Did Detroit Tigers make the best choice at third base by cutting Jace Jung?

Producer's note: After recording, the Detroit Tigers optioned Jace Jung to Triple-A Toledo, which means he won't make the Tigers' Opening Day roster. Keep that in mind as you listen to this episode. With 10 days until Opening Day, the position battles for the Tigers in spring training have heated up to the max. The Tigers have 10 of 13 position players locked in, three of five starting pitchers locked in, and seven of eight relief pitchers locked in. A lot could happen in the final week of camp, but the Opening Day roster is coming into focus with clear frontrunners in those competitions. Still, the Tigers have a lot of questions to answer as the regular season approaches.Center fielder Parker Meadows has been ruled out for Opening Day with an upper arm nerve issue, so how long will Wenceel Pérez be relied upon as the primary center fielder? Without Jace Jung, is a platoon of Zach McKinstry and Andy Ibáñez good enough at third base? Most notably, should the Tigers have just put Jung on the roster because of his long-term upside on offense?Other topics include Javier Báez and Spencer Torkelson testing out new positions, Riley Greene in center field, the Spring Breakout prospect game (Bryce Rainer!), and what we saw from Andrew Navigato. Another thing: Did Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris do enough this offseason to prepare the Tigers for success this season? Follow Evan on X/Twitter here. Our first visit to OPACY this season was an anticipated debut, a miracle of (not)rain, and a much heralded yet underwhelming Jackson vs Jackson smackdown. And lots of attention to the number seven. Elly has us considering a road trip to CIN, and Vaughn makes us think Worcester is nice this time of year. Zach has six runs to his credit in only one game, but the wrong direction. Spencer is down for the count but now we know more about internal braces, so there's that. Brianna Wakefield's knuckleball is our favorite pitch of the week. Julio Urias is buried in misdemeanors of  his own making, and Ohtani's interpreter apparently used his powers for evil.  Venezuela hosts their 14th annual Women's Baseball Championship and prepares for Thunder Bay. NHL – Connor Bedard, as expected, taken first in the NHL draft by the Chicago Blackhawks The Chicago Blackhawks have selected Connor Bedard with the first pick in the NHL draft. The move should kick-start a hopeful new era for Chicago. Bedard is a highly skilled offensive forward who’s drawn comparisons to Connor McDavid and Sidney Crosby. Bedard is the second No. 1 pick in Blackhawks history. Chicago took Patrick Kane first in 2007 and he helped form the core of a team that won three Stanley Cup championships. Anaheim selected Sweden forward Leo Carlsson second, followed Columbus picking Michigan freshman Adam Fantilli. The Blackhawks took center Oliver Moore with the 19th pick in a previous trade with Tampa Bay.  The Red Wings also had two first round selections. With the 9th pick, Detroit took, center Nate Danielson and with pick 17, Detroit grabbed Swedish defenseman, Axel Sandin Pellikka.  The draft continues today with rounds 2 through 7 starting at 11 a.m. NHL – Gary Bettman urges fans to boo him, honors David Poile to kick off NHL draft NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman brought one of the league's most beloved general managers with him to the stage to kick off the draft. That may have helped keep the usual booing of Bettman to a minimum. David Poile is the longest-tenured and winningest general manager in league history. Poile is retiring Friday after overseeing the startup of the Nashville Predators as an expansion franchise in 1997. Bettman then told fans they weren't booing him up to their usual standards. He urged them to do better and made sure to appreciate them as the boos grew louder. With Dunning an out from a shutout, Andy Ibanez legged out an infield single, a call that stood following a Texas challenge, and Kerry Carpenter homered. White Sox 11, Angels 5 – Zavala homers twice, drives in 4 runs as the White Sox beat the Angels 11-5 Seby Zavala had his second two-homer game of the season and drove in four runs to help the Chicago White Sox break out of an offensive slump with an 11-5 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday night. Kansas City wasted a 4-0 lead and dropped to 0-15 in games started by Jordan Lyles, who