Dr. Amaal Starling: Migraine News and New Treatment

Critically Speaking

In this episode, Therese Markow and Dr. Amaal Starling discuss the prevalence and impact of migraines, affecting approximately 1 billion people worldwide. Dr. Starling highlights the genetic and hormonal factors and discusses the different subtypes of migraines. They delve into the importance of talking to your doctor or seeing a headache specialist if you are experiencing headaches and migraines, as well as the economic burden of migraines in the US. Finally, they discuss exciting new treatment options, ones that have been developed over the last decade.    Key Takeaways: There is a lot of stigma around people with migraines. Women with migraines and pain conditions are disproportionately stigmatized.  1 in 5 women, 1 in 11 children, and 1 in 16 men are affected by migraines - an average of 1 in 7 worldwide.  Different people will experience migraines and migraine treatment differently. They all also have different triggers, though some are more common, such as red wine, nitrates, and caffeine. Many new migraine treatment options are not covered, either immediately or at all, by insurance providers. Colic in infants appears to be associated with increased risk of adult migraine.   "There is still a lot to learn about the genetics of migraines. Genetics is a strong factor in who is going to have migraines versus not, but there are also a lot of other external and internal factors." —  Dr. Amaal Starling   Episode References:  American Migraine Foundation: https://americanmigrainefoundation.org/    Connect with Dr. Amaal Starling: Professional Bio: https://www.mayo.edu/research/faculty/starling-amaal-j-m-d/bio-20147052  LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/amaal-starling-md-fahs-faan-085b58a3    Connect with Therese: Website: www.criticallyspeaking.net Threads: @critically_speaking Email: theresemarkow@criticallyspeaking.net   Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. Richard Kirk: Necropolitics and inequality

In this episode, Therese Markow and Richard Kirk discuss the rise of inequality and homelessness, highlighting the lack of access to healthcare and resources for marginalized populations. They delve into the myth of trickle-down wealth and the downsides of gentrification. Richard also discusses the impact of large projects, such as stadiums, which increase property values and rents, exacerbating homelessness. He emphasizes the need for better regulations and policies to address these issues.     Key Takeaways: There is no adequate tracking of the fates of people displaced by gentrification, large-scale projects, and other circumstances.  Gentrification sometimes starts informally with young professionals, artists, or students moving into an affordable area with new businesses following. Other times, it is intentional with cities and developers targeting an area for development, but this is often done without protections for those original community members.  People in displaced communities often don't have the knowledge and energy, due to the roadblocks placed by those in charge and the need to work, in order to fight back against the gentrification and aggressive acquisition of their property.  Since the 1970s, the government has stepped back from providing affordable housing and robust social safety nets, prioritizing private investment and large development projects.   "It's really, really hard to combat something that is a global phenomenon without major reforms at the federal level. But elections at every scale matter, and voting still matters." —  Richard Kirk   Episode References:  SAJE - https://www.saje.net/  Necropolitics by Achille Mbembe: https://muse.jhu.edu/article/39984/summary  Neoliberal necropolitics and the global competition for urban dominance by Richard Kirk - https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0016718524001684?via%3Dihub    Connect with Richard Kirk: Professional Bio: https://geog.ucla.edu/person/richard-kirk/  LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/richard-kirk-49110024a    Connect with Therese: Website: www.criticallyspeaking.net Threads: @critically_speaking Email: theresemarkow@criticallyspeaking.net   Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. Chris Purser, a Ninja-powered agent from the beautiful city of Asheville, North Carolina, joins host Eric Thompson to share the story of his incredible success and pull back the curtain on a powerful strategy for getting a stalled listing sold. Chris details his journey from being a brand-new agent with no business to closing nearly $4 million in a single week, attributing his rapid growth to the Ninja system and dedicated coaching. The main event, however, is a deep dive into the “seller's offer,” also known as the “reverse offer.” Eric and Chris walk through a real-life case study of a luxury property that had been on the market for months with dwindling activity. Chris explains how he identified a motivated seller and an interested - but hesitant - buyer and used the seller's offer strategy to break the stalemate. He provides a step-by-step account of how he presented the concept to his clients, communicated with the buyer's agent, and used standard paperwork to get the ball rolling. Listen in for valuable insights into this creative tactic that can restart a conversation, give buyers a tangible starting point, and ultimately move a challenging property to the closing table. Episode Highlights: A seller's offer is a proactive strategy to engage a hesitant but interested buyer. Use this tactic when a listing is stalled, sellers are motivated, and a specific buyer is “kicking the tires” but won't make an offer. Present the strategy to your sellers as a creative, outside-the-box way to “move the needle.” The process uses the same standard offer paperwork you would use for a buyer-initiated offer, just with the seller initiating and signing first. This approach removes the buyer's fear of offending the seller with a low offer and provides a concrete starting point for negotiations. Clear communication with your broker, your seller, and the other agent is essential for success. This strategy can create a sense of urgency for other potential buyers by letting them know an offer is in play. Key Takeaways: "There had to be something that needed to be thought of outside the box to try to figure out how can we get this buyer off the fence and make a decision." "The explanation that we gave was, ‘Let's try to do something to try to get them to move the needle.'" "There was from the buyer an appreciation for us doing that, which was not something that I thought that would have happened, to be quite honest." "It did start a conversation that probably wouldn't have happened had we not gone ahead and made a reverse offer." This episode of the Rich Mind Podcast is a candid conversation about personal health, nutrition, and navigating the overwhelming world of supplements and dietary advice. Randy and Greg share their individual health journeys, discussing the different approaches they take—from keto to plant-based diets—and the daily routines they use to optimize their well-being. They tackle the challenge of conflicting information online, emphasizing the importance of finding credible sources like doctors and individuals with real-life transformation stories, rather than just social media influencers. This discussion serves as a practical guide to becoming your own "guinea pig," testing what resonates with you, and building sustainable habits for long-term health, all while acknowledging that the journey is never perfect.   