Beginning in 1846, thousands of Latter-day Saints left Nauvoo, Illinois and trekked over one thousand miles west to the Salt Lake Valley.  Having, of necessity, abandoned the Nauvoo Temple for which they had worked so hard and sacrificed so much, they were now a temple-centered people without a temple. Now they certainly would go on to build more temples—the first of which was the Saint George Temple, completed in 1877—but how would the saints do temple related work in the meantime? In this episode of Church History Matters, Casey and Scott walk through the unique story of how temple work continued during that 30-year season of no temples, where Church leaders used Ensign Peak, a multi-purpose building called the Council House, a one-of-a-kind building called the Endowment House, and administrative offices for these purposes. We'll also highlight some important take-aways from Church leaders' response to the crushing government legislation they faced in the late 1880s forcing the decision between losing all temples or ending the practice of plural marriage.

This essay traces the modern-day usage and understanding of temples from the Kirtland Temple to Nauvoo and the Salt Lake Temple. Architecture was used to teach principles. While the Kirtland Temple was preparatory (think of the vision of Christ and the conference of keys by Abraham, Moses, Abraham, Elias, and finally Elijah), the Nauvoo Temple was dedicated to ritual usage. In 1879, the Church reduced temple usage to rituals, and thus assembly rooms are missing from later temples. Through his paper, Cowan shows how temples have changed according to revelation and how prophets have seen models in vision that then have been incorporated in the temples God's people built. The post Conference Talks: Latter-day Houses of the Lord: Developments in Their Design and Function first appeared on The Interpreter Foundation.

In the Spring of 1842 Sarah Kimball and Margaret Cook decided to create a women's benevolent society to sew new and repair damaged clothing worn by workers building the Nauvoo Temple.  They asked Eliza Snow to write articles and bylaws.  In this episode of Religion Today, host Martin Tanner describes how the Relief Society was formed, and how Joseph Smith "ordained" its first Presidency and helped organize it after the pattern of the Priesthood.  After research and prayer, the Relief Society women voted on on issues. They were seen as bright and competent. This led to Utah in 1869 being the first place in the entire United States and its territories to give women the unfettered right to vote. Wyoming was next. Susan B. Anthony visited Utah years before she was successful in her suffrage efforts, to learn how Utah women had acquired such power.  From the efforts of Utah's Relief Society the right of women to vote spread around the world. The 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, the "Susan B. Anthony" amendment giving all U.S. women the right to vote, passed in 1920, which was 51 years after Utah women had the right to vote.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Cheers, and Blessings The Odd Man Out   Show Notes   Three Main Books: BOM Doctrines, & Covenants Pearl of Great Price   Joseph Smith said, "the mind or the intelligence which man possesses is CO-equal [CO-eternal] with God himself" (TPJS 353) "The intelligence of spirits had no beginning, neither will it have an end." Another teaching is that the words of The Living Oracles, or living prophets are greater than the Bible, BOM, or Doctrine, & Covenants Abraham 3:3 reads “And the Lord said unto me: These are the governing ones; and the name of the great one is Kolob, because it is near unto me, for I am the Lord thy God…”   Verse 9 in the same chapter adds that “Kolob is set nigh unto the throne of God.” Joseph Smith, the founder of Mormonism, stated, “I wish to declare I have always and in all congregations when I have preached on the subject of the Deity, it has been the plurality of Gods” (History of the Church 6:474). Brigham Young, the second prophet and president of the LDS Church, said, “How many Gods there are, I do not know. But there never was a time when there were not Gods…” (Journal of Discourses 7:333). Mormon Apostle Orson Pratt taught, “We were begotten by our Father in Heaven; the person of our Father in Heaven was begotten on a previous heavenly world by His Father; and again, He was begotten by a still more ancient Father, and so one, from one generation to generation” (The Seer, pg. 132). The god of Mormonism is not immutable. Whereas God's perfection makes it never necessary for Him to change, the God of Mormonism changes both in his physical person and moral attributes. This is demonstrated by the fact that he evolved from a man into a God and