Nick talks about his recent decision to reenter the world of Private Equity after a six-year hiatus, driven by a desire to align his values with the industry. He reflects on past experiences, including the challenges of value extraction versus value creation, and the personal journey that led to their departure from Private Equity. The discussion highlights the current macro shifts in the market, including the wealth transition of baby boomers and the increasing need for strategic partnerships in private equity. Nick discusses the importance of mentoring and supporting entrepreneurs, advocating for a new model of private equity that focuses on collaboration and shared value creation. KEY TAKEAWAYS There is a significant shift in private equity towards operator-led and founder-led value creation, moving away from merely deploying capital. This evolution presents new opportunities for strategic partnerships with businesses. The retirement of baby boomers is leading to a wave of small-cap and lower mid-market opportunities, creating a pressing need for succession planning and business consolidation. Advances in technology, particularly AI, are transforming business models and enabling service businesses to scale globally, which presents opportunities for founders to leverage these changes for increased value. The aim is to redefine Private Equity as a vehicle for freedom, growth, and shared wealth, emphasising the importance of partnering with entrepreneurs to create mutual value rather than focusing solely on exits. BEST MOMENTS "I decided to leave because of a lot of things that happened during my decade in that industry that didn't align with my values." "I can't sit there saying how bad some of these different situations are... I shouldn't be just throwing stones at something and not trying to fix it." "There's a big explosion of small cap and lower mid-market opportunities... to allow founders to exit gracefully and elegantly is huge." "Entrepreneurship is a team sport at the best of times. You don't want to be the person who's having to pull everything uphill." "My mission around it really is to redefine private equity as a vehicle for freedom and growth and wealth, not just the exit." “In the south it's always more dynamic. Everyone is just moving around all the time. In the north, it's slower. People are a bit meaner.” - Viet AnhFor nearly ten years now, I've called Vietnam home, and while I've experienced the incredible energy and warmth of the south, Viet Anh's perspective on the north offered a viewpoint I hadn't fully considered. It's fascinating how regional differences can shape the experience of living in the same country. We touched on the sometimes-surprising toxicity that can bubble up online, both within expat communities and among Vietnamese internet users. It's a stark contrast to the welcoming spirit I've largely encountered here. We also reflected on how things change over time – from cinema etiquette to the increasing polarization of opinions, it feels like the Vietnam I first encountered is constantly evolving.Key Takeaways:- There are perceived significant differences in pace and demeanor between the north and south of Vietnam.- Online toxicity is a notable issue within expat and Vietnamese online communities.- Cultural norms and perspectives are constantly evolving in Vietnam.- Stereotypes about foreigners in Vietnam, particularly English teachers, exist and need to be addressed.- The economic contribution of foreigners in Vietnam is often misunderstood, with many filling roles that locals don't typically pursue.Chapters and Timestamps:05:59: Discussion on Online Toxicity 10:59: Changing Perspectives and Behaviors Over Time 14:59: Stereotypes of Foreigners in Vietnam 24:00: Economic Contributions of Foreign Workers "Send me a message!"The Podcast Launch LabThe Podcast Makeover Try Descript for free here!Support the show
In this episode, Therese Markow and Dr. Deborah Lang discuss the rise of skin cancer, particularly melanoma, and its causes. Dr. Lang explains that skin cancers are derived from different skin cells: basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, both linked to UV exposure, and melanoma, which can be UV-independent and linked to genetic susceptibility. Dr. Lang emphasizes the importance of early detection and personalized medicine, noting that melanoma can metastasize early. She also highlights the role of genetic mutations in cancer development and the impact of funding cuts on cancer research. Key Takeaways: There are three major types of skin cancer. About 80% are basal cell carcinomas. Because we are living longer, we have an increased chance of cancer. However, other reasons for increased skin cancer include increased UV exposure and tanning beds. We are all born with moles, but if you notice a change or have a lot (such as over 100), it is worth getting them checked out. Between 5 and 25 minutes of sun exposure per day is enough for your vitamin D production (less for lighter skin). However, sunlight has other benefits for your health and circadian rhythm. "Melanomas are derived from a different type of cell - from cells that produce pigment called melanocytes. While this type of cancer is much rarer than basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma, it is the most lethal type of skin cancer." — Dr. Deborah Lang Episode References: NIH: https://www.nih.gov/ American Cancer Society: https://www.cancer.gov/ Leo Foundation: https://leo-foundation.org/en/ Connect with Dr. Deborah Lang: Professional Bio: https://profiles.bu.edu/Deborah.Lang LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deborah-lang-691158208/ ResearchGate: https://www.researchgate.net/scientific-contributions/Deborah-Lang-38651370 Connect with Therese: Website: www.criticallyspeaking.net Threads: @critically_speaking Email: theresemarkow@criticallyspeaking.net Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. Brooke is joined by special guest, Jordan Jarrett-Bryant, to discuss the exhilarating yet exhausting experience of covering live events, the challenges of staying updated in a fast-paced environment, and the importance of storytelling in sports journalism. Together they focus on the evolving landscape of media, highlighting how digital platforms have transformed audience engagement and representation in broadcasting. Jordan shares his most memorable moments from the Paralympics, including exclusive interviews and inspiring athlete stories, while also addressing the pressing issues of accessibility and disability rights in Paris. KEY TAKEAWAYS There has been a significant shift from traditional television to digital platforms, with audiences increasingly favouring services like Netflix, YouTube, and Apple TV. This change is driven by the demand for diverse content and the ability to watch what they want, when they want. The recent Paralympics highlighted both the excitement of sports and the ongoing challenges faced by disabled individuals, particularly regarding accessibility in host cities like Paris. Despite the celebration of athletic achievements, there are serious concerns about the lack of infrastructure