A recent paper from Professor William Gardner at Texas Tech University and Professor Kelly Davis McCauley at West Texas A&M University challenges a critique that characterized authentic leadership theory as “wrong” and "perilous." Their analysis demonstrates how misrepresentations of the theory can undermine valuable leadership approaches, while highlighting the empirical support and practical benefits of leaders striving for authenticity in organizational settings.

The jobs report for May was a surprise to the upside, with 272,000 new jobs. Wage growth also came in hotter than expected. Good news, right? But maybe it's not so good for the fight against inflation. It stokes fear among Fed officials that inflation could heat up again if they cut interest rates too soon. With so much weight given to those reports, just how accurate are they?  In this episode, José Torres will explain the jobs report and how the data varies depending on the method used to collect the information. As an economist with decades of high-level experience, he'll share other insights about the economy, inflation, interest rates, mortgage rates, a possible recession, and how all this impacts real estate and the housing market. José Torres is senior economist at Interactive Brokers. Previously he worked as an economist for the US government at the FDIC and the BLS. He also taught economics at the City University of New York and earned a master's degree in financial economics from West Texas A&M University. He's given frequent presentations to public officials and private executives and is often asked for interviews by major media outlets in both English and Spanish. A Christian Critique of Christian Nationalism with David Ritchie

What if we understood nationalism as a religion instead of an ideology? What if nationalism is more spiritual than it is political? Several Christian thinkers have rightly recognized nationalism as a form of idolatry. In this TOT lecture, David A. Ritchie , author of the book Why Do the Nations Rage?, will argue that nationalism is inherently demonic as well. Through an interdisciplinary analysis of scholarship on nationalism and the biblical theology behind Paul's doctrine of “powers,” Ritchie's lecture will uncover how the impulse behind nationalism is as ancient as the tower of Babel and as demonic as the worship of Baal. Moreover, when compared to Christianity, Ritchie will show that nationalism is best understood as a rival religion that bears its own distinctive (and demonically inspired) false gospel, which seeks to both imitate and distort the Christian gospel.David A. Ritchie serves as the Lead Pastor of Redeemer Christian Church and an Instructor of Religion at West Texas A&M University. In his scholarly research, Ritchie interrogated how nationalist movements operate less like a political ideology and more like a spiritually-charged religion. This research culminated in the writing of his book Why Do the Nations Rage? The Demonic Origin of Nationalism, published in 2022 by Wipf & Stock Publishers. This fall he will be presenting a paper at the American Academy of Religion annual meeting entitled “Sketching a Christology of Nationalism: How Nationalism Utilizes Messianic Characterizations to Elicit Spiritual Devotion and Religious Affection.” Ritchie is a highly engaged leader in the West Texas community, serving on the boards of numerous non-profit organizations and ministries, including the Refugee Language Project and the Redeemer Network. David is married to Kate, and together they live in Amarillo, Texas, with their three sons, Solomon, Samuel, and Simon Peter.

Mueller, Assistant Professor of Philosophy at West Texas A&M University. Mueller’s provocative answer to these questions is “Modern Socratic Dialogue,” a pedagogical approach she explores in her recently published article, “Modern Socratic Dialogue and Resilient Democracy: Creating the Clearing for an American Bildung.” In this conversation, Mueller describes the historical roots of MSD and provides a step-by-step explanation of how to implement this method in the classroom, drawing on examples from her own courses. She also unpacks her argument that — because American identity is distinctive — we need a distinctly Americanized version of German Bildung. As the conversation turns to contemporary political questions, Mueller describes how her commitment to consensus-oriented teaching methods has been informed, in part, by her experience growing up in a rural and conservative part of Southern Illinois. She also explains the ways in which similar methods have been used in settings like the Highlander Folk School Workshops, the social-justice leadership school (pictured in the image accompanying this episode) that helped train civil-rights leaders like Rosa Parks and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

In 2019, after a nearly 40-year absence, affiliated minor-league baseball returned to Amarillo with the debut of the Sod Poodles, a Class AA Padres affiliate who won the Texas League title and drew over 400,000 fans in their first season of play. (This despite a team name that infuriated many locals — reportedly it’s obscure pioneer slang for “prairie dogs.”) As Brian M. Ingrassia suggests, however, the Sod Poodles are likely to face some of the same challenges that faced the city’s first affiliated team, the Gold Sox, whose history serves as “a case study illustrating how minor-league ball often only tenuously thrived in a mid-sized city.” An associate professor of history at West Texas A&M University, Ingrassia tells this tale in “The Yellow City’s Tenuous Hold on the Gold Sox: Affiliated Texas League Baseball in Amarillo, 1959–1982,” forthcoming in the Panhandle-Plains Historical Review. He joins Ryan on this episode to discuss the complex interplay between postwar urban development and minor-league baseball, as well as to share stories about the legendary players who have passed through Amarillo on their way to the majors. The interview also touches on the relationship between Ingrassia’s first book, The Rise of Gridiron University: Higher Education’s Uneasy Alliance with Big-Time Football (2012); his more recent research on baseball; and his current scholarly project, a book-length examination of auto racing, urban planning, and the “good roads” movement of the early 1900s.

