In today's episode, Jordan joins us to talk about those leaders that can be viewed as abrasive, harsh, and maybe even bullies. He explains how he uses the ethos of the Navy Seals to complete the full picture of the workplace warrior, of which these types of people usually have an incomplete view. We examine the four types of warriors outlined in Jordan's book, some of the positions more likely to be taken as abrasive regardless of industry, and the importance of responding to your perceived experience in a healthy way. We also look at ways in which social media may be playing a part in fostering abrasiveness, like dehumanizing our interactions and lowering our tolerance for discomfort. Jordan shares with us the importance of using the proper framework when communicating, especially when the interaction is not face-to-face, as well as an excellent example of giving negative feedback in a compassionate way. We discuss compassion vs sympathy, learning to speak the language of those you are leading, and how to evaluate the success of your interactions. Lastly, we talk about how important it is to have a way to destress, giving examples of useful apps or other technology and methods. In this episode you will hear: The four types of workplace warriors The role of social media in regards to abrasive, aggressive behavior Learning to communicate effectively Recommendations for mindfulness apps to destress and meditate Actionable tips for giving negative feedback Jordan Goldrich is a Master Corporate Executive Coach, Certified Stakeholder Centered Coach, and Professional Certified Coach who partners with leaders and executives to achieve business results while developing their organizations, their reports, and their own leadership skills. Jordan is co-author of the Amazon best seller, Workplace Warrior: People Skills For the No-BullShit Executive. In this episode, Jordan discussed: The challenge of being a target vs. a victim Applying the concept of “blending with force” in the soft martial arts. How to separate your self-esteem from how others speak to you Understanding how others are wired Appreciating workplace warriors and cultivating compassion Key Takeaways After making a point, giving information, or making a suggestion, ask “what am I missing?” and “why won't this work?” Especially do that if you're talking to people that are lower on the hierarchy. They know information and data that you don't have. Separate how you feel about yourself, meaning your self esteem, from how others treat you and talk to you. This requires knowing and managing your vulnerabilities and strengths so that you can remain calm, confident, and in control when someone throws psychological darts or shoots psychological arrows at you. Understand how the brain of the person who's being disrespectful or difficult is wired. Most abrasive CEOs or executives do not intend to hurt people. Often, they develop a communication style that's developed by their culture or other influences. Appreciate people's warrior spirit because many of their traits that are experienced as negative comes from their desire to succeed, to lead well, and drive results. Cultivate compassion for difficult people, even though you don't think they don't deserve it. “My goal is to react in a way that disarms them, supports them, and helps them save face. I can only do that when I'm feeling confident enough to separate what they're saying from how they're saying it and to keep open the idea that they might have a good point if I can keep myself from being triggered to attack back or withdraw.” — Jordan Goldrich Connect with Jordan: For executives wanting a complimentary executive coaching conversation: jordan@jordangoldrich.com Website: www.workplacewarriorinc.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/jordangoldrich1 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jordan.goldrich Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jordangoldrich/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jgoldrich/

About LaTonya Jackson: LaTonya Jackson is Vice President of Services & Operations at Media Partners Corporation which provides best-in-class training content, technology, tools, and services to help organizations elevate workplace behaviors and culture. She is a 4-time author whose latest book is called 5 Blinders to Seeing Color that was released in 2020. She was previously Human Resources Director for Walmart. Dr. Jackson got her Doctor of Education at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. In this episode, Jordan and Latonya discuss: Responding to racism and inequality The Five Blinders to Seeing Color Shame and blame versus awareness and action Filling people's glass - seeing others with value Key Takeaways It's so much better and easier to love everybody, treat them like humans and respect them as opposed to focusing on what's different about them. We'll be able to solve problems together more effectively if we have that in common. Anxiety and Uncertainty, Egocentrism, Power, Ignorance and Immaturity are the Five Blinders. Self-awareness of one's biases will lead to action and healthy change - it's not about blame and shame. It's about self-reflection and being honest with oneself. Take a moment, open your eyes to the world's issues and see how you can brighten up someone's day or make them feel valued and important. “Watch the intention, because the impact is that you create an environment where microaggressions may be a norm, an environment that's not respectful and not inclusive. On the flip side, don't be aggressive or attack people who are asking questions because that's when we lose the opportunity to educate.” — LaTonya Jackson Want to join the “Fill the Glass” training for free? About Gregg Ward: He was a professional actor, writer, director and producer in New York and in London. He was also a trainer in the New York City Police Department using live theater in helping police handle difficult situations that they encounter. He was also a freelance journalist on an assignment for BBC in the United Kingdom. Now, he serves as a speaker, consultant, trainer and executive coach for global corporations and government on respect, emotional