that he has changed decrees which are theoretically “unalterable.” Examples of this would include the abandonment of polygamy in 1890, the reversal of the ban which withheld the LDS Priesthood from Blacks in 1978, and the changes in the LDS temple ceremony in 1980. The god of Mormonism is not eternally God. Joseph Smith taught that God was not always God when he stated, “We have imagined and supposed that God was God from all eternity. I will refute that idea, and take away the veil, so that you may see” (Teachings, pg. 345). Because the LDS God is limited to a physical body, he is not omnipresent. Brigham Young said, “Some would have us believe that God is present everywhere. It is not so” (Journal of Discourses 6:345). LDS Apostle James Talmage stated that neither God the Father, nor “any actual person of any one member of the Godhead can be physically present in more than one place at one time” (The Articles of Faith, pg. 39). The Mormon God's “omnipresence” is fulfilled through the Holy Spirit which, according to Mormon Apostle John Widtsoe, is not to be confused with the Holy Ghost (Evidences and Reconciliations, pp. 76-77). Mormon author W. Cleon Skousen stated that God is God only because another force sustains him as such. He wrote, “Through modern revelation we learn that the universe is filled with vast numbers of intelligences, and we further learn that Elohim is God simply because all of these intelligences honor and sustain Him as such…since God ‘acquired' the honor and sustaining influence of ‘all things' it follows as a corollary that if He should ever do anything to violate the confidence or ‘sense of justice' of these intelligences, they would promptly withdraw their support, and the ‘power' of God would disintegrate…'He would cease to be God'” (The First 2,000 Years, pp. 355-356). The Bible “Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me” (Isaiah 43:10-11). It appears to me the end point of Mormonism like most occult religions is godhood. They teach the Hindu philosophy that humans are unrealized gods. On the afternoon of June 8, 1873, preaching from the pulpit of the Mormon Tabernacle in Salt Lake City, President Brigham Young declared: The devil told the truth ... I do not blame Mother Eve. I would not have had her miss eating the forbidden fruit for anything in the world.... They must pass through the same ordeals as the Gods, that they may know good from evil... .27 Former President Joseph Fielding Smith stated it in these words: The fall of man came as a blessing in disguise.... I never speak of the part Eve took in this fall as a sin, nor do I accuse Adam of a sin.... We can hardly look upon anything resulting in such benefits as being a sin... Apostle Pratt wrote, If we should take a million of worlds like this and number their particles, we should find that there are more gods than there are particles of matter in those worlds. The Gods who dwell in the heaven have been ... exalted also, from fallen men to Celestial Gods to inhabit their Heaven forever and ever." Mormon President Spencer W. Kimball declared: In each of us is the potentiality to become a God-pure, holy, true, influential, powerful, independent of earthly forces.... We were in the beginning with God.... Man can transform himself.... He has in him the seeds of Godhood that can grow. He can lift himself by his very bootstraps.32 No salvation lest thou believe in Joseph Smith President Joseph Fielding Smith made that clear when he wrote: [There is] no salvation without accepting Joseph Smith. If Joseph Smith was verily a prophet, and if he told the truth when he said that he stood in the presence of angels sent from the Lord, and obtained the keys of authority, and the commandment to organize the Church of Jesus Christ once again upon the earth, then this knowledge is of the most vital importance to the entire world. No man can reject that testimony without incurring the most dreadful consequences, for he cannot enter the kingdom of God.' "No man or woman in this dispensation will ever enter into the Celestial Kingdom of God without the consent of Joseph Smith."   