The collection provides a venue for scholars working in the emerging field of "textual studies," with essays on cultural artifacts ranging from grammar manuals and newspaper articles to (as the editors put it) "items we might consider newcomers or even interlopers in the textual world," including phonographs, "costume books," postcards, publishing catalogs, and virtual databases. In the collection and in the interview, Allen and Reynolds make the case for what a Latin American perspective can bring to this (still Anglo-centric) field; discuss how textual studies can open up new ways of thinking about colonization, modernization, and globalization; and describe the pedagogical possibilities and challenges created by the digitization of archival texts.

I spoke with South African double bassist Zanelle Britz about her launching of the first ever double bass course in South Africa, which will take place December 9-12, 2018 in Cape Town.  Learn more about the event and donate to support it at givengain.com/cc/doublebass.   More about the South African Double Bass Course (from their website): The National Youth Orchestra is hosting our first ever course exclusively for the Double Bass! We are so excited - there are very few opportunities for bassists here and we want this to be the start of a wonderful bass community for South Africa. Wonderful teachers Roxane Steffen (principal bass at the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra), Nick Scales from the School of Music at West Texas A&M University, and Jeff Bradetich and Gudrun Raschen from the University of North Texas College of Music will be on this year's faculty. Every What It Takes course is designed specifically to cater to the needs of the participants. The course covers many aspects of professional musicianship including audition preparation, marketing of yourself as a musician, posture/injury prevention, performing with an orchestra, music history related to your instrument and individual master classes from top professionals. It gives insight into solo, chamber and orchestral playing as well as teaching and other career options. Each course also has an aspect of music education advocacy, and we will make sure to include people new to the bass in our audiences for our concerts, specially children.   Bursaries for the What It Takes: Double Bass Course We have young double bass players from across South Africa that would love to attend - but more than half are not able to do so without financial assistance. With your help we can provide transport, accommodation and catering for their time in Cape Town for the duration of the course 9-12 December 2018. It costs roughly ZAR2000 for transport and ZAR2000 for the course - so each bursary candidate would need USD265 to be able to attend. All of our financial assistance applications are means tested and we make sure they go to the young musicians that really deserve the opportunity.   Listen to Contrabass Conversations with our free app for iOS, Android, and Kindle! Article Written By Caleb Wossen of The Dallas Observer: https://www.dallasobserver.com/arts/a-new-soccer-school-is-redirecting-the-focus-from-winning-to-technique-to-the-dismay-of-some-8951088 "Most training sessions for youth soccer feature a dozen or more players engaged in rigorous group exercises and fitness tests, mirroring the sport’s homonymous counterpart, football. Practice at Footy Factory, based in Addison, TX more closely resembles a martial arts or improv session. Players ranging from kindergartners to high school seniors scrimmage in groups of three or four per session and occasionally one is pulled aside to polish a flaw in technique. During these drills, little to no reference is made to games or competition. This is by design, says founder and CEO Sean Afkhaminia. The goal of Footy Factory is to revolutionize American youth soccer with training that is individualized and focused on developing specific skills by taking the focus and pressure off winning. “We’re trying to develop players, and no else is doing that [in Texas],” Afkhaminia said. “What’s going on in Dallas is that a lot of the big clubs will take parents’ money and put them on a team, they’ll practice twice a week for an hour, and then play a game on the weekend. It’s not enough. There’s no player development going on here.” Footy Factory is trying to work against the prevailing mindset that the purpose of playing team sports is to pad a resume for college. The attitude of Footy Factory's coaches recalls soccer clubs in Europe that incubate students for years without interruption. In conversation, Afkhaminia refers to his philosophy of passion trumping hard work. He insists that no person is born with natural talent, citing Daniel Coyle’s 2009 book The Talent Code. Afkhaminia specifically disagrees with the bias favoring athleticism and winning records over skill, and he wants Footy Factory to help eager, young players who lack the access or funds to continue developing