Peggy Van Arnam has been making jewelry since she found herself with a skirt with which she had “nothing to wear.” During her career as a university administrator, she searched for unusual beads and stones as she traveled and made jewelry for herself and her family. In retirement she began taking classes, selling her pieces and approaching jewelry making as a business. Thus Uniquely Yours! was born. In 2002 Peggy co-founded a still thriving cooperative gallery in Upstate New York and remained a member until moving to Cary in 2016.Uniquely Yours! specializes in sterling, glass and gemstone jewelry. Using these materials, Peggy creates one-of-a-kind necklaces, bracelets and earrings. She is perhaps best known for her sterling chains and her work with Venetian glass. Many pieces of jewelry have a story behind them; some are custom designed. And making pieces longer or shorter to suit the customer is a common occurrence. After all, making it uniquely yours is what it's all about! She often incorporates fluid art techniques and decoupage for layered effects. Preferring to work on a large scale, Theresa enjoys developing customized art for specific spaces and audiences.Theresa believes color and shapes can inspire and energize and her goal is to make happy art that will make a space come to life and radiate positive energy. Sarah Cawn's mission is to design and create beautiful, unique, and functional glass objects.Initially using Tiffany stained glass techniques, Sarah has evolved into creating original fused glass works of art. Her innovative use of color, shapes and whimsical designs never fail to engage the viewer. Autumn Cobeland is a painter, muralist, triathlete, and Raleigh native. She holds a degree in Fine Arts and studied art in Florence, Italy. Her prints and paintings can be seen in galleries, shops, and private collections both nationally and internationally. Autumn has created a series of paintings devoted to the Triangle Greenway System, and she donates a percentage of the proceeds from print sales to the support of local greenways. Her studio is located in Artspace in downtown Raleigh. As an artist, Autumn's medium is paint. There is a term in the Japanese language “wabi sabi” it means (roughly) a celebration and appreciation for human-made objects that have imperfections. In our digital, computerized world, it is possible to create images to near perfection, clean lines, bright colors, and clear edges. Autumn is a painter, so the idea of spending hours in front of a computer to design her art is not nearly as appealing as playing with the color mixtures and placing brush to paper or canvas and developing some “wabi sabi” results. Susan Hensel's new innovative artwork, which blends commercial embroidery processes with sculptural concerns, is gaining attention and awards. Her knowledge of materials makes it possible for her to create small to large-scale hard-edge sculpture from soft fabrics that paradoxically keep their crisp form with minimal armatures. Her knowledge of the physics of color allows her to create shape-shifting displays employing the special reflective characteristics of embroidery thread with the goal to create opportunities to experience awe, rest and renewal in daily life.Susan Hensel received her BFA from University of Michigan with a double major in painting and sculpture and a concentration in ceramics. She has a history, to date, of more than 300 exhibitions, 35 of them solo, twenty + garnering awards. In the coming two years, Susan has solo and 2-person and group exhibitions scheduled in Ellicot, MD; Bloomington, MN ; Hopkins, MN; Duluth, MN and the Garrett Museum of Art, Garrett, Indiana. Growing up in Catskill, NY, Jim was constantly drawing. This led to being the art editor of his high school yearbook, majoring in Fine Arts at SUNY Plattsburgh, and obtaining a BS in Art Education from Florida International University of Miami in December 1979. Jim dreamed of being an art instructor and artist, however, that was put on a 35 year hold! Jim went to work for IBM in September 1979 in Boca Raton, FL. Later he transferred to Raleigh, NC in 1999. He retired from IBM as a Vice President in September 2014 and worked at Lenovo through January 2015. Now retired, Jim pursues his life-long dream of being an artist. His oil paintings include primarily landscapes, city scenes, and local Raleigh landmarks. He has also taught art (K - 5th grade and adult classes) part-time at Champion Learning Academy in Morrisville, N.C from October 2017 through June 2019Jim is an associate member of the American Impressionist Society, the Oil Painters of America, the Pastel Society of America, an Elected Associate Member of the American Artists Professional League, a member of the Pastel Society of Southern California, and a member of the Pastel Society of North Carolina.Jim's Artist Statement: My foundation is built from my early college years and most recently the instruction I have received in numerous workshops, most notably the workshops with my teacher, mentor, and friend Albert Handell. I am on a journey, a road to discovery of the artist that I am and will become. I paint what I want to paint - what excites me, what motivates me, and what challenges me. Maureen's story as an artist started with her dad who was a commercial and fine artist. At an early age her father discovered that he had a talent for art (it runs in the family). He decided to pursue art as his career even though his family