A MODERN DILEMMA, Chapter 5 of Holy Priesthood Volume 3   Pages 69-77 http://ogdenkraut.com/?page_id=124 Women’s Rights Generally speaking, women have been treated unfairly throughout history. Many of their sacrifices and labors have been unnoticed, forgotten, or never recorded–not only anciently, but also in our own dispensation. So it is no wonder that most of them feel inferior to men and feel they are not entitled to hold the Priesthood. In her Sunstone Symposium paper, Andrea Moore Emmett wrote: Yes, Mormon women know of those nameless pioneer women who broke their china into pieces for the Nauvoo Temple, bore and buried babies on the plains, and sacrificed their hearts to become plural wives. Mormon women know something of Emma and Lucy Mack Smith. But that’s where it ends. Where are all those elusive faces and names of sisters and the individual, intimate stories of the lives they lived? They can be found in unreachable archives and the special collections at the B.Y.U. Library covered with the dust of unuse. The names and faces of women whose real life experiences parallel those of the men. Men whose bigger-than-life stories are told and retold as role models churchwide to our daughters as well as our sons. On this episode, we take on the remainder of King Follett from his internment in the Columbia, Missouri jail to his death in Nauvoo. He’s acquitted of his robbery charges, arriving in Quincy, Illinois in October 1839 in a completely overcrowded and destitute state. He works with the Mormon refugees to help build Commerce into Nauvoo, build public works projects, construct houses, staff on city committees, and a litany of other services. The Follett family become regular attendees of many active church leadership groups. Louisa Follett joins the Relief Society on its second meeting. Two of King and Louisa’s sons join important missions and the ranks of a Quorum of Seventies. King Follett donates his tithing of time to the Temple Building Committee in addition to being paid by the Temple Committee in vouchers for additional work on the Nauvoo Temple. He, like many others, exchanged his temple vouchers for goods at the Temple Store. Finally, we discuss King Follett’s untimely death at age 55 in March of 1844. He was a beloved member of the community with a funeral procession extending a mile and buried with Masonic honors. We briefly follow the lives of his surviving family after his death and read a bit from Louisa Follett’s small but consequential journal. Jo nominates James Arlington Bennet for his Vice-Presidential candidate, White-out Willard Richards drafts a letter to Bennet, notice is printed in the Nauvoo Neighbor, and a retraction is published the following week. A special conference is called to preach to 8,000 Mormons about politics, the campaign, and the Mormon expansionist agenda. Jo picks a few of his dissenters out of the crowd and grand-stands about them being enemies, preaching about how he will “use up” those who oppose the mission of the church. Construction on the Nauvoo Temple and tithing are emphasized. Bloody Brigham Young makes a speech about not filing legal complaints when wrongs are committed against you. An exploratory group is formed and armed to the teeth to venture into the wilds of Texas and Oregon for the next Mormon settlement and staging ground. Profile of anti-Mormon Thomas Sharp (Part 3 of 7)

I think Thomas Sharp should be the ultimate villain in Mormonism, but I'll bet most people don't know who he is.  In our next conversation with Brian Stutzman, we'll learn more about the man who incited a mob to kill the prophet Joseph Smith. https://youtu.be/4uhEG0wjhHY Brian:  Thomas Sharp came from a Methodist family.  In England, in the late 1700s, John and Charles Wesley started the Methodist movement....Thomas Sharp was 22 years old when he came to Warsaw in 1844 or 1840, rather, so he's a rather young man. He tries his hand at the newspaper business with a partner named James Gamble. They spent six months, about, down on the river at the foot of Main. Then they move their press and change the name from Western World to the Warsaw Signal and they go up into an unknown location up on Main Street.  Now some of the tour buses stop and point to building at 204 Main.  They say, "This is where Thomas Sharp published."  That building wasn't built till 1851, way after Thomas Sharp published there, but it was after the Mormon period. ... But the turning point and Ben A. Marshall wrote a paper called the Turning Point of Thomas Sharp. There's some discrepancy over some of the facts here. But when they set the cornerstone for the Nauvoo temple, in April six of 1841, Joseph Smith had a table up front for the dignitaries and some of the dignitaries, one of them was Chief Keokuk, from Iowa, who this town is named after, and he was up at the front table. He invited young Thomas Sharp, again, 22-23 years old to be up at the head table with him and they had this big feasts and a military parade and they set the cornerstone for the Nauvoo Temple. GT:  So at this time, Thomas is still friendly. Brian:  Yeah, neutral at best, neutral or friendly. Sometime after--now, people speculate that that day he turned against the church. There's another historian and she's kind of in my house with me and my wife. We've done some history, Brooke Lethar. She was at BYU. Now she's studying at the University of Utah, and she has found research that it was awhile later before, Sharp turned negative. So there was a time where he was friendly and that he turned negative. So he goes up there and he starts writing terrible things in his paper.  