their craft. Players train three times a week, while members of the club’s various teams practice twice a week and play a game on the weekend. As students grow older, the number of games played per week increases, but training is the highest priority. “Right now, individual training is always last,” Afkhaminia said. “It’s something that happens after their team practices and games, but that should be their main work so they can take what they know and apply it outside.” Jude Anuwe, who became a Footy Factory coach in early 2015, majored in biology and physiology at the University of Texas at Dallas. He's helped create a scientific foundation for the company's ethics and regimen. It's all rooted in proprioception or the science of body awareness in space. The plan is to mold players who are able to move more efficiently and better prevent injury. “Nowadays, you see a particular type of soccer player,” Anuwe said. “Guys pirouetting on the spot, overhead kicks — all of these skills are only mastered if you have a strong core, know where your body is in space, and master your balance. Can we move in a functional way?” Afkhaminia founded Footy Factory in late 2014 after graduating with a degree in business from West Texas A&M University. Feeling dissatisfied with the school’s soccer program, Afkhaminia briefly managed a soccer club before assuming coaching duties at Shelton High School, there realizing an idea that would evolve into Footy Factory. Judd Gardner and I have been friends for almost 20 years and I am very excited to have him on the podcast today to talk about the Farm Bill.  You will see quickly that he is extremely well versed in farm policy and the 2014 Farm Bill. Judd grew up on his family ranch in Central New Mexico, attended Clarendon College, obtained his Animal Science degree from Texas Tech University, and his Masters in Agricultural Science at West Texas A&M University. Since graduation, he has been in Washington DC working in agricultural policy.  Currently, he serves as a legislative assistant to Senator Jerry Moran of Kansas. We kick things off with a basic overview of the Farm Bill.  In the 2014 Farm Bill, there are 12 titles including commodity, conservation, research, nutrition, trade, and many others.  It is important to note that the Farm Bill covers far more than the classic commodity programs that most farmers are more familiar with. Judd then offers a great discussion of the major changes to Title I programs in the 2014 Bill.  This includes the shift from the direct payment approach to allowing producers to select between the PLC and ARC programs.  As he explains, PLC is a program based solely on guaranteed reference prices with payments made if a national average price falls below the set reference.  ARC, on the other hand, is a shallow loss revenue program.  It is based on 5 year moving averages of county revenue--essentially county yields times a national price--dip below a certain level, then farmers receive a payment.  Additionally, he mentions the removal of cotton from being a Title I covered commodity, a change that has had major impacts on producers here in Texas. Currently, Judd reports that Congress is essentially in a listening phase, gathering information about what is working and what is not working with the 2014 Farm Bill.  Soon, they will move into the writing phase where they begin actually drafting the language of the next Farm Bill. Judd offers several predictions for the next Farm Bill.  He does not foresee a wholesale modification like we saw in the 2014 Farm Bill, but instead feels like we will see tweaks made to the existing design.  He expects farmers to still have a choice between programs similar to ARC and PLC and he says he believes that cotton will be written back into Title I in some way. We wrapped things up by asking Judd for a law he would like to see changed.  He says he wishes we would change the way Congressional District lines are drawn.  Specifically, he says we should get away from gerrymandering to guarantee results for one party or the other. While admitting that the best Mexican food is found in Las Cruces, New Mexico, Judd decided to go with his favorite restaurant in Washington, DC, Ted's Bulletin. A graduate of West Texas A&M University, Andy Dietz majored in mass communications and earned a double minor in music and English. He and his twin brother traveled the world using their tenor voices, toured with the USO, and recorded four albums as part of gospel quartet The Royalheirs, and three albums as the Dietz Brothers. Andy has pastored several churches and followed his heart for missions to over forty countries with a focus on China. He and his wife, Becky, live in Groom, Texas. They have four married children, and eleven amazing grandchildren. Andy is the author of "Kidnapped In Budapest," and contributor to the devotional book "The Chosen Path." Andy has a new book that should be released this summer, "TRUTH, the Pathway to Life! ...Finding Your