Al Capone came to the head of the Chicago Outfit at 26 years of age. Now leading the largest organized crime family outside of New York, Al made a fortune by bootlegging in liquor during prohibition. He definitely did all the other mob stuff, Gambling, Sex Work, Racketeering, but booze is where he hit it big. Fighting for control of the lucrative alcohol game spilled onto the streets of Chicago in a way that hadn't and still hasn't been seen. This was a time when you'd be walking down Michigan Avenue and see 4 guys jump out of a car in broad days light and open up with Tommy Guns trying to bump off a rival leader. Bombings were commonplace, and almost the entire law enforcement establishment was on the take, bought and paid for by Capone. Finally the Federal Government has to step in to take him down. How'd they do it?....well you're gonna have to listen to find out. Support the show

Chuck Collins is the Director of the Program on Inequality and the Common Good at the Institute for Policy Studies, where he co-edits Inequality.org. His newest book is “Burned By Billionaires: How Concentrated Wealth and Power Ae Ruining Our Lives and Planet” Inequality is a major problem . Humans daily lives are being disrupted by people with immense power in the areas of health, wellbeing, environment, housing costs, and democracy    The Second Gilded Age and Robber Barons perpetuate the myth of the Trickle-Down Theory.  The middle Class is shrinking, and Project 2025 wants to gut labor unions, eliminate child labor laws, and decimate workplace safety.   Big money robs Americans of their vote and voice. The UN can play a critical role in convening its members to develop standards to limit corruption, money laundering, and offshore banking, along with the G-20 countries moving forward more rapidly with their Global Wealth Tax.

If you underpay your taxes, Jewish law says you're not just breaking the law - you're taking money from your own family and neighbors. This morning we unpack the basic obligation for every Jew to give at least a minimal amount to Tzedakah (charity) to those in need, even if one has to beg or borrow for it. And this command is in the form of a tax. We survey the opinion of Rabbi Herschel Schachter that one who does not fully and accurately pay their taxes, regardless of whether they agree with how the funds are spent, is not only violating secular law (a serious Rabbinic prohibition) but also stealing from their family, friends, and community by requiring them to have to pay larger amounts for the services we all receive. Michael Whitman is the senior rabbi of ADATH Congregation in Hampstead, Quebec, and an adjunct professor at McGill University Faculty of Law. ADATH is a modern orthodox synagogue community in suburban Montreal, providing Judaism for the next generation. We take great pleasure in welcoming everyone with a warm smile, while sharing inspiration through prayer, study, and friendship. Rabbi Whitman shares his thoughts and inspirations through online lectures and shiurim, which are available on: YouTube: / @rabbimichaelwhitman Instagram: / adathmichael Podcast - Mining the Riches of the Parsha: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast... Cross-Border Tax Evasion Is an Old Story, Roman Scroll Reveals

Proof from an ancient Roman scroll: As long as there have been taxes, there has been tax evasion. When researchers studied a previously mislabeled scroll, they discovered detailed attorney notes for a case against taxpayers accused of using forged documents and sham transactions between the Roman provinces of Judaea and Arabia to escape taxes on their assets. The assets in question were enslaved people. The potential punishments included distinctly unmodern measures. Anna Dolganov of the Austrian Academy of Sciencescq talked with reporter Caleb Harshberger about how scholars made the discovery, details of the scheme, and what they're hoping to uncover next as they continue their research. Since the Covid-19 pandemic, cyber scams have surged across the Mekong region. Abandoned casinos and hotels have been turned into “scam compounds” serving as bases for romance scams, fake call centres, Ponzi schemes, and voice-phishing operations. These schemes have tricked hundreds of people to transfer money into mule accounts. But the problem goes far deeper. Criminal networks are profiting from tax evasion, smuggling, and large-scale embezzlement. In 2024, Vietnamese billionaire Truong My Lan was sentenced to death (since converted to life in prison) for embezzling $12 billion from the Saigon Commercial Bank. But what's driving the rise in financial crime across Southeast Asia? And what connects these cases?

The recent poll about people's opinion on replacing the income tax with a national retail sales tax has a rather surprising result.  Only 49% were at least somewhat confident that a national sales tax would help reduce illegal tax evasion while 36% didn't think it would help much if at all.  That's rather amazing given the fundamental differences in how a sales tax is collected vs. the income tax.To that end, the FAIRtax Guys revisit the study done by CPA Jade Walle in September of 2020 that concluded that switching from the income tax to the FAIRtax would reduce illegal evasion by 95%.

COVID and political uncertainty drove this "insurance policy" trend among the affluent.Switzerland built wealth by selling mercenaries, then banking services, then commodity trading — always profiting from what others can't do at home. Half the world's coffee/cocoa trades flow through landlocked Geneva. These offshore systems create stark inequality: rich people buy citizenship and hide assets while poor migrants face detention camps and deportation — wealth literally buys different rules and freedoms.Research your family history — you might qualify for EU citizenship through grandparents or heritage programs. Jessica Levinson explores how power over foreign commerce has shifted from Congress to the President, highlighting key laws like the Reciprocal Trade Agreements Act of 1934 and the Trade Act of 1974. The episode also covers President Biden's controversial pardon of his son, Hunter Biden, examining the constitutional power of presidential pardons, historical precedents, and political implications. These include mandatory investigations by the Department of Commerce, and potential court challenges under doctrines like the major questions doctrine and nondelegation doctrine.3️⃣ Presidential Pardons and Political Implications: The episode delves into President Biden's pardon of his son, Hunter Biden, explaining the broad and exclusive presidential power to grant pardons for federal crimes.
