Today's episode covers the personal story of a mother who has been through postpartum anxiety, severe colic, and complicated family transitions. Through her difficulties, she has thrown herself into learning about perinatal mental health challenges, supporting herself, and helping other families. Christine Carrig is the director of Carrig Montessori School in Brooklyn, NY. She holds a master's degree in Early Childhood Education as well as a Montessori certification. Christine has trained as a postpartum doula through both DONA and Ayurvedic Mamas. Most recently, Christine founded The Family Flow, a community that offers online courses for parents of young children, with the aim of helping parents understand and support their children so they can guide them through the messy terrain of development. Christine lives in Queens with her husband and four young children. Show Highlights: In 2012, Christine's first daughter was born after a wonderful pregnancy As a new business owner of a Montessori school, Christine pushed herself too hard as a new mom and was shocked at her hypervigilance and how it depleted her energy How Christine noticed that her daughter was extremely sensitive and easily overwhelmed by her emotions and frequently overstimulated; she also had sleep issues In 2015, her son was born after a more challenging pregnancy for Christine, and she felt like there was a cloud over her all the time How her daughter started showing harmful aggressive behavior toward the baby and Christine to the point she feared being alone with the two children How Christine felt inadequate to walk through this terrain of transition with her daughter to the point that she felt like a failure as a mother How Christine's relationship with her own mother changed and left her feeling unsupported and isolated in an extended period of estrangement between them How her newborn son's fussiness and vomiting escalated into full-blown colic, and Christine drew strength from her husband's calm optimism How an interaction with her sister gave Christine a new perspective on her situation When her son's colic settled down around nine months, she sought help from acupuncture, therapy, and learning more about her daughter's unique needs When Christine became pregnant again, she feared a repeat of her postpartum experience, so she took maternal mental health training and listened to the Mom & Mind podcast, trying to make a different plan for herself and her older two children How Christine took physical and emotional space after the birth of her third child to authentically bounce back and learned to ask for help With her fourth baby, she hired a postpartum doula to help and learned how to ask friends and family for specific help How she made her basement her “recovery cave” and took some “sitting in” time, which left her recovered, steady, and calm as a new mother of four children How Christine helps other families through her Mindful Parenting program at her school and her online classes Resources: The Family Flow
Have you ever found yourself in a place in life you hadn't intended to go and then wondered, “How did I end up here?” Maybe you were dealt a setback, felt unsettled about the world, or faced an uncertain future. You knew It’s like you’d drifted off course, but weren’t sure when, why, or what to do about it. Drifting robs us of the energy, vision, and passion we need to move forward with confidence. When Christine found herself in one of those “How did I end up here?” places got to this point in her life a couple of years ago, she couldn’t hide her shock and God mercifully intervened to show her how to get back on track. Listen in as Christine reads the opening to her new book on this very topic and vulnerably shares her own experience of wanting to ring the bell. This week’s guest originally appeared on episode three of the Dating Den podcast. Now, she is the VP of Client Success. Christine Kriner rejoins Marni on the show to share the incredible breakthroughs and relationship shifts she experienced after trusting the process. Key takeaways from this episode: What may be holding you back from having a great relationship Benefits of setting boundaries Courageous moves to help you find your vision Looking at every situation as a learning experience Take Action & Apply the Lessons [2:06] Before joining the Institute of Living Courageously Crew, Christine worked for 20-years in the field of personal development. She helped others to develop themselves but never applied the lessons to her own life. She never experienced breakthroughs. But, after some deep listening to Marni's coachings and to the outcomes of other clients, she started applying it to her life and experienced some consequential shifts. Christine says it changed her. She doesn't believe she would be in the amazing relationship she is in now if she hadn’t taken action and applied the lessons. Christine says her father told her when she was young that humans aren't monogamous. So, she didn't expect it from her relationships. She would pick the wrong men, the bad boys. She thought she was attracted to the hard-to-get, handsome guy. Marni and the other master coaches helped her go deeper to uncover some trust issues. She didn't trust herself