Mae V. Cowdery (1909 - 1953) was a poet in the Harlem Renaissance literary movement. Her brief, but successful career as a writer started when she was just a teenager. She was mentored by some of the brightest stars of the Harlem Renaissance but has been largely overlooked. You may have noticed we didn't have a single telethon last year, because of supporters like you who have given us stability. But now, we're looking to go bigger and better. With your help, we'll be able to equip thousands of Christians, strengthen the faith, and bring the gospel to the lost. Not only will we be putting out more content, but this will also allow us to promote the entire Bob Enyart Library of content. Just like how C.S. On the evening of Sept. 21 and the morning of Sept. 22, 1823, the angel Moroni appeared to Joseph Smith, teaching him and revealing the nearby location of an ancient record written on gold plates — the Book of Mormon. He quoted scripture about the Restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ and the gathering of Israel. With the approaching 200th anniversary of Moroni's visits — four total — the Church News podcast features Elder Kyle S. McKay, a General Authority Seventy and Church historian and recorder, and Keith A. Erekson, director of research and outreach for the Church History Department, talking about these historic visitations. The Church News Podcast is a weekly podcast that invites listeners to make a journey of connection with members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints across the globe. Host Sarah Jane Weaver, reporter and editor for The Church News for a quarter-century, shares a unique view of the stories, events, and most important people who form this international faith. With each episode, listeners are asked to embark on a journey to learn from one another and ponder, “What do I know now?” because of the experience. Is the raw material of literature the paper, ink, vellum, paphyrus, and increasingly electronic data that it is inscribed on? Or is the stuff of literature the storehouse of tropes, techniques, and plots that authors draw from? And what kind of labor is the process of transforming that matter into literature? Earlier this year, Taylor Cowdery published an academic study on just this subject. The title of Taylor's book is Matter and Making in Early English Poetry: Literary Production from Chaucer to Sidney (Cambridge University Press, 2023). Through case studies of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, Gower's Confessio Amantis, Thomas Hoccleve's Series, and Thomas Wyatt's poetry, Taylor captures a wide discourse around creativity and originality. Taylor is Associate Professor of English and Robert M. Lumiansky Fellow at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Taylor also serves as the Director of the Program in Medieval and Early Modern Studies, and Taylor's writing has been published in ELH, Studies in the Age of Chaucer, and The Legacy of Boethius in Medieval England. John Yargo is Visiting Assistant Professor of English at Boston College. He earned a PhD in English literature from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, specializing in the environmental humanities and early modern culture. In 2023, his dissertation won the J. Leeds Barroll Prize, given by the Shakespeare Association of America. His peer-reviewed articles have been published or are forthcoming in the Journal for Early Modern Culture Studies, Early Theatre, Studies in Philology, and Shakespeare Studies. This week we talk with Aaron Cowdery, an animator and storyboard artist based in Southern New Jersey. Growing up, he would always find himself either drawing or playing video games in his free time, making Sonic and Dragonball Z Flash cartoons for websites like Newgrounds.com in the 2000s. After getting a BFA in Animation at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Aaron moved to the Greater New York Area to work on shows such as Amazon Prime's Niko and the Sword of Light, Adult Swim's Ballmastrz 9009, and Apple TV+'s Duck and Goose. When not spending time with his wife and toddler, or behind a Cintiq, Aaron enjoys dabbling in sneaker culture and sinking his teeth in to a good video game. www.AaronCowdery.com @ChakraXcartoons

