Icon Wars: Has the Church Been Bowing to Idols? How Rome and the East Smuggle Idolatry into Worship Through Sentiment and Bad Arguments “Stop kissing idols.” When God thundered from Sinai, He did not mumble. He did not leave room for clever loopholes. He said: “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image… thou shalt not bow down thyself to them.” Yet for centuries, Rome and the East have tried to explain away what God made plain. In this episode of The Patriarchy Podcast, Pastor Joseph Spurgeon and Zach Krugler step into the Icon Wars. Are icons, statues, relics, and painted images harmless aids to worship… or baptized idolatry dressed up in tradition? The guys break down the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic arguments for icon veneration, including appeals to the incarnation, church history, temple imagery, and “honor passing through the image.” They examine why modern Protestants, exhausted by shallow evangelicalism, are being lured toward ancient aesthetics and mystical sentimentality. They also ask the practical questions many Christians wrestle with: Is every image of Jesus sinful? What about children’s Bibles and movies like The Chosen or The Passion of the Christ? What do we do with relics like the Shroud of Turin? Does church history actually support icon veneration? Can Christians distinguish between honor and worship? This is not a debate about art alone. It is a battle over worship, authority, and whether God gets to decide how He is approached. Faithful men do not improve God’s worship. They obey it. "Christ" is not Jesus' last name; it is His title—The Anointed One, the Messiah, the true King. The sermon concludes with a sobering promise from Philippians 2: Every single knee will bow to this name. It is not a matter of if you will bow; it is only a matter of when. Bowing today brings eternal salvation; waiting until judgment day brings eternal regret. True Christianity requires moving past a mediocre, title-only faith and fully surrendering every single lane of your life to the lordship of Christ.Notes for this sermon: https://lifechurchww.cls.co/WMmCWebsite | https://lifechurchww.comFacebook | https://facebook.com/lifechurchwwInstagram | https://instagram.com/lifechurchwwVida Music | https://vidamsc.com

John 13:5 Your King Serves You There was supposed to be a servant there. Before the start of the Passover Feast, a servant should have taken water and washed the participants’ feet. But as Jesus and his disciples prepared to remember God's deliverance of his people from slavery in Egypt, the servant was missing. So, who would serve? Maybe Peter would take the initiative. He often was the first to act. Perhaps John, who was very close to Jesus, would sense what needed to be done, take up the basin of water and get to work. Or perhaps it should be one of the lesser disciples—the ones whose names we don’t know as well—maybe scrubbing feet would be a fitting job for “the other” James, or Thaddeus, or Simon the Zealot. But no one was willing to take on the task. It was Jesus who took off his outer cloak, pushed up his sleeves, and went to work. Bowing before each of those disciples, he poured water over their feet and scrubbed them clean, drying them with a towel he had wrapped around his waist—12 disciples, 24 feet, 120 toes, all scrubbed clean by Jesus. Like the disciples, we too often prefer to be served rather than to serve. Having my feet washed by someone else sounds pleasant. Washing the feet of others doesn’t sound very nice at all. Sinful self-centeredness keeps us from seeing or desiring the opportunity to serve others, and by so doing, serving our Savior as well. But not our Jesus. Without a shred of self-centeredness, the very next day, he would have his outer cloak removed and go to work once again by volunteering his life on the cross for fallen humanity. And through that sacrifice, he has cleansed not just our feet, but our lives, our hearts, our souls for all eternity. Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for showing me your love in washing your disciples’ feet and washing away my sins. Help me serve you and others with a grateful heart. Amen. True courage is found in full submission to the Living God and learning to read the story He is telling. And the beginning of the story of Gideon models this for us wonderfully. The Text: “And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him, Take thy father's young bullock, even the second bullock of seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the grove that is by it…” (Judges 6:25-40)King's Cross Church is a member congregation of the CREC in Moscow, ID. Are Head Coverings Still Biblical Today? | 1 Corinthians 11:4-6

