The agency had been rumoured to be considering offers for some time. What was a little more surprising though was the buyer. Despite rumours that consultancy Accenture was in the frame, holding company Publicis Group emerged as the winner. It ran counter to the trend of holdcos in retreat and consolidating their number of agency brands. In today's audio-led conversation, Atomic 212 chairman Barry O'Brien and Publicis Group's ANZ CEO Michael Rebelo discuss with Tim Burrowes the rationale for the deal.O'Brien acknowledges the ups and downs of the agency's journey, including when Atomic's client, retail chain Dick Smith went into administration, leaving its agency potentially owing media companies millions of dollars.“When we first kicked off, Dick Smith went belly up and left $400-odd million of debt right around Australia.“As a young agency, we were left with a considerable amount of that. That was a pretty dark time.”The agency also faced a reputation crisis when Mumbrella revealed that former boss Jason Dooris had been cheating in award entries. Dooris eventually left the business. O'Brien says, dryly, “It was not a highlight.”Meanwhile, Rebelo explains the rationale for the acquisition at a time when many groups are trimming their rosters. Capabilities and client conflict are two of the factors. When he built a three year plan for his group in 2023, “acquisition of a media agency like Atomic was literally one of our top strategic priorities,” reveals Rebelo.“What we were looking at with Atomic was how can we supercharge what we've already got? What we like to curate and cultivate in the group are specialized weapons in terms of the agencies in how they can help our clients solve their marketing problems. And Atomic represented an independent agency with really sophisticated capabilities.”Rebelo, insists that unlike previous acquisition Match, which is these days folded in to Spark Foundry, Atomic will remain as its own brand. “Conflict and managing conflict is still a big part of the market and the industry. So we are fortunate to have those independent brands that can manage different agencies across the verticals. Having another media brand to take on and help us manage that is certainly a benefit to this.”Time to leave you to your Monday. What a wonderful day to talk about The Exorcist. This week Mike, Brian, and Stephen start our discussion on one of the foundational films in modern horror, 1973's The Exorcist. For the first half of our two parts on this title, your hosts share their initial reactions to this masterwork, as well as how our thoughts on the film have evolved as we've grown older. From there we take a deep dive into the history of the film, including a look at its architects, director William Friedken and writer William Peter Blatty. We explore the exorcism case that inspired Blatty to write his novel, and the challenges in adapting the film without “creating a commercial for the Catholic Church” in Friedken's view. We discuss the brilliant cast, Dick Smith's astonishing makeup and the standout locations. From there we talk about the “curse” of The Exorcist as well as the unconventional and unsafe methods Friedken often employed that put his performers in harm's way. Finally, we explore the cultural impact of The Exorcist on its release as well as its place in horror's pantheon more than fifty years later. It's one of our largest, most in-depth episodes to date, and its only the beginning.

The Penguin series on HBO and Max has been one of the most critically acclaimed comic book-based TV shows in years. Much of the praise has gone towards actors like Colin Farrell, who plays the classic Batman villain. But the makeup and prosthetics designer Mike Marino has been singled out for his innovative and striking design of the main character. Mike sculpted an entire head and body for The Penguin, a.k.a. Oz Cobb, that obscured most of Colin Farrell while also liberating the actor to inhabit a role he might otherwise not have been cast. Mike and I go deep into his creative process working with Farrell and the director/producer Matt Reeves on The Batman film and the spin-off show The Penguin. The Exorcist (1973)

Born To Watch - A Movie Podcast

When it comes to films that have left a lasting mark on the horror genre, few can rival the terrifying power of The Exorcist (1973). Directed by William Friedkin and adapted from William Peter Blatty's 1971 novel, The Exorcist shattered boundaries with its unflinching portrayal of demonic possession and the battle between good and evil. Released in December 1973, the film captivated audiences and sparked controversy for its graphic content and shocking themes. This review will explore why The Exorcist (1973) remains a pinnacle of horror cinema, from its groundbreaking storytelling to its cultural and cinematic significance.A Simple Story Elevated by Complex ThemesAt its core, The Exorcist (1973) tells a simple yet profoundly disturbing story. It revolves around the possession of a young girl, Regan MacNeil (played by Linda Blair), and the desperate efforts of her mother, Chris (Ellen Burstyn), to save her. The family's only hope rests with two priests, Father Karras (Jason Miller) and the seasoned exorcist, Father Merrin (Max von Sydow). While the premise seems straightforward—a child in peril, religious figures battling a supernatural force—the film digs deeper into themes of faith, guilt, and the fragility of human existence. One of the key elements that makes The Exorcist so unsettling is its exploration of