Latter-day Saints are no strangers to the fact that even the best, brightest, and spiritually strongest of them can have the Church withdraw fellowship from them. Such was the case with the Church's "second elder" (Doctrine and Covenants 20:3) Oliver Cowdery. Despite being one of the founding members of the Church and the many miraculous experiences he had with the Angel Moroni and the Restoration, Cowdery was excommunicated in April 1838. Happily, Cowdery returned to the Church and was rebaptized on November 12, 1848. What did Oliver do while he was out of the Church? Why did he return? What can today's Latter-day Saints learn from Oliver's experiences of being excommunicated and returning to the Church? Read this KnoWhy to find out. Jumping into the Gathering. This is the first time we see the Kirtland Era referenced. I am most excited to talk about the time that prophets have foretold: THE GATHERING. The Saints are asked to do tough things. Like us we are asked to follow the Lord. I love how Jesus introduces himself here and we can rest assured, He is with us.
"View of the Hebrews" is a book first published in 1823 by Ethan Smith of Vermont. In "View of the Hebrews," Ethan Smith argues (among other things) that the Native Americans were descended from the Lost Ten Tribes of Israel. This book was so popular that it had a second printing in 1825. Mormon General Authorities and apologists have feared "View of the Hebrews" for over a century, starting with B.H. Roberts in the early 1900s. Why is "View of the Hebrews" potentially problematic for the Mormon church and the Book of Mormon? A few reasons: Joseph Smith claimed to have come up with the idea for the Book of Mormon the VERY SAME YEAR (1823) that "View of the Hebrews" was first published. Coincidence? Ethan Smith (the author of "View of the Hebrews") was Oliver Cowdery's pastor in Vermont PRIOR to his working with Joseph Smith as Book of Mormon "scribe," and it is certain that Cowdery was familiar with the book. Coincidence? Mormon General Authority and historian B.H. Roberts wrote hundreds of pages doing research on the disturbing similarities between View of the Hebrews and the Book of Mormon. Later, B.H. Roberts went on to lose his testimony in the historicity of the Book of Mormon. Coincidence? Recently, the brilliant Radio Free Mormon decided to read "View of the Hebrews" from cover to cover to see what the "hubub" is all about. Join us as we explore the following questions: What is View of the Hebrews fundamentally about? What are the important similarities and differences between View of the Hebrews and the Book of Mormon? Was Ethan Smith's "View of the Hebrews" a source of inspiration for the Book of Mormon? What cultural dynamics were at play in upstate New York in the early 1820s that could have influenced BOTH books? Are there any direct connections between "View of the Hebrews" and Joseph Smith? Why has "View of the Hebrews" caused so much concern for Mormon apologists, from B.H. Roberts to today ? How have Mormon apologists responded to View of the Hebrews? Does "View of the Hebrews" present significant, compelling problems for LDS Church and Book of Mormon truth claims?

We consider the backdrop of section 18 and reflect on the principles taught to Oliver Cowdery. Joseph Smith Papers: JS dictated this revelation in Fayette, New York, within the first few days of June 1829. Although the first portion of the revelation is addressed to Oliver Cowdery, the remainder provides direction for Cowdery and David Whitmer jointly, including a call for them to find twelve disciples. The revelation then speaks to an intended future audience for JS’s revelation, addressing these unidentified twelve disciples. Previous revelations had always addressed the individuals directly involved as they or a scribe recorded the words JS dictated.

We considerwhat this teaches about the character of Joseph's father and we reflect on how we can desire to serve God. Revelations in Context: Soon after returning to Manchester, Joseph Sr. agreed to welcome as a boarder at his home a schoolteacher named Oliver Cowdery. Joseph Sr. hesitated when Cowdery, who had heard rumors about Joseph Jr.’s visions and the plates, began to pepper him with questions. Father Smith may have been reluctant due to the harassment his family had received from neighbors and local clergy. Whatever the reason for his initial hesitation, he yielded to the revelation’s mandate and served as a faithful witness to Joseph Smith’s early visions.

