This week, we are thrilled to welcome Coss Marte to the show! Coss Marte is an entrepreneur from the Lower East Side of Manhattan. By the age of 19, he was running a multi-million dollar drug dealing operation, which eventually led to his incarceration. While in prison, he experienced a pivotal moment when doctors warned him about his poor health. Determined to change his life, he developed a fitness routine using only his body weight and the confines of his cell. He lost 70 pounds in six months and helped 20 other inmates improve their fitness.Upon his release, Coss founded Conbody, a prison-style boot camp fitness program that employs more than 50 formerly incarcerated individuals. He is now running Conbud, a cannabis dispensary that provides opportunities for formerly incarcerated individuals and creates an educational space highlighting the impact of the war on drugs on communities of color.Follow Coss and his ventures:@cossmarte@conbody@conbud

Coss Marte started selling drugs at a young age and quickly became a millionaire. Years later, he was sent to prison and in prison he created a workout regiment that helped him lose weight. After leaving prison he was unable to find an employer that would hire him and so he started a workout company called ConBody. His Website: https://conbody.com/
Coss Marte created a prison-based workout program in solitary confinement, then turned it into a thriving business called Conbody that employs ex-inmates. Their recidivism rate is zero.Debra Granik, the brilliant Oscar-nominated director of films including Winter's Bone and Leave No Trace, tells the story in Conbody vs Everybody, premiering today at Sundance. Coss Marte, a native of New York City, went from being a kingpin in criminal activities to serving multiple years in state prison, where he underwent a transformative experience. During his time in prison, he had a profound realization and decided to change his life. Using his prison experience as inspiration, he created the ConBody fitness program, a unique initiative that provides effective workouts and fitness training while offering second chances to formerly incarcerated individuals, helping them reintegrate into society. Additionally, Marte established the ConBud dispensary, likely focusing on legal cannabis products, showcasing his commitment to creating opportunities for those who have faced obstacles in their past. His journey from a life of crime to becoming a fitness innovator and community leader is a powerful testament to redemption and positive transformation. When New York legalized recreational cannabis for adults, it didn't just want to fling the gates wide open for anyone to take part. Instead it specifically aimed to help out and give priority to individuals who were previously harmed by the war on drugs. However, more than two years after the law was signed, there are just a handful of legal, licensed shops. Meanwhile, there are thousands of un-licensed shops that proliferate across New York City. At the same time, red tape and legal challenges have hampered the efforts of those going down the legal, regulated path. On this episode, we speak with two entrepreneurs who are trying to go down the regulated path: Coss Marte and Alfredo Angueira of Conbud. They've spent over a million dollars getting ready to launch their dispensary in Manhattan's Lower East Side, but have been unable to actually open it on schedule due to various last minute glitches and legal challenges. We discuss what they've encountered in their efforts, and what it's been costing them to go down the legal path. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Before states started legalizing weed shops, most of the legacy growers, transporters, and dealers who got arrested for running the underground cannabis economy were Black and brown entrepreneurial-minded men trying to make a better life for themselves. In states that have adopted cannabis social equity laws, people formerly incarcerated for selling weed before it was cool are now able to get assistance to enter the legal market first. So what's life like now for legacy dealers who can bring legal cannabis shops to their neighborhoods? And what did they have to build and go through to get us cannabis before there was a legal market? In this episode, host Brit Smith talks to Coss Marte, a formerly incarcerated New York City drug kingpin who is now the CEO of CONBUD; NYC's first cannabis dispensaries that will soon be staffed entirely by formerly incarcerated individuals.Coss discusses his upbringing in NYC's lower east side, and how he ran a multi-million dollar drug delivery network that led to his 7-year-stint in New York's notorious Rikers Island Prison where he continued dealing and endured solitary confinement.Coss talks about why he set up CONBODY; a fitness regime that got New Yorkers into shape like they do in prison, what he's done to get back into the cannabis industry now it's legal in his city, and which legacy strains he's bringing back to his neighborhood with his two CONBUD cannabis stores, which are set to open at the end of the summer in the Bronx and the Lower East Side.Get your issue of Different Leaf magazine at DifferentLeaf.com or find your local in-person retailer at DifferentLeaf.com/on-the-newsstandFollow us on social media @DifferentLeaf and find host Brit Smith @BritTheBritishCheck out our new merch line at xDifferentLeaf.com

Today we will look back to our interview with Coss Marte, an ex-inmate who is now a successful entrepreneur and founder of ConBody.Speaking to Coss has been so incredible. His raw honesty, incredible journey, and desire to make something good out of something so bad has been very moving. During our interview, we touched upon a wide variety of issues, but the one story that stayed with me was our discussion about redemption. Coss shared with us how hard was to start from scratch when he was out of prison.“Giving people a second chance that was one thing that I was struggling with when I came home.” “Three felonies on my record … It was like a stamp for life. So ConBody was basically born out of desperation,” he said. In this short excerpt from the interview you will hear his thoughts on inmate redemption and what could society and large corporations do to help bring them back to positive ways once they are out.