Purpose" and a new devotional contribution that will also release in the summer. What you'll hear in this episode: How Andy's ministry began with singing with his brother in church, and then opened up to larger audiences Andy's path went from Music Evangelism to Student Ministry to Missions, and now to Senior Pastor. Andy points to John 14:6 as his life verse: “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” How  John 14:6 corresponds to Andy's new book about . . . Truth! We, as Christians, often fall into the trap of believing Satan's lies about ourselves instead of trusting in God's truth! One of Andy's favorite quotes is from Dr. Roy Fish: “Not everyone who begins to sink, sinks, but everyone who sinks begins to sink.” As Peter, when we keep our eyes on Jesus, and HIS TRUTH, we won't sink! Andy describes what it means to “put your ‘YES' on the altar” in response to God's call. How God uses the things we are passionate about to steer and stretch us “out of our box” Andy describes the challenge and the failure he felt as a new parent; he overcame this by focusing on “rites of passage,” teaching his children things they need to know. The natural process in raising children is to raise them to pull away and be adults, but some parents today never help their children learn to be adults. Andy encourages mission trips as an effective way for kids to learn responsibility. For Andy, the combination of working with young people and doing missions work was what turned the light bulb on for him in defining God's purpose for him. Andy describes an amazing part of his missions work, taking young people to work at an orphanage in Mexico. Let's Get Real! Round Questions: What is your biggest strength? “Mercy—it's the spiritual gift that motivates me.” What is your biggest weakness? “Wanting someone else to reach out and help someone instead of realizing that I need to do it.” What is the biggest thing God is stirring up in your life? “For the organized church to wake up and find their purpose!” Kung Fu Round Questions: What does sharing the gospel look like for you, outside of church? “It's a daily awareness, looking for God's divine appointments with people with whom to share the gospel.” What is a daily habit that you can share with us? “Taking time daily to hear God.” What is a book that has impacted you recently? How to Worship a King, by Zach Neese What is a resource that you can recommend to our listeners? “I like www.joelrosenberg.com because he has such awareness of what's going on in the world, especially regarding Israel.” What advice would you give to the “younger” you? “I would want to go back to age 13, and have somebody like me to tell the younger me to find my purpose.” What parting advice do you have for our listeners? “Find your passion; develop that passion to find you place in the kingdom of God.” You can read the full show notes and access all the links and resources at www.areyoureal.org.

Today’s episode features double bassist David Murray. David is on faculty at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana, and has been on the board of the International Society of Bassists for past two decades. The former winner of the ISB solo competition, David is known around the world as a soloist and clinician. He is also a member of the Bad Boyz of Bass, a quartet rounded out by Volkan Orhon, Anthony Stoops (a former Contrabass Conversations guest), and Paul Sharpe. We actually featured the Bad Boyz on episode 71 of the podcast back in 2008, which is well worth a listen if you haven’t checked it out before! We talk about David’s experiences having Gary Karr as his first bass teacher, where the “Karr sound” came from, focusing on bow technique, the spirit of Koussevitzky, his long relationship with the International Society of Bassists as a former competition winner and longtime board member, traveling with a bass, and several other topics. We also feature the title track from David’s solo album Vocalise, and we conclude the episode with a recording of David playing the first movement of the Franck Sonata from his Sonatas by Franck and Shostakovich album. Both the Vocalise album and the Sonatas album are available through the ISB Web Store. I’d also encourage you to check out David’s performance of the B.B. Wolf by Jon Deak. It’s a great piece and David knocks it out of the park! About David: David Murray has an international reputation as a solo bassist and teacher. He is currently Professor of Bass at Butler University in Indianapolis and Principal Bassist ofthe Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra. He also plays as Principal Bassist with Sinfonia da Camera in Urbana, Illinois, and at the Bear Valley Music Festival in northern California. Before coming to Indianapolis, David was Instructor of Bass at West Texas A&M University and principal with the Amarillo Symphony. He has been a member of the Dallas Chamber Orchestra and also toured twice with the Irish Chamber Orchestra. David’s first