Key Takeaways: There is no one-size-fits-all approach to health; what works for one person may not work for another. It's about finding what resonates with you. Be cautious of where you get your health information. Prioritize credentialed doctors and genuine success stories over social media influencers. The journey to optimal health is not about perfection, but about consistency and getting back on track after a "bad" choice. Chronic diseases often develop over decades due to the compounding effect of bad habits. Small, consistent, positive changes are key to prevention. A structured morning and night routine, including practices like journaling and hydration, can be foundational to good health. Technology, especially AI, can be a powerful tool for self-education and learning about health and nutrition. Long-term health is not just about living longer, but about increasing your "healthspan"—the number of healthy, active years you have.   Questions Answered in This Episode: How do you navigate the conflicting health and nutrition advice online? What's the difference between a keto and a plant-based diet, and how do you choose what's right for you? How can you become more in-tune with your body to know what foods make you feel good or bad? What are some simple, foundational habits for a healthy morning routine? How can you overcome the mental battle of making healthy food choices when faced with temptation? What are some of the key supplements to consider for daily health? (e.g., Vitamin D3/K2, Omega-3s) How is emerging technology expected to impact human longevity and "healthspan"? Why is it more important to focus on long-term health habits rather than quick fixes?   Key People, Concepts, & Terms: People: Randy Wilson, Greg Junge, Gary Brecka, Ian Clark. In this deeply personal solo episode, Emma jumps on the mic while driving (hands-free and at a modest 4 mph!) to reflect on her emotional journey after attending the recent "Go First" event. Emma opens up about showing up “feeling pretty crap” amidst pausing her own upcoming event due to personal needs. She shares the realness of disappointment, the mind chatter that can creep in, and the universal pressure entrepreneurs and visionaries put on themselves—especially when making bold, unconventional decisions. What Emma Covers in This Episode: Raw Reflections: Entering an industry event while processing her own setbacks, fighting off the feeling of letting people down, and the magic that happens when you find your people who truly get you. The Power of Community: How reconnecting with her “girls,” listeners, and new connections at the event instantly shifted her energy and reminded her why she does what she does. "Pedestaling" Others: Emma explores her experience of unconsciously putting others on pedestals, the pressure that brings, and how she moved past it to embrace her own path and vision. When Events Aren't ‘Perfect': Why it was a good thing the Go First event didn't meet her impossibly high expectations and how it helped recalibrate her perspective and nervous system. Evolution in Real Time: Powerful conversations with fellow attendees (including energy healers and psychics!) offering insight and encouragement for Emma to embrace change, dream even bigger, and plan her event for April. Big, Bold Visions: The expansion of her event concept, fresh inspiration for her podcast, exciting guest announcements, and a deeper commitment to her rebellious movement. Giving Yourself Permission: The critical importance of flexibility, detachment, and giving yourself permission to pause or pivot when things aren't aligned. Emma drops some serious truth bombs about leadership, bravery, and redefining success on your own terms. Embracing Change: How pausing her event cracked open new and better opportunities, brought a doubled vision, and inspired changes in her membership (aka her “movement”). Invitation to Listeners: If you're feeling out of alignment, forced, or less than lit-up, Emma gives you direct permission to pause, pivot, and claim what you truly want and reach out for community and support. Key Takeaways: There's no one “right” way to do things—your vision matters. Pausing or changing plans is not failure. It's leadership. True success comes from being fluid, flexible, and fiercely true to yourself. Surround yourself with people who see, celebrate, and support you. If it's not lighting you up, it's time to change course. In this episode of the Wildly Successful Law Firm podcast, Nermin Jasani demystifies legal advertising—from Facebook and Instagram to Google PPC, YouTube, TikTok, TV, and radio. She breaks down what works (and what doesn't) for different types of law, why ad success is about more than just spending money, and how to set yourself up for real results. Whether you're new to ads or rethinking your current approach, Nermin shares actionable advice on tracking results, following up with leads, and choosing the strategy that actually makes sense for your practice.Key Takeaways:There are many advertising platforms, but not all are suitable for every legal practice area.High-volume practices like personal injury can benefit from TV and radio ads, but they require significant investment and robust intake systems.Social media ads (Facebook, Instagram) can work for family, estate, or bankruptcy law but need ongoing nurturing—expect a longer conversion timeline for “cold” leads.TikTok and YouTube are best for lawyers with established online presences; TikTok is good for brand awareness, not big-ticket services.Google Pay-Per-Click (PPC) can get expensive quickly and doesn't guarantee client conversion. The success of any ad campaign depends on having solid systems to track leads and follow up effectively.Always track where your leads come from and calculate your return on ad spend to guide future decisions.Be cautious with marketing agencies—ensure they deliver on their tracking and reporting promises.Set a clear ad budget and specific goals before launching any campaign, and be ready to pivot if you're not seeing results. If you're not ready for ads, focus on lead magnets, nurturing emails, and tightening your internal processes to improve conversions.

