing at the end of 2021. The subject matter of the new album stems from a breakup Erin experienced a couple of years ago. They thought they were done with all that, but sneaky feelings of heartbreak found their way into her mindset when she found herself settling into the pandemic. Erin decided to challenge themself by writing as many songs as they could about the topic and bam! We got a whole dang Erin McKeown album … and she thought she was done making records! “Kiss Off, Kiss Off” The Virginia -born Erin McKeown is best categorized as un-categorizable.Whether she's playing guitar with the Mountain Goats, tearing through big band music in a tailored suit or writing an off-Broadway musical, McKeown pretty much does it all. A graduate of Brown, McKeown, over the course of her over 20 year career, has put out almost 15 solo albums, toured with Andrew Bird, Thea Gilmore, Josh Ritter and the Indigo Girls, played Bonnaroo and Glastonbury, had her music appear in commercials and TV shows, was a resident artist at Providence, RI's revolutionary community arts organization AS220 and she was the 2011-2012 fellow at Harvard's Berkman Klein Center For Internet & Society. Yes, she's busy. The recipient of a 2016 writing fellowship from The Studios of Key West and a 2018 residency at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. McKeown is currently a 2020-21 Professor of the Practice at Brown University. Her new album KISS OFF KISS OFF is a raw blast of nervy rock and roll that's got street smart grooves and real poetic grit. It's fast and catchy and it swerves with all the lippy snarl of early Joan Jett. In this chat, McKewon talks to Alex about sports, creativity, self-preservation and why she won't answer emails after 6pm. www.erinmckeown.com www.bombshellradion.com www.alexgreenonline.com Stereo Embers Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

We took a lovely drive to Western MA to sit alongside a flowing river with our new best friend Erin McKeown. OK, she might not be our best friend, but we certainly wish she was.  Erin is a force of nature.  A persistent welcoming smile immediately put me at ease. So much so that we talked for almost two hours.  Which is why this episode is in two parts.  We talk music, Musical theater, writing, name dropping, COVID, hope, and other things too numerous to mention.  Over the last few decades Erin McKeown’s unique voice and guitar playing has garnered her a loyal fanbase, has grabbed the attention of Pulitzer Prize-winning playwrights, has been awarded several Drama Desk Award nominations for her musical Miss You Like Hell, numerous awards and residencies, a writing fellowship, and is now a Professor of the Practice at Brown University.  Her most recent event was a live stream celebrating the 20th anniversary of her first album Distillation, where she ceremoniously burned the dress she wore for the album cover and many promotional photos.   The end of an era, but the beginning of another.  As we finished the conversation, a huge Blue Heron flew right by us.  Erin said it was an omen.  We looked it up. The heron symbolizes stillness and tranquility, and how these two things are needed to recognize opportunities. It also signifies determination, because there will be plenty of marshes and ponds that you will wade through in life as well.  A great way to end our conversation.

So much so that we talked for almost two hours.  Which is why this episode is in two parts. We talk music, musical theater, writing, name dropping, COVID, hope, and other things too numerous to mention.Over the last few decades Erin McKeown’s unique voice and guitar playing has garnered her a loyal fanbase, has grabbed the attention of Pulitzer Prize-winning playwrights, has been awarded several Drama Desk Award nominations for her musical Miss You Like Hell, numerous awards and residencies, a writing fellowship, and is now a Professor of the Practice at Brown University. It also signifies determination, because there will be plenty of marshes and ponds that you will wade through in life as well.A great way to end our conversation.

Erin McKeown is known as a fabulous songwriter, using guitar and keyboards with an understated production approach that fill out her songs in a particular way. Her guitar playing I find to be extremely stylistic, and she has such an amazing ear (she co-wrote the songs to the musical "Miss You Like Hell"). Erin's compositions and what she surrounds her recordings with are unerringly simple and spare, yet full. Many people have studied her, as I have. Such a pleasure and honor to have Erin as a guest on this show!! Prepare to be a bit surprised ... ~ June Millington --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/june-millington/support

Sisters who aren’t sisters, and a musician who continually defies categorization. This is episode 31 of Caffe Lena : 60 Years of Song . Thanks to Sarah for creating the list of songs and artists for this feature. The Chenille Sisters are three uniquely gifted women , who aren’t even sisters. Their quirkiness and harmonies appeal to all generations. Their country-folk sounds originally targeted big kids like us, but they have made albums specifically for kids and a PBS special led to a children’s book review series they hosted on NPR. Erin McKeown defies categorization . She started studying ornithology, you know, birds, in college before switching to ethnomusicology. Her music contains a mix of genres from pop to swing, folk to electronic. She also collaborated on a musical that was nominated for five Drama Desk Awards. Twelve Songs of Christmas

