It was such a pleasure to spend time with composer and Melbourne Symphony bassist Stephen Newton during my trip to Australia in 2019. Stephen is an outstanding performer, and he has a compelling voice as a composer. A native of Sydney, Stephen joined the Melbourne Symphony in 2006, and he has performed internationally with the MSO and other ensembles. We talk about this recent solo bass suite, developing his voice as a composer, connecting wit the audience, and much more. Enjoy! In October 2018, Sebastiano Dessanay embarked on a humongous adventure: cycling between all 377 towns of his native Sardinia in 377 days. This project, which he called 377, involved him putting his bass ukulele on his back, chronicling his travels via photo, text, and music on his blog. We talk about how he worked up the courage to make this tremendous journey, the logistical planning involved before he went on this trip, high and low points in the journey, what he’s planning to do with all of this detailed material, and much more. Enjoy, and be sure to say hi to this inspiring member of the bass community on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube! Listen to Contrabass Conversations with our free app for iOS, Android, and Kindle! I’ve been following along with Lila Horovitz and her multidimensional career for well over a decade, and it was a real pleasure to finally have her as a guest on the podcast. Lila’s album Preludio del Primer Dia and her video Alone... All one was groundbreaking in highlighting the bass as a solo instrument, and the influence of her Argentinian upbringing is evident throughout her compositions. We talk about her new video series covering techniques used by tango bassists, what it was like playing for Cirque du Soleil’s show Algeria last year, moving to Spain many years ago, musical life in Madrid, and much more. Enjoy, and be sure to follow her on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube! Listen to Contrabass Conversations with our free app for iOS, Android, and Kindle! Kees Boersma has had a remarkable musical career. In addition to serving as Principal Bass of the Sydney Symphony since 1990, Kees teaches at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and is an active clinician and guest artist. I had the opportunity to catch up with Kees in person during my trip to Australia. He was one of the headliners for the Melbourne BassDay, and we met up in a charming Fitzroy coffeeshop to talk through what he played on his recital for this event, his varied career, favorite gig stories, what it’s like behind the scenes at the Sydney Opera House, and much more. After 30 years as Principal Bass of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Steve Reeves decided to retire and move on to other projects. This happened to coincide with my trip to Australia for Rob Nairn’s Melbourne Bass Day, and I had the chance to meet up with Steve over coffee and chat about his career, why he decided to retire, and what he has learned serving as a principal player for three decades. Steve is a great person and a wonderful musician, and we had a lot of fun in this wide-ranging conversation. Enjoy! Listen to Contrabass Conversations with our free app for iOS, Android, and Kindle! Diego Zecharies is one of the most inspiring musicians I know. In addition to serving as principal bass of the Galicia Symphony, director of the Contrabajo de Montevideo festival, and director for the Orquesta Juvenil Sodre, he is in the process of releasing his latest album featuring a new concerto by Simón García, Diego’s arrangement for bass and strings of Le grand Tango by Astor Piazzolla, and 3 Tangos for string orchestra from Andrés Martín. We talk about the inspiration for this new project, the power of taking charge and not waiting for permission, the beauty of bringing new works into the world, and much more. Enjoy, and check out this episode with Diego from 2017 for more about his remarkable background and career. Los Angeles Philharmonic bassist Jory Herman is releasing a new album of pieces that combine narration and bass. This album, which is an outgrowth of his community engagement work, features a mix of pieces geared toward children with other works like Frank Proto’s Mingus - Live in the Underworld and Jon Deak’s BB Wolf. Many of the tracks feature actress and narrator Cloie Wyatt Taylor. Jory was a guest on the podcast back in 2016 when he was still a member of the San Diego Symphony. In this chat, we talked about his solo Bach album and his Life album, work-life balance, and many other topics. In addition to covering the album, I couldn’t resist asking him a few questions about what it was like preparing for and winning an audition for the LA Phil while also holding down a full-time job, being a dad, and working on all of his musical side projects. So many people will resonate with the musical journey that Don Messina has had. He has been a proponent of the music and style of Lennie Tristano ever since meeting him in 1973, and he also spent 14 years studying jazz with tenor saxophonist Fred Amend. In addition to being part of the Kazzrie Jaxen Duo/Trio/Quartet, Don has session and performed with Sal, Mosca, Jimmy Halperin, Larry Bluth, Jon Easton, Peter Prisco, Ted Brown, Rick Moore, Chris