No matter how some people try to deny it, we humans are very tribal. And for the most part, that can be a good thing if we will forego any sense of tribal superiority. So if one is excommunicated from a tribe the mental and spiritual toll can be significant. In her book ‘Ghosted' Nancy French describes her upbringing in a Fundamentalist Christian church and early alliance with conservative Republican politics. For years she made her living as a ghost writer for several prominent right-wing politicians. But when she and her husband declared themselves to be Never Trumpers, doors closed, calls were ignored and friends abandoned them. In this episode we speak with Nancy about the trauma, betrayal and heartbreak of maintaining high principles in the face of such challenges.

In this episode, Penny shares what led her to share her story with the world, and her process of recounting her abusive relationships. She hold nothing back as she talks about what she endured and how she made it through to a live of love and happiness. Penny shares her experience with a Fundamentalist Christian world and how it impacted her years later. She talks about the message behind the book and her hopes for what readers will take from it. Unfortunately we loose Jon around 1.26hrs in, but stay tuned as we do get him back ! Summary You can find Jon - https://www.instagram.com/jgdecorator?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igsh=ZDNlZDc0MzIxNw== In this episode, John Graham shares his personal journey of growing up in a fundamentalist Christian group and eventually leaving it. He discusses the impact of his religious upbringing on his mental health and the challenges he faced in rebuilding his life. John also talks about his experience as a foster carer and the importance of education and self-reflection in personal growth. We emphasise the need to be kind to oneself and embrace growth, and offers advice to those questioning their beliefs. Overall, John's story is one of resilience, personal growth, and finding value in trauma. Takeaways Religious upbringing can have a significant impact on mental health and personal growth. Education and self-reflection are powerful tools for personal growth and overcoming trauma. Being kind to oneself and embracing growth are essential for healing and moving forward. Questioning one's beliefs and seeking support can lead to personal transformation and a more fulfilling life.
Looking back at your life, at some of the things that have been difficult or even traumatic, how have those things actually been part of your path to becoming who you needed to become? And how have some of the most difficult things you might have gone through actually been divinely chosen training to create the ‘architecture' of your life, or gain skills you needed to deliver your mission in the world? Betsy thinks out loud while asking these questions and shares how she has come to appreciate how she now appreciates her own Fundamentalist Christian upbringing for the spiritual practices and discipline it provided. Because those are the practices that helped her to become who she now is. Give yourself space and a bit of time to dive inside and apply the questions Betsy asks to your own life and background, then feel free to get in touch! Many young people raised within the restrictive discipline of a strict, Christian evangelical childhood are pulling away from that narrow and dogmatic framework as adults and finding comfort and guidance in a podcasting community of fellow travelers who are walking a similar path. Among these bold podcasters are two former church leaders who are now critical voices in a campaign against Christian Nationalism and for a free and fair pluralistic democracy.Scholar, author, coach and co-host of Straight White American Jesus, Brad Onishi joins us along with musician, author and host of Chapel Probation, Scott Okamoto. In Brad's new book, Preparing for War, he offers brilliant insights into our history and legacy of colonialism, racism and white supremacy and how our untreated wounds continue to fester and infect our political landscape. Bigotry and prejudice are even more insidiously dangerous when they come holding a cross, wrapped in a flag.Brad's podcast with Dan Miller is Straight White American Jesus in which the two university professors examine and discuss the intersection of the religious right and politics in America.Scott's focus is on Evangelical colleges. He taught for 16 years at Azusa Pacific University and become increasingly disillusioned by the subpar academic standards in support of white supremacy. His book, Asian American Apostate recounts his struggle to break free of a value system that encourages White Christian cultural power and to, instead, embrace his own Japanese heritage.Scott's podcast, Chapel Probation features conversations with fellow evangelical college graduates with horrifying stories to share about life on the inside and their escapes