The Nats lost 8-3 to the visiting Cubs on Tuesday evening to open their six game home stand. Al & Tim start with Trevor Williams; who was taken out in the pivotal top of the 5th and was charged with five runs allowed. Williams threw a shutout last week, but this outing was in line with his season that sports a 6.03 ERA in a dozen starts.(07:30) Five bullpen arms were needed and the first one used struggled the most. Andrew Chafin relieved Williams in the 5th and walked two of the three hitters he faced. Jackson Rutledge interestingly was used in the top of the 9th in mop-up duty.(11:45) The offense scored three runs right away, but did nothing in the final six frames. Luis Garcia Jr. had a trio of hits and had a RBI single in the bottom of the 1st.(15:30) Jose Teña did not properly handle a grounder in the top of the 4th and it led to a big inning for Chicago to tie the game.(19:00) MacKenzie Gore will take the mound on Wednesday vs. the Cubs. Gore is tied with Boston's Garrett Crochet for the most strikeouts at 101.(23:25) ESPN's Jeff Passan handicapped every team and where they fit into the eventual Trade Deadline. Al & Tim respond to what he wrote about Kyle Finnegan and the Nats organization.
The Nats rallied in the top of the 9th, but couldn't make it to extras in Monday night's 4-3 loss in Atlanta. Mark & Al dig into the decision to not use Kyle Finnegan in the bottom of the 9th, where it was tied 3-3. Jackson Rutledge initially stayed in the game, but then was relieved by Andrew Chafin as opposed to Finnegan. The All-Star closer has not pitched since Game 1 of last Tuesday's doubleheader.(15:30) Jake Irvin gave up three runs off of seven hits in six innings of work. Al points out the troubling trend regarding Irvin's strikeouts, as he only had one on Monday night.(20:35) James Wood chopped his 1th homer of the season, but it was another quiet day at the plate for his teammates. Washington went 0 for 7 with RISP and struggled against Braves starter Grant Holmes.(27:10) The six game losing streak is now the longest in MLB and it seems that they are playing form behind every game. Michael Soroka takes the mound against his original team on Tuesday night.
The Nats totaled 15 hits on their way to an 11-6 triumph at the Reds on Saturday evening. Mark (From Cincinnati) & Al note Amed Rosario's biggest game yet since joining the team as he had four hits and a 3-run homer in the 6th to put Washington ahead for good.(07:00) Riley Adams had a big game with both the bat and his arm. Adams came through with a late 2-run single and threw out a pair of base stealers. Adams only has 22 at bats so far this season in the backup catcher role.(11:15) Trevor Williams had another rocky outing as he gave up four runs off of nine hits in just over five frames. Williams' ERA is up to 5.86 and his spot in the rotation is under closer scrutiny as Michael Soroka is poised to return soon from the IL.(16:20) Andrew Chafin excelled in his organizational debut as he recorded two strikeouts in relief of Williams to keep the 7-4 lead in tact through six innings. Mark relays his colorful impression of the veteran lefty who is full of personality.(23:00) MacKenzie Gore takes the mound on Sunday in the series rubber match. Gore currently leads all of MLB w/ 59 strikeouts this season in seven starts.
The Nats snapped their three game skid with a 4-2 victory on Thursday night at the Phillies. Mark (From Philadelphia) & Al open with the eventful top of the 6th where Washington scored all of their runs. Luis Garcia Jr. not only had a RBI single, but also stole home on a double steal for the final insurance run.(08:10) Keibert Ruiz knocked in Nathaniel Lowe on what was ruled a three base error by Bryce Harper, but should it have been scored as a triple?(12:45) Brad Lord lasted five innings and recorded his first Big League "W". The timing is rather interesting as his rotation spot is at stake if Michael Soroka returns from the IL in the near future.(18:45) The bullpen came through for Lord as three relievers combined for four scoreless frames. Jose A. Ferrer tossed two innings, Jorge Lopez pitched the 8th, and Kyle Finnegan bounced back with his 10th save of the season, the 2nd most in the NL.(25:00) The Nationals made their first bullpen transaction post Opening Day as they signed veteran Andrew Chafin and DFA'd Colin Poche. Chafin has been in the majors since 2014 and has a career ERA of 3.42. The lefty pitched well for AAA-Toledo last month before signing a major league deal with the Nats.(30:00) The road trip moves this weekend to Cincinnati for a three game set. Mitchell Parker will start the opener on Friday night vs. Hunter Greene. The Reds are 17-15 overall and are in 2nd place in their division.