for disabled people. Broadcasting during the Paralympics requires extensive preparation, but the ability to adapt to unexpected developments is crucial. Journalists must be ready to pivot quickly based on real-time events and emerging stories. The rise of digital media has democratised content creation, allowing individuals to share their stories without needing traditional media gatekeepers. However, this has also led to an influx of content that may lack substance, highlighting the need for quality and expertise in media production. BEST MOMENTS "TV has had to and it's TV's biggest fault, in my opinion. They were so complacent for so long and their refusal to diversify... has meant now that they've been overtaken by digital." "For me, it's the perfect kind of smudge of sports, disability and media." "I think the biggest difference I've seen is digital and what digital has allowed people to do is to watch what they want from who they want, when they want, how they want." "The audience is saying, we want more women. We want more black people. We want more disabled people... If you don't give it to us, that's fine. We'll go Netflix. We'll go YouTube." In this extremely powerful and practical episode, Yvonne and Matt Cooke share several simple yet highly effective ways to super charge your manifestation. Techniques that will work for you regardless of where you are on your journey. Matt also explains the science behind them. They cover manifesting love, using signs and your dreams, how to recognise and pay attention to answers as they present themselves, using meditation and visualisation, angel numbers, manifesting with a partner, why finding joy and fun in the life you have now is so important and much more. KEY TAKEAWAYS There are no coincidences, it is synchronicity, things happen for a reason. You can tap into this to manifest faster. Directed dreaming is powerful for manifesting because you are removing all friction and noise. Everyone has precognitive dreams. Matt explains how to use them. Removing friction makes it easier to manifest. Finding joy in what you have and injecting more fun into your life really helps with this. When it comes to manifesting love, it really isn't about that person that you want to meet, it´s about you. Your body does not know whether something is real or not which is why meditation helps so much. Angel numbers are signs from the universe. Matt explains how to recognise them. When you genuinely let go of how it's going to happen, it happens. Listen to your gut, especially if something does not feel right. Bad things happen to everyone, trust that there is a reason for this and that you will weather the storm. Protect your energy and learn to say no. If you keep saying yes when you want to say no, you become resentful. Make sure you are not giving your energy away and wasting it. When manifesting with a partner, realise that whilst the goal is the same, your motivations may be different. You need to accommodate this fact. If your spouse is negative, give them space while slowly shining a light on their negativity, so they become aware of it and start to change it Meet people where they are at, you can´t force them to believe in manifestation. BEST MOMENTS “Precognitive dreams are very real. That's how I manifested my house in Cornwall.” “If you don’t get enough sleep .. there´s going to be too much friction.” “The universe will deliver when you're in joy, because your vibration will be higher.” “Meditation is a great way to have fun even if you can´t have fun.” “I first thought Angel numbers were a bit Woo … Angel numbers are angles of insight.” “Rejection is protection and redirection.” “Don't be so specific that you limit the universe to one thing.” “Even the chaos might be leading you somewhere better.” “The universe throws us challenges…to see if you are going to stick to your values.” “I don't chase; I attract.” “Let go of that people-pleasing streak, it only makes you resentful.” “You don't attract into your life what you want, you attract into your life who you are.” VALUABLE RESOURCES website: pausepenny.com Instagram: @yvonnetchrakian_manifest @pause.penny LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/yvonne-tchrakian-64257619/ HOST BIO Yvonne started her career as a corporate lawyer for one of Ireland's top law firms. In Season 5 of Educator Yarns, host Jess Staines, Director of Koori Curriculum, is joined by Bec Burch, founder of Bush Kindy Australia. Together, they explore the fascinating intersection between Aboriginal perspectives, nature play, and sustainability in early childhood education. This thoughtful conversation delves into common misconceptions held by educators, highlighting that while these three areas overlap, they remain distinct educational focuses requiring intentional integration. Bec shares her wealth of experience in establishing nature-based learning programs across Australia, whilst Jess offers invaluable insights into meaningful Aboriginal cultural integration beyond superficial activities. This episode sets the foundation for a season dedicated to helping educators move beyond "just sticks and stones" towards deeper, more authentic engagement with both nature and Aboriginal cultural perspectives. Key Takeaways: · There are common misconceptions that simply being outdoors constitutes both nature play and cultural awareness practice, when each requires distinct, intentional approaches. · Acknowledgments of Country should extend beyond mere words—educators should know specific traditional owners' names and actively demonstrate respect through ongoing actions. · Aboriginal perspectives on land connection view humans as custodians who come from the land rather than own it, emphasising harmonious, sustainable relationships. · Many educators lack confidence in outdoor educational practices, focusing primarily on safety considerations without developing rich learning experiences in nature. · Bushtucker gardens in services require ongoing care, knowledge, and intentional use to avoid sending children messages of disrespect or disconnection. · Educator professional development in both nature pedagogy and Aboriginal perspectives remains limited in many qualifications, creating knowledge gaps in practice. · Services often prioritise purchasing resources (like Bushtucker plants) without equivalent investment in knowledge development for staff about those resources. · Effective nature play and cultural integration require educators to take responsibility for their own knowledge-seeking beyond their formal qualifications. · True integration of Aboriginal perspectives requires moving beyond tokenistic activities like "painting with sticks" to deeper cultural understanding and practices. Understanding that meaningful integration requires intentional learning, community connections, and ongoing commitment will transform your practice. On this episode of the Scouting For Growth podcast, Sabine VdL talks to Alex Schmelkin, a visionary entrepreneur who's reshaping the future of insurance operations. Alex is the Founder and CEO of Sixfold, a company at the forefront of harnessing Generative AI to empower