In Frank & Fearless, Cowdery reflects on some of the most notorious and difficult cases of his distinguished career, including the headline-grabbing criminal trials of Gordon Wood, Keli Lane and Jeffrey Gilham.
[paypal-donation] We're going to talk about an Oliver Cowdery forgery, unrelated to the Hofmann forgeries, and find out how Jerald Tanner concluded this Cowdery document was fake. It was good training when Mark Hofmann was peddling fake documents. https://youtu.be/iwMU2Y5Xrfw Sandra: Oliver Cowdery supposedly wrote a little pamphlet, "A Defense in a Rehearsal of My Grounds for Separating Myself from the Latter Day Saints," (long title.) Anyways, there was this Cowdery pamphlet where he talks about, and I think it's the priesthood restoration, that when the angel came, he sounded very much like the voice of Sidney Rigdon. And so this would raise questions about the whole scenario of how the Book of Mormon really came about. Was it a conspiracy of Rigdon and Smith or something, you know? And so, here is this BYU professor challenging us that, "I don't think you can prove the Cowdery defense is a legitimate pamphlet by Cowdrey." So Jerald got into a real study of that and finally concluded that Anderson was right. The document, you can't find anyone mentioning the document before around 1900. And it seemed odd that David Whitmer, Cowdery's brother-in-law wouldn't have mentioned such a pamphlet when Whitmer wrote "An Address to All Believers in Christ" in 1887. Whitmer didn't mention this. And so, we couldn't. We did a lot of research trying to figure out if the Cowdery pamphlet could have been printed at the date it said in the town it said. I went up to the U and did research on printing presses in this town at the time period and, you know, a lot of minutiae. Anyways, Jerald finally concluded that Anderson was right. There is no evidence that the Cowdery pamphlet goes back to Cowdery. In doing that research. He had looked at that on wording in the Cowdery pamphlet and he noticed that there were phrases in it that were just like phrases in--Cowdery did a series of letters in the Messenger and Advocate back when he was a faithful Mormon, and Jerald says somebody used the Cowdery letters from the Messenger and Advocate to make this pamphlet. They've tried to imitate Cowdery's writing style by taking phrases from these letters. Although they were in a different context, but the phrasing of Cowdery from these letters to make this document. So, he'd already been down this trail before on trying to figure out through analysis of the content of whether it could really be a forgery or something that the author would have really written. And so, when he looks at the Salamander Letter, he says, "These are phrases. It's too pat. There are phrases here that are lifted from E.D. Howe from this other early book to make something sound like it's Martin Harris, but it's too pat in the picking up of phrases." We also talk about the term "anti-Mormon." GT: a lot of people call you an anti-Mormon. What do you think of that term? Sandra: I don't like the term because I think it implies an animosity towards the whole group. It's like saying you're anti-black would imply against blacks in general. I don't see myself as anti-Mormon. I'm not against the Mormon people. I mean that's my family. I still have Mormon family that are active, so I don't see myself as anti-Mormon. I'm anti-Mormonism. Check out our conversation with Sandra Tanner…. Don't forget to check out part 1 and part 2! Jerald Tanner discovered a forged Oliver Cowdery document from the early 1900s. [paypal-donation]

Oliver Cowdery has been accused of practicing polygamy before he was authorized to do so. In our next conversation with Dr. Bill Smith we'll address these rumors. Are they true? https://youtu.be/RJwoRNCjKuc Bill: That I think is wrong. I think it developed out of a story that happened because before Oliver left on his Lamanite mission to the borders of the Lamanites in Missouri, he was with Parley Pratt and a couple of other guys going to be missionaries out there to the Lamanites. They get commissioned by revelation to do this. Before he leaves, he has asked Elizabeth Whitmer to marry him, so he is engaged to her. On the way through Ohio he meets another woman there, falls madly in love with her, asks her to marry him. That's the extent of any Cowdery polygamy. That was a pretty big issue for a number of early Mormons. Some of his mission companions talk about this later. That was a big issue. He has a high council session about this thing. He repents. “I'm really going to marry Elizabeth.” This other woman was just a flight of fancy or something. But that's the extent of it. We will talk about Oliver's accusation of Joseph's dirty, nasty, filthy affair with Fanny Alger. Bill: There is no evidence as far as I know of that. I think that Oliver and some other people were aware of the Alger affair... Don't forget to listen to our conversation about Emma! Check out our conversation….. [paypal-donation]
