Nicole and Diana discuss Levi Richards' journal account of Joseph Smith's First Vision. Nicole shares her personal connection to Levi Richards, who is her husband's 4th-great-granduncle and the brother of Willard Richards. They talk about Levi's life, his mission to England, and his role as a physician. They then focus on Levi's journal and its significance as a historical source, specifically the 11 June 1843 entry where Levi recorded Joseph Smith's testimony about the First Vision. Nicole and Diana compare Levi's account to other sources, including Joseph Smith's journal and the Nauvoo Neighbor newspaper, and they analyze the details of the meeting. Listeners will learn about the different accounts of Joseph Smith's First Vision, including the one recorded in Levi Richards' journal. They will also learn about the importance of Levi's journal as a firsthand historical source and how to analyze historical documents. Additionally, they discuss Levi's later life, including his marriage to Sarah Griffith, their mission together, and their son. This summary was generated by Google Gemini. Go To https://rumble.com/user/MormonRenegade for free video & access to exclusive content So about ten years ago I remember sitting around the dinner table with my kids and I remember they said something about the Founding Fathers that was just patently false. I asked where they heard such a thing and they said school. This caused me to look at their curriculum and what I discovered was that certain power brokers on the left had infiltrated public schools and one of their agendas was to discredit the founders so they could “progress” past the constitution. Unfortunately, we are now seeing the same thing happening to Mormonism. There is a movement right now within Mormonism (The Doctrine of Christ Group) that is doing at best revisionist history and at worst just telling flat out lies about Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, John Taylor and others that were so influential and vital to the Restoration in those early days. They are doing this to discredit that early leadership, by discrediting them they then can turn the Restored Gospel into something that appeals more to their own hearts desires. This type of tactic is not only wrong but insidious. Now a while back Justin Griffin and Taylor Smith had a debate about Griffin's movie “Who Killed Joseph Smith” where Griffin accuses John Taylor & Willard Richards of killing Hyrum & Joseph. But darn it wouldn't you know it Griffin marked that debate as private. Well, no need to worry because Taylor still has his copy and is still available on his YouTube Chanel.  Today Taylor joins me on the podcast to have a discussion about the debate. During the course of our conversation, as we breakdown the high points of that debate I think it will become apparent why Griffin might not want this out and circulating. Oh, and just for good measure I have included the link to the full debate in the show notes.  --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dave-kirkenbower/support

I am going to shoot ya straight straight...I am a guy who believes in some conspiracy theories. However every so often a conspiracy comes along that requires more than just a tinfoil hat....it requires an entire room made of tinfoil. On this Episode we will debunk the movie "Who Killed Joseph Smith". This movie makes the claim that John Taylor & Willard Richards were the ones that killed Joseph & Hyrum. To help debunk this I brought on Justin Francom. Justin Francom has taken an exhaustive study of this topic and has a lot of great insight on the theory and does a great job in debunking it. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/dave-kirkenbower/support

Apparently, a new movement of Latter-Day Saints, a splinter group has formed, gained prominence, and is posting media, documentaries, and persuasive content suggesting an alternative history to the mainstream narrative understood by most Latter-Day Saints. They suggest the church lost the Melchezideck Priesthood in 1834, per scripture, they believe the martyrdom of Joseph Smith was staged by friends in betrayal, not the mob and that modern prophets have lost their spriritual gifts and one must concentrate on excersizing the aaronic Priesthood and the baptism of fire and Spirit until Joseph Smith returns with the keys. Whether you believe it or not or don't even know the history well enough to tell, this one was INTERESTING. Véase Santos, tomo I, págs. 530–561.

From Come Follow MeThe afternoon of June 27, 1844, found Joseph and Hyrum Smith in jail once again, accompanied by John Taylor and Willard Richards. They believed they were innocent of any crime, but they submitted to arrest, hoping to prevent violence against the Saints in Nauvoo. This wasn't the first time that enemies of the Church had put the Prophet Joseph in prison, but this time he seemed to know that he would not return alive. He and his friends tried to comfort each other by reading from the Book of Mormon and singing hymns. Then gunshots were heard, and within a few minutes the mortal lives of Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum had come to an end.And yet it was not the end of the divine cause they had embraced. And it was not the end of the Restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ. There was more work to do and more revelation that would guide the Church forward. Killing the Prophet could not kill the work of God.