from racist, sexist and unforgiving indoctrination. We talk in-depth about the problematic curricula at Fundamentalist Christian colleges, homeschooling and private religious education. We explore the meaning of deconstruction and decolonization as the terms apply to those departing from Christian backgrounds, the Seven Mountains mandate, the new Apostolic Reformation, the ascension of Mike Johnson, purity culture, why the right loves Trump and Putin & much more.Plus, Fritz and Weezy are recommending The Holdovers and Rustin.Path Points of Interest:Brad OnishiStraight White American JesusStraight White American Jesus on FacebookStraight White American Jesus on TwitterPreparing for War: The Extremist History of White Christian Nationalism - And What Comes Next by Brad OnishiScott OkamotoAsian American Apostate by Scott OkamotoChapel Probation PodcastScott Okamoto on InstagramScott Okamoto on Twitter/XThe HoldoversRustin - NetflixMama's Boy - Dustin Lance Black Documentary

This week we welcome Christina Carlson, an embodiment and energetic coach, speaker, teacher, and the host of the podcast, “Bitches, Witches & Queers." Christina and I talk about her experience of being raised as an Evangelical Fundamentalist Christian, leaving the church, and how dance helped free not only her body but her mind. Eventually, Christina discovers another church, and falls in love, but over time signals in her body help her to recognize that the church environment is not for her. We also talk about how this paved the way for what she currently does, working as an embodiment and energetic coach, and the ways she employs practical spirituality in all that she does especially her work. Christina ends this incredible conversation with an exercise that eases us into the practice of observing ourselves and staying inside our bodies.

Love Truce? Donate to help Chris make the show! So far this season I've covered William Jennings Bryan, a man who enjoyed the nickname "Mr. Fundamentalist". But he wasn't really a fundamentalist. Experts point to another man as the true face of fundamentalism. That man was William Bell Riley. He was a famous preacher in his day, bouncing around the midwest until he settled in Minnesota. He founded the Northwestern schools to spread his vision of Christianity and picked debates with modernists at the University of Chicago. He formed the World's Christian Fundamentals Association to help deliver denominations from modernism. But... he lost. A bunch. In this episode we explore the life of William Bell Riley to discover why he and the fundamentalists burned brightly, only to fizzle out a few years later. I met Sherika Tenaya at ISTA and our conversations blew me wide open. Sherika is a member of the Southern Sierra Miwuk Nation, from the Ahwahneechee Kootzaduka'a clan, the original First Nations people of what is now colonially referred to as Yosemite National Park. It's a huge privilege to have Sherika on the podcast to share what she and her ancestors have faced as indigenous people. She describes what it was like growing up in a fundamentalist Christian family in Idaho, discovering her sexuality as a queer woman. She talks about identity, religion, sexual expression and familial relationships with captivating passion and insight. Raising important questions about how religious belief systems impact the LGBTQ community and the challenges faced by indigenous people. Sherika shares heartbreaking histories and uncomfortable truths about the experiences of First Nations people, whilst inviting us all to explore our personal relationship with having and being ‘enough'.BioSherika is the 4x great-granddaughter of Chief Tenaya, the final leader of her people before assimilation. As most Native people are, she was raised in a very strict fundamentalist Christian upbringing, a skin that she shed completely in her teens. As a queer woman, she has spent her life reclaiming her spiritual and sexual liberation and has a deeply held passion for helping others do the same. Today she is training to become a Certified Somatic Sex Educator and Sexological Bodyworker and holds her practice in Boise, Idaho, where she is known for hosting one-of-a-kind workshops that celebrate the diverse expression of human sexuality in safe-enough containers. Growing up in rural Texas within a Fundamentalist Christian family, Allison always felt like something was missing, like an outsider looking in to a world that she didn't belong. In her teens, she was introduced to pasture parties, heavy drinking and drugs, and a community of counter-cultural thinkers who helped her to recognize that her sexuality, politics, and spiritual views weren't in alignment with her upbringing. As those views solidified she traded her family and religion, for a polyamorous couple in the pursuit of all things hedonistic. By age 19, Allison was drinking alcoholically and was addicted to heroin. Getaways to jails and psyche wards were becoming routine.A