In this deeply personal episode of The Build Show Podcast, host Matt Risinger opens up about his 20-year business journey, sharing hard-won lessons about debt, financial struggles, and the path to recovery. As he reflects on three significant anniversaries - 20 years in business, 10 years debt-free, and 15 years since accumulating massive debt - Matt provides a candid warning to fellow builders about the dangers of speculative building and overleveraging.Matt recounts his early days starting Risinger Build in 2005, moving to Texas without connections and turning to spec homes to build his reputation. What began as calculated risks quickly spiraled into financial catastrophe during the 2007-2008 recession, ultimately leaving him $300,000 in debt and on the verge of bankruptcy. He shares the painful reality of paying $7,000 monthly for four years to dig out of debt, the strain on his marriage and family, and the spiritual journey that helped him persevere. This episode serves as both a cautionary tale and an inspiration, demonstrating how contentment, faith, and disciplined financial management can lead to recovery. Matt emphasizes the importance of avoiding the trap of comparing yourself to clients' lifestyles and the dangers of using debt to fund desires rather than necessities. Now completely debt-free except for his mortgage, Matt offers practical wisdom for builders and entrepreneurs about sustainable business growth and the true cost of financial overextension. Monique Rodriguez's journey is one of resilience, purpose, and bold reinvention. She dedicated nearly a decade to healthcare as a registered nurse, but the loss of her son in 2013 shifted everything. In the wake of that tragedy, Monique found clarity—and the courage to follow a lifelong passion for beauty. With no formal business background, she launched Mielle Organics from her kitchen and built it into one of the fastest-growing textured haircare brands in the country. Now, Mielle Organics is not only a staple in major retailers like Target, Walmart, and CVS, but also a study in authentic brand-building. Her approach is rooted in community, education, and transparency. As the CEO, she's built trust by simply being herself—from going live every day during the pandemic to letting customers weigh in on packaging decisions. She's also navigated the complex world of retail expansion by knowing when to say no and when to scale up.In 2021, Mielle took on private equity for the first time. Just 18 months later, she and her COO, who happens to be her husband, Melvon, sold the company to P&G — but not before making sure the deal would preserve the integrity of the brand. Monique still runs the company today, and she's focused on building a legacy, not just a business. Monique recently added “author” to her list of titles with a book that helps people find purpose in their own stories. She lives in Chicago with her family, where she balances leading a global brand with slow mornings, warm lemon water, and staying grounded in faith.Timestamps:[00:00] Introduction [07:52] Starting a business without experience or connections[08:34] Learning the business side and asking for help[09:20] The challenge of raising capital as a Black female founder[10:10] Bootstrapping Mielle before taking on funding[10:59] Why Monique turned down Walmart the first time[12:30] Building long-term sustainability, not short-term hype[13:00] How Mielle went viral with rosemary mint oil[13:44] Creating viral moments through authenticity[14:22] Building trust through storytelling and transparency[15:05] Turning customers into community[15:42] How Monique stayed present online without burning out[16:19] The power of community to support during backlash[18:52] The emotional link between beauty and customer loyalty[19:30] Building real connections at trade shows[20:02] Standing out in a crowded beauty industry[20:50] How community building helped attract investors[21:32] Education as a brand differentiator[22:10] Creating emotional experiences around products[23:02] Going big at trade shows to make a lasting impression[23:55] Using experience to fuel word-of-mouth marketing[25:10] Sharing behind-the-scenes with her community[27:20] Handling criticism and negativity online[28:13] Protecting mental health while being a public founder[31:12] The reality of criticism for successful female founders[31:58] Taking on private equity from Berkshire Partners[32:44] Why Monique wanted to maintain majority ownership[33:40] Finding the right kind of investor partnership[34:21] What to look for in a private equity deal[35:04] Planning for an eventual acquisition[35:40] How fast the P&G acquisition came together[37:06] Choosing the right partner over the highest bidder[39:30] Benefits of selling to a strategic like P&G[40:18] Brand globalization and new opportunities[40:50] Access to better ingredients and scientific resources[43:48] Balancing business and marriage[46:00] Monique's slow morning routine[49:18] Key lessons around mindset, faith, and perseveranceResources Mentioned:The Glory in Your Story by Monique Rodriguez | Book or AudiobookMielle Organics | WebsiteP&G | WebsiteBerkshire Partners | WebsiteFollow Nancy Twine:Instagram: @nancytwinewww.nancytwine.comFollow Makers Mindset:Instagram: @makersmindsetspaceTikTok: @themakersmindsetwww.makersmindset.com

Two-time Emmy and Three-time NAACP Image Award-winning, television Executive Producer Rushion McDonald interviewed Dexter B. Jenkins. He is a Pastor, real estate entrepreneur, financial strategist, and host of Let’s Talk Real Estate. He is also the author of the newly published The Real Estate Wealth Creator Blueprint: Keys to Overcoming Fear, lack of Money, and Inexperience to Possess the Land. “The Real Estate Wealth Creator Blueprint by Dexter B. Jenkins isn’t your typical feel-good faith and finance book. It’s a wake-up call, plain and simple. For far too long, many believers have been trapped by misguided notions that faith and wealth don’t mix, or worse, that seeking financial success is somehow ‘unholy.’ Dexter blows that myth out of the water. As a pastor and financial mentor, he challenges you to stop limiting God’s abundance with a middle-class mindset. Real estate is the tool, but your faith is the engine that drives wealth creation. This book forces you to confront your beliefs about money, faith, and God's will—and if you’re not ready for that, this book isn't for you. But if you’re tired of playingsmall and are ready to align your beliefs with action, The Real Estate Wealth Creator Blueprint is the no-nonsense guide that will take you there." #BEST #STRAW #SHMS Support the show: https://www.steveharveyfm.com/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Power of Faith and Resilience in Transforming Your Business Journey Building a successful business while maintaining a strong sense of personal grounding can be challenging. However, the power of faith and resilience in shaping one's dream life and business is truly astounding. Prioritizing time to pray helps guide your days to accomplish your goals and stay strong in faith in Christ. The Power of Faith in Staying Grounded Prioritizing faith as the center of life and business helps keep you grounded, particularly in overwhelming moments. Starting each day focused on His word through Bible study and time to pray, clarifies the day ahead and reminds you of what is most important. When we begin our day with the peace of God, that is something we can hold onto and look to as the chaos of what the day might bring tries to take over. Redefining Success Through God When we begin our day in prayer and with God, we look at our business and how we define success through a different lens. We all have God-given gifts, and if you have been called to help serve others through coaching, you must remember why. Remembering your calling and measuring success by your impact rather than the number of dollar signs you make brings immense peace to your day and helps keep you focused on serving your clients. Is there a Right Way to Pray? Prayer is a conversation with God. It is an opportunity to share with Him as a father and a brother, a place to find comfort. As long as you are conversing, there is no right or wrong way to pray. When you get more specific about what you seek guidance with and fully share what is going on in your life, God will answer that prayer. The power of faith is in knowing God will answer in his time and finding gratitude in his answers. Navigating Social Media and Business Growth Entrepreneurs are under enormous pressure to maintain a social media presence. This pressure leads to comparing yourself to others and imposter syndrome, which is the idea that if you are not doing precisely what someone else is doing, you may not be an expert who can help others. Rather than putting your efforts solely into social media, building a solid foundation for your business is essential. This can be done through search engine optimization to help your soulmate clients find you. Building a website that speaks to who you are, sharing information through meaningful blog posts and podcast interviews, and building relationships through networking and collaborations are all ways to connect with your soulmate clients without falling into the social comparisons so often associated with social media. In this episode of the Marketing Secrets podcast, I continue my in-depth conversation with Josh Forti, exploring the ideas in Atlas Shrugged and diving into the intersection of personal beliefs, entrepreneurship, and family values. Throughout this series, we've tackled sensitive subjects like religion, politics, and the evolving role of family, all framed within the philosophy of Ayn Rand's classic. In this fourth installment, Josh and I examine the driving forces behind entrepreneurship, the challenges of staying true to core values, and how these principles influence both business and personal life. Josh and I discuss how our upbringings and relationships with our parents shaped our outlooks and entrepreneurial spirits. We reflect on how pivotal those early family values were to our development, particularly the roles of our fathers as hardworking role models and our mothers as sources of unconditional support. We also talk about the significant impact of maintaining a balance between masculine and feminine energy in relationships, a concept I first explored with Tony Robbins. Key Highlights: Parental Influence: How family dynamics and values shape entrepreneurial drive and personal development. Masculine and Feminine Energy: Insights from Tony Robbins on balancing energies in relationships and their importance in family stability. Entrepreneurship and Influence: The role of communication in making complex ideas accessible and influential to a broad audience. Philosophical Conflicts: Navigating the concepts of charity and self-interest in Atlas Shrugged and reconciling these with our faith and moral values. This episode is packed with personal insights on navigating life as an entrepreneur while remaining grounded in one's values. Join us as we reflect on the intersection of philosophy, family, and business and how they shape our path forward. Two-time Emmy and Three-time NAACP Image Award-winning, television Executive Producer Rushion McDonald, interviewed Ozell Graham. He is a US Army Veteran who started The Fade Shop Brand in 1996 inside a tent while serving his country deployed in Bosnia during Operation Joint Endeavor. After eight years of Honorable Service, Ozell transitioned back into the civilian workforce, moving to Arkansas to pursue his career in Cosmetology. Upon graduation, Ozell moved to Dallas, Texas, where he worked in several barbershops where he learned more about hair and how to run a business. In 2005, Ozell stepped out on faith and followed his dream of entrepreneurship, and opened his first barbershop in Dallas. He currently has three successful locations in the Dallas Metroplex, and a Hair and Skin Care Product Company called AT Ease! AT Ease Hair and Skin Care's Mission is to provide universal hair and skin products, education, and training to consumers so they can maintain personal grooming for healthy hair and skin, leaving them relaxed and worry-free. *Talking Points/QuestionsHere are 5 Effective Steps to help you grow and Maintain a Healthy BeardStep 1- Let your facial hair growStep 2: Once you have a beard, big or small, you want to wash it using a beard wash. This will remove any dirt, product buildup, and dry or flaky skin that can cause a blockage that stunts hair growth. Keeping it clean will also open your pores and allow your beard to grow smoothly through the skin.Step 3—After your beard is clean, you want to add a non-pore-clogging beard moisturizer or oil. This will keep your hair and skin moist to prevent dryness, protect the hair from breakage, and prevent skin cracking. Doing this will also improve your hair and skin's texture. Step 4-Brushing or Combing your beard daily helps distribute the natural oils to moisturize, while stimulating blood flow that can improve beard growth because the more nutrients that are going to your beard follicles will return a healthier beard.Step 5-Maintain a nice curb appeal on your beard keeping your borders (top and bottom) clean and neat by using a trimmer or razor. Doing this will be a great foundation for that Stand Out Beard. #BEST #SHMS #STRAWSupport the show: https://www.steveharveyfm.com/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