In this episode, we had the remarkable opportunity to speak with some missionaries directly from Carthage Jail. For those who are new to the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (otherwise known as the Mormon church), Carthage Jail was the place where Joseph Smith, Jr, the first latter-day prophet in the LDS Church, was killed. He was in jail awaiting trial when a mob of angry men broke through the door and shot both Joseph and Hyrum, Joseph's brother. The sister missionaries that joined us today talk about their experience as missionaries serving on such sacred ground. What did you learn from the missionaries? Let us know in the comments below! Error: At 18:48 David mentions the room where John Taylor hid the wounded Willard Richards. It was actually Willard Richards hiding a wounded John Taylor. He mixed up the names.

On this episode, Joseph and Hyrum Smith wake up in Carthage jail to a bustling town filled with anti-Mormon militiamen, surrounded by their closest acolytes. Various meeting take place, Jo sends messengers to Nauvoo calling for documents and witnesses in the upcoming trial for treason. Governor Ford finally has a sit-down with the prophet and they discuss everything which led up to Jo and Hyrum being in Carthage jail. Then a hearing is held to determine whether or not to keep the prisoners locked in the jail and to schedule a date for the criminal hearing. Ford decides to disband the militias in Carthage and Warsaw as they were no longer needed. He then resolves to make his way to Nauvoo to talk with the citizens and give a speech to the Mormons there on June 27th, however, he won’t be taking the prisoners with him during the journey as he’d previously stated. Uncle John Smith visits the prisoners and carries a message to Almon Babbit in Macedonia on behalf of the prophet. The prisoners lay down for the evening while Willard Richards scratches away in his journal. A gunshot is heard outside. On this episode, tensions are REALLY high between the Mormons and anti-Mormons in Nauvoo and Carthage respectively. We begin with John Taylor telling us about his meeting with Governor Thomas Ford about the Mormon side of the conflict. Because Ford was surrounded by enemies of the church as Taylor was telling the story, with affidavits included, the men scarcely let Taylor get a word out without calling what he said a “God damned lie”. Taylor returns to Nauvoo carrying Ford’s letter to Joseph Smith, which told Jo to surrender to arrest or the militia would be in Nauvoo before nightfall. Jo resolves to run away with his brother, Hyrum, and his closest advisor, Willard Richards, along with his hitman, Porter Rockwell. They cross the Mississippi under the cover of night and reach the home of a Mormon outside Nauvoo where they make camp for their journey to the “Great Basin” beyond the “Rocky Mountains”. The arresting posse of 30 men arrive in Nauvoo that morning to arrest Joseph and Hyrum, only to return to Carthage empty-handed, forcing Governor Ford’s hand to call the militia into Nauvoo to search for the fugitives. On this episode, Joseph Smith’s presidential campaign is ramping up! Jo nominates James Arlington Bennet for his Vice-Presidential candidate, White-out Willard Richards drafts a letter to Bennet, notice is printed in the Nauvoo Neighbor, and a retraction is published the following week. A special conference is called to preach to 8,000 Mormons about politics, the campaign, and the Mormon expansionist agenda. Jo picks a few of his dissenters out of the crowd and grand-stands about them being enemies, preaching about how he will “use up” those who oppose the mission of the church. Construction on the Nauvoo Temple and tithing are emphasized. Bloody Brigham Young makes a speech about not filing legal complaints when wrongs are committed against you. An exploratory group is formed and armed to the teeth to venture into the wilds of Texas and Oregon for the next Mormon settlement and staging ground. This is our final conversation with Brian Stutzman, and we'll talk about Warsaw, Illinois today.  Brian thinks this should be a must-stop for church history buffs.  We'll also discuss how Brian came to love the city, and how he came there and how he would like to restore the city to its historic roots. https://youtu.be/CufDvOUZT-g Brian:  I drove into town and saw this building.   It says Thomas Sharp, Warsaw Signal.  Little did I know that the Lutherans help fund that building.  How ironic. In 1987, there was a Mormon historian from Nauvoo named Michael Trap. He came down and he gathered some people together and says, "You know what, you got some history here. Maybe it's the dark side of Mormon history. But let's take this old grocery store."  I think it was built in 1880, "and we'll raise some money and we'll make it look like it would have an 1840. We'll get an old press in here." ... So I really enjoy getting to know the good people.  