In response to the Pharisees need for another sign, Jesus sighs with deep emotion. He's anguished over their blindness and persistent rejection. They claim they need one more sign, but they are “testing” Jesus, seeking to discredit him before the people. They were stuck in unbelief, determined to see him only the way THEY wanted to see him. Jesus doesn't fit their idea of what the Promised Messiah would be. And because there was no faith present, no more signs would be given.  The leaven of unbelief has overcome the hearts of the Pharisees, and so Jesus is warning his disciples not to let their unbelief blur their vision and steer them away from the truth. This is a relevant warning for us today. The enemy is most certainly trying to blind us and make us deaf to the truth. We need to stand guard and make sure he doesn't stir up unbelief in our hearts.  The questions Jesus asks aren't intended to shame them, but to instruct them, to open their eyes and keep them fixed on him and who he is. They are questions rooted in compassion and a deep desire for the disciples to understand that he's capable of supplying their every need. And he anticipates that, in time, by the grace of God, they WOULD understand. He has hope for them, that they will start to see him clearly, and they need to start understanding SOON. The hostility is growing, and soon they'll be making their way to Jerusalem where Jesus will face the cross. The disciples have to see Jesus as Son of God, not just a great prophet or their beloved Rabbi. How do we identify with the disciples? We have many examples of the Lord's powerful work in our lives, and yet, when the next hard thing comes along, we panic, we look inward, “This is hopeless, I only have one loaf of bread! What am I going to do?” We, like the disciples, don't see him clearly. But the good news is . . . Jesus isn't satisfied with our blurred vision. He continuously pursues our hearts, he seeks to open our eyes to the truth, revealing more and more of himself to us, helping us to see him for who he truly is. Jesus was giving physical sight to the blind man, but more importantly, he was giving spiritual sight to the disciples.  They haven't been seeing Jesus clearly, seeing some of him but not all of him. Jesus knows what other people are saying about him. He doesn't need the disciples to tell him, but he wants them to contrast what others believe with what they believe.  Peter proclaims, “You are the Christ.” Does he understand what that means? Does he understand all that entails and requires. Not yet, but still, this is indeed a turning point in Mark's gospel. The disciples are starting to see Jesus; their vision of him is getting clearer! May we SEE JESUS for who he truly is . . . for what he truly came for . . . for how he truly loves us.

• Paul is helping them to see how this concept of something dying giving way to new life is not as absurd as they think. This happens in nature all the time. Seed that is sown dies in the ground before the plants grow and come alive. • There's a clear physical difference in what goes in the ground and what comes out of it, and yet the essence of it remains intact. So is it with the resurrection of the dead. Our physical bodies die and rise again to new life. There is continuity between our earthly body and our resurrected body . . . and yet there are physical differences. • We inherit our earthly, natural bodies from Adam, who came from the dust, and these bodies reflect the reality of a fallen, broken, sinful world. Our bodies are weak, we have limitations, our bones can break . . . and eventually they will perish . . . to dust we will return. But we inherit our heavenly, spiritual bodies from Jesus (the last Adam), who came from heaven, but took on a body of dust (a weak, perishable, earthly body) and did what the first Adam could never do, he paid the penalty of death, he reversed the curse, and his earthly body gave way to a resurrected one. On Easter morning, he didn't appear as a disembodied spirit floating around. He was once again embodied, people could see him and touch him, they recognized him!! • What happened to Jesus, will happen to us. Our resurrection bodies will “bear the image of the man of heaven!” Philippians 3: 20-21: 20 But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body… • My current, earthly body is like the acorn, which will die in the ground, but will eventually give way to a resurrected body, which is like the oak tree: identifiably the same, but greater to an unimaginable degree…a body that is mysteriously in continuity with the body we have now but also gloriously different, one that's imperishable, unbreakable, incorruptible, immune to disease and sickness . . . it will be raised in glory and power and honor. • Our resurrection is like trading in a set of dusty, moth-eaten, moldy clothes that will rot and decay (which aren't allowed in a holy, perfect heaven) for a brand-new, royal robe that will never perish or degrade. What a marvelous exchange! • Despite all the mysterious nuances that we really can't fully know on this side of heaven, we CAN be certain that our resurrection is a future reality, we CAN be united in the hope that one day ALL in Christ will be raised imperishable and clothed with immortality, in a real resurrected, eternal, body in heaven. “Death is swallowed up in victory.” “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”

In this episode we'll discuss the second part of the story of Joseph of Egypt and his brothers. We learn how through the trials he faced, he became able to save his entire family, and the future of the house of Israel, from famine and likely certain death. We talk about how Joseph likely had great reason to hold a grudge against his brothers for their harsh treatment of him, yet he forgave them. We'll discuss the importance of forgiveness and how it can help us move past feelings that can contribute to poor mental health.