There was a term in in that area about Masons. If you were not a Mason, but you're referring to Mason's there was a term called Jack Mason. ... Thomas Sharp is sitting there, seeing this bloc-voting going on up Nauvoo, and the two main political parties at the time were Democrats and Whigs. He says to his fellow people, fellow residents, he says, we don't have a shot in heck of getting somebody elected unless we join together, put our differences aside, and maybe we can get somebody elected locally. So he and Aldrich, again, these are two guys stood trial, and the guy named William Roosevelt. William Roosevelt was the cousin to Teddy Roosevelt's father. They're living in Warsaw and they get together and they create this political party in 1841. It's called the anti-Mormon political party. That wasn't a mob. It wasn't hostile, at least at first, but it was a political party to try to outvote the Mormons. Well, in 1842, Thomas Sharp decides to run for a seat in the state legislature. Well, who was he was he opposed by?  The prophet's little brother, William Smith, and William Smith beats him. In 1844 when Joseph Smith was running for President Thomas Sharp talks about running for the United States Senate, and then he learns that Hyrum Smith, the prophet's brother was considering running for the same seat in the United States Senate and Sharp withdrew. Check out our conversation…. It is surprising that Thomas Sharp is not more well-known among Church members. He literally started the anti-Mormon political party! [paypal-donation] Welcome to Gospel Tangents, the best source for Mormon history, science, and theology.  I'm your host Rick Bennett.  Dr. Jonathan Stapley devotes an entire chapter in his book, The Power of Godliness, to baby blessings.  Given that baby blessings are not considered salvific, why spend so much time on that?  Jonathan says it was his favorite chapter of the book! https://youtu.be/CUOGrTkDnx0 Jonathan:  There's this exchange of letters between Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery and Peter Whitmer in Zion.  Whitmer is the ward clerk. He has a Book of Remembrance.  Book of Remembrance is the book that Adam creates. And so, he has this sacred document in which he is to inscribe the inheritance of Zion. And if you come to Zion, you receive an inheritance, that is your inheritance for time and eternity, while the earth shall stand and in eternity when it's renewed.  When babies are blessed, their name is written in the Book of Remembrance and they receive this inheritance.  They're essentially brought into this salvific community where salvation is no longer an individual affair.  But it's not really an individual affair in Mormonism ever.  But this explicitly communal salvation, in Zion that's just really remarkable and that Zion essentially fails.  The Zion project, burns, and the saints moved to Illinois. And we have the Nauvoo Temple liturgy and the cosmological priesthood that reorders the world and universe of Latter-day Saints.  We see the baby blessing becoming an annunciation of children's sealed position in the cosmological priesthood. Had you considered that?  Check out our other conversations with Jonathan. Dr. Jonathan Stapley says baby blessings are an "annunciation of children's sealed position in the cosmological priesthood." [paypal-donation] Yesterday was President Monson's funeral.  When an LDS President dies, the First Presidency is dissolved.  Have you ever wondered why that is the case?  Historian John Hamer and apostle Lachlan MacKay of the Community of Christ will talk about why that happens in the LDS Church.  It's a really interesting conversation as we discussion several succession claims. John:  One of the last acts that Joseph Smith does before going to Carthage is he had given another one of these special blessings to Joseph III and several of these where Joseph had been prophesied at one point or another that he would be in his father's role in being prophet, but he was what?  He was eleven? Lachlan:  Eleven or eleven and a half. John:  He's eleven, so ok.  He wasn't going to be the successor at that point.  What I argue, I think anyway, I think that the person who had the best claim at the point, in terms of both civil, and canon, which is to say church rules and law is Sidney Rigdon, who even though he's been a little on the outs, he is still actively campaigning as the vice-presidential candidate in Joseph Smith's U.S. presidential election.  