string of failed suicide attempts at the age of 22 finally led her to the willingness to seek recovery in Arizona among a motley crew of broken, yet beautiful young adults. It was there that she started her journey of recovery and forged friendships that would continue for a lifetime. Through AA stepwork and meetings, she was able to make amends to her family and build a relationship based upon honesty and authenticity. In the early 2000s, she decided to pursue a nursing degree despite the hurdles of a colorful criminal record that strongly suggested she was unqualified, untrustworthy, and unethical. Despite the inner voice that whispered she wasn't capable and with the support of her family and AA community, she walked through those fears in order to become a nurse. Her experience has allowed her to approach addicted patients with empathy and even with all the challenges of her high stress environment, she's been able to remain sober for 18 years.Episode ResourcesConnect with The Courage to ChangePodcast Website | lionrock.life/couragetochangepodcastPodcast Instagram | @couragetochange_podcastYouTube | The Courage to Change PodcastTikTok | @ashleyloebblassingamePodcast Email | podcast@lionrock.lifePodcast Facebook | @thecouragetochangepodcastLionrock ResourcesLionrock Life Mobile App | lionrock.life/mobile-appSupport Group Meeting Schedule | lionrock.life/meetings

In this episode we dip back into our Dungeons and Dragons discussion and bring it to a conclusion but not before doubling down on the delusional deluge of disinformation. If you think the dishonest disreputable deriders of Dungeons and Dragons disgraced themselves in the last episode then dig in for a downpour of disturbed deceptive ding bats. We'll delve into the deranged world of Fundamentalist Christian comic book creator Jack Chick. The most published comic book author in the world, whom you've never heard of. A man into all kinds of conspiracy theories. He is most obsessed with the Catholic Church claiming they keep the name of every Protestant in the world on file with the intention of carrying out another inquisition one day. He also attacks the Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses, Muslims and of course it goes without saying, Freemasons. We'll return to Virginia, the spiritual home of Dungeons & Dragons hysteria and hear from Winston Mathews who sought the Republican nomination for attorney general in the state of Virginia. He proudly announced he was campaigning on just on 2 issues, maintaining the death penalty and abolishing Dungeons & Dragons, claiming it contained, ‘devil worship, Satanism and pornography.'We'll investigate the links between Capital Punishment and DnD you weren't even aware of. Like Oklahoma teenager Sean Sellers who shot a convenience store clerk, Robert Paul Bower then 6 months later shot dead his mother and stepfather, Vonda and Lee Bellofatto while they slept in their bed. Throughout the lengthy trial and appeals process Sellers had claimed to have been a practising Satanist and possessed by a demon. He claimed DnD manuals helped him convert others to Satanism. What Moral Panic would be complete without Geraldo Rivera and we'll look at his 2 part series for Entertainment Tonight in 1987. Pastor George Grant makes a return with co-author Peter Leithart expressing their deepest fears about imagination and their claims Jesus is a character in the game.Homophobic radio host and author Texe Marrs who believes the world is flat, Judaism and Catholicism are Satanism, the Clintons and Newt Gingrich are Marxists and Barbie Doll is Goddess of the Sun among many other things makes an appearance.Pastor Win Worley who claims the Star of David, Karate, tattoos and piercings are all occult spirits, paraphrases Exodus in his attack on the game. But it is alleged former Satanist Bill Schnoebelen who steals the show with his claims of being a vampire. And when I say vampire I mean an actual vampire. Fangs, unable to walk around in the daytime and drinking blood. He really claims this. He also claims he has had sex with a fallen angel! We discover the people most afraid of a Table Top Fantasy Role Play Game are the very people whose grip on reality is the weakest.DnD gets wrapped up in the Satanic Panic along with other pure fantasy like Michelle Remembers and The Satan Seller by an overly superstitious market, ready and waiting to be thrilled and terrified by tales of Demons and evil cabals. And this fear didn't all end in the 80s. In the 21st century the game has been targeted by a Spiritual Warfare Network Regional Coordinator, Diane Buker, televangelist Pat Robertson and author Gary North who predicted Y2K was going to destroy western civilization would like to see the U.S. become a Handmaid's Tale styled theocracy. And also wants offenses like blasphemy and homosexuality to be punishable by death. And when I say death, Gary advocates the method of execution be a good old public stoning.