and she never felt enough. Set Boundaries [13:59] When Christine realized she was enough, she started setting boundaries and stopped over-giving of herself and her time. Suddenly, the energy of her relationship shifted. She expressed her needs to her partner and he would do whatever it was to make it happen. The relationship dynamic changed entirely. Christine stopped over-giving and her partner started giving of himself more. There is no express bus to get the life you want. You have to make bold courageous moves to reach your vision. Trust the Process [25:22] Christine recommends trusting the process because if you do the work it pays off. She says even though she sometimes makes up a story in her head about a situation, she assesses where it came from and decides whether or not it is more about her past or a current need. When you fail, fail forward because you learn something. Christine’s advice for other women looking for a fulfilling relationship, ‘Look at every situation as a learning experience’. She never thought having a connected, vulnerable conversation with her partner would be the perfect Friday night date. “Being open to the idea that your dreams coming true often look very different to how you first imagine them.” Bringing compassion and kindness; intentional generosity into whatever space is possible. That's what Come From Away's Christine Toy Johnson is all about. In fact, that's what this whole episode is about. From sharing where we were on 9/11 to global world views in casting a representation, in this episode we tackle what it means to integrate compassion, kindness, and intentional generosity into our art. When did Christine start to identify as a multi-hyphenate? When Christine was four years old, she began as a child model who also put on plays for her family about the Twelve Days of Christmas. It wasn't long after she realized she needed to do many things not just to survive, but to find happiness. Christine is an actor, writer, director, and advocate for inclusion and her career truly is an extension of her soul. Right at the top of her bio, she prides herself on breaking the color barrier. What does that mean? When Christine started out in the industry, there was almost an expectation of the roles she could play. On representation, Christine says, “There is a direct line between underrepresentation and the perpetualization of harmful stereotypes all the way to the dehumanization and erasure of the three dimensional people that make up the population whose actions are they trying to reflect.” In the episode, Christine breaks this down from the perspective of an advocate for inclusion. Christine is right - and she's built a career on being right! But of course, we're human and sometimes we get in our own way. But Christine always rises above. She says, “There's no time to wallow in self doubt that would debilitate you and take you off course.” Speaking of rising above, Christine took quarantine by the horns and focused on her writing. She finds her through line is about belonging, finding her place in the industry, and being sure that we all belong, all while finding that other people (consciously or subconsciously) disagree. This episode is full of joy, inspiration, first hand experience, and lots of helpful steps for budding producers and creators - for example, what a grant is and how to apply for one. As always, please rate, review, and subscribe to Dear Multi-Hyphenate! Christine Toy Johnson is an award-winning writer, actor, director and advocate for inclusion. Her written works have been produced and/or developed by the Roundabout, Village Theatre, Barrow Group, Prospect Theatre, Weston Playhouse, O'Neill, Women's Theatre Festival, CAP 21, Greater Boston Stage Company, the Abingdon Theatre Company and more and are included in the Library of Congress's Asian Pacific American Performing Arts Collection (Playwrights Division). She is an alum of the BMI Musical Theatre Writing Workshop, was a 2016 fellow of The Writers Lab (supported by Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman and Oprah Winfrey), serves on the Council of the Dramatists Guild and is host of the Guild's podcast "Talkback" on Broadway Podcast Network. As an actor, Christine has appeared extensively on Broadway, Off-Broadway, in regional theatres across the country and nearly 100 television and film appearances including recurring guest star roles on Marvel's “Iron Fist”, “Bull”, “The Americans”, “You”, “Law and Order: SVU” and more and is on "extended intermission" from the North American tour of COME FROM AWAY. When Christine arrived today, she announced that she just feeling it. At first we didn't take any notice of it, but then her mood set in. What mood, you ask? Well, we weren't really sure either, so we dove into it a bit and tried to determine why she was having "a day". We don't think we ever got to the bottom of it, but you may be able to figure it out on your own. Also on the show, Fish learned what a "Boston Tea Bag" was in a Connie and Fish Flashback, we learned a little bit about the COVID-19 vaccine that is starting to be distributed from Kalamazoo, and Fish shared with us a list of the sexiest movies of all time. All of that and much more on today's show!