So Joseph Smith then Sidney Rigdon; Sidney Rigdon is the only guy left in the First Presidency. Even though in the LDS tradition, there is this idea that the First Presidency dissolves, and then the senior most apostle always succeeds, the only reason that is the idea is because they didn't want to have Sidney Rigdon be in charge.  It doesn't say that in the Doctrine & Covenants or anything like that.  There's no canonical, there's no canon law that says anything of the kind.  The First Presidency had been a completely distinct [quorum] in the early church tradition from the Twelve. Lachlan:  There's nothing that says it dissolves. John: There's nothing that says it dissolves and also not like the First Presidency is just like three more of the Twelve or something like that.  It's a completely distinct [quorum.]  Anyway, so what I say is Sidney Rigdon is the last surviving member of the First Presidency and then according to the actual incorporation like we're talking about the Church's possession, William Marks had signed it over to Joseph Smith on behalf of the Church.  The Church is incorporated in the state of Illinois, and part of incorporation and the documents in Carthage, it says held by Joseph Smith as Trustee in Trust for the Church and my successors in the First Presidency. Because of that, when Brigham Young does take over, he doesn't create a new First Presidency; the Twelve just take over headquarters.  It's one of the reasons why he is not able to get title to these temples is because James Strang knows about that because he has a lot of these guys in his group.  They know about this incorporation ruling.  This is really complicated details, but anyway, part of the idea of it is he charges that since he is the successor to the First Presidency, he has organized a new First Presidency.  This doesn't in Brigham Young's church until 1847, so he's operating that way with the First Presidency, and so he says, “You don't have a First Presidency. I have title to the Nauvoo Temple.  You're trying to sell my temple.” GT:  James Strang created a First Presidency and said that should be the successor? John:  Yeah, he did that at that point.  But before that, I've got to dial it back.  The person who was the surviving member of the First Presidency then is Sidney Rigdon.  Sidney Rigdon gets outmaneuvered in this showdown between Brigham Young and Sidney Rigdon.  He gets kicked out of Nauvoo, or flees for his life and he goes back and reorganizes and creates a new headquarters of the church in Pittsburgh.  But at that point, he suffers one of these things that all kinds of schismatic Mormon Latter Day Saint heritage churches do which is, then they start asking themselves:  where did we go wrong? We will also talk about some of the other leaders who wanted to ...

[paypal-donation] In our next conversation, we'll talk about differences in temple worship between the LDS Church and the RLDS Church.  (Note:  The Community of Christ has been historically known as the RLDS Church.)  Community of Christ Apostle, Lachlan MacKay and John Hamer (a Seventy) discuss the differences in temple worship between the two churches, and how the temple has evolved. Lachlan:  Sure.  So Kirtland in the 1830s, it's a house for public worship with a strong emphasis on empowerment, both spiritually and intellectually.  Two-thirds of Kirtland Temple was classroom space.  You would worship in the temple on Sundays, and you would go to school six days a week.  Kirtland High School met on the third floor.  Students ranged in age from six through adults, so it was the center of their community life. My sense is that in Nauvoo the same was going to be true, but you did start to have to have, I believe, a receipt saying you were a tithe payer in order to gain access to the baptismal font, and they didn't welcome non-members in the temple in Nauvoo while they were performing ordinances, but it was still a public building.  That receipt, I think, is what many generations later would become the idea of a temple recommend. ... John:  This idea for the LDS tradition of having what constitutes temple work and everything like that, almost all of this is extremely different than what existed in Kirtland.  There's no font, like you say, in the Kirtland Temple.  That's something that begins in Nauvoo.  The same thing, the Endowment ceremony, and things like that is taking place after Joseph Smith had been exposed to Freemasonry and things like that so that also isn't taking place, the whole liturgy and things like that in Kirtland. I have a chart.  I'll give it to you so you can splice it in if you want for the videos, but essentially where you take the spaces that exist, you've taken Kirtland, like what Lach is telling you about, the spaces of worship, the space for learning, the space for order, the church offices and things like that, you can see where they have that same major portion of the space is devoted to that in Nauvoo, but then there's also the space for the baptism of the dead in the basement and there's a space for endowments in the attic. Then you go to Salt Lake, all of that is preserved so there's a big solemn assembly hall and things like that in the Salt Lake Temple.  