Here's one of my favorite recordings from our archives: Today we're talking to Coss Marte, the founder and CEO of CONBODY, a prison fitness-style boot camp offering in-person and virtual classes based out of NYC. Coss developed the idea of CONBODY based on his own experiences in prison, where he turned to fitness after becoming overweight and at a high risk for cardiac problems. Since founding CONBODY, Coss has hired over 40 formerly incarcerated individuals as trainers, and he's also become an advocate for prison reform and former inmates looking to build new lives. We talk about Coss' inspiration for CONBODY while in solitary confinement, what to expect from their high-intensity workouts, and much, much more.

In this interview we speak with Coss Marte, who was once leading one of the largest illegal drug delivery rings in New York City. Today he runs a fitness business that employs over 60 formerly incarcerated individuals and has helped over 70,000 people improve their health. This was not a fast journey and one that included childhood adversity, arrest, prison time, remorse, redemption, and self-realization. I was moved by Coss's heart and motivation to that allowed him to navigate a system and society riddled with bias and inequity, ultimately giving him the leverage to begin reshaping the system itself.
Coss Marte is a former multi millionaire drug kingpin turned legitimate millionaire businessman. In 2009 he was sent to prison where he served 4 years and came out with a brilliant business called Conbody. It's a “prison style” bootcamp that hires formerly incarcerated individuals to teach fitness classes. You might have seen him on countless media outlets from Ellen to multiple Ted Talks to Vice documentaries and so on… https://conbody.com/ https://www.instagram.com/conbody/
Brian Thompson chats with Coss Marte, a former inmate turned business magnate. Coss is the founder of CONBODY, the first fitness method developed in prison. Through CONBODY and his two other ventures, Coss is fulfilling his mission to aid and uplift the formerly incarcerated community. On the episode, Coss shares how he found his passion for fitness after losing 70 pounds during his incarceration as well as his struggle to start a company as someone in and out of the prison system. He also discusses how his “figure it out and survive” motto has spurred him to create three ventures, including one in the legal cannabis industry. Episode Highlights Mission-driven businesses do good from front to back. Coss defines a mission-driven business as one that doesn't just say it's doing good upfront -- but also does something good on the back end. “You want to make money and do good as well,” he said. For Coss, the tripartite mission of CONBODY is to destigmatize the formerly incarcerated community, ease their transition back to society, and change the criminal justice system -- all barriers he's faced as a formerly incarcerated person himself. “I saw the pain I had to go through, and I really didn't want people who were my friend or my people that were coming out of the system to go through that,” he said. You don't need a formal business plan. Coss created his business plan for CONBODY while in solitary confinement. He didn't have a formal mission, list of values, or vision statement. But he did write down the extensive workout he used to get fit while incarcerated and how he could turn that into an opportunity. “I did what I wrote,” Coss said. “I came home and I started doing it in the local park where I grew up, and eventually, one person turned to two, to three, to five, to six, and my mission started evolving.” If you don't ask, you don't eat. Coss's mother always told him: If you don't ask, you don't eat. It's a strategy he took to heart when developing CONBODY. “When I came home, I validated by getting one customer in the street, and just stopping them and talking to them and telling them what I'm doing,” Coss said. “I got a gazillion nos, but fortunately enough, I've had a few yeses.” Coss eagerly shares his mother's advice with fellow entrepreneurs who have smart but unvalidated business plans. That includes Ivy League MBA students who have incredible, technical business ideas but have yet to ask whether anybody wants their products. “You gotta ask,” Coss said. “If you go to the market and nobody wants this shit you just lost a lot of time.” Resources + Links CONBODY: Website, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube Second Chance Studios: Website, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn CONBUD: Instagram, Facebook, Forbes write up Conbody the book Coss's Social Media: Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn Brian's Social Media: Twitter, Instagram, Facebook About Brian and the Mission Driven Business Podcast Brian Thompson, JD/CFP, is a tax attorney and certified financial planner who specializes in providing comprehensive financial planning to LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs who run mission-driven businesses. Coss Marte's story is going to blow your mind! You will not believe what happened to him in solitary confinement at the end of a 7-year prison sentence. So, if you think you can't change your circumstance or better your life, think again! In 2009, Coss Marte was sent to jail as the ringleader of a multi-million-dollar drug operation. He was also grossly overweight and warned by his physician that his current lifestyle if left unchecked, would likely kill him. Faced with this grim prognosis, Coss started to get in shape using the tools he had -- his prison cell and his own body weight. Within six months he lost 70 pounds and replicated his successful formula of bodyweight exercises with 20 other inmates. Then he launched CONBODY, a prison-style boot camp that has gained over 70,000+ clients and has hired 50+ formerly incarcerated individuals to teach fitness classes. Since the launch of his company, he's been featured in over 200 major media outlets such as NBC, CNN, The New York Times, Men's Health, and has been a 3-time TED Talk Speaker, and The Ellen DeGeneres Show. By the age of 23, Coss Marte was making over $2 million dollars a year in NYC selling cocaine. After getting caught & sentenced to 7 years in jail, Coss decided it was time to make a change. Listen to his inspiring story of how he created a fitness empire while in prison, and now helps reformed prisoners with employment!