faith, or rather, the loss of it. Father Karras is a man wracked by doubt. He's a priest who has lost his mother, a psychiatrist struggling to reconcile his beliefs with the suffering he sees in the world. His personal crisis mirrors the larger question the film asks: what do we do when confronted with something truly evil? This is the tension at the heart of The Exorcist, elevating the film from mere shock value to something far more existential and terrifying.Unforgettable PerformancesThe performances in The Exorcist (1973) are nothing short of iconic, particularly that of Linda Blair as the possessed Regan. Blair's transformation from a sweet, innocent child to a terrifying vessel for a demon is astonishing. It's a performance that pushes the limits of what was previously expected from child actors, and it's still regarded as one of the most chilling portrayals in horror history. Her physical and emotional range—enhanced by the groundbreaking makeup effects of Dick Smith—leaves a lasting impact. Every contorted expression every guttural sound that emerges from her during the possession sequences is haunting.Ellen Burstyn's portrayal of a desperate mother is equally powerful. Chris MacNeil's descent from a successful actress to a mother on the verge of breakdown is heart-wrenching. The film builds up her growing terror and helplessness as Regan worsens, creating a harrowing portrait of maternal despair.Jason Miller's conflicted Father Karras is a revelation. His nuanced performance of a man wrestling with his faith adds emotional depth to the film's supernatural elements. Meanwhile, Max von Sydow's Father Merrin is the stoic, wise counterpoint to Karras' inner turmoil. Although Merrin's character is more of a traditional hero, von Sydow brings gravitas and world-weariness to the role, making the final confrontation all the more gripping.Pushing the Boundaries of Special EffectsIn 1973, audiences had never seen anything quite like The Exorcist. The special effects, many of which were practical, broke new ground in horror filmmaking. From Regan's spider-walk down the stairs to the levitation scenes, the film's visual shocks have become legendary. The makeup that transforms Blair's face into something grotesque, the vomit spewing, the rotating head—these effects still hold up today and remain unsettling even in a world where digital effects dominate. But it's not just the visual effects that make The Exorcist so memorable. The sound design plays a crucial role in heightening the terror. The eerie soundscape, from the unnatural voices Regan speaks to, to the house's creaking, creates a sensory overload that gets under your skin. And who could forget Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells? While not initially composed for the film, the track has become synonymous with The Exorcist, its hypnotic rhythm forever tied to the creeping sense of dread the movie invokes.Cultural Impact and ControversyThe release of The Exorcist (1973) sparked widespread debate and controversy. Audiences were reportedly fainting, vomiting, and fleeing theatres in panic due to the intensity of the film. In fact, the film was banned in several countries and faced resistance from religious groups who considered it blasphemous. The stark depiction of exorcism and the visceral horrors it presented hit a nerve with the public. It challenged not just what could be shown on screen but how far filmmakers could push the boundaries of audience tolerance.Despite—or perhaps because of—its controversy, The Exorcist was a massive commercial success. It became the first horror film nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards, ultimately taking home two Oscars for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Sound. More importantly, it shifted the landscape of horror cinema. The film proved that horror could be more than just campy monster flicks or psychological thrillers; it could be raw, visceral, and deeply disturbing. It opened the door for a more sophisticated brand of horror, one that wasn't afraid to tackle profound themes alongside graphic imagery.Enduring LegacyWhat makes The Exorcist (1973) endure over fifty years later is not just its capacity to shock but its ability to ask timeless questions. The film doesn't merely present a battle between good and evil; it challenges viewers to confront their own beliefs about the nature of evil, faith, and redemption. This is why The Exorcist still resonates with audiences today—it forces us to consider the fragility of the human condition and the possibility that something incomprehensible, something truly terrifying, may lurk in the shadows. Moreover, The Exorcist set the bar for future horror films, influencing a generation of filmmakers. Its blend of psychological depth, religious horror, and disturbing imagery can be seen in countless horror classics that followed, from The Omen to Hereditary. The film also left its mark on pop culture, referencing Regan's possession and the infamous exorcism scenes becoming staples in parody, tribute, and analysis.Final ThoughtsThe Exorcist (1973) remains one of the most important and influential films in horror history. Its stellar performances, groundbreaking special effects, and thought-provoking themes make it more than just a scary movie—it's a cinematic experience that forces audiences to confront their deepest fears. Whether you've seen it once or a dozen times, The Exorcist never loses its power to horrify, disturb, and provoke. As a film that redefined the genre and pushed cinematic and cultural boundaries, it stands as a testament to what horror can achieve when it's done right. Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcasthttps://www.borntowatch.com.au/