insurance underwriters with groundbreaking tools and capabilities. Today, we'll explore how Sixfold is leveraging Generative AI to transform underwriting practices, the challenges and opportunities in implementing AI at scale, and Alex's vision for the future of insurance operations. KEY TAKEAWAYS There’s close to $7 trillion of premium written around the globe every year. That equals 7% of global GDP, it’s an enormous amount of premium that’s needed for the world to function and for people and businesses to take risks. The most underserved population are the underwriters, the people making decisions day in day out on that $7 trillion worth of business trying to figure out the good and bad risks and why. There’s so little support for these unsung heroes. The typical underwriter is reading the equivalent of a novel every 2-3 days in documentation. These are not interesting fiction novels, they’re information-dense losses, statements of values of property and exposures. We’ve expected them to consume more and more but it’s information overload. Enter language models and AI, in the first time in human history we have the ability to take in a nearly limitless volume of data and help the underwriter to see through that to find the patterns without having to read every single word on every single page and free them to do the extra research at the end to find the best result for the end customer. Regulators understand that AI is here and have already embraced it. They’re not as ahead of it as we would like them to be, as an industry, and they’re not getting everything right. But by putting a few fence posts around the problem we’re trying to solve they’ve forced the conversation and the industry to respond to it and to start rolling out the way we are with some of these AI transparency partner models. The single challenge we run into everywhere is underwriter trust. The underwriters, despite being overworked, there not being enough of them, and despite it being a challenging job, are really good at what they do. The reason is they’ve been trained over the years to do everything they can to get the right answer. They’re the front line protecting insurance companies from bringing on bad risks. The hardest thing is to convince them is that AI is accurate. If they have a bad experience with AI first time they may not go back ever. BEST MOMENTS ‘I found insurance – or it found me – almost 20 years ago and I’ve never looked back, and it’s all underwriting all the time.’‘The biggest use of GenAI today is helping underwriters to find more accuracy, be more effective, and more transparent in their underwriting efforts.’‘We attempt to arm the human with a bevy of different things for the that are the less value-producing part of their jobs.’‘The human is so much more effective when they’re working beside a robot that helps them be more accurate and more efficient at their job.’ ABOUT THE GUEST Alex Schmelkin is the Founder and CEO of Sixfold and is at the forefront of revolutionizing how insurance underwriters operate through Generative AI—a game-changing approach that not only enhances decision-making but also streamlines processes for a more efficient future. His knack for identifying industry pain points and transforming them into innovative solutions has been the backbone of his success. With a deep-rooted belief in the power of technology to drive growth, Alex has consistently pushed the envelope, challenging norms and inspiring those around him. Beyond his entrepreneurial endeavors, Alex is a dynamic speaker who captivates audiences with insights on SaaS, customer experience, and technology ethics. His passion for responsible innovation shines through in every conversation, as he advocates for solutions that not only meet business needs but also uphold ethical standards. Simon argues that the system works, but emphasises the need for a cohesive society supported by fair tax policies. KEY TAKEAWAYS There is a need for a cohesive society that balances economic growth with social responsibility. Investing and risking personal capital should be treated differently from earning a salary. The public sector could benefit from adopting productivity measures similar to those in the private sector. The current system may lack accountability and incentives for performance, leading to inefficiencies. Complacency and a lack of competitive drive have emerged in society, particularly among younger generations. BEST MOMENTS "The driving force isn't the personal wealth. On this episode, I discuss how I have been reconnecting to my darkness. That by re-sharing my story on the podcast it has re-surfaced shadow aspects of self that I didn't realized I had abandoned. They are being seen again and it's been challenging. Trust has been broken, fear is present, vulnerability is at the forefront, and my shadows have a lot to say. Deciding to no longer hide is no fucking joke. Even though this has been challenging, it has also been liberating. I am remembering at a deeper level (as the spiral goes) that my wisdom lies within my darkness. That is where the medicine resides, and as the relationship with my darkness strengthens again, so does the relationship with my liberation. Key Takeaways: There is nothing wrong with you True love and light is here as a result of the embodiment of your darkness Being in tune with your shadow is being in tune with your authenticity How you do one thing is how you do everything If you shove down and reject your darkness, it will come up and affect how you live your daily life When you're in relationship with your darkness, as a byproduct, you're also in relationship with liberation https://creatinglight.co Try a somatic activated healing class for free, here! KEY TAKEAWAYS There has been a significant increase in CEO turnover, with around 2,000 CEOs leaving their positions in the last 12 months, indicating a growing trend in leadership changes across various industries. In this episode, Therese Markow and Charles Piller discuss the slow progress of Alzheimer's treatments. Based on his research and findings as an investigative journalist, as well as his newest book, Doctored: Fraud, Arrogance, and Tragedy in the Quest to Cure Alzheimer's, they discuss the complexity of the disease, msiconduct in the research, and the other problems the research is facing despite the funding for it being at an all time high. Charles comments on the FDA's reliance on industry-affiliated advisors, the revolving door phenomenon, and why the new anti-amyloid drugs are not as practical as they might seem on the surface with limited effectiveness, high costs, and high liability. Finally, Charles emphasizes the need for diverse research strategies and better regulation to protect patients and families traversing this complex disease. Key Takeaways: There are more than 7 million people with Alzheimer's in the US. In addition, there are 11 million family caregivers or loved ones taking care of these patients, which is an enormous issue and burden, both financial and emotional. The Amyloid Mafia idea is behind the concerns that the competitive pressure has reduced the extent of the types of