Christine Ann Olivas Former homeschooled Fundamentalist. Marketer. Comic, storyteller, writer. Creator: 7 shows. Founder: @offmiccomedyschool From her Fundamentalist Christian, homeschooled upbringing to her liberal arts education in California, Christine's life has been a study in extremes. But whether we're talking organized religion or modern media, Christine insists on asking provocative, important questions about the ideas and practices we take for granted. Especially if they negatively affect women, body image, and sex. Christine started her arts journey as a fiction writer, with short stories focused on on the intersection of gender, sex, and technology. She gives us complex female characters that are both longing for more and self-isolating in a world that doesn't seem to understand them or want them to exist. Her short fiction has been published in Vol. 1 Brooklyn, Paper Darts, Breakwater Review, Alternating Current, Aptly, and on Catapult Community. She is also currently working on a full-length book about her life that will combine personal essay and memoir. When Christine relocated to Philly in 2018, she began studying and performing two new art forms: first-person storytelling and standup comedy. Since then, she has performed on local comedy/storytelling shows (Tell Me a Story, Comedy Incarnate, Story Hole, and Pass the Mic, to name a few) and at established venues in Philly (Punchline, Good Good Comedy Theatre, Philly Improv Theater), Tempe, Las Vegas, and NYC (Greenwich Village Comedy Club, Broadway Comedy Club). Christine is also a talented, visionary show producer in her own right, creating and hosting comedy shows that equally benefit performers and venues — while thoroughly engaging audiences. After creating Jenkintown's first comedy showcase, she now hosts “The Afternoon After,” Philly's first and only daytime open mic. She is also the brain behind and co-producer of “No Mo' Sexual FOMO,” a monthly experience combining standup and sex education. Since the pandemic began, Christine has quickly pivoted to taking standup comedy online. Already, she has produced and hosted a recurring virtual roast battle called Doomsday, two editions of Fools for Good (which benefits Philly venues, performers and non-profits), and is working on a virtual edition of No Mo' Sexual FOMO. When Christine showed up today she was wearing a button up flannel shirt, normal pants, and makeup. Why is this noteworthy? Because normally she wears sweatpants, no makeup, and doesn't do her hair. So, we were sure that she was trying to look good for an interview and we asked you where you thought she'd be interviewing. Also on the show, Christine showed off her push up skills by pumping out 10 live on the air, we got yet another weird monolith update, and we asked you when your "I don't get paid enough for this crap" moment was at work. All of that and much more on today's show!

Give this woman an opportunity to do something, and she is going to jump right in! Christine is a self-acclaimed "joiner" which has brought her many memorable experiences. Christine is one of those people you always want to be around. She's kind, caring, warm-hearted, and one of the most personable human beings you'll ever meet! We were so fortunate to get the chance to find our more about her in this interview. We start off by talking about some cool personal sports moments. She enlightens us in on a hockey game where a Bruins legend flipped her a puck that she still has to this day! When Christine graduated from high school, she wasn't quite sure what she wanted to do with her life. She ended up going to a college that was close to home where she was able to commute back and forth. Because she is very outgoing though, she knew she had to keep her weekends fun and enjoyable, so she visited friends at different colleges all over the northeast! We then briefly grazed over her work life which is where her OTCFit bestie Siobhan comes into the picture! Her work also led her to meet her husband. Be sure to listen to the romantic/hilarious story of how Christine and her husband starting dating! It's a good one. Once her and her husband got married, one month later her husband had a pretty significant health scare. Fortunately, he fully recovered from this, and then they decided they wanted to try and start having babies! This is another great story you're definitely going to want to follow along for.Ultimately, Christine had twins!!! Her two daughters, Lily and Kenley, are pretty remarkable where they actually have different birthdays although they are twins. Lily is 5 hours older then Kenley, and born on the day prior! I found it fascinating when Christine told us how her and Marc (her husband) could already tell the personalities of each twin when they were in the womb and how their personalities still hold true to this day.We then segued into how Christine found Firewall and what she loves so much about the community and OTCFit program (soon to be FWFit). She is definitely a die-hard Firewaller and we can't thank her enough for that!Christine, thank you so much for taking the time out of your busy day to sit down and record this amazing episode. It was so much fun getting to know you more, and I know all our listeners will greatly enjoy your story as well. You're a rock star!
Wingnut Social: The Interior Design Business and Marketing Podcast
A project minimum might be a concept you’ve toyed with if you’re in the interior design industry. When you need to bring in some Benjamin’s to run your business it can be an appealing option. But how does it affect your business? Will you see a decrease in leads or clients? Thankfully, Darla and Natalie’s guest Christine Lin will shed some light on the subject. Christine has been in the design space for only two and a half years, but she’s already making waves in the San Francisco Bay Area. One year after she launched her firm she decided to implement project minimums. To find out what that looks like for her and how it’s impacted her business, listen to the whole episode of Wingnut Social now! Dweck Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harari Does a project minimum make sense for your business? When you’re just getting started, it's imperative that you take the work that comes your way to build a portfolio. But as you’ve adjusted and begin to settle into the niche you desire, do you toy with the idea? According to Christine, there is a point where you need to stop taking on small projects that don’t net any profit. You have to be able to cover your overhead expenses. Are you covering the costs of your office? What about paying your staff? Christine also notes that setting a certain minimum cost will determine the types of projects