There are the offices for the apostles and things like that, but then when you get to the little temples that are in the LDS tradition, which might be what most Mormons in the Utah tradition are exposed to, they don't have any of those things that are from the Kirtland period.  All they have is the basement and attic part of the Nauvoo Temple and that's their whole experience.  So they go and that's their temple experience.  They go to Kirtland and say, “What did these Reorganites do to the temple?  It's not even—it's so alien.”  That's what Kirtland is!  But anyway, we're each honoring different parts of the heritage. We'll also talk about baptism for the dead as well as vision of Elijah in 1836 in the Kirtland Temple.  It's going to be a very interesting conversation.  I hope you check it out (as well as part 1 of our conversation)! https://youtu.be/rLfMRzvEUUk [paypal-donation]

One of the Gospel Topics essays on polygamy produced by the church indicates that Joseph Smith married young women, one of “who[m] was sealed to Joseph several months before her 15th birthday.”  I talked to polygamy expert Dr. Brian Hales about these sealings.  What does he have to say about this? Brian:  There are two 14-year-olds.  The other 14-year-old was Nancy Maria Winchester.  We don't know anything about that relationship, when it happened.  She may have been 15; my bet is she was 14.  Helen Mar Kimball is the one 14-year-old.  For several reasons I don't believe that relationship was consummated, but Joseph gets accused of all kinds of crazy things.  People even call him a pedophile. Now a pedophile is someone who's interested in children under 11, which would not apply to Joseph in the wildest of rumors, but he was sealed to probably two 14-year-olds, and a 16-year-old. Brian indicated that these were non sexual marriages, and he discusses Helen some more. We can piece together from what Helen wrote, the sealing occurred, and after the sealing, Helen continued to go to dances and balls and socialize for the next several months until at one point Joseph stepped in and said, Look.  We don't want her doing this anymore. Later Helen said that she hated polygamy.  She wrote this down early on.  This was one of the early writings before she wrote her books defending it.  But the reason why she hated polygamy was not because of her own relationship with it, but because of how it affected her mother.  I argue that if she were having conjugal relations with Joseph and finding that to be undesirable, she might have actually used her relationship with Joseph as a reason for hating polygamy. I asked Brian why she wasn't sealed as a wife rather than as a child under the Law of Adoption. Do you know there were no adoptions performed during Joseph's lifetime.  The only adoptions that we have any record of occurred in the Nauvoo Temple and they occurred around, depending on your definition of an adoption, there's 205 or something.  A lot of these, I use the word adoption to mean a child is sealed to parents who they are not biologically related. What do you think of these marriages?  Do you agree that these sealings were likely non-sexual? (D&C 124: 28.) To "restore" it the Father needed to personally come to a Temple that He was required to be built within a limited time frame. The length of the time given to accomplish the building was not specified by a date certain. Instead the Lord said He would give to the Saints "sufficient time to build a house unto me." (D&C 124: 31.) In the time between January 1841 and the martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum Smith in June 1844, the Nauvoo Temple was not completed. The walls were only complete to the second floor. The absence of any date for "sufficient time" to build the Temple leaves that an open question. It does not matter which historic source you use there is no diary, letter, journal or talk which says that The Father or even Jesus Christ came to the Nauvoo Temple and "restored again the fulness of the priesthood" which He had previously taken away from the church. Most importantly, there are no claims made by any of the leaders of the church that the "fulness of the priesthood" was bestowed upon them by Jesus Christ or By the Father in the Nauvoo Temple. https://www.facebook.com/notes/mark-lichtenwalter/the-fullness-of-the-priesthood-restored-to-the-earth-by-god-the-father-to-his-wi/10156979915660344 www.TheKingdomofGodorNothing.com Call in Number 516-387-1641.