Interest rates play a secondary role.  Deferred Income Annuities are, in essence, just a Single Premium Immediate Annuity that is deferred past a year. A SPIA has no moving parts, no market attachments, and no annual fees. It is a straight transfer of risk.  The highest possible payments you can have from an annuity are from a life-only annuity. This is the annuity for people who don't want to give to any beneficiaries. Companies often issue these without the option to change the start date, but you can change the start date if the contract has a cash refund or period certain attached to it.    "That income for life transfer risk strategy with annuities, typically four primary types SPIAS, DIAS, QLACs, and Income Riders. We can support those who are actually homeless with other versions of support such as food banks, soup kitchens and education. Most people on benefits or welfare want to work and want a job to support themselves, they just need the right help. There are some simple things the government can do to turn around many of society's current issues with homelessness and the workforce including reallocation of capital, changing the tax system and making the benefit system about incentivising people to work.  BEST MOMENTS"They make £150 a day” “There are two types of homeless, the homeless and the shameless” “You assume people sitting on the street are homeless but they're not, they're professional beggars” “Imagine if the government took our money and used to to train people on the streets, help them back to work instead of just giving them money” VALUABLE RESOURCES https://robmoore.com/ bit.ly/Robsupporter   https://robmoore.com/podbooks  rob.team ABOUT THE HOST Rob Moore is an author of 9 business books, 5 UK bestsellers, holds 3 world records for public speaking, entrepreneur, property investor, and property educator. Lyn discusses how masculine and feminine energy works in the dynamic of a romantic relationship, highlighting how societal conditioning sometimes leads women to (often unconsciously) exude more masculine energy in their lives and relationships, and examining the significance of being aware of how that affects our behaviours and results. KEY TAKEAWAYS There is a difference between masculine & feminine energy, masculine energy is associated with doing and action, while feminine energy is about being, intuition, and flow. Women may default into masculine energy as a protection mechanism due to past traumas or heartbreaks. This can hinder their ability to attract healthy masculine energy partners It's important for individuals to become more aware of their behaviours and how they show up in relationships. Some women need shift from a mindset of needing to control to one of 'letting go' to help foster healthier connections. Feeling feminine is personal and varies from woman to woman. It's essential to identify what makes YOU feel more feminine, whether it's through activities, clothing, accessories, or personal grooming BEST MOMENTS "The masculine and feminine energy dynamic really plays a huge part in the success of our relationships." "If we've had past trauma and heartbreaks, it's quite common for women to default into masculine energy as protection." "The feminine energy is all about relinquishing control." "Be aware that if you've not done the work on yourself... then you might need to delve into doing some of that to actually heal."ABOUT THE HOST Lyn Smith – (The Queen of HEARTS) – Love, Dating & Relationship Expert Lyn's personal story is a very inspirational and harrowing one of how she went from having unhealthy and unfulfilling relationships with men (on the back of several serious traumatic sexual assaults in her teens) to now being in a soul fulfilling relationship which makes her feel alive, is full of passion and gives her inner peace. We don't need more time, we need more action and momentum. • Your perfectionism is sabotaging your success. Start ugly and start scared, but start now or someone else will. In this special episode of Pipeline Visionaries, Ian Faison, CEO of Caspian Studios, breaks down the future of B2B content creation for 2025. He dives into frameworks and strategies, outlining the five methods of consumption and aiming for high quality that makes virality possible. He also dives into the difference between feeds, shows, and networks, giving case studies and examples and highlights the shift towards platform-specific content and the role of marketers as 'gardeners' in navigating walled gardens like YouTube and LinkedIn.Key Takeaways:There are five methods of consumption that marketers need to be thinking about: shorts, shows, medium form video, live entertainment and fiction.  The format matches consumption. Shorts for scrollers, shows for subscribers, limited series for binges, live events for live learners, fiction for edutainment. A feed and a show and a network are three different things. Creating a network allows audiences to self-select into the content that they like.  The optimal strategy for creating content to deliver it to your audiences, is for creators to create it and put it on the platform. Individuals, not brands.Quote: “ That's what we have to figure out - how do we maximize coverage for our target audience? And if you ignore methods of consumption or you ignore format, or you ignore hosts, you're inherently ignoring a subset of your population."  