I Guess I'll Do It with Pat House

One of my first friends in comedy, Chip Chantry, joins me on this episode. Chip and I have a lot of similarities between our childhoods, comedy interests, and our careers. We chat about his very first time doing stand-up (opening for his brother's band), our early days in the Philly scene, how Philly comedy has evolved and we each work on a new bit. We also talk about the television masterpiece, Strangers With Candy, because half of our conversations are about that show anyways. Pat House is a nationally-touring comedian based out of Philadelphia. A regular performer in comedy clubs, casinos, and theaters all over the country, Pat has been a choice opener for Sebastian Maniscalco, Tom Segura, and Dan Cummins. He recorded his first album Biggest Thing in 2013, and his latest album Heard Enough Yesterday, hit #1 on the iTunes comedy charts. Both can be heard on iTunes, Amazon, and Pandora.Chip Chantry is a stand-up comedian and television writer. He has written for Crazy Talk, a comedy/talk series for NBC Universal and the syndicated series Whacked Out Sports. He most recently wrote on the NatGeo series Howie Mandel's Animals Doing Things. Chip was the winner of 2013's Philly's Phunniest Contest at Helium Comedy Club, where he was a regular performer. Chip also won the “Funniest Comedian” award in Philadelphia's annual Comedy Awards in both 2012 and 2014 and was named Best Comedian 2018 by Philadelphia Magazine. Chip is a recurring guest on the Doug Loves Movies and Todd Glass Show Podcasts.Formerly a 4th-grade teacher, Chip left the classroom to pursue comedy and writing. He has opened for national headliners such as Dave Chappelle, Bob Saget, and Tig Notaro. In 2012, he released his first live comedy album, ACROSS FROM THE ADONIS. His second album, SWINGERS PARTY, was released in March 2019, where it spent time at #1 on the iTunes comedy charts and is currently in rotation on SiriusXM. Chip has written and performed in a number of live and video sketches, including “Deck the Hall and Oates” which VH1.com called “one of the best parodies of the year” in 2011. He also wrote and produced the monthly late night style talk shows FACE TIME w/ CHIP CHANTRY, and GOOD EVENING w/ CHIP CHANTRY at Helium Comedy Club, as well as the monthly comedy-variety program, CHIP CHANTRY'S ONE‐MAN SHOW (w/ special guests!), at the Philly Improv Theater. He also hosted and co-produced LECTURE HALL, an educational comedy variety show, with a middle-school assembly format. Most recently, he has partnered with his brother Adam, a planetarium director, to produce The Funny Thing About the Sky, a comedic, multi-media astronomy presentation. Thank You! A lot of amazing people and places made the Full Belly Laughs Podcast possible, and also just made Brian Durkin a better comedian and person. Thank You, Creators Rob Zawatski, Dena Miranda, and Steve from Bridgeset Sound really helped shape the show you heard every week. Steve helped equip Brian with his current podcast gear, to make the show sound great. Dena Miranda laid down the vocals for the opening theme, and Rob helped produce and record that theme. Rob also encouraged Brian to check out podcasting, and without that nudge, none of this stuff would have happened. Thank you to Steve, Dena, and Rob. Thank You, Guests So many guests over the years made the Full Belly Laughs Podcast something special, but a few people really made the show awesome. Thank you to Megan Goetz, Ben Farrell, Joe Messina, Max Barth, Christian Mangual, and Greg Trout for their contributions to the podcast. These reoccurring guests helped shape the tone of the show, and these people really helped out Brian when another guest would cancel. They were always excited to do the podcast, and Brian is so grateful for their talent and time. Thank you to Meg, Ben, Joe, Max, Christian, and Greg. Thank You, Entities There are two venues/events that really allowed the FBL Podcast and Brian to grow. Than you to the Philly Improv Theater and the Philadelphia Podcast Festival. Without the experience of performing live at these theaters and events, the show would not be as good; Brian also grew faster as a comedian and performer thanks to these opportunities. Thank you, PHIT and PPF. Thank You, Friends and Fam There are a few people close to Brian that really supported the podcast. Special thank you to Alex Colic and Richard Chin for being supportive friends. They helped build up engagement on social media, attended live shows, and even guested on the podcast. Special thank you to Hugh Durkin (Brian's dad). He's been a big supporter of Brian's creative endeavors, and it means a lot. Finally, the closing thank you goes to Lauren Daniels. She is the #1 fan of Full Belly Laughs, inspiring Brian to always make the show entertaining. She has also encouraged Brian on his development, and she continues to be a beacon of light for his spiritual and personal growth. Thank you Alex and Rich. Thank you, Dad. Thank you, Lauren. Thank You, Fans It means so much that you took the time to check out and listen to the Full Belly Laughs Podcast. Hopefully you will enjoy the YouTube videos and the live stream on Twitch. Brian looks forward to seeing you in the comments and live chat. Brian Durkin is on Twitter and Instagram. Full Belly Laughs is on Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest. Merch available at gachiGASM.com. Christine Ann Olivas Former homeschooled Fundamentalist. Marketer. Comic, storyteller, writer. Creator: 7 shows. Founder: @offmiccomedyschool From her Fundamentalist Christian, homeschooled upbringing to her liberal arts education in California, Christine's life has been a study in extremes. But whether we're talking organized religion or modern media, Christine insists on asking provocative, important questions about the ideas and practices we take for granted. Especially if they negatively affect women, body image, and sex. Christine started her arts journey as a fiction writer, with short stories focused on on the intersection of gender, sex, and technology. She gives us complex female characters that are both longing for more and self-isolating in a world that doesn't seem to understand them or want them to exist. Her short fiction has been published in Vol. 1 Brooklyn, Paper Darts, Breakwater Review, Alternating Current, Aptly, and on Catapult Community. She is also currently working on a full-length book about her life that will combine personal essay and memoir. When Christine relocated to Philly in 2018, she began studying and performing two new art forms: first-person storytelling and standup comedy. Since then, she has performed on local comedy/storytelling shows (Tell Me a Story, Comedy Incarnate, Story Hole, and Pass the Mic, to name a few) and at established venues in Philly (Punchline, Good Good Comedy Theatre, Philly Improv Theater), Tempe, Las Vegas, and NYC (Greenwich Village Comedy Club, Broadway Comedy Club). Christine is also a talented, visionary show producer in her own right, creating and hosting comedy shows that equally benefit performers and venues — while thoroughly engaging audiences. After creating Jenkintown's first comedy showcase, she now hosts “The Afternoon After,” Philly's first and only daytime open mic. She is also the brain behind and co-producer of “No Mo' Sexual FOMO,” a monthly experience combining standup and sex education. Since the pandemic began, Christine has quickly pivoted to taking standup comedy online. Already, she has produced and hosted a recurring virtual roast battle called Doomsday, two editions of Fools for Good (which benefits Philly venues, performers and non-profits), and is working on a virtual edition of No Mo' Sexual FOMO. It's Tuesday and... Rob Alesiani is our guest! Rob Alesaini began improvising in 2006 taking classes at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater in New York. Soon after, he choose he chose to become a corporate cog for a while. Fear not, though, because upon throwing off the shackles of corporate life, he returned to the improv world in 2013 when he moved back to his home, Philadelphia. He's been improvising like his life depended upon it since. He was a member of Philly Improv Theater house team Outside Voices for 2 and a half years. He is one of the hosts of popular live late night talk show Two Late with Rob and Joe, along with his best friend and fellow comedian Joe Tuzzi. He is currently a writer and performer on The Worst Generation, PHIT's very first digital sketch house team. He has been coaching independent improv teams since the Spring of 2014, and was recently added as a faculty member of Philly Improv Theaters Training Center. He has completed both the Summer and Advanced Intensive Training Programs at iO Theater in Chicago. He currently works as a corporate communications consultant for The Delaware River Port Authority, where he uses the tennants of long-form improvisation to help their management team improve internal communication practices. He has a cat who is constantly plotting against him. He is too verbose.

Matt has performed and taught at various national improv festivals like the Del Close Marathon, the Boston Improv festival, and the Chicago Improv Festival. Jason and Matt talk about Matt's renowned improv show, "Matt &," where Matt picks an audience member up to do a two-person show with. Aside from talking at length about that show, they chat about instruction and the basics of performing improv. Does it feel like something is missing from your city? Maybe a tech or creative community. Maybe an entrepreneurial community. Before he founded Philly Improv Theater, Greg Maughan felt that Philly lacked a comedy community. So he set out to create one.In this funny, insightful interview, fellow comic and Indy Hall team member Sam Abrams talks with Greg about how the theater - and the community it comprises - were built and have grown and evolved over the years. There's SO much to learn in this interview for brand new and veteran coworking spaces alike.Notable Quotes"Recognizing things are happening...figure out why..." [11:08]"I don't want to be a gatekeeper for comedy in the city of Philadelphia...I don't know whats funny. I know what's funny to me, but just because I don't think something's funny it doesn't mean that a huge crowd of people aren't going to disagree with me." [17:54]"The other thing they don't tell you about growth is...going from 50 members to 100 is not a doubling...it's an exponential increase in relationships." This episode is the first one that I didn't produce myself, so say hello to my new producer Mike Mehalick.