ideas that are being fully examined in the treatments for Alzheimer's. While science is often self-correcting, it can take time. It is important for forensic image sleuths and journalists to expose misconduct and other scientific errors or wrongdoings to speed up that process of science, acknowledging and correcting the errors. "In the marketplace of scientific ideas, competition is almost always valuable to test and press the progenitors of these ideas into being able to think flexibly and to try to prove out the ones that are the ones that are the most effective." — Charles Piller Connect with Charles Piller: Professional Bio: https://www.science.org/content/author/charles-piller Book: Doctored: Fraud, Arrogance, and Tragedy in the Quest to Cure Alzheimer's - https://www.amazon.com/Doctored-Fraud-Arrogance-Tragedy-Alzheimers/dp/1668031248 Connect with Therese: Website: www.criticallyspeaking.net Threads: @critically_speaking Email: theresemarkow@criticallyspeaking.net Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. Show Notes: Are you paying extra for foods labeled "non-GMO" without knowing what it actually means? In this episode of Wake Up and Read the Labels, Jen Smiley exposes the seven real GMO crops and how food companies use misleading marketing to make their products seem healthier than they are. From non-GMO salt (which doesn't even exist!) to deceptive claims on bread, juice, and cereal, Jen reveals the food industry's tricks and how to truly avoid GMOs for better health.Plus, learn why autoimmune diseases and inflammation are skyrocketing, and how GMOs may be playing a role. If you're tired of being misled at the grocery store, this episode is a must-listen! Key Takeaways:There are only seven GMO crops: Corn, soybean, canola, sugar beets, alfalfa, cotton, and potatoes—plus some papaya, pink pineapple, and summer squash.Non-GMO labels are often misleading: There's no such thing as non-GMO salt, wheat, oats, dairy, or oranges, but companies use this label to charge more.GMOs contribute to inflammation and autoimmune diseases: Many processed foods made from GMO corn, soy, and sugar beets can damage gut health and trigger immune responses. The government subsidizes unhealthy ingredients: Grains, seed oils, sugar, and dairy products are mass-produced because they're cheap, not because they're healthy. How to actually avoid GMOs: Buy organic, shop the perimeter of the store, and check ingredient lists—not just marketing claims.Use the Read the Labels app: Scan foods at the grocery store to instantly see if they contain sneaky inflammatory ingredients.
Today's episode is a bit of a special treat. I'm sharing a live call from my Brand Builders Academy, and it's all about Pressure Testing Your Pricing. It's something I believe is super important for you to hear. I wanted to kick off March with some sales magic—focusing on money, pricing, and going bigger with your brand. Key Takeaways: There's always someone in the market who will pay premium prices for the transformation you offer. It's crucial to know deep down that what you bring is worth every penny. If Russell Bronson can throw a $1 million offer out there, trust me, there's potential for your pricing to stretch too. Have you tried imagining how it feels to charge different amounts? I call it pressure testing. Think about charging $1,000, then $5,000, and even $10,000. Notice where it feels uncomfortable or yucky and ask yourself why. It's an exercise in knowing your worth and being open to new possibilities. Your price often reflects the value you deliver and the brand you build around it. Look at what your audience sees and hears from you. Is it aspirational? Are you communicating the value of your service in a way that makes them want to book with you now or put you on their vision board? I can't emphasize enough how crucial it is to communicate the value of your offer—showcase the transformation, the wins. Whether it's a luxurious VIP experience or a simple service, your audience needs to see why you're worth the investment. Sometimes, it feels like to charge more, you need to give away your soul (not literally!). But often, it's about the wrapping—how you package and talk about your offer. Create an irresistible package that speaks to your clients' desires and meet them at their level. Doesn't it feel exhilarating to push those boundaries? Embracing this mindset shift could be the game-changer for elevating your brand and your income. Trust in your capabilities, communicate your excellence, and the results will follow. NEXT STEPS: READY TO WORK TOGETHER AND TAKE YOUR BUSINESS & BRAND TO THE NEXT LEVEL:
In this episode of the Do Better Podcast, Dr. Megan and Joe discuss considerations around determining treatment intensity. ARTICLE about POP-CAI SUMMARY FROM FATHOMMeeting PurposeLive recording of the Do Better Podcast discussing how to determine appropriate service intensity for ABA therapy clients.Key Takeaways - There's a lack of standardized training/processes for determining ABA therapy hours - New tools like POP-C (Patient Outcome Planning Calculator) are emerging to help guide decisions - Many factors impact appropriate service intensity beyond just client needs (e.g. family capacity, funding constraints) - More research is needed to determine optimal ways to prescribe treatment intensityTopicsCurrent State of Service Intensity Decision-Making - Historically, funding limitations often dictated hours (e.g. 6-10 hrs/week) - Many BCBAs receive no formal training on how to determine appropriate hours - Some organizations developing internal tools/processes, but no industry standard - New research-based tools like POPC starting to emergePOP-C (Patient Outcome Planning Calculator) - New tool published in 2023 to help determine service intensity - 33-question assessment placing clients into high (30-40 hrs), medium (20-30 hrs) or low (up to 20 hrs) tiers - Considers factors like diagnosis, behavior severity, communication skills, social avoidance - Still in early stages - authors seeking beta testersChallenges in Determining Appropriate Hours - Balancing clinical recommendations vs. family/logistical constraints - Insurance requirements may not align with clinical judgment - Difficulty measuring impact of prescribed vs. actual hours received - Varying capacity of families to supplement therapy hours - Considering opportunity costs (e.g. school time) of intensive 1:1 therapyFunding and Industry Trends - Some providers only accepting clients who can meet minimum hour thresholds - Medicaid/insurance cutting back on covered services in some areas - Potential for very limited covered hours (e.g. 4 hrs/month) in future - Need for efficiency and prioritization if hours become more constrainedNext Steps - Interested BCBAs can reach out to POP-C authors about beta testing - Continue monitoring emerging research and tools for determining service intensity - Consider how to adapt practices if funding becomes more limited in future

