Amy M. Pollack - Coming of Age Book Series by a Retired Teacher and Grandparent: The Adventures of Jelly Bean & The Further Adventures of Jelly Bean. This is episode 635 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. Amy Meislin Pollack was a teacher for over four decades, raised three children, and loves to play with her seven grandchildren. From her own childhood to the classroom and as a parent and grandparent, she is perfectly positioned to pen her coming-of-age book series. The Adventures of Jelly Bean, followed by The Further Adventures of Jelly Bean, first came into being when the author's fourth-grade teacher used to ask her to get up in front of the class and tell the stories about this character she would make up as she went along. Several years later she started writing these stories down and would work on them periodically in any free time she had during her teaching career and raising her three children. Now retired from a 40-year career in teaching - spanning a wide range of subjects and grade levels - she has embarked on a lively writing career. The silver lining of the Covid pandemic for Pollack was that she was more or less forced, after approximately 60 years, to finish her Jelly Bean books. Her books are about a young girl whose life is always changing and how she adapts to these changes. She tries to work out relationships with her friends, her parents, her older brothers, her uncle. Her parents do not want her best friend, who is of mixed race, to visit. Another friend is anorexic. One brother drops out of school. A grandparent dies. Pollack earned a BA in English from Goucher College in Baltimore and received her Master's in English from University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education. She was certified as a secondary education and reading specialist for grades K-12 and earned a special education teaching degree from NYU, allowing her to teach disabled students. For six years she was a professor of writing, and a teacher in the tutoring center at Montclair State University in NJ. She lives in central New Jersey with her husband and their dog named Bunny. For more information, please see her website, www.amypollack.com. About The Adventures of Jelly Bean: What if the start to your day was falling into the toilet, which caused you to miss your carpool, that in turn caused you to get to school late, that ultimately caused you to miss getting one of the decent parts in the upcoming Thanksgiving play? That is exactly what happens to fourth-grader Jelly. Bean on the day we first meet her. Things only go downhill from there and no one at home seems to have much time for her. Except Roger-Over, her beloved dog. About The Further Adventures of Jelly Bean: Jelly Bean in the continuation of her adventures as she seeks solutions to the challenges that confronted her in book 1. Michael, her oldest brother, has dropped out of school and joined the Marines, which usurps much of her parents' attention. Kylie, the new girl in school, faces a medical emergency. And Jelly Bean is still forbidden from going to her best friend's house. She has to decide how to deal with these dilemmas and more. Along the way she learns about love, death, pain, relationships, the difference between right and wrong and the value of friendship. See the world through the eyes of this forthright fourth grader as she discovers two truths about life - that it is always complicated, and always changing. Awesome conversation! Cool books! Today With Amy Baradell and Amy Meinecke: Welcome to Window Treatments for Profit! Listen in today as I speak with two great ladies who have created a wonderful partnership over the years, Amy Baradell and Amy Meinecke. They met in 2003 through the High Point Chapter of the WCAA. At that time, they each had their own window treatment business. In July 2009 they merged their businesses to form Window Works Studio, Inc. In today's episode they will share with us how their journey started, what are some of the most valuable things they have learned about a partnership, and of course how they overcome difficult situations as a team. More About Amy Baradell and Amy Meinecke: Amy Baradell and Amy Meinecke met in 2003 through the High Point Chapter of the WCAA. At that time, they each had their own window treatment business. In July 2009 they merged their businesses to form Window Works Studio, Inc. Amy Meinecke's first career was a Registered Nurse. She worked in Critical Care for 10 years and then in a local Cardiology office for 6 years. Her mother-in-law taught her how to sew when she was pregnant with her first child. After that, she took classes, learning through practice. Growing up, she wanted to be a Nurse or an Interior Designer. In 2000, after many years of Nursing, she decided to fulfill her other dream and started her own business creating custom window treatments. Her home based business quickly grew. She was the founder of the High Point Chapter