John McKee evaluates some of the notable features of the Jewish worldview, Protestant worldview, and Fundamentalist Christian worldview. How do each of them customarily approach the issues of the day? How have they each affected, or not affected, the worldview of today's Messianic community?
In this episode Nathan and I continue our conversation and expand our topics to cover world views. We also dive into morality and ethics and things get a little testy. Enjoy!

Clint Heacock was raised in a Fundamentalist Christian group. As a young man he studied theology and Bible studies in various academic settings and completed his PHD in 2011 with his dissertation being a rhetorical-critical study of the book of Ezekiel. He is a former pastor of an Evangelical church and served in full time ministry. He moved to the UK and started a podcast called 'The Preacher's Forum'. Already deconstructing his fundamentalist beliefs he found during the podcast that he was questioning everything. He changed the name of the podcast to MindShift and now explores christian deconstruction, religious trauma and dominion theology. We talked to him about his story and about his research into Dominion Theology and what it means for politics in the US and beyond. In This Episode: We talk about the setups and social programming we have around marriage that make it difficult for things to last forever. Our partner shouldn't be our better half, we should both be whole. Karine encourages people to not expect their partner to fulfill them, this informs a lot of the other things that can go wrong in your relationships. We talk about how we are taught that jealousy equals love, but that belief can be toxic. Karine shares about growing up in a fundamentalist Christian background and how it impacted her view of sexuality and relationships. We talk about sex positivity and how Karine found the conversations on Playboy radio as an introduction to a new way of thinking. We talk about the objectification of women on the Playboy channel versus the sex-positivity message. We talk about how Karine creates experiences for couples like her VIP couples fantasy weekend. Karine defines ethical non-monogamy for us and explains that it is on a spectrum with swingers on one side and polyamory people on the other. She has a 1:1 Coaching Program which uses her Breaking F-R-E-E Method where she helps you break free from the boxes that keep us stuck. She helps you to:Fantasize about who you want to be,Release the blocks that are holding you back,Embrace who you are with tender love and care, andEmpower you to live authentically! Dan & Nick from the 802 podcast met a few years back at a house party and instantly became firm friends. Dan is from Norfolk but now lives in London & Nick grew up in the warmer climes of Trinidad but now lives in Manchester. Their 802 podcast was born out of their friendship and the fun they have together but now has grown to include guests. It’s so important that there is much more representation for people of colour in the gay media so I’m especially happy to have them both on my podcast. The interview was recorded remotely of course, I’m still working from my very small makeshift studio in my wardrobe at home. I chatted with Dan about; why race was more of an issue for him than his sexuality growing up in Norfolk, why homophobic abuse went over his head, how he became a fundamentalist Christian in his early teens (yep that is what I just said), why his church’s lack of acceptance ultimately forced him to leave and lots of other things. And I chatted with Nick about; what it was like growing up in Trinidad where homosexuality was illegal until recently, going to secret underground gay parties there when he was a teenager, what happened when his Dad discovered he had rented a gay movie from Blockbuster, the traumatic experience of his first boyfriend outing him to his parents as a teenager, his crush on Dua Lipa’s Dad and lots of other things. “Love is a verb” - Howie Howie writes Carole: 19 Jan 2003 21:01:50 -0500 We are having a little going away party next door tomorrow at 6pm for Kit and Jeff who you'll recall are moving to Hawaii. Would love to have you join us if you can. In Orlando Tuesday afternoon and evening. The rest of my week is wide open right now - have a bunch of stuff to do but no set schedule. Would enjoy seeing you as often as you would like this week for whatever activity you like - walk Bayshore, see or rent a movie, meal(s), read, day or evening, your place or mine. Am simply at your service. You name it. You know you're getting old when you have no clue who the half time performers are at the football games, and are not sure what you are hearing is music. Carole writes Howie At 07:45 PM 1/19/03 -0500: Tuesday night at 6PM I host the Spay and Neuter meeting at the island. Wednesdays at 7:00-8:00 or 7:30-8:30 depending on where I go, I have church. Saturday my