you receive. She loves large projects where she gets to renovate and design an entire home. Setting a design fee minimum of $10,000 and a budget minimum of $50,000 helped weed out the smaller projects. It allowed her to focus on what brought her joy. How did a project minimum budget affect her business? When Christine implemented her project minimums, she didn’t experience a gap in clients or loss of business. Instead, she started getting leads for larger projects that fit her vision and expertise. She will accept lower project budgets on a case-by-case basis if it piques her interest—such as the project she did with Ayesha and Steph Curry. Christine is clear about her project minimums on her website and in her contact form. She enjoys vetting client inquiries and answering their questions. She often finds that when she speaks with them she is also educating them on costs (which can be quite high in her area). The process allows her to help adjust expectations while also feeling out if the project would be a great fit. Her take it or leave it approach suits her and her business continues to thrive. As Female Detailers continue to explode into the marketplace we wanted to sit down and have a beer with one of the hottest companies out there. We were very thankful that Christine @pfs_christine from @2DetailGirls took time to talk with us about how she has grown her business a little different then most. When Christine was in need of someone to help her business she did something very different when it was time to grow her biz...she gave ownership to her apprentice Christine @666xmom . Yes that is correct, they are both named Christine and yes she gave up ownership to someone else. There are many Detailers trying to grow and are struggling to find team members to help. This approach from Christine might seem a little strange to you but wait till you hear about how well it’s worked. DJ and Marshall enjoy a really nice Belgian Golden Ale from Duval Brewing. Christine drinks the Cuvée Van De Keizer Blauw Belgian Strong Ale. Want to get to know the 2DetailGirls...u will see them at Sema Pint Night coming up in a couple weeks. When Christine has a tough day ahead of her, she has to give herself a mental pep talk to prepare herself to tackle the challenge. She reminds herself that it's not going to roll out the way you think it will. So she releases attachment to the outcome to make space for what will unfold. “Don’t be so married to how you expect it to work out, but be confident that it will work out the way it was meant to.” Christine reminds us that we can’t put so much pressure on ourselves. Prioritization helps but she doesn’t beat herself up when she can’t take on everything. Some things are okay to wait until tomorrow, and this constant pressure pulls attention away from being present and at your finest. She strives for balance. My favorite part of the conversation is when Christine asks women to move into action. Whether you’ve had success or are in the process of building something, it's imperative for women to give each other a hand up. This is as simple as making an introduction, buying a product, writing a recommendation, suggesting a sister for the stage and supporting the women in your network. We need to move away from just being emotionally supportive and move toward action-driven support. How can our intentional community support Christine? Check out what she's building at Climb Real Estate. And, if you are a woman in the trenches at Climb or in the real estate industry, reach out and let us help tell your story. You can do this easily by getting involved in the WomanUP! movement and don't forget to check out Christine's story here. Follow Christine on Facebook and Instagram.

Christine McDonald is the author of “Cry Purple”, her memoir, and “The Same Kind of Human” a book about “seeing the marginalized and exploited through the eyes of grace.” http://www.christinesvision.org/ The wisdom and insight Christine shares in “The Same Kind of Human” is hard-earned; she spent 17 years homeless and on the streets, where she was sex trafficked, addicted to drugs, and arrested more than 100 times alongside 7 stints in prison. When Christine decided to get clean, educated, and out of danger, it was not an easy journey. Today, she has dedicated her life to helping others break down the barriers imposed on them by themselves and society, and helps people harness the power of their entrepreneurial mindset and their story to make the world better and more just for all of us.

She is a serial entrepreneur who has already owned and ran seven different companies in the past 14 years, including two six-figure exits. Her newest ventures are The Luxe Car Collective and Kindred Quarters. Aside from business, she is a car enthusiast, and loves racing motorcycles, running marathons, and traveling the world. Christine clearly has an extensive background as an entrepreneur. She’s started and sold many companies, and she takes the time to tell us all about the many NO’s she received. So often entrepreneurs look at each NO as a failure, but Christine doesn’t waste her time thinking that way. Instead she believes that there is a YES to be found in every NO, you just need to find the way there. Christine shares some of her biggest NO’s, like having to deal with a huge two year lawsuit that she couldn’t talk with anyone about. She had to keep her upbeat, positive nature even on the toughest days. The reason she was so successful in doing this is because she had great support in her lawyers and business insurance. In this episode not only does Christine share why having a positive outlook is so important in business, but she also shares why having great business insurance and supportive lawyers is so important. Waves of Service Leader Christine Pechera (Pepperdine University Seaver College Graduate Student '15) speaks about her experience recruiting minority audiences for her nonprofit organization (Asians for Miracle Marrow Matches). When Christine was in need of a bone marrow transplant, there were 4 million people in the donor registry. Unfortunately, only about 120,000 were Asians who could be potential matches for her, limiting her chances in an already difficult process. Asians for Miracle Marrow Matches works to recruit additional minority donors for bone marrow transplants. They are working to get more donors from Asian, African American, and Hispanic/Latino populations, which only make up a small fraction of the total donor registry. Christine speaks about how her organization reaches its target audience. This event was part of the Nonprofit Leadership Speaker Series by Seaver College's Business Administration Division at Pepperdine University in 2011-2012.