Aiello, Will Jhun, Charley Krachy, Skip Scott, Rich Peare, and others. Don has also performed with Phil Woods, Stanley Turrentine, Joris Roelsof, Vassar Clemens, Mike Scap, Josh Breakstone, and the Lew London Trio. Don and I dig into his decisions to play gut strings and without an amp, the unique musical scene surrounding Lennie Tristano, Sal Mosca, and Don’s other major influences, how the jazz scene has evolved over the years, and much more. We also feature a couple of excerpts from Don’s solo album “Dedicated to…” Enjoy! Listen to Contrabass Conversations with our free app for iOS, Android, and Kindle! I’ve known Jeremy Baguyos for over 15 years, and I’ve always found it fascinating how he weaves together the double bass and computer music in his work. After playing bass full-time with the Orquesta Filarmonica de GC (Spain) and Shreveport Symphony, Jeremy moved to Washington, DC to freelance. I met him in the early 2000s while playing in the Des Moines Metro Opera, where he serves as principal bass. After getting a Master’s Degree in Computer Music from Peabody, Jeremy’s career pivoted into academia. He is Professor of Music & Interdisciplinary Informatics at the University of Nebraska Omaha, and I was actually a guest speaker for UNO’s music entrepreneurship program this fall. We talk about his first public music project in Chicago back in 2004, the unexpected twists and turns of his career, what his job at UNO is like, music entrepreneurship, and much more. Enjoy! I’ve been a fan of the music of Dr. Norman Ludwin for years. In fact, his bass ensemble The Love Story led to one of the most entertaining memories of my early years of teaching bass! Norman was in San Francisco doing a talk on orchestration for the American Federation of Musicians Local 6. I had a chance to attend his presentation and also sit down with him the next morning for an in-depth interview on: • his early training and musical background • his time performing in the Florida Symphony and co-principal bass in the Natal Philharmonic in Durban South Africa • getting into the LA studio recording world • making the pivot into the world of composition • building the world’s largest bass catalog with Ludwin Music • writing 11 books on orchestration • his current work as an orchestrator, clinician, and author Lots of funny stories and heartfelt moments in this one—enjoy! Roberto Cassani has had a fascinating path through the music world. Originally from Milan, Italy, Roberto landed a record deal at a young age but walked away from it and moved to Scotland… without speaking any English! Over the years, he has developed a strong following as a folk musician, and he moved from guitar to double bass as his primary instrument about 10 years ago. Since then, he has toured extensively in many different guises, either solo or playing double bass in the world of folk, rockabilly, swing, and more. In 2018, he started working with Danny Thompson, his bass idol, and we became friends, which led to his latest bass and voice monologue project called ROBERTOGRAFIA. We talk about Roberto’s path through the music world, what it was like switching to the bass, how he composes, scheduling creativity, and much more. Enjoy! Nina Harries is a compelling force in the creative arts, exploring new territory with bass and vocals in an exciting manner. She recently launched her debut album in an event along with harpist and vocalist Ellie Ford, and she has several extremely groovy solo pieces like Icarus and The Clown Song up on YouTube. We talk about the experience of feeling like a “duck out of water” her first two years at the Royal College of Music, finding her groove by combining the voice with bass, exploring a variety of bands and creative projects in London, and the circumstances that led her to join the Akram Khan Company two years ago. Dan Robbins was one of the first bassists I met when I moved to the Bay Area, and I’ve loved following along with his career and his imaginative musical stylings for years. We finally got a chance to sit down and do an interview during the 2019 Golden Gate Bass Camp, and we dug into topics like what it was like being invited to do “bass duels” with Christian McBride and his big band, the diverse array of pedals and effects he uses, the pace of life living in the Santa Cruz mountain foothills, and his many and varied projects. Dan is quite active in a wide array of groups. Some of his many projects include: his improvisational trio Source Field the funk band Wasabi teaching at San Jose State University and Santa Clara University Idiot Fish 3 Laurie Antonioli Lost American Jazzbook featuring Tammi Brown Gary Meek Band Enjoy! I was introduced to Robert Landfermann by WDR Big Band bassist and former podcast guest John Goldsby. Robert is a mainstay on the German jazz and new music scene. He’s played for years with the Pablo Held Trio, and does his own albums and projects. He teaches at the University in Essen. We dig into topics like what it’s like performing free jazz, the influence of Paul Motian, Gensler strings and their fascinating properties, the Cologne jazz scene, and much more. Enjoy, and be sure to check out his recent albums Brief and Topaz. Listen to Contrabass Conversations with our free app for iOS, Android, and Kindle!
