While the original didn’t garner much fanfare over 10 years ago, the success of Nier Automata had people excited about Nier Replicant. And, by all accounts, the general public has enjoyed it much more this time around than they did back in 2010.   Thank god for the update of the old game, because we didn’t have tons to discuss for Headlines & Hot Takes on this episode of The Weekspot. However, the announcement of The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles did get Matthew all excited, and rumours have been floating around about a Metal Gear Solid remake, and Colm got to talk to my co-host about his new drum kit, so it’s not like we didn’t have anything to discuss.   But, yes, this was a Show and Tell-heavy episode of the podcast, with Nier Replicant ver.1.22etc taking centre stage. While Matthew isn't quite as hot on it as some others are, he still recognises that this is the definitive edition of a pretty decent video game. The boy of the Castles also continues to be a bit unsure about Resident Evil Village after giving last week’s timed demo a go. Meanwhile, Colm jumped into the RE:Verse beta and had an adequate time; he had much more fun with the sweet and funny Turnip Boy Commits Tax Exasion. And Before Your Eyes is the best narrative-driven, blinky game he's ever played.   This week's Mystery Steam Reviews is all about games that are based on mythology. “Our self-expression is meant to be the manifestation of the silence of our hearts.” Matthew Fox is a pioneering spiritual theologian, author, and perhaps the only man alive who has had this theology systematically singled out and denounced by two successive Popes, only to see a third Pope incorporate it into Church doctrine. His courageous stance on issues like the sacredness of our relationship to the environment, the divine feminine, gay rights, and other controversial issues have sparked a spiritual revolution in the United States and around the world.   Fox is the leading exponent of Creation Spirituality, a more expansive and inclusive perspective on Christian doctrine that brings it closer to the mystical foundations underpinning all religious traditions, and which traces its inspiration back to Catholic visionaries like St Francis of Assisi and Meister Eckhart. His forthcoming book, Julian of Norwich: Wisdom in a Time of Pandemic--and Beyond, is about a medieval mystic woman who lived through the plague of the Black Death, and draws out insights and principles relevant to our modern COVID-19 era. "A theologian way ahead of her time," he writes, "Julian develops a feminist understanding of God as mother at the heart of nature’s goodness." While Matthew’s life has been full of innovation in work, worship, and education, his heart has been anchored firmly in fidelity to service and reconnection, even in the face of opposition and resistance from prevailing Church dogma.  Along the journey, he’s been consistently regarded as one of the most spiritually influential living people, and received numerous awards and accolades, including the Abbey Courage of Conscience Peace Award, whose other recipients include Rosa Parks, Mother Theresa, and The Dalai Lama.  Matthew began his religious training in the Catholic Dominican Order pursuing a Doctorate of Spiritual Theology in Paris at the suggestion of Thomas Merton, the groundbreaking Trappist monk known for his extensive interfaith studies and explorations of mysticism across traditions.  This openness to a diversity of views and emphasis on direct experience perhaps set the stage for the first conflicts with the Catholic Church, when Fox later taught a holistic pedagogy in collaboration with a feminist theologian, a Jungian psychologist, and a physicist.   Some time later, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (future Pope Benedict XVI) had Fox’s work and writings investigated for heresy -- an investigation that turned up empty after examination by a team of Dominican theologians. When Fox questioned the doctrine of “original sin”, Ratzinger banned Fox from teaching for a year. When Fox failed to condemn homosexuality, embraced feminist theology, and worked “too closely” with Native Americans, the conflict culminated in his expulsion from the Dominican order for “disobedience” several years later. Matthew was received into the Episcopal Church where his innovative outreach and instincts for interconnectedness drew inspiration from rave parties as a vehicle to bring liturgy and church worship back into the lives of young people. He created a series of “Cosmic Masses” where he consciously reinvigorated Western ritual through ecstatic and visceral celebration over music and pre-modern dancing. These worship parties continue to this day and have been held in well over a hundred venues, including the Parliament of World Religions, and touched tens of thousands of participants through a spectrum of themes, including “The Black Diaspora”, “Rumi and Sufi Wisdom”, and “Economic Justice” among many others. One of his greatest contributions has been to clarify and amplify the principles of Creation Spirituality, a paradigm shift brought out in his book Original Blessing that upgrades and reformulates prevailing dogma with broad, positive, and inclusive principles.  Fox’s conception draws on a close reading of Biblical sources, early medieval Christian mystics, and modern science, even as it seeks common ground with faiths and spiritual traditions from around the world. Many highly regarded spiritual figures have proclaimed that this work represents a rescue and recovery of a form of spirituality from within the depths of Christian heritage that has profound relevance for our modern times. Matthew is the author of 38 books, including Julian of Norwich: Wisdom in a Time of Pandemic -- and Beyond (forthcoming), Christian Mystics: 365 Readings and Meditations, and the The Physics of Angels: Exploring the Realm Where Science and Spirit Meet.  His books have been translated into 68 languages and sold millions of copies worldwide.  Join Rahul Brown and Aryae Coopersmith in conversation with this powerful voice of faith and conscience.