Coss Marte grew up in New York's Lower East Side, where he began dealing drugs at a young age, with his first arrest at only thirteen years old. In prison, Marte was told by doctors that if he didn't start eating right and exercising, he was likely going to die within five years. This wakeup call for Marte motivated him to do calisthenics with his own body weight, losing over 70lbs in 6 months. Gaining the attention of others, Marte began training inmates, helping them lose over 1000 pounds collectively. It was in solitary confinemJoy Keys, podcast, women podcasters, black podcasters,Philly podcasters,Philadelphia,Saturday Mornings with Joy Keys,nt where Marte created a business plan to take his fitness program outside of his cell upon release; which became a reality in 2016 with the launch of CONBODY's first fitness studio, located on the same NYC street corner where Marte was arrested. The crew sit down with Coss Marte who went to prison 10 years ago, he was faced with not one, but two big challenges: lose weight and discover a legitimate career upon release. Luckily for him, overcoming the first obstacle helped him find the answer to the other. The 29-year-old former drug kingpin is helping others get into shape through his fitness company, Coss Athletics, which markets a "prison-style" boot camp based on his prison workout routine. And at the same time, he's finally putting that business sense to good use. Coss Marte is a former drug dealer who admits to pocketing $2 million a year on the sales of cocaine and marijuana by the time he was 19. But these days, as the founder of Conbody, Marte is selling exercise in $14-per-month increments (or $29 for each in-studio class), and rehabilitating formerly incarcerated people in the process (almost all of his staff and trainers have also served time). To that end, the Conbody website boasts that the company has worked with more than 100 previously incarcerated individuals with a 0 percent recidivism rate. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
On today's Finding Freedom Rewind we revisit an inspiring episode with Coss Marte. Coss has made two appearances on the show, this is the most recent one. Coss is the perfect example of how an individual put in the work to find their freedom. At the age of nineteen Coss was making more than $2 million per year selling illegal drugs using an elaborate delivery system. He reinvented how drugs were sold in his neighborhood and became the "Uber of the drug trade" before Uber even existed. At twenty-three Coss was arrested and convicted and spent more than 7 years in prison. During his incarceration Coss transformed his life. He lost 70 lbs in prison and changed his outlook on life. He shares how he went from running boot camps in the park to becoming a wildly successful entrepreneur and owner of a successful fitness company, ConBody. He also shares how he quickly pivoted when the pandemic hit and by doing so expanded his business when most of his competitors were closing down. Coss also co-hosts a podcast called Ex Dealer Ex Junkie.
At 19 years old, Coss Marte made over $2 million as a drug dealer. At 23, he was charged as the kingpin of one of the largest cocaine operations in New York City. Now, he is the founder of CONBODY, a prison-style fitness studio taught by former convicts reintegrating into society. Coss's story is an inspiring testament to a person's ability to change and the power of second chances. When Coss was sentenced to 7 years in prison, his doctor told him that he had 5 years to live due to his unhealthy weight—that math didn't work in his favor. He developed workout routines within his 9x6 cell, lost weight, then helped other inmates do the same. At Coss's bleakest point in prison that landed him in solitary confinement, one moment changed his life, prompting him to make what is sometimes the most difficult decision we face: choosing a better path. Coss Marte, former inmate, developed CONBODY, a prison style fitness bootcamp that hires formerly incarcerated individuals to teach fitness classes. It's the ultimate no-equipment, hardcore workout program using military-style bodyweight training techniques that he learned in prison. Coss was able to lose 70 pounds in six months with nothing but the walls and floor of his 9-by-6 prison cell. In this episode Coss reveals his 'spiritual awakening'' while locked in solitary confinement just weeks before he was scheduled to be released (after an altercation with a prison guard), and being faced with additional time to his sentence. He explains how his real message is about prison reform and changing the stigma between young professionals and formerly incarcerated individuals.