With Opening Day just three days away, the Detroit Tigers still have tough decisions to make to finalize their 26-man roster before facing the Dodgers in Los Angeles. Three position players — Spencer Torkelson, Justyn-Henry Malloy and Jahmai Jones — are vying for one spot, while relievers Andrew Chafin, Brenan Hanifee and Brant Hurter are battling for a role in the bullpen. The roster battle became more complex after the Tigers signed outfielder Manuel Margot to a one-year contract, helping to cover the absence of center fielder Parker Meadows for at least another four weeks. The starting rotation is also set with five pitchers, and a pitcher making $10 million was sent to the bullpen. After the break, Dodgers beat writer Jack Harris joins the "Days of Roar" podcast to preview the Tigers' opening series against the star-studded Dodgers, discussing Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, and how the Dodgers built a model franchise. After talking to Jack, Evan and Mark tackle an intriguing question: Would Gleyber Torres consider moving off second base for this culture-driven Tigers team? Follow Evan on X/Twitter here. The Detroit Tigers have wrapped up their first week of spring training games, with just 24 days left until Opening Day on March 27 against the Dodgers in Los Angeles. Tigers TV analyst Andy Dirks joins the "Days of Roar" podcast to break down the upcoming season, both for the team and the broadcast booth. He answers these key questions, among other things: What's it like working with Jason Benetti and Dan Dickerson? How does it feel as a player to be in a roster battle? Should Jace Jung be the everyday third baseman? Meanwhile, the Tigers face some key injury concerns, with Matt Vierling and Parker Meadows sidelined. Those injuries leave questions about center field and the Opening Day roster. On the pitching side, Jackson Jobe is making a strong case for a rotation spot after two starts this spring. Other topics include roster predictions, Andrew Chafin's minor league deal and the upcoming first round of cuts. Follow Evan on X/Twitter here. Read Evan's most recent work here

The former t-ball line drive machine recounts his path to the Majors - from Notre Dame baseball to his time in Philly, to landing in the Motor City. What are the characteristics of a “glue guy”? And why, according to Matt, is the Tigers lineup full of them? Vierling explains some of the changes he's made to tap into more power at the plate, and the challenge of making those tweaks without fundamentally altering his approach. What does it feel like to hit a walk-off home run at Comerica Park? Hinch's contract extension and walk through why Andrew Chafin's return to the ball club is ideal for both parties. Later in the pod, the "Days of Roar" duo analyze the upside in the Tigers' roster and how the team would have to perform in order to open deep spending from ownership. The Milwaukee Brewers threw 10 1/3 innings of no-hit baseball on Sunday in Yankee Stadium ... and lost. The missed opportunity is a microcosm of the team's offensive struggles, but it was an otherwise healthy performance with the bats this week. Brewers reporter Curt Hogg and host JR Radcliffe discuss what's behind the bats' turnaround in September (spoiler alert: a little bit of luck) and if the offense can compete when the offense rolls around. Sunday's game featured the best of ace Corbin Burnes and a defensive play by Sal Frelick that ranks among the best in history. JR and Curt chat about Josh Donaldson, Andrew Chafin, Brice Turang and more. Remembrew When looks back at another memorable three-game set in Yankee Stadium in 1981, and Curt Blanche compares Burnes and Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields. Then, JR chats with Wade Miley, who himself threw a no-hitter a couple years ago with the Cincinnati Reds. He talks about his comfort in Milwaukee and the unusual highlights of his career. Hour 4: It's been a Mets morning after their comeback win in Arizona. Francisco Alvarez has been a lifesaver. Jerry wants Carlos Carrasco to give the team a chance tonight. The Yankees have a big chance to win a series today. They are holding their own without Judge but the AL is so tough that treading water might not be good enough. CLo is here for his final update of the day and has promised some great sound. Jerry can't believe he's 16 years older than Andrew Chafin. The Mets had a comeback win and the Yankees lost to the Orioles. Davey Martinez whined about Elly De La Cruz. Jordan Hicks made one of the worst throws ever to lose a game. Chris Russo thinks Adam Silver made ESPN fire Jeff Van Gundy. Jerry thinks it was simply a financial decision. Stephen A. Smith addressed his haters. Allan Houston knew Jalen Brunson was special while watching a very young Jalen mimic Knicks stars. Mike Fracnesa ripped the Jets for wanting something they have made very clear they do not want. Hard Knocks isn't what it used to be. Everyone is interested in this potential Jerry Jones documentary. In Moment of the Day, Sal doesn't understand the appeal of the NBA's in-season tournament. In the final segment of the show, a caller explains the origins of “band box” and Jerry shares crazy stories from recent concerts.
