Send us a textToday's episode is my conversation about the 1928 film White Shadows in the South Seas. My friend Matthew Brady from the Warren Peace newsletter joins me to discuss the film and we talk about why this film was almost a shoe in for winning Best Cinematography at the 2nd Academy Awards, how interesting it was to be able to see some aspects of indigenous life on the South Pacific islands of around 100 years ago, and the cautionary tale that is this film. You can watch White Shadows in the South Seas on YouTube or purchase a copy for your collection and be sure to check out Matthew's newsletter.Other films mentioned in this episode include:Nanook of the North directed by Robert J. Jonathan is an ER doctor based in Philadelphia, trained in both internal medicine and pediatrics. His journey as a foodie began during medical school while dissecting cadavers, which sparked his fascination with learning how muscles correspond to various cuts of beef. He now runs the dinner series Anatomy Eats (@anatomyeats on all social media platforms), where he collaborates with chefs around the country to serve offal dishes. During these events, he discusses the anatomy and physiology of the parts being eaten, sometimes even dissecting organs as people dine. In his first book, "The Unseen Body," Jonathan addresses the 1971 US law banning the sale of animal lungs as human food. In 2023, he submitted an official petition to the USDA arguing for the overturn of this law, and he is currently awaiting their response. Jonathan is writing a new book based on Anatomy Eats, which will explore the intersection of anatomy and cuisine worldwide. The book aims to debunk many misconceptions about food that can be easily disproved with basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology. Some topics he plans to cover include whether eating testicles increases testosterone or masculinity, the real reason some cuts of meat are tougher than others, how foie gras relates to fatty liver disease, and the safety of consuming animal colons (which he confirmed through a visit to the Chitlin Fest in Salley, SC). Rather than focusing on the nutritional benefits of eating these body parts, Jonathan emphasizes the fascination of understanding that human bodies are composed of the same parts and tissues consumed from animals. He believes that comprehending this overlap enhances the intrigue of eating offal. While he considers every part of an animal healthy (unless it's actually toxic, like a polar bear's liver), his primary interest lies in exploring the anatomical and physiological aspects of these foods. The Flaherty Film Seminar is one of the nonfiction film world's most interesting events. Founded by Frances Flaherty in 1955 in honor of her late husband, Robert—the documentarian best known for Nanook of the North (1922)—the Seminar brings together scholars, artists, programmers, critics, and more to watch and intimately discuss a selection of works curated by rotating guest programmers. But here's the twist: none of the films are revealed to the audience in advance of the screenings, in accordance with a principle that Frances Flaherty described as “non-preconception”—an open-minded encounter with the unknown. Typically, the Seminar is held in Upstate New York, but this year's curators, Julian Ross and May Adadol Ingawanij, decided to host it in a new location—in Thailand, at the Thai Film Archive in Salaya. It's added a whole different dimension to the Flaherty experience, with audiences and films drawn primarily from Southeast Asia.  On today's episode, Film Comment Editor Devika Girish, who's been on the ground as a Fellow at the Seminar for the last week, invites May and Julian—as well as Thai Film Archive deputy director Kong Rithdee and Thai filmmaker Anocha Suwichakornpong—to discuss the making of this year's seminar. Their engaging conversation charts how the works of featured artists—Jumana Manna, Chikako Yamashiro, Riar Rizaldi, Ho Tzu Nyen, Saeed Taji Farouky, Korakrit Arunanondchai, and more—elucidate overarching themes of solidarity and communion.

