In today's episode, Jordan joins us to talk about those leaders that can be viewed as abrasive, harsh, and maybe even bullies. He explains how he uses the ethos of the Navy Seals to complete the full picture of the workplace warrior, of which these types of people usually have an incomplete view. We examine the four types of warriors outlined in Jordan's book, some of the positions more likely to be taken as abrasive regardless of industry, and the importance of responding to your perceived experience in a healthy way. We also look at ways in which social media may be playing a part in fostering abrasiveness, like dehumanizing our interactions and lowering our tolerance for discomfort.  Jordan shares with us the importance of using the proper framework when communicating, especially when the interaction is not face-to-face, as well as an excellent example of giving negative feedback in a compassionate way. We discuss compassion vs sympathy, learning to speak the language of those you are leading, and how to evaluate the success of your interactions. Lastly, we talk about how important it is to have a way to destress, giving examples of useful apps or other technology and methods.      In this episode you will hear:    The four types of workplace warriors The role of social media in regards to abrasive, aggressive behavior Learning to communicate effectively Recommendations for mindfulness apps to destress and meditate Actionable tips for giving negative feedback   Jordan Goldrich is a Master Corporate Executive Coach, Certified Stakeholder Centered Coach, and Professional Certified Coach who partners with leaders and executives to achieve business results while developing their organizations, their reports, and their own leadership skills. About Jordan: Jordan Goldrich partners with senior executives to be completely authentic, fulfill their mission, and drive results without damaging relationships® These are strong leaders with an uncommon desire for results, who take charge, lead their teams, and accomplish the mission. Sometimes, they are experienced as abrasive and occasionally as bullying. If they are highly analytic, technical, and introverted, they can be perceived as unavailable, overly tactical or lacking confidence. Female executives have the challenge of being perceived as abrasive for behavior accepted from men.    Jordan is co-author of the Amazon best seller, Workplace Warrior: People Skills For the No-BullShit Executive. He is producer and host of the podcast, Workplace Warrior®: Drive Results Without Damaging Relationships® on Apple, Spotify, Stitcher and Amazon. Jordan is Founder and CEO of Workplace Warrior®, Inc. a consulting firm which provides executive coaching and leadership development.   As Chief Operations Officer of a specialized behavioral health company, Jordan was instrumental in creating an 800% revenue increase over seven years, attaining a California Knox-Keene license, and executing an acquisition by WellPoint Health Networks. He created a customer driven culture and utilized cross-functional team problem solving methods rooted in Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma.     In this episode, Jordan discussed: The challenge of being a target vs. a victim Applying the concept of “blending with force” in the soft martial arts.  How to separate your self-esteem from how others speak to you Understanding how others are wired  Appreciating workplace warriors and cultivating compassion Key Takeaways After making a point, giving information, or making a suggestion,  ask “what am I missing?” and “why won't this work?” Especially do that if you're talking to people that are lower on the hierarchy.  They know information and data that you don't have.  Separate how you feel about yourself, meaning your self esteem, from how others treat you and talk to you. This requires knowing and managing your vulnerabilities and strengths so that you can remain calm, confident, and in control when someone throws psychological darts or shoots psychological arrows at you.  Understand how the brain of the person who's being disrespectful or difficult is wired. Most abrasive CEOs or executives do not intend to hurt people. Often, they develop a communication style that's developed by their culture or other influences.  Appreciate people's warrior spirit because many of their traits that are experienced as negative comes from their desire to succeed, to lead well, and drive results.  Cultivate compassion for difficult people, even though you don't think they don't deserve it. “My goal is to react in a way that disarms them, supports them, and helps them save face. I can only do that when I'm feeling confident enough to separate what they're saying from how they're saying it and to keep open the idea that they might have a good point if I can keep myself from being triggered to attack back or withdraw.” —  Jordan Goldrich Connect with Jordan:  For executives wanting a complimentary executive coaching conversation: jordan@jordangoldrich.com  Website: www.workplacewarriorinc.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/jordangoldrich1 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jordan.goldrich Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jordangoldrich/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jgoldrich/

In this episode, Jordan discusses: “Imposter Syndrome” and self-sabotage What is our upper limit? Four reasons why we have an upper limit A different way of responding to our upper limit internal conversation Key Takeaways Many high-level leaders struggle with a voice in their head that says that they're not as good as people think they are and that they should be concerned if  people find out.  Our upper limit is a conscious or unconscious thermostat that regulates the amount of success, love, money, and abundance that we're entitled to.  There are four reasons why we have an upper limit. The first is that we are fundamentally flawed, second is the fear that we are being disloyal to your roots or the people from your past, third is the believe that success brings a bigger burden and lastly, the crime of outshining - talented children are given a lot of attention and they learn that they shouldn't steal attention from others. Rather than trying to heal our internal wounds or change our internal conversation, we should reflect to identify what positive state is trying to break through.    “I started considering what positive things are trying to break through even though I was feeling self doubts, or I was feeling unsuccessful, or that I didn't fit in. It ended up making a real big difference for me.” —  Jordan Goldrich   Get the complimentary guide: How To Select An Executive Coach at www.selectcoach.workplacewarrior.com    Get the Am I Abrasive Self Test at abrasive.workplacewarrior.com  Connect with Jordan:  Get the complimentary guide: How To Select An Executive Coach at www.selectcoach.workplacewarrior.com  Get the Am I Abrasive Self Test at abrasive.workplacewarrior.com  Website: www.workplacewarriorinc.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/jordangoldrich1 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jordan.goldrich Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jordangoldrich/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jgoldrich/