One of the most popular podcasting formats is also one of the most difficult to get right. Interviewing ‘interesting’ people is something many podcasters try and fail at, so in this episode, Ash and Kane tell you how to do it right and reveal common mistakes. KEY TAKEAWAYS There are already many highly successful interview podcasts in the space so it can be difficult to get fast growth and high monetisation, particularly as they don’t generally appeal to a specific audience. A plus side of this type of podcast is there is no ceiling, the opportunities are endless. You need top tier production to give yourself a chance in the space. Filming in person is essential to get your guest to open up for this type of podcast, to get the content that is good enough to set you apart from the rest. In person interviews give you more time to build rapport with the guest before the interview, and there is usually less of a time limit if you want to record for longer. You have to be a fantastic host, to be able to ask the best questions and to be an active listener. Ask the questions that the guest won’t have been asked before to get original content. If your show will primarily be on YouTube then you can vary your theme and guests as the YouTube algorithm will put it in front of the right audience. If you are doing audio only then you need to be more careful and have some cohesion among your episodes and serve your audience. Niche is more important if you want to monestise, if you don’t need to straight away then you can be a much more varied. BEST MOMENTS “There are a lot of very good ones out there already and it doesn’t appeal to a specific audience” “Of those really big shows that just interview interesting people, none of them slack on production, they look like TV” “In person is important and really high quality production, that’s an easy way to stand out online” “If someone has been on multiple podcasts, do not do the story” “Finding those (interview) gems is really difficult” “If you want to monetise, niche is important” VALUABLE RESOURCES Website EPISODES TO CHECK OUT NEXT Comparing Podcast Production Options | using AI? In this episode, Rob and Kane share how they would invest 10k to get the best return. They explore everything from traditional investments like gold and property to newer opportunities in cryptocurrency and digital assets. Rob talks about the power behind diversification in investing and why passion can make all the difference, as well as the importance of age appropriate investing, risk management, and the crucial balance between making and maintaining wealth. KEY TAKEAWAYS There are three ways property makes you money: it goes up in value over time, generates rental income, and can be bought below market value. This magical triad is an advantage that makes property unique compared to other investments. Your age should influence how you invest, younger people can take bigger risks because they have time to recover, while older investors should focus more on protecting their wealth and generating steady income. Digital investments (like website domains) can make good money but are riskier than physical assets. Someone can't "turn off" your gold or property like they can a website. Making money requires focus and taking calculated risks, while keeping money needs a more careful, diversified approach. Master both skills to build lasting wealth. Real investing beats practice investing every time, putting even a small amount of real money into something teaches you more than pretending with fake money. There are four key money skills to develop: making it, managing it, growing it, and keeping it. Each needs its own strategy and approach. BEST MOMENTS "In order to make money, you need to be aggressive, in order to keep money, you need to be defensive... Diversification reduces risk, but diversification dilutes focus." "The more you enjoy something, the better you're going to know it." "If you don't like property, what's the point in putting money into property? You can make investing strategies bespoke to you." "They can take everything from you except your experience and knowledge." "Only when you invest in the thing do you know how to invest in the thing. So paper trading, paper investing is just a game of Monopoly, doesn't mean anything." "The more money you have, you get the money working for you. The less money you have, you have to work for the money." Today, Steve is speaking with Rear Admiral Brian Luther. After more than 30 years in the US Navy and at the Pentagon, Brian is now president and CEO of the insurance firm Navy Mutual. Brian talks about what he learned about leadership in his time commanding an aircraft carrier in the Navy and how he has translated his skills into working in the private sector. He and Steve also discuss how leaders can move from a tactical mindset into a logistical one, and prepare your team for worst case scenarios. Key Takeaways: There might be differences between generations or people of different cultures, but fundamentally most people want the same things, and basic respect goes a long way. As a leader, don't get bogged down in tactics. Remember to think about the logistics, so there is a plan B if something goes awry. Technology can be an immensely useful tool, but don't get overly dependent on it. Tune in to hear more about: The three stages of leadership (7:46) Conducting business in volatile regions (12:28) How a tabletop drill can reveal important weaknesses in your organization's crisis response (18:48) Standout Quotes: “You have to very clearly articulate to the people what you want done. And if it's very specific, you say, ‘I want this done,' and if it's generic, you say, ‘I want this outcome,' right? You can't say I want a general outcome when you have something specific in mind, because they're going to go off and do it whatever way you want. But if you're very clear, ‘I want this done this way,' or ‘I just want this outcome,' and you decide, delegate, disappear, you'd be amazed at what people can do.” - Brian Luther “If you go there and give them an opportunity to see you as just who you are, and learn them just as they are, you find that there's more in common than people would give credit for. So I would always say, before you go internationally, take some time to learn where you're going and respect the culture that you're going to be operating in.” - Brian Luther “There are tremendous benefits associated with technology, but any strength pushed too far is a weakness [...]. Don't be overreliant on something, and you put all your eggs in that one basket and you lose it, and then you don't have a second or a third option. You should be asking yourself, ‘What if I lose this, what if they figure out a way to foil that?' Because, remember, we put something out there, and in a strategic competition, there's move-countermove all the time. […] So use it as a tool, but don't be totally dependent on it that if someone takes that tool away from you, your whole organization collapses.” - Brian Luther Mentioned in this episode: Dear InfoSec Read the transcript of this episode Subscribe to the ISF Podcast wherever you listen to podcasts Connect with us on LinkedIn and Twitter From the Information Security Forum, the leading authority on cyber, information security, and risk management.