period is due to start and I have the No More Homeless Pets thing at the University from 9:30 till 2:00 and just for future reference, I have church on Sundays from 9:00 - 10:00 class and 10:00-11:00 worship and in the afternoon either from 5-6 or 6-7 depending on which congregation I attend. Howie writes Carole: 19 Jan 2003 22:15:31 -0500 Well, if I'm to pick, we've got Monday evening set (nothing to bring - all taken care of) and Tuesday we're both busy. Since you are busy Wednesday in evening with church, would you like to do your roller blading that afternoon and come by for a shower, visit and early dinner before church? And from there we could plan the remaining days before your discomfort time? I'm happy to try this laser thing for you as long as you are sure I can do no harm if I do not do something right. Will check the laser site tomorrow but perhaps when we visit you can tell me more. Planning to have Dr. Dong look at leg Tuesday. I'll see if I can "remote view" into those dreams. Carole writes Howie At 09:44 PM 1/19/03 -0500: Dear Howie, I would be happy to meet with you and Kit and Jeff Monday at 6PM. What should I bring? Thank you for the info on Dr. Yang. I have laser acupuncture that I wish to try, but would like to know what you think of her if you go. I can reach all of the spots that need doing, I think, and I have done regular acupuncture enough to have a good feel for it. If I can't relax and hold the laser in place, would you be willing to do it for me? It is just light, so you can't do any harm. I bought it for the cats, but there is a book for people too. If the laser doesn't work, I will be wanting to see her next month. If I am ever going to do anything but embarrass you with my ineptitude on the court, I will need your best reference and lots of practice. Jamie is very athletic and hates to skate, so she can help bring me up to speed for you. I used to play when I was a teenager. My father had a powerful swing. The ball would cut you in half if it made contact. I am good at chasing cats, in ever changing directions, while swinging those big wrought iron nets that you can catch a cougar in. How hard could this be? ;-) I am sorry to hear that you are expecting a long recovery on your calf, but not too surprised given your description of the incident. Want to try the laser? McLaren Photonic Therapy ® (405) 767-0800 http://www.photonictherapy.com/ As for the rest of the week, I would like to make the most of it, since I will be likely not be good company for a week starting Saturday. I love blading Bay Shore and could drop by before (less smelly, sweaty and "high") or afterward when I am already euphoric and on top of the world. I ALWAYS enjoy a walk, but don't want to aggravate your leg. I spend an inordinate amount of time eating so any time that works into your schedule I am much happier to have your company. I don't wish to make a pest of myself. I need to know how you prefer to structure your days, or if you prefer structure to spontaneity. Left to my own devices, I will work from 7:30 am until 9:30 PM and it makes no difference to me what time of day I break free to do something else. I am adaptable. Lately I have spent an awful lot of time in writing, but I do it to sort out my thoughts. Recently I have needed this time to write, more than usual and I am pleased with the clarity that it has helped bring to the situation. Please do not feel compelled to write, just because I go on and on. I am off to bed. With any luck, I will dream of you. Carole writes Howie At 08:49 PM 1/19/03 -0500: Dear Howie, When I said we are studying Christian Evidences and alluded to scientific evidence of the existence of God and the Bible being His inspired Word, I did not wish to leave the impression that the evidence is so indisputable that one could come to no other conclusion. Far from it. What I have learned is that regardless of one's beliefs, from Atheism to Fundamentalist Christian, nothing about the origin of man, our reason for being here and where we go when we die, can be proven beyond a doubt. When a man says, "There is no God" or "We are all god" he is stating his belief, his faith and in the end our faith is all that any of us have. I find the evidence of God to be as compelling as the evidence against it so the only issue, in my mind is, "Which is the safest bet?" If there is no God and I live my life as if there were, there is no down side for me. I will have lived a good life and treated others the way I wanted to be treated. I will have spent three hours a week studying something that led me to be kinder, more compassionate and helped others to realize meaning in their lives. On the other hand, if I bet there is no God and do not spend any time looking into the matter, then I am more apt to be guided by man's changing attitudes and values and it takes a considerable amount of meaning from my existence. If the Bible is God's Word, and