felt that this was a terrible mistake. In addition to taking art classes, Maureen spent countless hours learning from father about art. He began with perspective and seeing beyond what your mind tells you. He taught her about light and color. He was a master of light. And as part of her training, he handed her the three primary colors (cyan, magenta, and yellow) and said this is all you get. This taught her how to create the full spectrum of color. Along with color, he instilled in Maureen the love of art. Most of all he taught her perseverance. You need a lot of dedication in the journey to become an artist. It's a wonderful voyage. Boots Quimby considers everything she has done in life a creative endeavor. From teaching high school and college to raising children and designing experiments during her doctoral work and as a cell biologist, Boots explored her creativity. In 2016 she picked up a paintbrush and decided it was time to paint, something Boots had wanted to do since childhood. The artist inside finally had the courage to express herself. She self-taught and considers every painting an experiment, working and reworking it until she gets to were she wants to go. This has taught Boots perseverance, patience and self-forgiveness. Ann works in oil, encaustic (hot beeswax) and collage. Her work in oil focuses principally on landscapes, architecture, and still life. Growing up in rural Virginia she spent much of her free time outdoors and learned to know and love the natural world; this sense of place has stayed with her throughout her life and informs her work. In landscapes she seeks to express the essence of places she has known and loved or places that she has visited and felt emotionally drawn to.Much of her work in encaustic also refers to landscapes of memory or imagination as she tries to convey some sense of the mystery that resides in the natural world. The fluidity of the hot wax makes this work freer and less controlled than her work in oil. Some of her work in encaustic is nonrepresentational, leaving the viewer free to attach his or her own meaning or emotional response to a piece. Natacha's practice uses experiences, seeing, touch, smell, for ideas she creates. This practice helps her be intuitive while constructing an object. Natasha creates in the space of her studio, but the memory of the actual experience and her psychological response are incorporated into the work. There are ideas that use other experiences such as books, movies, music, foods (smell and taste can convey a state of being), and textiles (touch is very important and can convey an idea or feeling). Natasha's experiences as a Latina woman concerning social justice as well as the experience of others in society are important to her. Although it can sound a bit trite when someone says they have a real passion for something, Dan really does have a burning desire to capture on a canvas the things in our lives that make us feel more ALIVE. Art has a way of making us slow down long enough to see and even experience something beautiful or poignant or precious about life. He literally can't wait to put paint (and a bit of his soul) on the canvas and for the next creative idea to materialize!Dan was attracted to art from an early age, inspired by the dramatic and colorful drawings in the comic books I collected (he especially loved The Flash and Batman). As a kid, Dan mowed yards so that he could buy my next comic book. That led him to drawing and painting. Dan started college as an art major and then moved into business and marketing. Bayou Gray is intrigued by the human form. The slump of a shoulder, the refraction of light in an iris. The subtle shifts that tell a tale far more than words ever could. The breadth of Bayou's work tries to capture the intimate meaning of those moments and pour it back upon you. In short, Bayou wants the viewer to feel the piece, and not just see it. To that end, his tools of choice all have some meaning. Beginning with panels primed with tempura, as a link to those before. Since life moments are varied, precious, shimmering, and easy to tear, Bayou paints on metal leaf with a palette based heavily in warm tones and transparent color, the luminosity of which gives skin tones the showcase that they deserve. An oil and watercolor painter, art workshop instructor, architectural illustrator, life time ardent reader, and writer of the occasion when painting is not sufficient to express his feeling and thoughts...JJ's childhood was spent in China during the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution (1966-1976). During that era of madness, drawing, writing and reading poetry kept him safe and sane, and shielded him from the chaotic world outside. Drawing and painting have become inseparable parts of JJ's life. They came to him naturally (and early) and have helped shape his view of the world and himself to a large degree.JJ was trained as an architect and architectural historian with professional degrees from both the US and China. He practiced architecture as well as taught architectural design and history.. As a fine artist, JJ draws his inspiration from both his eastern and western cultural roots, as well as his inquisitive mind and inner poetry. He excels in drawing, watercolor and oil painting, while exploring subjects such as: still life, landscape/cityscape, portrait and figure, Chinese calligraphy and brush painting. When it comes to her art Jnet has always had the desire to create