Welcome to Episode 43: In this episode of the Honesty Pill Podcast, I sit down with career coach and author Angela Beeching. Angela, the author of Beyond Talent, has helped countless musicians break through the overwhelm and frustration of building a sustainable career in the music industry. We dive into goal setting, time management, and even overcoming fear and self-doubt to create a career that you not only enjoy but one that pays the bills—crazy, right? In this Episode: How to develop a "portfolio career" and balance multiple roles without burning out. Practical tools for managing fear and impostor syndrome. Strategies for moving beyond overwhelm to set goals that actually move your career forward. Mindset shifts that can help musicians tap into their full potential. Highlights: (00:33) Angela talks about how musicians can find jobs they're great at, that people need, and that they might actually love. (03:33) "What does it take for people to be happy?" Angela explores the balance between success and enjoying the journey. (07:01) The "Magic Index Card" exercise—how simple actions today can move you toward your career goals. (16:53) Angela guides me through her “Cosmic Rage” tool to quiet fear and resistance. (26:49) We discuss the importance of mindset and how to shift from a victim mentality to one of empowerment. Memorable Quotes: "What we think of as success in terms of our career is just one component, and not being so obsessed with the outcome that you can't enjoy the journey is key." "We are all capable of so much more than we realize, and we don't know how much we are standing in our own way." "Successful musicians engage in specific patterns of thinking and behavior. It's these habits, beyond talent, that help them move ahead despite the inevitable challenges." Richard talks about his visit to Wales & Borders with Nick Millington MBE, Route Director at Network Rail and finds out about lagoons, climate models and vegetation control. In particular Richard is amazed at the complex multi-agency approach to securing ecology licences and concludes, perhaps controversially, that it's time to let Network Rail self certify. After all, they can do it with safety critical matters so why not when it comes to clearing dying or dead Ash trees? Nigel and Richard then discuss Richard Beeching's famous report of the 1960s and in particular, the Government's proposals, announced four years ago, to reopen lines and stations closed by Beeching through the Restoring Your Railway fund. We ask whether it has achieved anything (and the conclusion is very little) but then Nigel really sets Richard's "Victor Meldrew" going by talking about the Borders Railway to Carlisle and the possible reopening of the Peak District line through Bakewell and Monsal Dale. Along the way Nigel & Richard discuss how to decide whether something is strategic (they have a different view), what Confirmation Bias means (and why it's an issue) and how on earth anything is going to happen when the cost for a new station at Devizes alone was looking like it could hit £65m!

In the company of Peter Rooke, curator of the West Cumberland Railway Museum, we embark on our journey in the pioneering age of steam, when Carlisle offered a west coast port for the metalworks of Newcastle. As lines spread – around the west coast and reluctantly over Shap – we learn about the Lowther decree that split Whitehaven in two and the overseas fate of Europe's then-longest viaduct across the Solway. Entering the tourist age, we consider why golf-loving Scots were the making of Silloth and why La'al Ratty once had ambitions on Ambleside, before arriving in rail's sunset years, when consolidations and Beeching laid waste to many still-lamented rural lines.   You can find out more about Peter's museum – and arrange a visit - at https://www.facebook.com/West-Cumberland-Railway-Museum-1082018475225883/

I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, Chris Bedford—also known as Dumpman. I first discovered Chris and his work when I walked the Downs Link back in 2016. Chris is the owner of Dumpman Films, and he makes documentaries about disused railways in southern England. Back when I was researching my book on the Wey-South Path, I bought one of his films on the Hardham canal tunnel, and I found it really fascinating. You may know that two of my favorite trails are the Wey-South Path (which goes along a mostly disused canal) and the Downs Link (which follows a disused railway). I love exploring these bits of history, and I find abandoned transportation routes especially interesting. Outdoor adventures don't have to be about physical fitness and endurance. They can also be about exploration and reconnecting with history. I hope you're inspired to explore your area's history after listening to this episode!   About Chris Bedford Chris Bedford is an explorer and documentary filmmaker. His business, Dumpman Films, is based in Sussex and specializes in hunting out hard-to-find scenes, views, and journeys and making them available. If it's interesting and awkward, he's in there. Although based in Sussex, the material is by no means limited to Sussex. Chris makes homemade films about odd places. Abandoned railways/disused railways feature heavily; what magic there is in seeing an abandoned railway station or tunnel or other such relic left behind as a result of Dr Beeching's axe. However, wartime bunkers, sewers, canal tunnels, collapsing piers, disused industrial sites, old roads and ruined Victorian asylums crop up too. Jeffrey Holland is Sitcom Royalty, You could say Hi De Hi and it wouldn't be the first time he'd heard that in the street and if you think it started airing on TV 41 years ago, Jeffrey's face hasn't really changed in that time. I guess when we see people pop on and off our TV screens they become part of our family, they're in our homes with us during a cuppa tea or a roast dinner, your sat with your favourite people or family and popular sitcoms such as Hi de hi, only fools and horses, one foot in the grave, they're there to make the whole family laugh together, that is the family's first Comedy Club together and the first theatre for the family is pantomime. So we have a lot to thank Mr Holland for, he has appeared in so many of our favourites including Hi de hi as Spike Dixon, You rang m'lord as James Twelve trees, Cecil parkin in oh Doctor Beeching and he has been in Are you being served, It aint arf hot mum and dads army. His face would be so recognisable throughout the 80's and 90's due to his part in the Russ Abbot TV Shows, Les Dennis and Kenny Everett TV Shows and if you have seen pantomime in the past 50 years you would probably have seen Jeffrey on the bill. I saw him with Keith Harris, Nigel Havers, Julian Clary and Joan Collins at the Birmingham Hippodrome, I mean what a show that was. I'll let Jeffrey tell you the rest, Welcome to E&T VOV Jeffrey Holland