My friend Matthew Wilkinson shares his journey as a gay Latter-day Saint coming to terms with his sexual orientation as a teenager growing up in England, serving a mission, his kind and loving Mission Presidents (Robert and Pat Preston), coming out to his wonderful parents and family members, graduating from BYU in Geospatial Intelligence, and his desire to be a University Professor. While Matthew has deep admiration for the Church and isn’t trying to pull people out of the Church, he shares why he is stepping away. I believe hearing Matthew’s story helps us come together to better love, support and minster to all of God’s children. Thanks for sharing your story, Matthew. John 1:1-5, 9-14 One of these Gospels is not like the other… While Matthew, Mark, and Luke offer us Advent and Christmas narratives we might recognize, John tells us a Christmas story that is all but impossible to recreate with inflatables in your yard.

In this sermon, Symon looks at John's account of the Christmas story. While Matthew & Luke take us to the cradle and the manger, Mark to the prophesies of old, John takes us back into the mists of eternity to show that Jesus was always there. John writes his gospel so that you will believe that Jesus is the Son of God (Jn 20:31)

The Book of John is unique in its telling of the birth story of Jesus. While Matthew and Luke wrote about Jesus’ birth on earth - John stepped back and described how Jesus, the one who is forever, stepped from infinite space into our little world. The very one who created the universe being born as a vulnerable baby.

The essential truth of Christianity is that the Eternal God was born among us. It's the only truth that can save us from being eternally lost. The Christmas message as recorded by in the Gospel of John is that God was born. While John deals with the supernatural aspect of Christmas, Matthew and Luke speak of all the natural elements of the birth of Christ—the shepherds, the manger, the star, the Magi, Mary and Joseph, and the list goes on. It is critical that we read the Gospel of John to understand exactly just how essential it was that Jesus was born 2,000 years ago. While Matthew and Luke tell us the “what” and the “how” of Jesus' birth, John tells us clearly the “why” of His birth. Were is not for His birth we would have no hope of eternal life and no idea how to live this life.

Matthew's first ever tour abroad in 2015, he tackled the Permian Highway, Kurdistan Region of Iraq for two months. Matthew talks to us about preparations, riding solo, and why he does it, why he rides his bike into adventure. “The old Jerusalem Gospel” reminds us of Luke’s recording of the Great Commission. While Matthew and Mark’s accounts are more well-known, Luke’s connects the message with where it was to begin: the city of Jerusalem. They were to preach two specific things.

This episode of Geek Life Crisis is inspiration for anyone who grew up with a love of comic books and a dream to create them. Matthew was a great guest and we loved hearing about his 5-issue limited series "Amazing Age".  He also created and wrote the popular "Bee Sting" graphic novel, which he later produced into a feature film, with a sequel. (Available on Amazon.) While Matthew sold us on Amazing Age I tried to sell him on the 3-issue limited comic book series I made when I was 10, called "Galactic Defenders" - starring Thunder Thrower, a godlike hero with a hammer. (Can't believe it's 2017 and I'm typing about Thunder Thrower.) This was the part of the interview when Matthew mentioned the new villains he should trademark, "Cease and Desist". Amazing Age 3rd issue is coming out September 13, 2017.  It's not too late to ask your comic shop person to back-order the past two issues. We are in the company of Matthew Wood, author and herbalist of thirty years speaking to us on age-old plant medicine usages, the crucial task of upholding the habitat of plant communities, and much more. Matthew Wood has been a practicing herbalist since 1982. In a period when many authors and lecturers are merely "arm chair herbalists" who offer theories and opinions based on book learning, and others have turned to the exotic traditions of India or China, he has been an active practitioner of traditional Western herbalism. He has helped tens of thousands of clients over the years, with many difficult health problems. While Matthew believes in the virtue of many other healing modalities, he has always been inspired to learn, preserve, and practice the tradition of herbal medicine descending to us from our European, Anglo-American, and Native American heritage. He is a member of the American Herbalists Guild (registered herbalist) and has earned his Masters of Science degree from the Scottish School of Herbal Medicine.

December 12, 2010 - We’ve been talking about the four Gospels on this journey toward Christmas. While Matthew and Mark have more of an emphasis on the divine Jesus, Luke skillfully emphasizes Jesus’ humanity and his compassion for the least of these.
