After being a high-level taekwondo competitor and making door-to-door sales calls, Alexine Mudawar knows about taking her lumps. The strategic account executive at Alyce and co-founder of the Women in Sales Club says her long-ago cold calls taught her how “to build rapport very quickly” when meeting someone new. To those who want to follow her career path from front-line AE to heading enterprise sales teams, Alexine urges perspective and patience. She says it's important to keep team members apprised of a deal's status, not just when it closes, and that sales take longer when dealing with larger, more-bureaucratic clients. Hear Alexine and Morgan discuss the importance of having multiple contacts on the prospect side, something he calls “deal insurance.” Interested in connecting with Alexine? https://www.linkedin.com/in/alexine-mudawar/ (https://www.linkedin.com/in/alexine-mudawar/)
Knowing the tools (and listening to the boss) helped Jed Mahrle go from a front-line rep to a global sales development executive. He cold-called when he started because that's what his boss wanted, but also developed more sophisticated approaches to generating sales, including deeper looks into data. Today as head of outbound sales for sales engagement software company Mailshake, he encourages account executives to engage end-users on LinkedIn, find out their needs, and consider how they can be addressed. “If you're genuine, it's free information you can take to the decision makers,” Jed says. Hear Jed and Morgan discuss how they wring the most value out of the information that's available through the Salesforce platform. Sales development guru Gabrielle Blackwell says authenticity — “when your words and actions align” — can be a powerful tool in the workplace. “Things happen” to everyone, says the business development manager for productivity platform Airtable, but accepting the past and committing to “show up and own my narrative” can energize career advancement. Job search candidates stand out when they “demonstrate mastery by being able to articulate what it is that makes (them) successful,” she says. “If you can't figure out what makes you successful, how are you going to be able to help others figure out what makes them successful?” Hear Morgan and Gabrielle discuss a frequently overlooked link in the sales chain: the relationship between the sales representative and their manager. Devin Reed thought twice before leaving a successful sales career to become a marketing executive for Gong, the AI-fueled sales intelligence company known for its must-read blog. “It took me a long time to get good” at selling, he says, but a commitment to serving others learned from the Bible led him to assisting his co-workers in making their sales. Today as Gong's head of content strategy he says successful marketers need to recognize their company's top annual goal and “attach everything that you do to support it in some way.” Hear Morgan and Devin share how Kobe Bryant inspired them as much with his grit and hustle as with his basketball talent. In this solo episode, Morgan clues us in on how to recognize your weaknesses and what to do about them: figure out what they are and why they are a “weakness”, ask others what they can see, and write them out in order to take action. Firstly, Morgan wants to change the narrative of calling a weakness exactly that, but rather switching up the language to saying “these are the things I can improve upon”. This is a personal episode where Morgan hopes that by sharing his anecdotes, you too can also start on that path of complete self-awareness. Morgan asks how Claude does this in a pandemic. Claude suggests having cocktails on-screen, even when you're all in different time zones. Calls and FaceTime can be much more impactful than a text. How does Claude reset? Especially with so many conversations on a daily basis. Being with her head, being outside, cooking, listening to music fill her up3 things about being a parent that she wishes she would have known: How different your sleep would be, watching a small human grow & develop every single day is incredible, making sure you check yourself as a parent.Even as an empathetic person, Claude thought she could be like this in parenthood, but nothing teaches you anything as well as parenthood. Parenthood has humbled Claude, helped her to be much kinder, more understanding, more empathetic, so her message to all parents is “We're in this together.”Morgan asks Claude what she brings from parenthood into the workplace. She mentions the collaboration and the sharing of resiliency where she sees parallels between parenting and the workplace.Claude is writing a book about being the first Chief Heart Officer - writing about emotional optimism and leading with heart & leading with love. Claude worked with a book coach who really got on her case about doing her best work. She wants to bring about a revolution in the workplace and revolution in tenderness. Claude believes there are consequences to their choices. She does believe societal issues happen for a reason, and they were set in motion centuries ago. She believes Black Lives Matter is happening right now for a reason, in order to shine light on issues that need to be reformed. The best piece of advice Claude has received recently: Play to your strengths, and if there is something you cannot do 100%, it's OK to do 80% as long as you bring someone else in to do the other 20%. This is great because this means not everything is on my shoulders, and I can lean on someone else for their strengths. What's it like working with Gary Vee? Claude says he's chill, insightful, puts people first and has a lot of integrity. Shoutouts: To the people today who are shouting out to other people! Keep spreading that kindness. What are some ways you enjoy time outdoors? This week, Morgan shares about getting out in nature and being purposeful with your time outside. He gives actionable ways of changing it up when enjoying nature: short bursts, what type of music to play, what to do before and after. Tune in and 1UP!Key takeaways: Morgan reiterates the 3 things he talks about with Nicolette in episode 15: finding a mentor, therapy as coaching, and being active in nature. This episode (16) is about getting out in nature. Like many others during the pandemic, Morgan was feeling stuck inside his apartment on calls working all day during quarantine. Even just getting outside for a nature walk, Morgan likes to disconnect from work but reconnect with everyone else in his life via voice notes, texts and FaceTime. His concentration has improved after each time he spends time in nature. He listens to “lo-fi” music and not high frequency, or he listens to a podcast. Listening to these types of sounds helps him stays calm on walks and that energy translates when going back inside to work.Walks double as exercise! We spend so much of our life working & not taking care of our health. Being physically active keeps the mind fresh as well. 30-45 minute walks are what Morgan recommends. Three things Morgan learned from purposely being out in nature: he feels much happier, his concentration has improved, walking doubles as exercise.