(00:01) Golf Course Tee Time Tradition This chapter explores the importance of distance in golf, featuring insights from long drive champion Michael Michaelides. Michael shares his experience working at Bethpage, highlighting the unique tradition of golfers arriving the night before to secure tee times. He recounts the intimidating presence of his former boss, Dick Smith, and explains the logistics of securing a spot at Bethpage, from early morning shifts to the allocation of bakery tickets. The conversation emphasizes the enduring customs at Bethpage, including the requirement to walk the course and the limited availability of phone reservations. Michael's anecdotes offer a fascinating glimpse into the culture and history of one of golf's iconic locations. (13:46) Navigating the Challenging Golf Course This chapter explores the concept of truly enjoying a golf course and getting one's money's worth. We discuss how struggling through a tough course, losing numerous golf balls, and hacking out of rough areas may not equate to fun or value for some players. Instead, playing from the appropriate tees and focusing on personal achievements, like making pars or birdies, can offer a more rewarding experience. We also touch on the physical challenges of certain courses, specifically a tough 490-yard uphill hole known as "Cardiac Hill," and the importance of maintaining composure under such strenuous conditions. Lastly, we highlight the evolution of caddie programs at golf courses, enhancing the playing experience, and share personal preferences for carrying lighter bags to navigate difficult terrains. (23:11) Maximizing Golf Swing Power and Velocity This chapter addresses the complexities behind achieving optimal ball velocity in both baseball and golf. We explore the surprising phenomenon where attempting to throw or swing harder can actually reduce velocity. The conversation delves into the mechanics of using ground force effectively, the importance of attack angles, and the nuances of pressure shifts in the downswing. We compare the techniques of long drivers to regular golfers, highlighting how different body movements and equipment choices affect performance. Additionally, we discuss the physical demands and potential impacts on the body, offering insights into how long drivers manage to sustain their high-speed swings without incurring significant injuries. (32:06) Impact Bag Training for Golfers This chapter focuses on an impactful training drill shared by Sean "The Beast" Fister, a three-time world champion. We explore the mechanics and potential risks of the drill, which involves using a heavy aluminum bat and a heavy bag to ensure proper impact alignments and force transfer. Despite the intensity and risk of injury, the drill is highly effective for stress relief and skill enhancement. Jeff Smith then discusses an innovative adaptation to make the drill safer: using an inflatable ball inside an impact bag shell, allowing golfers to practice with reduced risk while still improving their impact force and alignment. This adaptation highlights a safer yet effective way to enhance golfing techniques without causing injury. (36:38) Impact Bag and Sponge Training This chapter explores the innovative techniques and adjustments I made to improve the application of force in golf swings. We discuss how I experimented with different materials like a deflated volleyball and car wash sponges to create a lightweight, yet effective, impact training tool. By tweaking the weight and positioning of these sponges, I found a way to help golfers feel the right amount of resistance at the moment of impact, enhancing their ball speed and overall performance. Additionally, I share insights from a memorable interaction with Sean, highlighting the importance of finding the right training aids to achieve the desired results in golf. (40:22) The Evolution of Golf Teaching This chapter focuses on the journey of an experienced teacher who transitioned from traditional methods of golf instruction to more dynamic, purpose-based drills. He recounts a meeting with an influential figure who provided guidance and support, emphasizing the value of mentorship. The discussion touches on the contrast between the rigid, line-drawing approach he initially encountered and his own athletic background, which informed his preference for a more fluid and dynamic style of coaching. He reflects on the evolution of golf instruction and coaching, highlighting how modern techniques now recognize golfers as athletes, utilizing drills that are more in tune with natural body movements and timing. This approach, he argues, is more effective and resonates better with students, contributing to their continuous improvement. (43:27) Long Drive Techniques and Tips This chapter explores the importance of safety in training techniques, emphasizing the use of sponges to prevent injuries. We discuss how certain methods, like using an aluminum bat on a heavy bag, may not be suitable for everyone and should be approached with caution. Additionally, we touch on the relationship between skills in long drive competitions and overall golf proficiency, highlighting how a background in golf can enhance performance in long drive events. Lastly, we encourage listeners to learn from experienced professionals to improve their own golf game.