They had me speak at their historical society last year when my book was in the first edition. There's a ton--1550 people, we had over 100 people together at the high school and I gave a little presentation on the overview of my book. This sweet old lady comes up and says, "Will you move here to Warsaw?" Because I told them at the end of my presentation I said, "You need to promote your town. You've got a story to tell. There's a tragic triangle here. Thousands, millions of people know about Nauvoo. Thousands, millions of people know about Carthage. Nobody's heard of Warsaw. When people go, they're only seeing two thirds of what they should see.  You need to come down.  You need to invite LDS tourists to come here. You need to have a sign that says this is where Willard Richards and Brigham Young we're going to build a Mormon community at our request that people of Warsaw's request, even though the local histories, including 1880 Thomas Greg said that they almost fell into the hands of the Mormons." He also tells about a beloved Mormon family in Warsaw.  Check out our conversation, by signing up to our free newsletter to hear the final part.  Go to https://gospeltangents.com/newsletter and I will send you a secret link to hear the conclusion! Sources: Oliver Cowdery Journal: https://eadview.lds.org/findingaid/MS%203429 (Journal Page 5) Chastised for not blessing: A President of the Elders’ Quorum, old father Baker, was called upon to visit a very sick woman, a sister in the Church; they sent for him to lay hands upon her. It was a very sickly time, and there were scarcely a person to attend upon the sick, for nearly all were afflicted. Father Baker was one of those tenacious, ignorant, self-willed, over-righteous Elders, and when he went into the house he enquired what the woman wanted. She told him that she wished him to lay hands upon her. Father Baker saw a tea-pot on the coals, and supposed that there was tea in it, and immediately turned upon his heels, saying, “God don’t want me to lay hands on those who do not keep the Word of Wisdom,” and he went out. He did not know whether the pot contained catnip, penny-royal, or some other mild herb, and he did not wait for any one to tell him. That class of people are ignorant and over-righteous, and they are not in the true line by any means. JD 4:24, Brigham Young, August 17, 1856 Lobelia: If the Saints of God actually have the faith of the ancients, let them practise the doctrine in their works. A man will tell me that he is a “Mormon,” that he believes in the faith of the ancients, when at the same time he practises everything else but their religion. My rule is to practise our religion. If I want a drink of catnip tea, or of composition, or of lobelia, it is all right, but I will first practise my religion. You know that it is hardly allowable in Utah to drink any more than five gallons of lobelia at once, for the Assembly of Deseret once had the matter under consideration. JD 2:276, Jedediah M. Grant, March 11, 1855 Juvinile Instructor 1866 Tea/Coffee and Meat in Summer: https://archive.org/stream/juvenileinstruct13geor#page/n3/mode/2up/ Poisoning: It may seem incredible especially to the young people of the Latter day Saints that men could be so wicked as to seek to destroy the Saints by poisoning them but such has been the case and but for the preserving care of God and their observance of the Word of Wisdom many would have died thus from poison placed by their enemies in tea coffee or other liquors which they were expected to drink The only absolute safety from such disaster is in entire abstinence from those things which our Heavenly Father declares are not good. https://books.google.com/books/content?id=oxQxAQAAIAAJ&pg=PA198&img=1&zoom=3&hl=en&sig=ACfU3U3v9kRpphNFCIkN5Ky7kLHp2_5Eug&ci=552%2C955%2C382%2C145&edge=0 Beer (Mild Drinks): Prophet, under date of April 19, 1843, states: “Levi Richards is one of the best physicians anyone was ever ac-quainted with.” On December 15, 1843, the Prophet journalized as follows: “I was seized with dryness of mouth and throat, sickness of stomach, and vomited freely; my wife waited on me, assisted by my scribe, Dr. Willard Richards, and his brother --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mormon-history-podcast/support

On this episode, we give Willard Richards his very own NaMo Nickname and read his whitewashed history of Jo’s arrest and court hearing in June of 1841. Jo had found some way to squirrel himself out from under nearly every legal trouble with which he was accused since he’d started the religion 11 years prior to this and his lawyers saw it fit to stick with the trend. We discuss how the trial of the prophet was seen by local periodicals and the Warsaw Signal’s reaction to the increasing political power wielded by Jo and the church. After that we have on Gottfried to discuss Isaiah in the Book of Mormon from a nuanced perspective and finish up with a very brief listener mail segment spurring a much-needed correction.