allowed three runs and six hits in six-plus innings. The plane carrying Wembanyama from France arrived at Newark International Airport outside of New York City on Monday. He’s widely expected to be the No. 1 pick on Thursday by the San Antonio Spurs. NBA – Suns continue whirlwind of change under new owner Mat Ishbia Mat Ishbia’s five-month tenure as the new owner of the Phoenix Suns has produced a whirlwind of change. Nobody seems completely safe as the Michigan native continues his quest to deliver Phoenix its first NBA title. The aggressive owner oversaw his latest big move Sunday, when the Suns put together the framework for a trade that would send 12-time All-Star Chris Paul, Landry Shamet and other compensation to the Washington Wizards in exchange for three-time All-Star Bradley Beal. More moves could be on the horizon. Clark’s mother, Lise, died of breast cancer in 2013, which sent him spiraling. The road back led him to leave college at Oklahoma State for a fresh start at Oregon. It involved more than one crisis in confidence. It hit a crescendo Sunday when Clark held off Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler for his first major title. Well, it's been a real sh*t sandwich of a homestand that began with two wins over the Mets, followed by a 4 game losing streak, followed by an absolute gem from Marcus Stroman yesterday. With two games remaining against the owners of MLB's best record, who knows what to expect at this point. We talk about Kyle Hendricks' return, Miles Mastrobuoni inexplicably hitting in the 1 and 2 hole, Justin Steele's first rough home start in a year, and of course, North Shore Adult Diapers. Then (at 19:00 in) we interview the author of Aisle 228, Sandra Marchetti (FanGraphs, Baseball Prospectus)! Sandra shares some of her poetry, Adam chimes in with one of our own, and we all pine for Zach McKinstry. Aisle 228 is about the Chicago Cubs, listening to baseball on the radio, and going to games with my father. The book highlights milestones across Major League Baseball of the past 50 years and culminates in the Cubs 2016 World Series win. Baseball fans of any team will enjoy this title, along with amateur historians and readers of literary nonfiction—it also makes an excellent gift, especially for Father's Day! The book can be found on Amazon, barnesandnoble.com, and directly from the publisher, Texas A&M University Press, here: https://www.tamupress.com/book/9781622889556/aisle-228/. Leave us a 5 star rating on iTunes after you buy Sandra's book!

Zach McKinstry drove in the go-ahead run and Jake Rogers had two hits and an RBI as Detroit snapped a six-game skid. Turnbull allowed one run on six hits and one walk with six strikeouts. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch removed Báez from the game in the third, one inning after Báez appeared to lose track of the outs and ran into a double play. Facing Blue Jays right-hander Chris Bassitt, Báez doubled off the left-field wall with one out in the second inning. It was Báez’s first extra-base hit of the season, but he didn’t run hard out of the box, apparently thinking he had homered. Báez broke for third and rounded the base on Akil Baddo’s liner to center, and was easily doubled off to end the inning. NHL – National Hockey League Last Night Tampa Bay Lightning 5, Detroit Red Wings 0 Philadelphia Flyers 5, Chicago Blackhawks 4 – OT End Regular Season for Detroit and Chicago Lightning 5, Red Wings 0 – Point gets 50th, 51st goals, Lightning beat Red Wings 5-0 Brayden Point scored his 50th and 51st goals, backup Brian Elliott made 32 saves, and the Tampa Bay Lightning stopped a four-game losing streak with a 5-0 win over the Detroit Red Wings. It was the regular-season finale for both teams. Point joined Steven Stamkos and Vincent Lecavalier as the only Lightnning players to reach the 50-goal mark. Alex Killorn, Brandon Hagel and Michael Eyssimont also scored for the playoff-bound Lightning. The Red Wings, despite ending the season 0-4-1, finished with their most points since their last playoff team in 2015-16. Flyers 4, Blackhawks 3 – OT – Toews, Blackhawks lose 5-4 to Flyers in finale Jonathan Toews scored in his final game with the Chicago Blackhawks, but Ivan Provorov scored 3:09 into overtime to lift the Philadelphia Flyers to a 5-4 victory in the season finale for each team. Toews won three Stanley Cup titles in 15 seasons with Chicago, but general manager Kyle Davidson announced