In this special NSFW episode of "12 Songs of Christmas," singer Erin McKeown makes the case against Christmas and holiday music. In 2011, she released F*ck That!--and in this episode, we do say "Fuck"--which started as a laugh and ended up being a tool to work out some demons. She talks with host Alex Rawls about her fairly typical childhood experience with Christmas, and how at some point her questions and issues surrounding the holiday came together to constitute a genuine antipathy toward the holiday season.  This conversation features music from F*ck That! as well as "Hey Lord" by Suicide and "Christmas with You (Merry Me)" by New Orleans' Kelcy Mae.  After that, Alex talks about Lucy Dacus' recently released version of "Last Christmas," which was originally done by Wham! To help explain his take on that song, Alex also plays Taylor Swift's version.

DAPHNE RUBIN-VEGA is a two-time Tony and Drama Desk nominee (1996/2004) and recipient of the Theater World, Obie (1996) and Blockbuster (1998) awards. She has been a member of the Labyrinth Theater Company since 1992. Ms. Rubin-Vega is perhaps best known for the roles she originated, including Mimi ("Rent") and Conchita ("Anna in the Tropics"), both Pulitzer Prize winning Broadway shows for which she was nominated for the Tony award. She has since originated countless roles, including Dolores in Aaron Mark's urban homage to Sweeney Todd, "Empanada Loca", (Labyrinth Theater Company) which has since become the grizzly podcast, "The Horror of Dolores Roach" on Gimlet media. Other originated roles: Rahmi, (Karen Hartman's "Gum"), Sofia, (Nilo Cruz' "Two Sisters and a Piano"), Canary Mary, (Suzan-Lori Parks' "Fucking A"; Lucille Lortel nomination), Lucy ("Jack Goes Boating") and, most recently, the role of Beatriz, the undocumented mother in Quiara Alegria Hudes and Erin McKeown's road trip musical, "Miss You Like Hell" (Lucille Lortel nomination). The last four mentioned all at the Public Theater. Broadway revivals include: "A Streetcar Named Desire" as Stella, The Rocky Horror Show" as Magenta and "Les Miserables" as Fantine. Selected film credits include: "Wild Things", (Blockbuster Award for Best Supporting Actress), "Flawless", "Sex and the City" and "Fall To Rise", as well as reprising her role in Phillip Seymour Hoffman's film directorial debut of "Jack Goes Boating". Daphne Rubin-Vega is recognized for her singing as much as her acting. She was a member of the girl group Pajama Party whose single "Yo No Se" was number one on the Billboard dance charts. They made two albums on Atlantic Records before Daphne began writing and recording solo singles for the indie dance label Maxi. In 1997, Rubin-Vega cut her first album of original music, "Souvenirs" on the subsequently defunct Mercury label and in 2006, she produced, performed, and primarily wrote "Redemption Songs" (Sh-K- Boom). Daphne has contributed to various musical projects, including her notorious version of "Feliz Navidad" for Broadway Cares and her club smash cover of "Rocketman. In 2005, she received an Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters from Kean University. "Dr." Rubin-Vega was born in Panama and raised in New York City where she lives with her husband and son.