Episode Timestamps: *(00:06) The future of B2B content in 2025*(01:42) Five methods of consumption*(07:52) Framework: feeds, shows, and networks*(16:38) We're all gardeners: accessing walled gardens*(17:38) The shift to creator-first content*(24:41) The importance of distribution and creativitySponsor:Pipeline Visionaries is brought to you by Qualified.com. In this episode, The Annuity Man discussed:  Solving for longevity risk  Four products for lifetime income  Focusing on guarantees    Key Takeaways:  There is no ROI until you die. Up until then, it's a transfer of risk to the annuity company to solve for longevity risk. The longevity risk is the fear that you'll outlive your money. An annuity will pay as long as you're breathing, even if you are on a ventilator.  The annuity industry has four major types: Single Premium Immediate Annuities, Deferred Income Annuities, Qualified Longevity Annuity Contracts,  and Income Riders. All four provide a lifetime stream as long as you are breathing or if you set it as joint-life, as long as you or your spouse is breathing.  Forget all the shiny things that agents try to make you fixate on. Focus on the guarantee that you will get paid as long as you're breathing. You could also structure the contract so that your money goes to your beneficiaries when you die.    "The good thing about turning on lifetime income stream and transferring that risk to an annuity company to pay for as long as you're breathing or on a ventilator is that it's turnkey. And there will come a point if we live long enough that we will need that income to be turnkey." —  Stan The Annuity Man.    Connect with The Annuity Man:  Website: http://theannuityman.com/  Email: Stan@TheAnnuityMan.com  Book: Owner's Manuals: https://www.stantheannuityman.com/how-do-annuities-work YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCXKKxvVslbeGAlEc5sra2g  Get a Quote Today: https://www.stantheannuityman.com/annuity-calculator!

This week on Fat Science, Dr. Emily Cooper, Andrea Taylor, and Mark Wright explore the concept of “male menopause” and whether it's backed by science. Dr. Cooper breaks down hormonal changes in men, including testosterone decline, metabolic dysfunction, and the myths surrounding andropause. The episode dives into why men and women experience aging differently, how metabolism ties into hormone shifts, and what really happens to male fertility and energy over time. After listening, you'll understand why “male menopause” isn't the full story and what really matters for men's health as they age.Key Takeaways:There's no sudden “male menopause”—testosterone declines gradually in men, unlike the rapid hormonal changes seen in female menopause.Metabolic dysfunction can suppress testosterone in men, leading to fatigue, muscle loss, and changes in body fat distribution.Converting testosterone to estrogen in belly fat can further suppress testosterone, creating a cycle that impacts energy and mood.Testosterone therapy might be beneficial for some men with low levels, but should always be guided by a healthcare provider after thorough evaluation. Most supplements marketed to “boost testosterone” are unproven and potentially unsafe—focus on medical advice and proper testing.Personal Stories & Practical Advice:Mark shares his journey with testosterone treatment and how restoring balance improved his mood and energy.Andrea and Dr. Cooper discuss the importance of understanding individual lab results, getting the full metabolic picture, and consulting with primary care providers before considering hormone therapy.Resources:Connect with Dr. Emily Cooper on LinkedIn.Connect with Mark Wright on LinkedIn.Connect with Andrea Taylor on Instagram.Fat Science is a podcast on a mission to explain where our fat really comes from and why it won't go and stay away. In this episode, Therese Markow and Kim Mutcherson discuss the legal and ethical implications of the increasing number of frozen embryos and the complications of assisted reproductive technologies. With an estimated over 1 million frozen embryos in the United States, this is a complex topic, particularly around state laws, embryo disposition, the financial costs of IVF, and the potential increased regulation and legal challenges moving forward.     Key Takeaways: There is no hard data on how many embryos are currently frozen around the world, but there are estimated to be millions.  States differ, legally speaking, as to whether an embryo is considered a person. How do we determine what obligations related people have to an embryo?. There are many different options for what you can have done with your embryos, and those outcomes should be included in the contract before any medical care is provided. Because laws regarding frozen embryos vary from state to state and this should be considered when people are looking to set up a clinic or go through the process.   "Once you have created a business - an industry - that creates human beings, it is inevitable that you are going to run into all sorts of really difficult issues. You can't get around it. It's just the nature of the thing. And so if we're going to have this industry, and if it's going to exist, we're going to constantly be asking ourselves difficult legal questions, difficult ethical questions, and difficult moral questions." —  Kim Mutcherson   Connect with Kim Mutcherson: Professional Bio: https://law.rutgers.edu/kimberly-mutcherson  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kimberly-mutcherson/  X: https://x.com/ProfessorMutch      Connect with Therese: Website: www.criticallyspeaking.net Threads: @critically_speaking Email: theresemarkow@criticallyspeaking.net   Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. If you're feeling scattered, stuck in low-value activities, or just exhausted from chasing everything but achieving nothing—this conversation will snap you out of it. They dive into the mindset, frameworks, and daily habits that create momentum—not chaos. From the Productivity Pyramid to MVPs, the 168-Hour Rule, and the power of strategic thinking time, this episode is a masterclass in taking control of your time so