I choose to ignore it, the repercussions of eternal separation from all that is good is a greater price than I wish to pay for a few extra hours in this life time. I have witnessed great blessings and a closeness to God that causes me to have much greater faith than the last two paragraphs would seem to indicate, but I came to those conclusions when I was far less convinced. I recently read the Nag Hamadi Library because it was a collection of writing by the Essenes who were walking the earth in the days of Christ. I am still reading the Dead Sea Scrolls and have been fascinated to learn that as recently as 1942 ancient scrolls were found that evidenced the fact that the Old Testament had been meticulously copied without changes for thousands of years. That seems nothing short of miraculous to me. There are no such documents that evidence the accuracy of the New Testament's first 150 years, but there is also nothing in the NT that contradicts the OT. I am not a member of either church that I attend, because I live a life that is not condoned by the Bible. Even when I was married, I did not ask to be affiliated with the church because we do not believe in divorce for any reason other than infidelity and my husband was the unfaithful one in his previous marriage, so our marriage would never have been approved. For the past three years, I have been with men who were not my husband and who would not have been approved marriage partners according to the Scriptures. I do not wish to be an embarrassment to those members who are doing God's Will, because for me to ask to be a member would be to put them in the untenable position of either having to deny me or defend me. Everyone in both congregations and several others, loves me and is so kind to me. I would never want to put them in that awkward position. The Bible doesn't require me to "be a member" of a local church, but it does state that I am to come to worship whenever the group meets, so I do. I will never be perfect, but I really only have one big temptation and that is my sexual need. The Bible tells us that we do need a mate to make our lives complete in this regard, so it is not as if sex were bad, but rather the situations in which we satisfy those needs. I would feel I was doing all that was asked of me if I could just forego that one desire or if I could fulfill it within the context approved by God. For a woman my age, that is not likely to happen. This leads me to something you brought up a couple of times. You have teased me, as you did today, that I should make the most of your youth and virility while it is still yours to share. You seemed concerned as I was leaving that I did not recognize the fullness of this relationship for what it is and that perhaps I was limiting it to a sexual attraction. I'm not sure if you thought that I was doing that, or if you wanted to be sure I knew that you were not, but either way, there seemed to be an issue of sorts. The lovemaking with you today was the most wonderful I have ever experienced. I am still glowing. As I said earlier, I was seeing you through different eyes and was much more appreciative of what I saw and felt. I wouldn't choose someone based physical attraction alone. Today, when I mentioned the body builder, what I didn't say was that he holds 7 titles, one of which was Mr. America within the past 10 years and he still competes and wins regularly. He takes testosterone injections and HGH and was pushing me to do the same, just so I could keep up with him sexually. He owns thousands of acres of groves in the area and wanted to help me with the land issues I face for the cats. He's been crazy about me for the past 5 years although I only started sleeping with him in November. His wife died 14 years ago and all he has talked about is that I am the only woman he has wanted to be with since then. I just broke up with him last week, without a tear and without a single thought that I may have made a mistake. Beauty, sexuality, and financial resources are all nice, but they are not the most important attributes a person can have. For me, the most attractive part of any person is their attitude and their heart. How is that person making the world a little bit better place? Of course I am attracted to your physical beauty and your sensuality, but I am only beginning to see what a lovely person you are on the inside. The more I learn about you, the more I want to know. I am enjoying every minute!!! - Carole Howie writes Carole: 19 Jan 2003 22:04:35 -0500 I think your philosophy is wonderful. I am convinced there is a spiritual force in the universe that we are part of, whether we call it "God" or not, and that one of your sentences captures the most important thing this force would ask of us: "I will have lived a good life and treated others the way I wanted to be treated." I disagree with your Church on sex. I think our sexual desire is a blessing