About Jordan Goldrich: Jordan is a Master Corporate Executive Coach who partners with senior and developing leaders and executives who have a strong desire for results, who take charge, lead their teams, and accomplish the mission. His mission is to help them be completely authentic, fulfill their mission, and morale while taking performance to an even higher level. Jordan leverages his background as a Chief Operations Officer, Master Corporate Executive Coach, Professional Certified Coach, and Licensed Clinical Social Worker. He is co-author of the Amazon bestseller, Workplace Warrior®: People Skills For The No-Bullshit Executive, and producer and host of the Podcast Workplace Warrior: Drive Results Without Damaging Relationships®. “When I realized that I needed the data and perspectives from everyone, even people I did not respect, I learned to cultivate compassion for people my brain was telling me don't deserve it.” Jordan Goldrich, MCEC   In this episode, Jordan and JJ Flizanes discuss: Most executives perceived as a bully, don't want to hurt people. Most think the pressure to change their communication style is politically correct bull.  These leaders must find their authentic motivation to change Part of that motivation is knowing you need data and perspectives from everyone to be successful. Even people you don't respect know things that you don't know.    Key Takeaways The most effective leaders use a balance of “hard power” and “soft power” If you want to lead effectively, you have to talk to people in the language that they speak Some people will be offended by you because of their background and personality- This is not in your control. Being the boss has never been harder. Recent events in the corporate world, Hollywood and politics have focused negative attention on the kind of tough, demanding leaders who used to be valued for getting things done, labeling many as bullies and accusing them of fostering a “hostile workplace environment.” They are demeaned and called names, as society demands that they change their ways. But what if the very thing that makes them so abrasive is also their superpower?  As a Master Corporate Executive Coach, Jordan Goldrich works with senior executives who are committed to success, who lead their teams, and who accomplish the mission. Sometimes, they are experienced as abrasive and occasionally perceived as bullying. He helps them drive results without damaging relationships. As COO, Jordan helped build a healthcare company from 4 employees to 65 and a sale to a large insurance company. He has over 35 years’ experience working successfully with Fortune 500 and closely held companies. Post By: Adam Turteltaub Jordan Goldrich works with bullies for a living. He is an executive coach and author of Workplace Warrior: People Skills for the No-BS Executive, which is available for free on his website. As an executive coach, he’s come to know many people with a reputation as a bully, and leverages his own past where he was also perceived as being too aggressive. His take on workplace bullies, not surprisingly is different, seeing them as warriors who have to be taught a different way of working. In this podcast he argues that bullies don’t want to hurt people. They should be seen, he believes, as people who have an uncommon desire to succeed and, due to a variety of factors, including cultural and familial ones, do so in ways that many find abrasive at the least and well over the line at most. So, what should you do when encountering a bully? For one, not shy away from the issue.  Instead, you need to be direct, describe their behavior and the impact of it, including the potential liabilities it is creating. Listen in to learn more about how to confront and work for bullies, and what to do if you are one yourself.

Growing up in a loud New York family, Jordan's communication style was very direct. This worked well for him as a Chief Operating Officer. After being fired from his job, Jordan realized that some may have found his direct communication style to be abrasive. So, he started practicing compassion cultivation and mindfulness. As an executive coach, Jordan teaches others to be respectful, tactful and diplomatic, while being authentic.  He shares these powerful nuggets of life wisdom: - cultivate compassion - practice mindfulness - if someone is suffering or in pain, try to alleviate that person's pain - instead of viewing yourself as a victim, redefine it as a target - ask yourself what is the opportunity for growth in the challenge Website: https://www.workplacewarriorinc.com  Twitter: https://twitter.com/jordangoldrich1  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jordan.goldrich  Instagram https://www.instagram.com/jordangoldrich  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jgoldrich/  tags: Jordan, Goldrich, executive, coach, leadership, development, Workplace Warrior, writer, author, podcasat, host, storiesthatempower.com, story, stories, that, empower, empowering, empowerment, inspire, inspiring, inspiration, encourage, encouraging, encouragement, hope, light, podcast, Sean

Do you feel like a warrior when you go to work? Do you feel like you MUST be a warrior?Warriors are tough. Is that a necessity for getting people to work together and produce desired results? My conversation with Jordan Goldrich, author of Workplace Warrior, had some surprises. The subtitle of his book is "People Skills for the No B.S. Executive." He immediately brought up the word, abrasive, to describe many leaders. Not a surprise!