private teacher was bass virtuoso Gary Karr, with whom he studied in high-school and at the Hartt Music School, University of Hartford, in Connecticut. Summers were spent at Tanglewood and the Aspen Music Festival, where he worked with Stuart Sankey. At Aspen, he won the 1981concerto competition. In Los Angeles in 1988 he won the International Society of Bassists (ISB) Solo Competition, the first prize being a solo debut at Carnegie Hall. David has made solo appearances, both in recital and with orchestra, and given clinics and masterclasses throughout the United States, his native Canada, and in South Korea, Brazil, Israel, Scotland, France, Spain, Portugal,Denmark, Germany, and Holland. He has performed at several summer chamber music festivals including Scotia Festival, Killington, and Cape May. In June, 2001,David hosted the ISB convention at Butler University for 800 bassists from 27countries and is currently a Past-President of the ISB. He has been published in the ISB journal, Double Bassist magazine, the Suzuki Association of America journal, and American String Teachers journal. He has recorded three solo CD’s(most recently in 2012), a duo CD with bassist Diana Gannett, is a founding member of the bass quartet Bad Boys of Bass with whom he released a CD in 2006,and he released a DVD of theater music in the spring of 2003. “…to hear David Murray play it, the string bass is a vastly and unjustly neglected instrument. Murray…became a prime spokesman for the instrument.” Denver Post “…Murray is a top-notch player.” IndianapolisStar

Introduction: In this podcast we take a look at some of our recent blog content.Gordon: Mike, you recently published a blog titled Web 2.0: RSS Explained. You did not actually describe RSS but referenced some online content that is just excellent. Can you fill us in?Here's a link to a great video created by CommonCraft - a consulting company focused on helping companies and organizations integrate online communities into their businesses. All organizations would be wise to adopt CommonCraft's core belief:    "that, in the future, organizations will rely on their community of customers to remain competitive".Amazon, YouTube and digg are great examples of businesses that not only value their community of users, but have built a business model around that community. In just under four minutes, the video provides a simple, easy to understand explanation of RSS - a technology that I and many other have become dependent on to get our news and information. The video also uses a a really clever presentation method - yet another alternative to the overused powerpoint slideshow.Mike: Gordon, you wrote an interesting blog on Proximity Marketing and the use of Bluetooth devices. Can you fill us in?Gordon: Most of us have a pretty good idea of what Bluetooth is but before I talk about proximity marketing maybe you could give us a quick primer on Bluetooth. Wikipedia defines it as follows:"Bluetooth is an industrial specification for wireless personal area networks (PANs). Bluetooth provides a way to connect and exchange information between devices such as mobile phones, laptops, PCs, printers, digital cameras, and video game consoles over a secure, globally unlicensed short-range radio frequency. The Bluetooth specifications are developed and licensed by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group"."Bluetooth is a radio standard and communications protocol primarily designed for low power consumption, with a short range (power-class-dependent: 1 meter, 10 meters, 100 meters) based on low-cost transceiver microchips in each device"."Bluetooth lets these devices communicate with each other when they are in range. The devices use a radio communications system, so they do not have to be in line of sight of each other, and can even be in other rooms, as long as the received transmission is powerful enough".Simply put - short range, two-way and, up to this point for most of us in the United States, personal device to personal device communications. Many of us have Bluetooth capable cell phones and are using wireless earpieces for talking while driving or with our hands full. Most laptop PC's come with Bluetooth now and allow wireless attachment and sync with cell phones and other devices.Mike: Gordon, how is this technology being used in Proximity Marketing? In other parts of the world it's been a little different. Companies like BlooZone, are using Bluetooth applications to provide "location aware services" such as proximity marketing. BlueBlitz is another good example of one company that is developing some interesting Bluetooth applications. Here's a piece from their website:"With MagicBeamer you can transfer any information or advertisment to a mobile phone or PDA. It's even possible to sell products or create prize games! And all that 24/7, all year long and through walls and shopping windows"."The transfer of the data is done with Bluetooth(TM) technology. Your advantage: no transfer fees