Hello! This is the last show of July and it's been a scorcher over here on the east coast of the USA....but thanks to air conditioning we managed not to wilt. SET 1: Starting us off is the Jefferson Airplane with a Marty Balin penned song: "3/5th of a mile in 10 seconds". A live cut off of BLESS IT'S POINTED LITTLE HEAD. The Smoke has us flying with a slightly different delivery system LSD with "My friend Jack"...killer stuff from 1966. Big Joe Turner lets everyone know he doesn't need that hallucinogenic sh*t...all he needs is his "Boogie woogie country girl" played from the original source...78rpm...you betcha! Keeping with slabs of wax we switch gears and throw a 45rpm on the table with a great Beatles cover by Boxer..."Hey bulldog". SET 2: Gram Parsons keeps the 45rpm vibe going with his early band The International Submarine Band and what I consider their finest moment: "Sum Up Broke". I have no idea what they mean by that but it's a great single. Teleporting Gram 3 years into the future The Flying Buritto Brothers with "Christine's Tune". Interverntion Records remixed and released THE GUILDED PALACE OF SIN this year and it's a winner! Christine is Christine Fahr who can be seen on the cover of the LP and she's also the ghoulish looking babe on the cover of HOT RATS looking out from behind a gravestone. The Onion Radio News checks in just before south African musician and activist John Kongos rips with "He's gonna step on you again". And back to the USA with Erin McKeown and a nice ditty called "Cinematic" offa her 4th LP GRAND. SET 3: Schoolboy Cleve and his drinkin' buddies Lightnin' Slim and Polka Dot Slim mash it up with a very hard to find and great 45rpm "She's Gone" from 1954. Hop back on a plane to Canada where The Ugly Ducklings reside and "Just in case you wonder"...great stuff north of the border from 1966. The Kinks with Dave Davies handling the vocals with "Love me till the sun shines". One of my all time favs! The Byrds can't do anything wrong as far as I'm concerned …."It won't be wrong" from 1965. SET 4: Romeo Nelson with a 78 recorded in the late 20's and "Head Rag Hop"...Jesus God! I love this record! The Belltones lettin' everyone know about a "Swingin' little chickie" before Jackie Lee Cochran with one of the all time great grinders "Georgia Lee Brown" and we finish up with The Royal Teens' "Sham Rock"...That's it for this month...I'll be back next week as long as the creek don't rise and the good lord's willin'...…..

This week, on State of Wonder: a multi-city birthday party for Oregon’s milestone in silent film history, Buster Keaton’s "The General," with a brand new live score; moments of reckoning as the Oregon Shakespeare Festival responds to threats against black actors, and opens up about dealing with resistance to its equity work; and Erin McKeown drops in to bend your mind, taking gospel music into the bathroom stall.Love It Or Loath It - Portland Newest High-Rise: The YardThe new chocolate-brown high-rise building at the east end of the Burnside bridge has received a lot of attention from Portlanders, from those who think its a daring modern style to those who call it the Death Star and the Borg and think it represents all that's wrong about Portland growth. Our columnist-in-residence, Randy Gragg, talked with the building's architect Jeff Kovel of Skylab Architecture about the design of the building, factors that went into why it looks the way it does, and what sets it apart.Erin McKeown Takes Prayer into the Bathroom with the Queer GospelErin McKeown got her start in the New England folk scene, but she’s since grown into a genre dancer of the highest order, gliding from folk to big band to gospel without straining her crystal clear voice. But even for an artist who regularly tackles politics and social justice, something feels particularly urgent about the six songs that make up her first studio album in three years, the EP “According to Us.” She released its first single, “The Queer Gospel,” just days after the Orlando shooting at the Pulse Nightclub. The Hollywood Theatre Gives Buster Keaton's Silent Film "The General" a New Score for Its 90th BirthdayFilmed in Cottage Grove, Oregon, Buster Keaton’s 1926 silent film “The General” is considered one of the greatest movies of all time. The Hollywood Theatre, which is also celebrating its 90th anniversary, decided to throw a co-birthday party by commissioning an original score from the well-known Oregon composer Mark Orton, who has soundtracked everything from "Nebraska" to Ken Burns' "The Roosevelts" and episodes of "This American Life."Orton and a group of talented musicians will take the film and live score on a week tour through Oregon. Converge 45 Brings the Art Crowd to PortlandLast weekend, collectors en route to the Seattle art fair were invited to come south to Oregon for a few days of art, sun and socializing by a new event called Converge 45. We talked with the organizer and gallerist Elizabeth Leach about the event that steered collectors and art connoisseurs toward exhibitions and artist talks by local and international artists. Oregon Shakespeare Festival and Ashland Community Unite after Racist ThreatsThe community of Ashland and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival are coming together after two African American actors became the recent targets of racist comments and death threats. Nothing to Laugh About: Curious Comedy Theater Teams Up with the Hillsboro PoliceAfter Hillsboro’s police department decided to try something new earlier this year by working with improv performers from Portland's Curious Comedy Theater to improve the quality of its training, tensions between police and the community have only continued to escalate around the country.

Tiny Elvis was in town and though time was tight, we met in the green room at the venerable and venerated Tin Angel in Philadelphia. We chatted for half an hour or so, talking about many things but not getting into weighty topics like The Patriots, Red Sox and Hoss Radbourne and the Providence Grays. We did manage to talk about songwriting, amp schlepping, net neutrality, jingles and bearing Ellis Paul's Love Child. It was fun.