Resolute Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 31, 2026 6:20

Welcome to The Daily, where we study the Bible verse by verse, chapter by chapter, every day. Our shout-out today goes to Darwyn Sprick from Sioux Falls, SD. Thanks for your partnership in Project23. We cannot do this without donors like you. Our text today is 1 Corinthians 11:4-6. Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head, but every wife who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, since it is the same as if her head were shaven. For if a wife will not cover her head, then she should cut her hair short. But since it is disgraceful for a wife to cut off her hair or shave her head, let her cover her head. — 1 Corinthians 11:4-6 At this point, many readers want to dismiss the text. Head coverings feel ancient and culturally irrelevant to us today. But Paul is not focused on fabric in isolation. He is concerned with what head coverings signified in that culture and what their use—or misuse—communicated about honor, authority, and God's design in worship. In Corinth, head coverings were widely understood, visible symbols. They publicly communicated honor, relational order, and the distinction between men and women in the gathered church. When those symbols were ignored or intentionally reversed, the issue was not style—it was the message being communicated. Paul's concern is not that people failed to meet social expectations. His concern is that worship was beginning to teach something false about God's design. This is where we often miss the point. Every church uses symbols. Some are formal. Some are informal. Some are intentional. Some are unexamined. Bowing in prayer communicates reverence toward the God we call upon. Standing for worship communicates honor toward the God we sing to. Quiet reflection during the Lord's Supper communicates surrender to the Christ who gave himself for us. None of these actions or symbols save us. But all of them teach—both us and those around us—because visible practices shape how we understand the God we revere, honor, and submit to. That is why Paul treats this issue seriously. Worship is not merely expression; it is formation. What we repeatedly see and do in the gathered church trains our hearts and instructs others. So Paul presses the question beneath the symbol: Are the visible practices of the church reinforcing what Scripture teaches—or quietly contradicting it? This is not a call to return to ancient customs for their own sake. It is a call to ensure that what we practice in worship clearly reflects what God has revealed. God cares not only that he is revered, honored, and submitted to in worship, but that the way this happens does not confuse or mislead others. Here, the issue of Christian freedom surfaces again. Believers may have freedom in many areas, but love sometimes calls us to limit that freedom for the spiritual good of others. Paul is calling the church to handle worship carefully, because visible practices can either clarify the truth or create confusion—and confusion can hinder growth in Christ. Therefore, order here matters. So are head coverings still biblical today? Paul's answer isn't a simple yes-or-no about whether we wear fabric on our heads. It's a deeper call to examine whether our visible worship practices still communicate God's truth about honor, order, and design. The question is not whether we replicate Corinth's symbols, but whether our symbols—whatever they are—faithfully point to what God has revealed. DO THIS: Pay attention to the visible practices of your church's worship—especially those related to gender, authority, and order. Ask whether they clearly communicate God's design or quietly reflect cultural pressure instead. ASK THIS: If someone asked me, "Are head coverings still biblical today?", how would I answer based on Scripture rather than assumption? What visible practices in my church are teaching theology—intentionally or unintentionally? Where might Christian freedom need to be limited for the sake of clarity, love, and witness? PRAY THIS: God, give me wisdom to discern what worship is teaching—both to my heart and to others. Help our church honor your design clearly, lovingly, and faithfully, even when culture pushes in a different direction. Amen. PLAY THIS: "Be Thou My Vision"

Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour

The Shulhan Aruch writes that one who recites Kaddish should bow at five points during the recitation: the first word, "Yitgadal"; "Yeheh Shemeh Rabba"; "Yitbarach"; "Berich Hu"; "Ve'imru Amen" after "Da'amiran Be'alma." Some have the custom to bow also while reciting "Ve'imru Amen" before "Yeheh Shemeh Rabba." A number of Poskim, including Rav Haim Palachi (Turkey, 1788-1868) and the Kaf Ha'haim Sofer (Rav Yaakob Haim Sofer, Baghdad-Jerusalem, 1870-1939), cite the Yad Aharon as ruling that one should now each time he says the word "Amen" during Kaddish. It is recorded (in the work Neveh Shalom) that this was the custom in Cairo, and this is the position taken by the Ben Ish Hai (Rav Yosef Haim of Baghdad, 1833-1909), in Od Yosef Hai. By contrast, the Ish Masliah (Rav Masliah Mazuz, 1911-1971) claimed that this custom has no Halachic basis, and should not be followed. This is the opinion accepted by Hacham David Yosed, in Halacha Berura, writing that one should bow only at the five points mentioned by the Shulhan Aruch. In contrast to all these views, the Gaon of Vilna (Rav Eliyahu of Vilna, 1720-1797) ruled that one should not bow at all during Kaddish. The accepted custom among Sepharadim, however, is to bow at the five points mentioned by the Shulhan Aruch, and some bow also while reciting "Ve'imru Amen" before "Yeheh Shemeh Rabba," as mentioned. It is customary to turn to the sides when reciting the words "Be'hayechon U'b'yomechon." This is done as a sign of affection for the congregation, as these words express the wish that Hashem's Name should be glorified with the coming of Mashiah "in your lives and in your days" – during the lifetime of the members of the congregation. Summary: Different customs exist when it comes to bowing during the recitation of Kaddish. The accepted custom among Sepharadim is to bow at the five points mentioned by the Shulhan Aruch, and some bow also while reciting "Ve'imru Amen" before "Yeheh Shemeh Rabba."

Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour

There are those who have the practice to rise for Barechu, though this is not the generally accepted custom among Sepharadim. An exception is the recitation of Barechu on Friday night, when many Sepharadim are accustomed to standing, following the teachings of Kabbalah. Some have the custom to momentarily lift themselves off their seats when responding "Baruch Hashem Ha'meborach Le'olam Va'ed" to the Hazzan's declaration of Barechu. The Ben Ish Hai (Rav Yosef Haim of Baghdad, 1833-1909) writes in his Od Yosef Hai that this was the common practice in Baghdad. He adds, however, that there seems to be no basis for such a practice in the Halachic sources. Hacham Bension Abba Shaul (Israel, 1924-1998) opposed this custom, and ruled that one should simply remain seated without moving when responding to Barechu, without moving at all. He explained that it is improper to bow on occasions when there is no Halachic requirement to do so, as this undermines the significance of this gesture. Therefore, as there is no Halachic basis for bowing when responding to Barechu, this should not be done. Summary: Some have the custom to slightly lift their bodies off their seats when responding to Barechu, but some Poskim discourage this practice.

Episode Summary: During the “Great Awokening” in 2020 many churches cracked under the pressure. These cracks ran deeper than political talking points and cultural morays but stemmed from a divide at the level of worldview. Pastor Jon Benzinger from Redeemer Bible Church joins us to explain how social-justice ideology is still present and active. Even while the vigor of the woke movement has quieted, there remains a gospel-level conflict in the worldview of the people. We discuss how to spot the woke worldview's lingering assumptions about sin, justice, and identity, and why changing vocabulary doesn't always mean changing beliefs.Jon also shares practical guidance for Christians navigating cultural pressure, how churches can guard against ideological capture, and why clarity, courage, and genuine repentance, not simply rebranding, are the path forward. We close with a look at One Gospel, a new effort to rebuild unity around the core gospel's first principles. If you want a clear roadmap for the church today, this episode is for you.Who is Disciple Nations Alliance (DNA)? Since 1997, DNA's mission has been to equip followers of Jesus around the globe with a biblical worldview, empowering them to build flourishing families, communities, and nations.

But we are not ripe, our lives are very busy, our minds are very distracted, so let's do the best we can to remember the name until the point that the name remembers us and it repeats itself within us.” – Krishna DasAbout Krishna Das:Layering traditional Hindu kirtan with instantly accessible melodies and modern instrumentation, Grammy nominee Krishna Das has been called yoga's “rock star.” With a remarkably soulful voice that touches the deepest chord in even the most casual listener, Krishna Das – known to friends, family, and fans as simply KD – has taken the call-and-response chanting out of yoga centers and into concert halls, becoming a worldwide icon and the best-selling chant artist of all time. His album ‘Live Ananda' (released January 2012) was nominated for a Grammy in the Best New Age album category.KD spent the late '60s traveling across the country as a student of Ram Dass, and in August 1970, he finally made the journey to India, which led him to Ram Dass' own beloved guru, Neem Karoli Baba, known to most as Maharaj-ji. Krishna Das now travels the world sharing his kirtan practice and wonderful stories of his life, of Maharaji-ji, of his life on the Path and discusses bringing chanting into our lives through retreats and workshops.