intelligence, and cultural transformation. He's also the author of the award-winning, best-selling business fable, “The Respectful Leader”. He's the founder and executive director of the Center For Respectful Leadership. He's also a little league umpire in his spare time. In this episode, Jordan and Gregg discuss: The broader and feeling meaning of “diversity” - talking about Diversity, Equity and Inclusion as a white guy. Humanity's tendency of simplifying everything into binary systems What role does respect play in our lives and what does it mean to be a “respectful leader” - the Golden Rule and the Platinum Rule Earning someone's respect versus earning someone's trust - and how you can earn both at the same time. Developing respectful directness and personal resilience Key Takeaways There's more to diversity than just race - there's diversity of opinion, experience, knowledge, expertise, skills and nationality. Some things can't be simplified into binary systems. There's a whole spectrum of diversity in life and failing to recognize that is neither honest nor accurate. When a boss says “you need to earn my respect”, what happens is that the subordinate actually loses respect for the boss. People don't always want to be treated the way you want to be treated and so instead, you should treat others the way they want to be treated. Respect people, respect yourself, and you'll do okay. “If we have a level of respect for each other, then it's very likely that we're gonna work together just fine… Treat someone with respect no matter who they are.” — Gregg Ward Get the complimentary guide: How To Select An Executive Coach at www.selectcoach.workplacewarrior.com Get the Am I Abrasive Self Test at abrasive.workplacewarrior.com Get Gregg's Book for Free when you register at centerforrespectfulleadership.org and mention Workplace Warrior! Hear a unique perspective about executives who are perceived as abrasive and who sometimes get called names like bully and jerk. Today's podcast is a recording of an interview Jordan did on WorldatWork's Work in Progress podcast several months ago. The hosts, Charles Epstein and Tom Alexander asked really good questions and we had a very deep conversation. There is some (not much) explicit language in the conversation. In this episode, Jordan, Tom, and Charles discuss: Most authors and speakers call executives who are experienced as abrasive demeaning names like bully and jerk because they want them to be more respectful. (Ironic?) No-BS is intended to be a respectful description of these leaders. Most No-BS leaders have a “warrior spirit” which is critical for success in our VUCA environment. There are four types of NO-BS Executive: Warrior, Scientist, Abrasive, and Bully. Key Takeaways: Most No-BS executives do not want to hurt people. The national, regional, ethnic, racial and family culture of the listener is one of the key factors in whether an executive is experienced as respectful or disrespectful. For many, their self-esteem is tied to some combination of winning, achieving and serving. Many results driven executives believe the pressure they get to change their style is politically correct BS. They are successful if they can find an authentic reason to change. Jordan's mission is to help his clients drive results without damaging relationships. He shares his journey from being set up for failure in a company to coaching leaders to focus on what they can control. Don't miss these Highlights: Discover the four different types of no bull executives; the warrior, the scientist, the abrasive, and the bully The importance of being reflective on people's communication styles and the contexts of the communication Working within the new paradigm of working from home and communicating online Weaving between extraversion and introversion in order to overcome resistance The purpose of “Cultivating Compassion for People Your Brain is Telling You Don't Deserve it” About the Guest: Jordan Goldrich partners with senior executives who have an uncommon desire for results, who take charge, lead their teams and accomplish the mission. He believes they possess the "warrior spirit" that is critical for success in our volatile, complex environment. Sometimes, they are perceived as abrasive and occasionally called names like bully. Jordan helps them be completely authentic and fulfill their mission while they drive results without damaging relationships®. Most of these executives do not want to hurt people. Many times, they come from a national, ethnic or family culture that is more direct than that of the people who perceive them as abrasive. And, their drive for success may be perceived as disrespectful. Jordan challenges them to adopt the commitments in the Ethos of the Navy SEALs. These include accomplishing the mission and never being out of the fight. They also include leading by example, and placing the welfare and security of others before their own. https://www.workplacewarrior.com/ (https://www.workplacewarrior.com/) About the Host: Duff Gardner is an award-winning 7-figure marketer, startup founder and digital producer. Different leaders have different leadership styles. Some of the most driven and effective executives can sometimes strike people in the workplace as abrasive and disrespectful. They might be called bullies, jerks, and other pretty names. Most of the time, however, these leaders are merely doing what they think is best for the company. How can we help these leaders reflect on their leadership and communication styles and adopt something that promotes a more harmonious relationship with workers? This is the field of expertise of Jordan Goldrich, the co-author of Workplace Warrior: People Skills for the No-Bullshit Executive. With a 35-year experience as a chief operations officer, master corporate executive coach, professional certified coach, and licensed clinical social worker, he specializes in helping leaders achieve results while developing themselves and their relationship with their teams. Jordan shares some tips on how to do this as he joins David Adelson on the show. Don't miss out on his giveaway – The Battle Plan, a 61-page excerpt from Workplace Warrior.Love the show?