This episode features an interview with Alex Saric, CMO at Ivalua, a company that empowers businesses to effectively manage all categories of spend and all suppliers, increasing profitability, improving ESG performance, lowering risk, and improving employee productivity. In this conversation, Alex shares his insights into pitching to and engaging with analysts, and how Ivalua has lead in reports since he joined the organization. He also dives into the ways he supports his team in building a dynamic website and when events with significant impact aren't measurable in terms of ROI. Key Takeaways:There is a strategy to sharing your value with analysts in order to lead in their reports. Sharing strategically chosen customer stories and assessing what influences each analyst can go a long way. In addition to the basics of creating a great website and tracking traffic, you need to create a dynamic website. Empowering your team to make minor changes and request major changes can allow you to adjust quickly and improve your website strategy. There is a tendency to focus on fixing problems, but don't forget to also assess how to improve and scale what is working well. Quote: Yes, I'll say when I joined, we at the time were not a leader in almost any of these reports that were out there. I think we had broken into one. In the 7 years, and knock on wood, I don't want to jinx myself, we've been the leader in every single report from Gartner and Forrester since then. And I'd say, you know, what I really did, it was probably one of my first priorities, given how important it is in our industry, I reached out to the analysts, started meeting one-on-one with the key analysts there. And of course, you know, I'm going to tell them my pitch, but they're smart enough to know take it with a grain of salt. I think the important thing is to start introducing them to customers because that's where you get a lot of credibility, if the customers back up what you're saying. And you can be very strategic. So, you know, I was very careful in, the competitor that was kind of the top competitor at the time, making sure I introduced the analyst to customers that had switched from that competitor, which would privately both talk about us, but also kind of badmouth, their past vendor and that really helped kind of flip the switch and start building credibility what I was saying was actually true. And also improving the rankings. And besides the rankings, they're also influencing a lot of deals behind the scenes and I think they start recommending us a lot more after that. Rob looks into the contentious topic of heat pumps versus gas boilers within the context of the UK's energy policy. With a critical eye, he discusses the government's shifting stance on energy solutions, including the potential abandonment of plans to ban new gas boilers by 2035. KEY TAKEAWAYS There is a strong skepticism regarding the effectiveness of heat pumps in the UK, particularly due to the age and structure of much of the housing stock, which may not be suitable for such systems. The UK government's energy policies have been inconsistent, with frequent changes regarding the ban on gas boilers and the push for heat pumps, leading to confusion and uncertainty in the housing market. The financial burden of transitioning to heat pumps or other energy-efficient systems is a significant concern, as the costs can be prohibitive for many homeowners, especially when compared to traditional gas boilers. There is a call for increased investment in various energy sources, including fossil fuels and nuclear power, to ensure affordable energy and support economic growth, rather than solely focusing on green policies. A more stable and affordable energy policy could lead to increased disposable income for consumers, allowing them to make more choices regarding energy systems, including potentially opting for heat pumps in the future. BEST MOMENTS "It's important to have a look at the latest news because that can impact the long-term housing plan for this country." "When you look and realize that most of our housing stock in the UK consists of some form of late Victorian or early Edwardian, heat pumps are not suitable for the housing stock in general." "If you give someone an option of installing a heat pump that may or may not work at the cost of say 10,000 pounds, or they can get a new gas boiler for say 5,000 pounds, most people are gonna go down the gas boiler route." Summer talks about how we can all learn to access miracles in every moment of our day-to-day lives. She shares why this is a powerful way to create a gratitude mindset, why money matters less than you might think and reminds us why we don’t need to search for magic; it already exists. KEY TAKEAWAYS There is beauty and magic around us all the time, but chasing the big things can prevent us from recognising this. The more we start to recognise the phenomenal things around us, in our every day, the more of this magic we will bring to our lives. Many people spend their lives searching for the material things that will bring them contentment but then realise this is not the answer. We can’t dismiss or bypass the internal work that needs doing to find contentment and happiness. Money and things are not the answer. BEST MOMENTS “We often wait for grand earth-shattering events, forgetting that magic resides in the ordinary, the everyday” “Gratitude is like a magnet, it’s the fastest way to bring in more of the magic” “Expensive possessions can leave a fleeting sense of satisfaction…but they cannot expand to the deeper needs of our soul” HOST BIO I am Summer. Ken Rusk is author of the WSJ bestselling book "Blue-Collar Cash" and highly successful entrepreneur in the trades of Rusk Industries. His insights have been featured in Forbes, USA Today, Fox Business, and more. In this episode, Ken dives deep into three limiting beliefs about leading and scaling successful blue collar businesses. The first is the preposterous myth that a blue collar career in the trades is not a viable path to fulfillment and impact. We quickly dispatch that nonsense and celebrate how that trend is changing. The second limit is for those that choose the blue collar path, they can let their identity be narrowly defined by their skill or craft. This also afflicts white collar workers promoted to leadership levels who often feel it is only up to them to get a certain job done. This stunts their growth, locking them