earlier in the day that the team would not re-sign its longtime captain. Toews turns 35 on April 29, and the lowly Blackhawks are rebuilding. Toews had a chance to win the game in overtime, but he was denied by Felix Sandstrom on a breakaway with about 2:15 remaining. Provorov then closed it out for Philadelphia, beating Alex Stalock for his 6th goal of the season. NHL – Blackhawks say Toews will not return to team next season Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews will not return to the team next year, ending a wildly successful run that included three Stanley Cup championships in 15 seasons. General manager Kyle Davidson says the team will not re-sign its longtime center, who turns 35 on April 29. Toews was selected by Chicago with the No. 3 pick in the 2006 draft. He was just 20 years old when he became the 34th captain in team history in July 2008. Toews could decide to retire after missing a chunk of this season with what he described as symptoms of long COVID-19 and chronic immune response syndrome. NBA – National Basketball Association Tonight NBA Play In Tournament Chicago Bulls at Miami Heat, 7:00 p.m. Oklahoma City Thunder at Minnesota Timberwolves 9:30 p.m. NBA – The losing is done, NBA teams now await 7-foot-3 Wembanyama There are very specific rules that NBA teams must follow right now when it comes to mentioning the name of 7-foot-3 French star Victor Wembanyama. He’s got big-man height and elite guard skills and will be the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft. But because he isn’t officially in the draft yet, teams can’t discuss him publicly. So they don’t. And they don’t have to, either. Everyone knows what the teams who’ll be in the NBA lottery next month are hoping to have happen. They want the No. 1 pick and the right to select Wembanyama.  The Detroit Pistons have the best odds to win the number one pick. NFL – AP sources: Snyder agrees to $6.05B sale of NFL’s Commanders Two people with knowledge of the situation tell The Associated Press that a group led by Josh Harris and Mitchell Rales and including Magic Johnson has an agreement in principle to buy the Washington Commanders from longtime owner Dan Snyder. Harris and Rales are set to pay $6.05 billion for the storied NFL franchise. It’s the most money a professional sports franchise in North American has been sold for, topping the $4.65 billion paid by Walmart heir Rob Walton’s group for the Denver Broncos last year. The sale of the Commanders is pending approval from the rest of the league’s owners. That could happen as soon as their next meeting in Minnesota in May. NFL – First QB helmet designed to help reduce concussions approved The first quarterback-specific helmet designed to help reduce concussions has been approved for use by the NFL and NFLPA, the AP has learned. The helmet, manufactured by Vicis, reduces severity of helmet-to-ground impacts, which league data says account for approximately half of quarterback concussions, including the one suffered by Miami’s Tua Tagovailoa last season when his head slammed violently against the turf during a Thursday night game against Cincinnati. The helmet performed 7% better than the most popular helmet worn by quarterbacks last season, the league said in a memo sent to team executives on Thursday. Golf – PGA – Hovland leads RBC Heritage; Masters champ Rahm struggles Viktor Hovland shot a 7-under 64 to take the first-round lead at the rain-delayed RBC Heritage. Masters champion Jon Rahm was eight shots back after a frustrating 1-over 72 and acknowledged the fatigue from his win at Augusta National affected him. Hovland also shared the first-round lead at the Masters and finished tied for seventh. He led Brian Harman by one shot at Harbour Town. Aaron Rai and Jimmy Walker were also 6 under but did not finish their rounds before darkness halted play. The RBC Heritage is a designated event on the PGA Tour this year, giving it a $20 million purse and a strong field. Boston Marathon – Survival diaries: Decade on, Boston Marathon bombing echoes In the decade since the Boston Marathon bombing, the streets and sidewalks have been repaired, and memorials stand at the site of the explosions to remember the three who died. But the healing continues. And, for many, the race itself is an important part. Bombing survivors with no previous interest in distance running made it a bucket-list goal. For others, friends and family entered on their behalf.