Hour 1: Sal is quick to cut off Jerry's open and scream that THE METS ARE BACK. Sal says Alvarez's HR was a Piazza-like moment. The season is back on. Sal has fully been sucked in. Jerry thinks 2-2 in the last 4 games before the break is good enough but Sal wants 3-1. The Mets have the talent to go on a real run. CLo is here but first the crew discusses signing up for Threads in case Twitter goes away. Jerry and Sal have some thoughts on CLo's outfit. Francisco Alvarez saved the Mets with two strikes and two outs in the 9th. Sal might get an Alvarez jersey. The Yankees bullpen had a very rare off night and the Orioles won their first game of this series. Jimmy Cordero was suspended for the rest of the season. Cameraman Pete Stendel was hit by an errant throw but gave a thumbs up leaving the field. The Nationals wanted the umpires to check Elly De La Cruz's bat and they did. Later on De La Cruz hit a 455 foot homerun and turned to point at the bat as the ball was leaving the yard. In the final segment of the hour, Jerry says it was strange to see three Yankees relievers all not have it on the same night. Sal says it was a disappointing loss but not a bad one because the bullpen can't be perfect every night. Tonight's start is a big one for Luis Severino and the Yankees with a chance to win this series. Hour 2: Jerry explains the NBA's in-season tournament to Sal and Sal strongly dislikes the idea. Both Jerry and Sal are highly skeptical that this will work. They don't like the format and want an incentive for the winning team if the tournament is going to exist. CLo returns and starts with Gary Cohen going nuts (in a good way) when Francisco Alvarez tied the game with 2 outs and 2 strikes in the 9th inning last night. Sal believes in the Mets again. Salma Hayek looks terrific at age 56. CLo has audio of the call from last night's Yankees game that Sal thought wasn't great. Jerry and CLo think Sal is being too tough. The bullpen finally cracked a bit and the Orioles won the game. Cubs manager David Ross had an expletive-filled tirade crushing umpires. In the final segment of the hour, Jerry clarifies some details on the NBA in-season tournament and Sal still thinks it's a waste of time. There needs to be a real payoff for the winning team. Hour 3: Jerry says last night's win could send the Mets on the kind of run they need and Sal says it again: the Mets are back! Last night gave Sal goosebumps. Sal had given up but he's back in. Last night was the kind of game that rewards you as a fan. Jerry wants Sal to quickly address a few baseball stories. Will the Angels trade Ohtani? Is Elly De La Cruz the most exciting rookie in the last 20 years? Cameraman Pete Stendel was hit by an errant throw last night. The Braves hit a ton of home runs but Sal doesn't think they'll win a World Series. Luis Arraez will finish under .350. Jordan Hicks made one of the worst throws ever to cost the Cardinals a game. CLo returns and the guys talk about their little league bats. Arizona has a very deep center field. Jerry thought “band box” was “ban box”. A look at extreme MLB outfield dimensions. Randy Vazquez pitched very well again but the Yankees lost. Could Matt Harvey make it back to the big leagues as a reliever? Sal took heat yesterday for struggling with Jerry's American history quiz. In the final segment of the hour, Jerry just had a weird bathroom experience. Sal misses reading the paper and might start if he has to start commuting by train.