of the WCAA. She worked from her home until 2009 when she merged her business with Amy Baradell, creating Window Works Studio, Inc. Amy M. loves working with clients and enjoys getting to know them through the design process. She has worked with a wide variety of clients and a wide range of budgets. She has experience designing and making custom window treatments, bedding, pillows, cushions, and slipcovers. She has been married for 34 years and still enjoys spending time with her husband! They enjoy time with their grown children, extended family and friends. About once a month they get together with a group of long time friends to play Bunco. Saturday night is still “Date Night” for her and her husband. She loves to be outside, has been an avid runner and has recently taken up biking. She has quite a green thumb with both flowers and vegetables. A huge supporter of Habitat for Humanity, she has organized two women only builds over the past few years. This fall she is organizing Habitat's main fundraising event that will take place on September 22, 2022. Amy Baradell began sewing at a young age. Her first “project”, at the age of five was a pillow for her grandfather who had suffered a stroke. In 1983 she obtained a bachelor's degree in clothing and textiles from UNC-Greensboro. In 1987 she began her own business, fabricating custom window treatments for designers in Charleston, SC. Having just had her first baby, she often brought him along for her measuring appointments. Her business was home based until 2003 when she purchased the space where Window Works Studio is currently located. Through the years Amy B has worked with homeowners, interior designers, and furniture showrooms. She has designed dance costumes, historical costumes, weddings gowns, custom window treatments, bedding, and slipcovers. She enjoys spending time with her husband. They married in 2018 after being introduced by Amy Meinecke. They share a love for running and music. They have four grown children between them and two grandchildren whom they enjoy traveling to see. Amy can be found hiking, running, cooking, and trying new local restaurants. She is serving this year as president of WPF, Women's Professional Forum. It is an organization formed in the 70's to encourage, support, and educate professional women. She and her husband are members of Hope Chapel in Greensboro and enjoy serving the community with them. Window Works Studio, Inc. has grown in many ways over the past 13 years. When Amy and Amy began, they were both fabricating, consulting, and designing. Fairly quickly they realized that they would be more efficient if they divided the duties. Amy Meinecke's focus is sales to retail clients, designing, marketing, and keeping up with the numbers. She also trains design consultants. Amy Baradell's focus is providing service to interior designers, managing the workroom team, designing, and fabrication. She also provides training for our fabricators. In 2015 they were able to purchase the unit next to their original space, bringing the square footage from 1600 to almost 3000 square feet. In the summer of 2020, during COVID, they upfitted the space, creating a larger workroom, a fabric sample room and a showroom. They have six seamstresses, an office assistant and have just hired a second design consultant. Through the years they have invested in business coaching, attending conferences, and most recently took Vita's class at LuAnn University. Their goal is to continue to grow, document their systems, and have a saleable business in the near future. For our first episode of 2023 we are excited to be joined by CMU freshman Luciana Alvarado Reid who also just so happens to be the first Olympic gymnast ever for Costa Rica! She turned a lot of heads in Tokyo with her Black Lives Matter tribute at the end of her floor routine and is already looking to be a big asset to the CMU team this season. So this week's episode is different from anything we've ever done for the podcast to date. It's not quite a fully brewed episode, but it's also not one of our lightroasts either. My guest this week is…well, me. Now don't worry, I relinquished my hosting rights to a dear friend, so I promise this won't sound like some experimental one-man-play where I interview myself. And in fact, it was this same friend who nudged me to give listeners a peek behind the curtain that agreed to stand in as our host. So for this week's episode I hope you'll join me and Amy Stewart for a conversation about some of the larger things I've experienced over the course of 2022, including one of the biggest cases of my career. I can't say these will be a regular occurrence moving forward, but I'll admit it was a little refreshing to hand over the reins. On top of jury-trial-filled year, Amy and I discuss transitioning into different stages of leadership, what juries are expecting in our second digital age, and what the future holds for yours truly.Enjoy the show!