from God that allows us a way bond with another soul despite the fact that our souls are stuck in separate bodies. But, most people cannot use this gift responsibly and before birth control there was a powerful social reason (unwanted children) that made the rules very valuable. Maybe the church would say they agree, but only if married and approved by the church, so maybe all I disagree with is the latter. But while I disagree with the views of your church on this, I heartily agree that we should respect each person's right to adopt the beliefs that come to him or her and that hopefully serve them well. I'm just sorry it seems to make you feel bad to a degree about something I think is so good. If believing makes someone treat other people better, then I'm for that belief. Unfortunately I have found that some of the people who are most active in professing their religion are the most intolerant and behave toward others very poorly. I think we already mentioned one or both of the two Covey quotes that I love, but they both come to mind. I may not have them exact: "Love is a verb" "We should not think of ourselves as humans having a spiritual experience. We should think of ourselves as spirits having a human experience." My favorite all time pin button (not sure what you call them - the kind with words on them that you can pin on your shirt) is in my office. It says: "God is coming......and She is pissed!" My comment about sex being the "least reason" was to let you know how I feel. This is not in any way to diminish the wonderment of the sexual part. I believe the reason the sex is so good is because of other things we are feeling. I think we share something that is the single most important thing to me, and very rare: values. It is harder for me to express certain things than I think it is for you. I can say them to myself, but saying or writing them to you feels like I am being "mushy". (Sorry - I had to delete the following two sentences. Another time. Not trying to be cute or coy.) Someday, if it would not be a problem, I would enjoy attending one of the sermon's and/or classes. But if my presence would in any way be awkward or unwelcome, just say so. Your friend only won those Mr. America titles because I chose not to compete. I'm concerned that you may go to sleep so mellow tonight that you will not hear your alarm and miss some appointment tomorrow. Should I knock on your door at the time you want to get up to be sure? :-) (you are probably already asleep and won't read this until morning - see what you missed by turning in early?!) Let me know if you want to join us tomorrow evening (per other email re calendar). For the Minutes. - Howie
Tim is originally from Seattle, Washington, where he was raised in poverty in the very conservative and extremist Independent Fundamental Baptist sect of protestant Christianity. Due to the fundamentalist sect he had no formal education at all, and was almost entirely self-taught. He left home and the religion at the age of 17, and worked to educate himself, and obtained his GED secondary school qualifications, joined the Navy and later obtained his BA in International Affairs and Political Science. He lived for about ten years in Japan, and learned Japanese as well, and is currently in the American Midwest.
Christine Ann Olivas Former homeschooled Fundamentalist. Marketer. Comic, storyteller, writer. Creator: 7 shows. Founder: @offmiccomedyschool From her Fundamentalist Christian, homeschooled upbringing to her liberal arts education in California, Christine's life has been a study in extremes. But whether we're talking organized religion or modern media, Christine insists on asking provocative, important questions about the ideas and practices we take for granted. Especially if they negatively affect women, body image, and sex. Christine started her arts journey as a fiction writer, with short stories focused on on the intersection of gender, sex, and technology. She gives us complex female characters that are both longing for more and self-isolating in a world that doesn't seem to understand them or want them to exist. Her short fiction has been published in Vol. 1 Brooklyn, Paper Darts, Breakwater Review, Alternating Current, Aptly, and on Catapult Community. She is also currently working on a full-length book about her life that will combine personal essay and memoir. When Christine relocated to Philly in 2018, she began studying and performing two new art forms: first-person storytelling and standup comedy. Since then, she has performed on local comedy/storytelling shows (Tell Me a Story, Comedy Incarnate, Story Hole, and Pass the Mic, to name a few) and at established venues in Philly (Punchline, Good Good Comedy Theatre, Philly Improv Theater), Tempe, Las Vegas, and NYC (Greenwich Village Comedy Club, Broadway Comedy Club). Christine is also a talented, visionary show producer in her own right, creating and