in as a solopreneur. Ken reframes this identity to honor your skill while also unlocking the power of scale. He also compares the satisfaction of a job well done versus the joy of helping others do a job well. The third limit is the belief that we can't fine motivated employees. Here Ken reframes from motivating to inspiring. He shares his specific methods for interviewing, clarifying, and reinforcing inspired intrapreneurs, who can take your business to levels beyond your imagination. He has a great take on renaming "goals" to "timed paths to success." For an empowering employee development opportunity, check out his impactful course, "The Path to a Successful Life" at www.KenRusk.com. These 8 short lessons with some guided reflection is a powerful way to help your employees as individuals or as a book club team effort to define their individual life focus that puts them in total control of achieving it. Simon explores the question of whether investing in student property is a wise decision. The discussion highlights two distinct types of student accommodation: traditional houses converted into Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs) and purpose-built student blocks. Simon examines the importance of location, quality, and understanding the academic cycle when investing in student properties KEY TAKEAWAYS There are two main types of student properties: traditional shared houses (HMOs) that can be a good investment, and purpose-built student accommodation, which is generally not recommended due to various limitations. Successful student accommodation should be located close to universities and maintained to a high standard. Properties that are too far from campus or not well-kept tend to struggle with occupancy. Timing is crucial when investing in student properties. Many students start looking for accommodation in January or February for the following academic year, so it's important to have properties ready well in advance. Beyond students, properties can be repurposed for young professionals or other types of tenants, providing flexibility and potential for higher returns if the student market is oversaturated. Investing in purpose-built student accommodation can lead to high costs, limited exit strategies, and potential issues with long-term value. Traditional HMOs offer better opportunities for capital growth and tenant stability. BEST MOMENTS "There are two different types of student property, one of which I would not touch with a barge pole, and you should not invest in that type of student property, in my opinion." "It's got to be very high accommodations. Don't think student accommodation is a slum alternative, not very good accommodation. Absolutely not." "If you buy a purpose-built property like this, you are paying a very high price... you're paying far more than the bricks and mortar value." "Investing in a purpose-built student accommodation block is probably better than doing no investment at all, but I think it's a little bit of a lazy way to invest." "When you set it up correctly, student property can be very hands-off. It's not as intensive as another HMO where you see the tenants turning over a bit more often." In this episode, guest host Linda Odermott delve into regulatory reforms in the legal profession. Linda discusses significant changes, including the introduction of regulatory sandboxes in states like Arizona, which allow for innovative legal services to be tested in a controlled environment. The episode highlights Arizona's initiatives to improve access to justice through alternative business structures and the creation of licensed paraprofessionals. These reforms aim to diversify legal service providers and enhance the availability of legal support, particularly in underserved areas. Key Takeaways: There is a push for legal regulation reform due to high costs and limited access to legal services, with federal regulations estimated to cost around $2.1 trillion annually. Arizona introduced a "regulatory sandbox" allowing businesses to operate with reduced regulations for a set period to encourage innovation while maintaining consumer protection. After the trial, lawmakers evaluate what worked. Arizona's LP program allows non-attorney professionals to provide specific legal services, such as document preparation, giving legal advice, and court appearances, in limited practice areas like family law, civil law, administrative law, and misdemeanor criminal law. Two-thirds of Arizona counties are considered "legal deserts," with fewer than one lawyer per 1,000 residents, further necessitating reforms to improve access to legal assistance. Alternative Business Structures allows legal practice entities to be owned or managed by non-lawyers, provided only licensed lawyers practice law. LegalZoom, for example, has entered Arizona's legal market through an ABS license. Additional areas for LPs to practice, such as juvenile dependency and adoption, are under consideration, indicating ongoing evolution in Arizona's approach to legal service delivery. In this episode, Therese Markow and Dr. Hussam Mahmoud discuss the vulnerability of bridges to climate change. When we think about climate-related disasters, hurricanes, floods, and wildfires come to mind. Probably the last thing we think about is a bridge collapsing, but we should. With over half a million bridges in the US, each with a life expectancy of 75 years, it is more important than ever to consider the role of climatic factors on bridge stability. Dr. Mahmoud discusses how flooding, extreme temperatures, erosion, and extreme heat are affecting the bridges and he emphasizes the need for proactive inspection and maintenance to mitigate these risks. Key Takeaways: There are approximately 600,000 bridges across the US. Of the long-span bridges, there are about 6,000. Many of these bridges are old, some are in poor condition, and all are affected by climate change. Owing to the passenger and huge amount of industrial traffic crossing bridges, a collapse could cost trillions of dollars to the economy. Bridges are built for a life span of about 75 years, with proper maintenance and care. There was a bridge-building boom in the 1960s and earlier - and the majority were built over 50 years ago. "Generally speaking, bridges are relatively very safe. Even if you lose an element or something that is carrying the load ends up breaking or cracking, bridges are phenomenal in being able to redistribute the