you can finally move the needle in your life and business. Whether you're a solo agent, team leader, or entrepreneur juggling multiple roles, this episode will help you re-align, re-focus, and reclaim your week—one rock-solid calendar block at a time. Key Takeaways: There is no middle market anymore. The divide in the industry is real—agents are either thriving or freezing. There's no in-between. Distraction is the new pandemic. From AI overwhelm to lawsuits and brokerage drama, agents are more paralyzed than ever. Here's how to break the drift. Get grounded with the 168 Rule. You have 168 hours a week—what you do with it will determine your freedom or your frustration. Start with big rocks. Health, relationships, and mental clarity go in the calendar first. Business fills in second. Use the Productivity Pyramid. Focus on high-lifetime and high-dollar value activities. Delegate or delete the rest. Build an Ideal Week, not a fantasy one. Success is inevitable when you block the time, stick to your MVPs, and treat calendar time like million-dollar listing appointments. Leverage strategic thinking time. Ask: Where are we winning? What's breaking? What do we need to stop doing? Say no more often. If it's not a 9 or 10 in priority—it's a no. Nick talks about his recent decision to reenter the world of Private Equity after a six-year hiatus, driven by a desire to align his values with the industry. He reflects on past experiences, including the challenges of value extraction versus value creation, and the personal journey that led to their departure from Private Equity. The discussion highlights the current macro shifts in the market, including the wealth transition of baby boomers and the increasing need for strategic partnerships in private equity. Nick discusses the importance of mentoring and supporting entrepreneurs, advocating for a new model of private equity that focuses on collaboration and shared value creation. KEY TAKEAWAYS There is a significant shift in private equity towards operator-led and founder-led value creation, moving away from merely deploying capital. This evolution presents new opportunities for strategic partnerships with businesses. The retirement of baby boomers is leading to a wave of small-cap and lower mid-market opportunities, creating a pressing need for succession planning and business consolidation. Advances in technology, particularly AI, are transforming business models and enabling service businesses to scale globally, which presents opportunities for founders to leverage these changes for increased value. The aim is to redefine Private Equity as a vehicle for freedom, growth, and shared wealth, emphasising the importance of partnering with entrepreneurs to create mutual value rather than focusing solely on exits. BEST MOMENTS "I decided to leave because of a lot of things that happened during my decade in that industry that didn't align with my values." "I can't sit there saying how bad some of these different situations are... I shouldn't be just throwing stones at something and not trying to fix it." "There's a big explosion of small cap and lower mid-market opportunities... to allow founders to exit gracefully and elegantly is huge." "Entrepreneurship is a team sport at the best of times. In this episode, Therese Markow and Dr. Deborah Lang discuss the rise of skin cancer, particularly melanoma, and its causes. Dr. Lang explains that skin cancers are derived from different skin cells: basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, both linked to UV exposure, and melanoma, which can be UV-independent and linked to genetic susceptibility. Dr. Lang emphasizes the importance of early detection and personalized medicine, noting that melanoma can metastasize early. She also highlights the role of genetic mutations in cancer development and the impact of funding cuts on cancer research.    Key Takeaways: There are three major types of skin cancer. About 80% are basal cell carcinomas.  Because we are living longer, we have an increased chance of cancer. However, other reasons for increased skin cancer include increased UV exposure and tanning beds.  We are all born with moles, but if you notice a change or have a lot (such as over 100), it is worth getting them checked out.  Between 5 and 25 minutes of sun exposure per day is enough for your vitamin D production (less for lighter skin). However, sunlight has other benefits for your health and circadian rhythm.    "Melanomas are derived from a different type of cell - from cells that produce pigment called melanocytes. While this type of cancer is much rarer than basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma, it is the most lethal type of skin cancer." —  Dr. Deborah Lang   Episode References:  NIH: https://www.nih.gov/  American Cancer Society: https://www.cancer.gov/  Leo Foundation: https://leo-foundation.org/en/    Connect with Dr. Deborah Lang: Professional Bio: https://profiles.bu.edu/Deborah.Lang  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deborah-lang-691158208/  ResearchGate: https://www.researchgate.net/scientific-contributions/Deborah-Lang-38651370    Connect with Therese: Website: www.criticallyspeaking.net Threads: @critically_speaking Email: theresemarkow@criticallyspeaking.net   Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. Brooke is joined by special guest, Jordan Jarrett-Bryant, to discuss the exhilarating yet exhausting experience of covering live events, the challenges of staying updated in a fast-paced environment, and the importance of storytelling in sports journalism. Together they focus on the evolving landscape of media, highlighting how digital platforms have transformed audience engagement and representation in broadcasting. Jordan shares his