of any kind! It doesn't matter, whether you reach 100 or 100.000 customers. No matter what information you offer for download, the transmission is always free".So what you may say - no big deal - it's like sending a text message. Well sort of - some of the content may be that simple however, the key word for the retailer is free! Think in terms of a retailer in a mall and let's say this retailer has purchased one of these Magic Beamers and placed an ad on it. Everyone that comes within range with Bluetooth enabled on their phone, PDA, laptop, etc and with the device in "discoverable" mode will get a message asking if they want to receive an ad from the retailer. Everyone! The retailer does not need to know email addresses or phone numbers - the customer just has to be in range with Bluetooth in discoverable mode. And..... it does not cost a penny in transfer/data fees.Mike: Gordon, you recently blogged about something called Road Apples. Can you tell us a little bit about that?I had an interesting experience while traveling a couple of weeks ago. I was in DC for the day and walking through Regan National Airport to catch my flight back home. I have a tendency to look down at the ground when I'm walking - as a result I find a lot of stuff (sometimes even money!) Well, I found what looked like a brand new 1G USB thumb drive. I scooped it up, went to my gate and, not really thinking twice, turned on my notebook and popped the thumb drive in my machine. I caught myself and said wait a minute, pulled it out and ended up tossing it into a trashcan. On the flight back I got thinking about how careless I had been. I realized I could have picked up a Road Apple and am a little upset I tossed it because it would have been interesting to take a closer look. Here's how Wikipedia defines Road Apples:"A road apple is a real-world variation of a Trojan Horse that uses physical media and relies on the curiosity of the victim. The attacker leaves a malware infected floppy disc, CD ROM or USB key in a location sure to be found (bathroom, elevator, sidewalk), gives it a legitimate looking and curiosity piquing label - and simply waits.Example: Get corporate logo off target's web site, make a disk label using logo and write "Executive Salary Summary Q1 2007" on the front."Let's think about this a minute. Was it a plant? It could have been. Here's my logic - I'm in Regan National Airport in DC - this is the quickest airport to get in and out of and is frequented by Congressmen, Senators, staffers, etc. I've run into my Congressman Richie Neal on a few occasions at National - they all use this airport.A quick search on Amazon indicates I can buy 1G thumb drives for under $10 each and you can get through airport security with thumb drives without a problem - I think I've got 5 or 6 in my bag almost all of the time. Let's say a "social engineer" wants to do a little social engineering and decides to setup a bunch of drives with some malware that does something malicious. This person walks around and drops a drive on the floor every once in a while. For airport access these people would not even have to get through security which requires a ticket purchase - they could just scatter them around the baggage area. Now let's say a staffer picks one of these drives up or a contractor, etc - someone with access to secure government networks. They pick the thumb drive up, bring it to work and plug it into their work computer. Or maybe they plug the thing into their laptop with classified information on it when they get home. Doing so they may have bypassed millions of dollars of perimeter security, firewalls, etc and provided malicious people with content, access, control, etc, etc. We've all heard the stories about laptops being stolen with identification databases on them. Using a method like this computers don't have to be stolen any more. Transfer this same scenario to downtown Manhattan on a beautiful spring day like today or London or Tokyo.....I low-level formatted the drive and then wrote back a bit image I had as backup. I wish I had saved that thumb drive....Gordon: Mike you have some quick updates you wanted to share with us:Apple NewsMay 18th: FCC approves iphone - asked to hold pics and manual fro 45 daysMay 16th: Tech blog Engadget posted a rumor on iphone Mac os x - apple stock price drops, many sell short, 4 bill market value dropiphone release delayed from June until October and leopard OS from October until next yeariPhone and Apple's Leopard OS is on schedule for a June and October release respectivelyMay 13th - AT&T Wireless CEO Stan Sigman gives iphone to president of West Texas A&M University at commencement - Sigman is a 1970 WTAMU graduateMarch at CTIA - AT&T Chief Operations Officer Randall Stephenson showed off an iphone during his keynote speechJoost friends and family - lots of invites!Google universal search - includes YouTube results - puts yahoo and Microsoft further behindGmail - PowerPoint integration begins to roll out