hosting comedy shows that equally benefit performers and venues — while thoroughly engaging audiences. After creating Jenkintown's first comedy showcase, she now hosts “The Afternoon After,” Philly's first and only daytime open mic. She is also the brain behind and co-producer of “No Mo' Sexual FOMO,” a monthly experience combining standup and sex education. Since the pandemic began, Christine has quickly pivoted to taking standup comedy online. Already, she has produced and hosted a recurring virtual roast battle called Doomsday, two editions of Fools for Good (which benefits Philly venues, performers and non-profits), and is working on a virtual edition of No Mo' Sexual FOMO. We all need to remember to never be ashamed of our anxiety or trauma, but instead talk it through and dance it out! My radiant guest, ChelseaHorton, is a former fundamentalist Christian turned pole dancer. She is married to an incredibly loving and goofy agnostic, Matt, who gives her all the cuddles and laughter. Chelsea graduated from a private bible college in Florida in 2013 with a degree in counseling and went on a painful and enlightening journey that led her to pursue her Master's degree in Dance/Movement Therapy and Counseling at Columbia College Chicago. It was through this program that she began to understand that her mind and her beliefs were her prison, holding her back from love and living authentically. She learned to intimately connect with the wisdom of her own body and finally felt free to choose the life and love she truly wanted. After receiving her degree, she went on to work in a psychiatric hospital, where she helped hundreds of others learn how to get out of their minds and into their bodies. This was the pathway to healing anxiety in herself and SO many others that she worked with. Chelsea now has her own embodiment coaching business where she helps women who experience relationship anxiety and OCD to stop doubting their love for their partners so that they can embrace love, commitment, joy, and pleasure! Today’s show covers topics like: what embodiment actually is feeling freedom within the container of a relationship what are signs of relationship anxiety why anxiety manifests in good relationships why we are afraid to feel happiness how to know if it's your intuition to leave or just relationship anxiety unhealthy codependency vs. healthy interdependency feeling valid disconnection vs. fear and past beliefs surrounding “the one” feeling a "yes" and "no" in our bodies how we can heal our bodies to feel and not fear love the miraculous nervous system and mind body spirit connection celebrating the body's ancient wisdom through pole dancing releasing expectation and fear to find your authentic self dating someone of a different faith or no faith It's time to set yourself FREE, Lovely One! On this episode, we speak with Jordan, a cis-gendered bisexual man who identifies as an intersectional feminist, anti-racist and pro-LGBTQAI. He grew up in Dallas, Texas as the second child out of 8 in a conservative Christian home who followed the teachings of the Institute in Basic Life Principles, established by Bill Gothard (a ministry that was popular with the TLC Duggar Family of 19 Kids and Counting). As a child, Jordan grew up isolated from his community, homeschooled by his parents and often called upon to take an active role in caring for his younger siblings. Ever since he was introduced to a computer when he was ten, Jordan has been fascinated with coding and not only taught himself how to code, but also has made a career out of it ever since. At 32, Jordan left home to move to NYC and pursue a career as a programmer, leaving his family and siblings behind. His journey over the past several decades since then has taken him to the likes of raves, Burning Man, Costa Rica, and finally home to himself.. By connecting with the range of people and places in his travels, Jordan has opened his eyes to the abuse and oppression he experienced as a child, by his parents and by his church, and reinforced by the patriarchal norms that shape all of us in this society. Jordan is here with us today to share his story of survival and transformation. --- Thanks for tuning in to the en(gender)ed podcast! Abortion in the United States continues to spark fierce debate and cause division, ever since the Supreme Court made it legal in 1973 following the Roe v Wade case. Individual states still have a lot of power to influence the availability of abortions and in almost every state there are campaigns and protests for and against. In our two-part podcast we hear from people on either side of the debate. For part one we speak to Dr Willie Parker, who was raised in a fundamentalist Christian family in Alabama. He now exclusively provides abortion services to women in his home state and neighbouring Georgia, both of which have more restrictive laws on abortion. (Photo: Dr Willie Parker.