most memorable moments from the Paralympics, including exclusive interviews and inspiring athlete stories, while also addressing the pressing issues of accessibility and disability rights in Paris. KEY TAKEAWAYS There has been a significant shift from traditional television to digital platforms, with audiences increasingly favouring services like Netflix, YouTube, and Apple TV. This change is driven by the demand for diverse content and the ability to watch what they want, when they want. The recent Paralympics highlighted both the excitement of sports and the ongoing challenges faced by disabled individuals, particularly regarding accessibility in host cities like Paris. Despite the celebration of athletic achievements, there are serious concerns about the lack of infrastructure for disabled people. Broadcasting during the Paralympics requires extensive preparation, but the ability to adapt to unexpected developments is crucial. Journalists must be ready to pivot quickly based on real-time events and emerging stories. The rise of digital media has democratised content creation, allowing individuals to share their stories without needing traditional media gatekeepers. However, this has also led to an influx of content that may lack substance, highlighting the need for quality and expertise in media production. BEST MOMENTS "TV has had to and it's TV's biggest fault, in my opinion. They were so complacent for so long and their refusal to diversify... has meant now that they've been overtaken by digital." "For me, it's the perfect kind of smudge of sports, disability and media." "I think the biggest difference I've seen is digital and what digital has allowed people to do is to watch what they want from who they want, when they want, how they want." "The audience is saying, we want more women. We want more black people. We want more disabled people... If you don't give it to us, that's fine. We'll go Netflix. We'll go YouTube." Scouting for Growth

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 3, 2025 45:42

On this episode of the Scouting For Growth podcast, Sabine VdL talks to Alex Schmelkin, a visionary entrepreneur who's reshaping the future of insurance operations. Alex is the Founder and CEO of Sixfold, a company at the forefront of harnessing Generative AI to empower insurance underwriters with groundbreaking tools and capabilities. Today, we'll explore how Sixfold is leveraging Generative AI to transform underwriting practices, the challenges and opportunities in implementing AI at scale, and Alex's vision for the future of insurance operations. KEY TAKEAWAYS There’s close to $7 trillion of premium written around the globe every year. That equals 7% of global GDP, it’s an enormous amount of premium that’s needed for the world to function and for people and businesses to take risks. The most underserved population are the underwriters, the people making decisions day in day out on that $7 trillion worth of business trying to figure out the good and bad risks and why. There’s so little support for these unsung heroes. The typical underwriter is reading the equivalent of a novel every 2-3 days in documentation. These are not interesting fiction novels, they’re information-dense losses, statements of values of property and exposures. We’ve expected them to consume more and more but it’s information overload. Enter language models and AI, in the first time in human history we have the ability to take in a nearly limitless volume of data and help the underwriter to see through that to find the patterns without having to read every single word on every single page and free them to do the extra research at the end to find the best result for the end customer. Regulators understand that AI is here and have already embraced it. They’re not as ahead of it as we would like them to be, as an industry, and they’re not getting everything right. But by putting a few fence posts around the problem we’re trying to solve they’ve forced the conversation and the industry to respond to it and to start rolling out the way we are with some of these AI transparency partner models. The single challenge we run into everywhere is underwriter trust. The underwriters, despite being overworked, there not being enough of them, and despite it being a challenging job, are really good at what they do. The reason is they’ve been trained over the years to do everything they can to get the right answer. They’re the front line protecting insurance companies from bringing on bad risks. The hardest thing is to convince them is that AI is accurate. If they have a bad experience with AI first time they may not go back ever. BEST MOMENTS ‘I found insurance – or it found me – almost 20 years ago and I’ve never looked back, and it’s all underwriting all the time.’‘The biggest use of GenAI today is helping underwriters to find more accuracy, be more effective, and more transparent in their underwriting efforts.’‘We attempt to arm the human with a bevy of different things for the that are the less value-producing part of their jobs.’‘The human is so much more effective when they’re working beside a robot that helps them be more accurate and more efficient at their job.’ ABOUT THE GUEST Alex Schmelkin is the Founder and CEO of Sixfold and is at the forefront of revolutionizing how insurance underwriters operate through Generative AI—a game-changing approach that not only enhances decision-making but also streamlines processes for a more efficient future. His knack for identifying industry pain points and transforming them into innovative solutions has been the backbone of his success. With a deep-rooted belief in the power of technology to drive growth, Alex has consistently pushed the envelope, challenging norms and inspiring those around him. Beyond his entrepreneurial endeavors, Alex is a dynamic speaker who captivates audiences with insights on SaaS, customer experience, and technology ethics. His passion for responsible innovation shines through in every conversation, as he advocates for solutions that not only meet business needs but also uphold ethical standards. Simon argues that the system works, but emphasises the need for a cohesive society supported by fair tax policies. KEY TAKEAWAYS There is a need for a cohesive society that balances economic growth with social responsibility. Investing and risking personal capital should be treated differently from earning a salary. The public sector could benefit from adopting productivity measures similar to those in the private sector. The current system may lack accountability and incentives for performance, leading to inefficiencies. Complacency and a lack of competitive drive have emerged in society, particularly among younger generations. BEST MOMENTS "The driving force isn't the personal wealth. On this episode, I discuss how I have been reconnecting to my darkness. That by re-sharing my story on the podcast it has re-surfaced shadow aspects of self that I didn't realized I had abandoned. They are being seen again and it's been challenging. Trust has been broken, fear is present, vulnerability is at the forefront, and my shadows have a lot to say. Deciding to no longer hide is no fucking joke. Even though this has been challenging, it has also been liberating. I am remembering at a deeper level (as the spiral goes) that my wisdom lies within my darkness. That is where the medicine resides, and as the relationship with my darkness strengthens again, so does the relationship with my liberation. Key Takeaways: There is nothing wrong with you True love and light is here as a result of the embodiment of your darkness Being in tune with your shadow is being in tune with your authenticity How you do one thing is how you do everything If you shove down and reject your darkness, it will come up and affect how you live your daily life When you're in relationship with your darkness, as a byproduct, you're also in relationship with liberation     https://creatinglight.co Try a somatic activated healing class for free, here! In this episode, Therese Markow and Charles Piller discuss the slow progress of Alzheimer's treatments. Based on his research and findings as an investigative journalist, as well as his newest book, Doctored: Fraud, Arrogance, and Tragedy in the Quest to Cure Alzheimer's, they discuss the complexity of the disease, msiconduct in the research, and the other problems the research is facing despite the funding for it being at an all time high. Charles comments on the FDA's reliance on industry-affiliated advisors, the revolving door phenomenon, and why the new anti-amyloid drugs are not as practical as they might seem on the surface with limited effectiveness, high costs, and high liability. Finally, Charles emphasizes the need for diverse research strategies and better regulation to protect patients and families traversing this complex disease.     Key Takeaways: There are more than 7 million people with Alzheimer's in the US. In addition, there are 11 million family caregivers or loved ones taking care of these patients, which is an enormous issue and burden, both financial and emotional.  The Amyloid Mafia idea is behind the concerns that the competitive pressure has reduced the extent of the types of ideas that are being fully examined in the treatments for Alzheimer's. While science is often self-correcting, it can take time. It is important for forensic image sleuths and journalists to expose misconduct and other scientific errors or wrongdoings to speed up that process of science, acknowledging and correcting the errors.    "In the marketplace of scientific ideas, competition is almost always valuable to test and press the progenitors of these ideas into being able to think flexibly and to try to prove out the ones that are the ones that are the most effective." —  Charles Piller   Connect with Charles Piller: Professional Bio: https://www.science.org/content/author/charles-piller  Book: Doctored: Fraud, Arrogance, and Tragedy in the Quest to Cure Alzheimer's - https://www.amazon.com/Doctored-Fraud-Arrogance-Tragedy-Alzheimers/dp/1668031248    Connect with Therese: Website: www.criticallyspeaking.net Threads: @critically_speaking Email: theresemarkow@criticallyspeaking.net    Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. Today's episode is a bit of a special treat. I'm sharing a live call from my Brand Builders Academy, and it's all about Pressure Testing Your Pricing. It's something I believe is super important for you to hear. I wanted to kick off March with some sales magic—focusing on money, pricing, and going bigger with your brand.  Key Takeaways: There's always someone in the market who will pay premium prices for the transformation you offer. It's crucial to know deep down that what you bring is worth every penny. If Russell Bronson can throw a $1 million offer out there, trust me, there's potential for your pricing to stretch too. Have you tried imagining how it feels to charge different amounts? I call it pressure testing. Think about charging $1,000, then $5,000, and even $10,000. Notice where it feels uncomfortable or yucky and ask yourself why. It's an exercise in knowing your worth and being open to new possibilities. Your price often reflects the value you deliver and the brand you build around it. Look at what your audience sees and hears from you. Is it aspirational? Are you communicating the value of your service in a way that makes them want to book with you now or put you on their vision board? I can't emphasize enough how crucial it is to communicate the value of your offer—showcase the transformation, the wins. Whether it's a luxurious VIP experience or a simple service, your audience needs to see why you're worth the investment. Sometimes, it feels like to charge more, you need to give away your soul (not literally!). But often, it's about the wrapping—how you package and talk about your offer. Create an irresistible package that speaks to your clients' desires and meet them at their level. Doesn't it feel exhilarating to push those boundaries? Embracing this mindset shift could be the game-changer for elevating your brand and your income. Trust in your capabilities, communicate your excellence, and the results will follow.   NEXT STEPS: READY TO WORK TOGETHER AND TAKE YOUR BUSINESS & BRAND TO THE NEXT LEVEL:

Interviewing ‘interesting’ people is something many podcasters try and fail at, so in this episode, Ash and Kane tell you how to do it right and reveal common mistakes. KEY TAKEAWAYS There are already many highly successful interview podcasts in the space so it can be difficult to get fast growth and high monetisation, particularly as they don’t generally appeal to a specific audience. A plus side of this type of podcast is there is no ceiling, the opportunities are endless. You need top tier production to give yourself a chance in the space. Filming in person is essential to get your guest to open up for this type of podcast, to get the content that is good enough to set you apart from the rest. In person interviews give you more time to build rapport with the guest before the interview, and there is usually less of a time limit if you want to record for longer. You have to be a fantastic host, to be able to ask the best questions and to be an active listener. Ask the questions that the guest won’t have been asked before to get original content. If your show will primarily be on YouTube then you can vary your theme and guests as the YouTube algorithm will put it in front of the right audience. If you are doing audio only then you need to be more careful and have some cohesion among your episodes and serve your audience. Niche is more important if you want to monestise, if you don’t need to straight away then you can be a much more varied. BEST MOMENTS “There are a lot of very good ones out there already and it doesn’t appeal to a specific audience” “Of those really big shows that just interview interesting people, none of them slack on production, they look like TV” “In person is important and really high quality production, that’s an easy way to stand out online” “If someone has been on multiple podcasts, do not do the story” “Finding those (interview) gems is really difficult” “If you want to monetise, niche is important” VALUABLE RESOURCES Website EPISODES TO CHECK OUT NEXT Comparing Podcast Production Options | using AI? This episode features an interview with Alex Saric, CMO at Ivalua, a company that empowers businesses to effectively manage all categories of spend and all suppliers, increasing profitability, improving ESG performance, lowering risk, and improving employee productivity. In this conversation, Alex shares his insights into pitching to and engaging with analysts, and how Ivalua has lead in reports since he joined the organization. He also dives into the ways he supports his team in building a dynamic website and when events with significant impact aren't measurable in terms of ROI. Key Takeaways:There is a strategy to sharing your value with analysts in order to lead in their reports. Sharing strategically chosen customer stories and assessing what influences each analyst can go a long way. In addition to the basics of creating a great website and tracking traffic, you need to create a dynamic website. Empowering your team to make minor changes and request major changes can allow you to adjust quickly and improve your website strategy. There is a tendency to focus on fixing problems, but don't forget to also assess how to improve and scale what is working well. Quote:  Yes, I'll say when I joined,  we at the time were not a leader in almost any of these reports that were out there. I think we had broken into one. In the  7 years, and knock on wood, I don't want to jinx myself, we've been the leader in every single report from Gartner and Forrester since then. And I'd say, you know, what I really did, it was probably one of my first priorities, given how important it is in our industry, I reached out to the analysts, started meeting one-on-one with the key analysts there. And of course, you know, I'm going to tell them my pitch,  but they're smart enough to know take it with a grain of salt. I think the important thing is to start introducing them to customers because that's where you get a lot of credibility, if the customers back up what you're saying. And you can be very strategic. So, you know, I was very careful in, the competitor that was kind of the top competitor at the time, making sure I introduced the analyst to customers that had switched from that competitor, which would privately both talk about us, but also kind of badmouth,  their past vendor and that really helped kind of flip the switch and start building credibility what I was saying was actually true. And also improving the rankings. And besides the rankings, they're also influencing a lot of deals behind the scenes and I think they start recommending us a lot more after that. Episode Timestamps: *(03:27) The Trust Tree: Structuring the team to tap into regional expertise *(09:27) The Playbook: Engaging with analysts and leading in reports *(33:34) The Dust Up: Healthy tension with other functions*(34:42) Quick Hits: Alex's quick hits Sponsor:Pipeline Visionaries is brought to you by Qualified.com.