A conversation with Angela Myles Beeching - a career specialist and an author of Beyond Talent: Creating a Successful Career in Music.  In this conversation I was curious to reveal how people whose work is to motivate others, found motivation  in 2020 themselves. Angela is a world's top leading career coach and mentor for musicians. Her work is based on helping musicians to find meaning and their own paths and voices. In this conversation we talked about jealousy, commitment, dedication to the practice and our favorite author Seth Godin.  My favorite line of this talk was "You can produce the work, but it is not up to you how it is received". Érdekes párhuzamokat látunk a hazai eseményekkel is, még ha a gondok forrása közel sem azonos. Közlekedéstörténeti kitekintő a Közvetlen Kocsiban. The first trains ran on the officially named Cheddar Valley Line after opening in 1869. A branch line providing a vital local link for farmers and growers along the Mendip Hills and on through the moors of the North Somerset Levels. Their trade was destined for the mainline and then on to Bristol, Exeter, London and beyond. While the railway line was a vital economic link for passengers, its function developed for the the transportation of products particularly from local quarrying and agriculture, including a hectic month in high summer when strawberries rushed from the Mendip farms along the line, destined for the rest of the UK. Then in 1963 what is now known as the Strawberry Line story could have ended. Along with many branch lines it was closed under the axe of the Beeching cuts. Over the years, the landscape consumed the track and it all but disappeared from the landscape it once dominated. Then, a few decades ago, local people got together and took it upon themselves to resurrect the line for the benefit of wildlife, for the benefit of local communities and as a green transport route. The Strawberry Line was reborn. Local wildlife expert Chris Sperring MBE walks along the line to offer a glimpse into the function of the Strawberry Line today. It would be easy to go back in time and reflect on the past but this is a story about the future. From slow beginnings slowly the line brought the community along it together with a common purpose that of being part of this linear feature in the landscape. From a national cider producer who has created a permissive path through its orchards, to a cafe managed and run by people with learning disabilities. A local wildlife group manages the track for the benefit of everyone who uses it, as well as for the nature which now finds its home there. And a local heritage centre, run and managed by community volunteers, provides the history of this local line with a national reach. But, as they say, nothing is new and the Strawberry Line is now poised to play another role in a much more ambitious project to connect this least known area of Somerset to a regional, and national, network once again. Producer Andrew Dawes Presenter Chris Sperring MBE

Their gospel is one of slavery to ones sel-made identity (read idol), where yours is one of freedom in Christ. I originally wanted for the affirmation arguments to be true, but now I consider them utterly appalling. They effectively deny Christ's power to save us, and create a clean heart in us. A "clean heart" needing to be created after all requires the current heart to be filthy.   And no; I'm not some individual that has been brainwashed by "gay-cure" therapy, which is just the other side of the coin of the heresy that dominates LGBT identitarianism (Pelagianism). I also don't think my experience is universal, the struggle is life-long for most, nor do I think I'm somehow a special Christian, merely one who has been changed by the awesome power and love of God. The call from Christ is a love that preaches self-denial (Mark, Luke and Matthew all have Jesus telling people to "deny" themselves in order to "follow" Him Matthew 16:24, Luke 9:23, Mark 8:34) not of self acceptance as Beeching espouses. Jesus destroyed the false God in my heart and changed my nature. I'm not perfect by any means (there is still sin in my heart in thought, word and deed that pops up), but I know God can change anyone, for He did change and is changing me.'

It's unlikely to be the last time, I'm afraid: some stuff happening in the non-work bit of my life has disrupted my schedule somewhat, but I still hope to get the next episode out by the end of next week.Anyway, enough about that: this week my guest is journalist and author Matthew Engel. In 2009, he published Eleven Minutes Late: A Train Journey to the Soul of Britain – his history of the British railway system which, running pretty late myself, I didn't read until last year.Matthew gives me a quick tour of railway history, from the Victorians to Dr Beeching. We are proud to bring you the first episode of "Among The People", with an impactful interview with Maryknoll Brother, John Beeching. In this Episode, Brother John shares: • His time with Mother Teresa, a story we're sure you've never heard. • His war experiences in Beirut and Yemen. • Managing the trauma of war. • His selfless work with the Mon refugees of Myanmar and Thailand. • Christian love and Buddhist compassion. About Brother John: Much of Brother Beeching's work in Thailand has involved accompanying Mon refugees and monks, who have taken shelter at Wat Prok, a Buddhist temple in Bangkok. The Mon are indigenous Burmese people, who have been brutalized by the ruling military regime of Burma (Myanmar, as the military government now refers to the country). Brother Beeching joins the Mon and other Burmese ethnic groups in demonstrating in front of the Myanmar embassy in Bangkok, helps them secure visas and passports, and assists them in getting supplies to some of the refugee camps along the Burmese/Thai border. He writes: "Despite differences in belief, these fellow refugees and I have grown through the experience of service as a shared sense of community. Together we break the bread of compassion. Together we sit in silence trying to be present to the gift of the moment, and are drawn ever deeper into the ineffable mystery of God." Prior to Bangkok, Brother John served first in Chile and then in the Middle East, working in Egypt, Yemen and Lebanon. In war-ravaged Beirut he experienced numerous narrow escapes with mortar attacks and terrorist bombings. It was also a time when he became involved in interfaith dialogue, an interest that has grown within the old walls of Wat Prok, Thailand. For him, Christian love and Buddhist compassion comprise the same call to action. "Buddhists say you are a brother to the mosquito you slapped on your wrist. The tree, the water-it's all part of what is happening in you. It's a brotherhood that embraces all life."