In September of 1952, Orson Welles worked with the BBC for a portrait of early American director Robert Flaherty. Flaherty, who directed the first docu-drama film, Nanook of the North in 1922, had passed away the previous July. As Welles just mentioned, when he got to Hollywood in the late 1930s, he was fascinated by the early film people, and they were more than happy to share their stories with the then-Boy Wonder. In April of 1953 the BBC hired Welles to read one hour of poetry from Walt Whitman's “Song of Myself.” The next month the Italian comedy Man, Beast and Virtue debuted, in which Welles co-starred. From September 7th into October, Welles was involved with Ballet de Paris at the Stoll Theatre in London for a production of The Lady in the Ice. In October the production moved to Paris. Welles directed, wrote the libretto and was the ballet's costume and set designer. He later told Peter Bogdonovich, “It was very successful in London, and only moderately so in Paris, where it was very badly lit — as everything always is in Paris. The plot is: a girl's been found, like dinosaurs have been found, in a block of ice. And she's on display in a sort of carnival. A young man falls in love with her, and his love melts the ice. And when she kisses him, he turns to ice. A little parable for our times.” It would be the only ballet Orson Welles' ever directed. In late September of 1953 Broadcasting Magazine reported that Harry Alan Towers had sold shows to both ABC and NBC for the fall. ABC would welcome Horatio Hornblower back for a second season, starring Michael Redgrave. Meanwhile on NBC, a new half-hour anthology program starring Sir Lawrence Olivier called Theatre Royal would take to the air. The program debuted on October 4th, 1953 with Orson Welles starring in an adaptation of Alexander Pushkin's “The Queen of Spades.” Pushkin wrote “The Queen of Spades” in the fall of 1833. It's a short story about how human greed can lead to madness. Theatre Royal was developed to capitalize on Lawrence Olivier's name. At the time the program launched, Olivier and then-wife Vivian Leigh were getting set to appear in Terence Rattigan's comedy, The Sleeping Prince in the West End. The play would run for eight months. It made Olivier temporarily unable to star in his own program. Many fine actors of the British stage and screen were involved in individual episodes of Theatre Royal, like Robert Morley, Harry Andrews, Muriel Forbes, and Daphne Maddox. The music was credited to Sidney Torch. Once Sir Lawrence Olivier could no longer appear, Sir Ralph Richardson took over as host of Theatre Royal. Selected episodes were repeated, with a different series opening and closing on ABC Mystery Time in the late 1950s. The show remained in active syndication in the U.S. into the 1970s. Welles briefly returned to America to make his first appearance on TV, starring in the Omnibus presentation of King Lear, broadcast live on CBS on October 18th, 1953. It was directed by Peter Brook, and co-starred Natasha Parry, Beatrice Straight and Arnold Moss.

Like the Documentary Now! spoof, we're really more interested in our protagonist Nanook (Allakariallak) than the admittedly-groundbreaking documentarian Robert J. Flaherty.  And sure, it's obviously staged.  But our survivalist hero sure knows how to use the hell out of a walrus tusk knife.  It's mesmerizing. *Come support the podcast and get yourself or someone you love a random gift at our merch store.  T-shirts, hoodies, mugs, stickers, and more! Uh oh. It's a movie based on a play. Can the screen presences of Hollywood legends Sydney Poitier and Ruby Dee possibly transcend this stage-to-screen adaptation that only adds a couple of quick cut-away scenes of a single alternative setting to an otherwise one-room story? Well… yes. Pretty easily, it turns out.   If you'd like to watch ahead for next week's film, we will be discussing and reviewing Robert Flaherty's Nanook of the North (1922).

In Inuit mythology, Nanook was the leader of bears, and he would punish hunters who violated taboos. He was also known to bless hunters who were worthy of his blessings. The origins of Nanook can be traced back to the Innuit mythology. He is regarded as a patron of hunters who have the opportunity to decide who among them should be granted his blessings. The Inuit are an indigenous group that can be found in various regions such as Greenland, Alaska, and Northern Canada. The myth of the Nanook originated in these areas.According to the myth, Nanook was able to look like a human being due to the features of polar bears, such as their long fingers and their ability to stand upright. This led some of the tribes of the Inuit to believe that they were the descendants of bears.Read more at https://mythlok.com/nanook/

The North has been a blank, snowy canvas for our best and worst fantasies for thousands of years, home to biting winds, sea unicorns, fearsome Vikings, and even a wintry Atlantis. And it is also home, of course, to Indigenous communities, whose existence and culture could be inconvenient to myths of Aryan purity. Historian Bernd Brunner explores this curiosity cabinet of a region in his new book, Extreme North, translated by Jefferson Chase. Brunner argues that the North was as much invented as it was discovered by the European explorers, colonists, and armchair enthusiasts who ventured there. Encounters with the cultures of the North would inspire epic storytellers (Tolkien, Wagner), grifters (James Macpherson and his Poems of Ossian), racists (Hitler), and countless other complicated figures (Franz Boas, Nanook of the North). Also, Niamh manages to talk about Icelandic sagas for a bit because fae is extremely that bitch. We then talk about Connor's non-anime thing, The Commercial Album by the Residents. We talk a bit about trying to engage with music even when it doesn't come to you quickly, the history of the Residents as a band and art collective, the racist ethnography of Nanook of the North, the tension between conceptual foundation for an album and the actual experiential quality of listening to an album, Niamh being a bit of an asshole, and the possible influence that the Residents might have had on music that came after. After that, we discuss Niamh's non-anime thing, Attack of the Friday Monsters! A Tokyo Tale, but then kinda just be bummers about how neither of us can identify with this sweet and idyllic portrayal of childhood, but also the ways this game still rings true to some of our experiences with media and card games as kids.