load and figure out how to carry the load with the remaining elements." — Dr. Hussam Mahmoud Connect with Dr. Hussam Mahmoud: Professional Bio: https://www.engr.colostate.edu/~hmahmoud/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/hussam-mahmoud-4b16754 Connect with Therese: Website: www.criticallyspeaking.net Threads: @critically_speaking Email: theresemarkow@criticallyspeaking.net Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. Dr. Linda Backman shares her personal journey into the world of past life regression and connecting with the soul. She discusses the different types of souls, including Earth-based souls, interplanetary souls, and angelic realm souls. Each type of soul has its own characteristics and purpose. Dr. Backman explains the role of the higher self and guides in guiding and supporting souls on their spiritual journey. She also emphasizes the importance of being of service and making a difference in the world. In this conversation, Linda Backman discusses the concept of interplanetary and Earth-based souls. She shares stories of individuals who have discovered their soul origins through regression therapy, including a former priest who discovered he is an angelic realm soul. Linda also addresses the question of whether figures like Jesus and Mary Magdalene would be considered angelic realm souls, explaining that Jesus is an ascended guide and Mary Magdalene is an advanced Earth-based soul. She also explores the idea of soul streams and how souls connect with past loved ones on the other side. Linda provides insights into the journey of Earth-based souls after death and the role of the Earth High Council in guiding humanity. Key Takeaways: There are different types of souls, including Earth-based souls, interplanetary souls, and angelic realm souls. Earth-based souls have had many lives on Earth and are comfortable in human bodies. Interplanetary souls come from other planets or star systems and often have physical or emotional challenges. Angelic realm souls are emissaries of source energy and are known for their love, compassion, and non-judgment. The higher self is an aspect of the soul that guides and supports the individual throughout their lifetimes. Guides are beings that assist and support souls on their spiritual journey. Being of service and making a difference in the world is an important aspect of the soul's purpose. Regression therapy can help individuals discover their soul origins, whether they are interplanetary or Earth-based souls. Figures like Jesus and Mary Magdalene can come up in regression sessions, and while Jesus is an ascended guide, Mary Magdalene is an advanced Earth-based soul. Soul streams are the interconnectedness of souls, and souls can connect with past loved ones on the other side. The journey of Earth-based souls after death involves gradually elevating through the astral plane and rejoining their higher self. The Earth High Council, made up of experienced Earth-based souls, works together to guide humanity and receives input from interplanetary and angelic councils. You-est You® Resources for YOU! Each has distinct reasons and psychological patterns influencing their procrastination habits. Understanding what drives your procrastination is the first step in overcoming it. Procrastination is often a defense mechanism. Emotional barriers, sometimes called "heart walls," can significantly impede productivity by harboring subconscious fears or past traumas. Creative individuals often delay actions, waiting for moments of inspiration. This is a common subconscious process involving brain activity working in the background. Compassion towards oneself is essential when dealing with procrastination, acknowledging it as a product of one's environment and conditioning rather than laziness or incompetence. Notable Quotes: "Procrastination is not something inherently wrong with you… it's a signpost." "We're either moving out of a place of fear or a place of joy… most of us are operating at a place of fear 95% of the time." "You are doing the best you can with the information you have on hand at that specific time." "You can do whatever you want to do… But you have to believe that you are able to do it." "Procrastination is a big deal… If you just would just have done it, you would've been fine."
Do you ever talk with God (or whatever you call that voice of wisdom that seems to know better than you do)? In other words, rather than praying or meditating and hoping something magical happens, do you ever pray or meditate to set an intention and then quiet your mind to receive valuable clarity, wisdom, and guidance specific to your needs? I usually do this first thing in the morning (during my SAVERS) and right before bed, and when I do, I consistently receive what I refer to as “downloads.” I call them downloads because they enter my consciousness so fast that I find myself writing as quickly as possible without any conscious thought. I'm not thinking; I'm just taking dictation. In today's episode, I'll share how you can use periods of purposeful Silence to receive wisdom and create extraordinary breakthroughs without needing to follow a specific spiritual path. Whether you're religious, atheist, agnostic, or simply someone searching for answers, this process can be transformative for you. We all deal with struggle and difficulty, and as we face the hardships in life, we each have the invitation to be bitter or be better. Join my friend Leslie Begin and I as we talk through what it looks like to make the right choice. Leslie Begin is an incredible wife, mom of 6, coach, and entrepreneur. She has been an encouragement to me for over 7 plus years of friendship, and more than anything, she is an incredible human. Key Takeaways: There are times in our lives when we unknowingly choose bitterness. It's important to really examine ourselves and see if a root of bitterness has taken hold in our hearts. What doesn't get transformed gets transferred. If you aren't willing to do the work in your own life, some of that baggage will be transferred to your kids. Don't put that burden on them. Examine your set of survival skills and determine where you turn in a crisis. It may be time to discard some of those skills and acquire new ones. Triggers are invitations or information. Rather than accepting an invitation to overreact and further aggravate a stressful decision, choose to use your triggers as information you learn and grow from.