something of beauty made from her hands. Her love of clay focuses on two main properties: the contrasts of transforming a soft malleable material into a rock hard object that retains the appearance of softness, and the ability to create unpredictable colors and designs on pottery and sculptures with fire. She strives to create sculpturally functional hand-built and wheel thrown forms inspired by joyful colors and nature. Her artwork does not attempt to address any issues facing us, but is a simple exploration of the expressive qualities of color and the sculptural qualities of a leaf, especially Hostas. The natural world is Lynne's source of greatest inspiration. Beginning in early childhood, her family camped and hiked around the US, visiting all 50 states. She comes from several generations of scientists, serious gardeners and avid birders, activities she has expanded on in her own life and which contribute to her love and interest in the environment and growing things. Typically, she works from her own photographs which she crops and edits prior to painting. Occasionally, she'll work from flowers and vegetables from her garden. Lynne has drawn and painted all her life. She spent most of her early years in Cleveland, OH and began her formal art study as a teenager at the Cleveland Institute of Art. She went on to major in art at the University of California, Berkeley where she received a BA. Interested in combining her 2D art with her sewing and knitting hobbies, she continued her applied art education at Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, receiving an A.A.S. in Textile and Surface Design in 1988. After several years creating textile designs for the fashion industry, Lynne indulged her interest in science and women's health and attended NYU's School of Nursing, earning a B.S. in Nursing in 1992. She moved to Chicago and spent the next decade working as a delivery room nurse. During the following years when her children were small, she resumed taking classes in painting, drawing and printmaking whenever she could. Once her 3 children were all in school, she returned to painting full time. Lynne and Chip have known each other for many years having attended elementary through high school together. Paintings that celebrate the every-day wonders of life mark the work that artist Beth Barger is known for. Through her contemporary impressionist style, she strives to give others a reason to contemplate the beauty found in the way the landscape changes as the sun moves across the sky, the warm shadows that embrace a familiar landmark, or the sparkle of whiskers on a much-loved family pet. Beth's paintings are infused with light and color creating a rich haven for her viewers to recall and honor their own treasured memories. After earning her Fine Arts Degree from East Carolina University in Graphic Design, Beth began her career in advertising and design. Beth's art calling was interrupted during the last 16 years of her career while she applied her subjective problem-solving skills to human resource challenges for an international corporation. In going full circle, she is returning to the fine arts to pursue her painting passion. To see Beth's work check out her website and follow her on Facebook & Instagram. As young as five, Alana drew. She loved to draw horses and Abe Lincoln and Santa Claus and anyone who offered to sit. At age nine, she took second place in a national art contest sponsored by Kellogg.Graduating with a degree in mathematics, Alana spent her professional career as a Capital Project Manager directing and managing the design, construction, and renovation of buildings for Harvard University and the University of Texas. When time permitted Alana would relax doing pastel portraits and pen and ink sketches. In 2007, taking a much-needed vacation, she joined a group of plein air artists who were in Amalfi, Italy. The trip was a turning point. It awakened her love of art and a desire to focus full time on painting. So, in 2008 she retired and began her second career as a professional artist.I met Alana at the opening of the Fine Art's League of Cary Annual Juried Show, where her work, "Reaching for Safe Harbor" took first place! For Thomas McKeon, glass art has been his passion for almost 30 years. When Tom first discovered glass, he worked exclusively in the stained glass world not only producing numerous pieces for sale through local art shows, but also teaching in the field when he was living in New Jersey. A full size reproduction of a Frank Lloyd Wright window for his own home sat at the very top of his bucket list for many years and, when completed, was considered the highlight of his works. But it left him still wanting more. After moving to North Carolina, he turned his attention to glass fusing and has set about studying and perfecting a variety of techniques, determined to learn as much as he could about all the intricacies of how glass behaves in a kiln.Tom's website: www.encoreglassart.comFB: @EncoreGlassArtTom's artist recommendations: Dale Chihuly (blown glass) Frank Lloyd Wright (leaded / stained glass) Tim Carey (Painterly Portrait fused and stained glass) Support the show
Meditative. Dreamy. Mesmerizing. These are some of the words that collectors use to describe Deborah Younglao's abstract paintings. Inspired by her love of nature, cryptic patterns and forms in her paintings wait to be discovered. They invite you into a tranquil space where you are free to leave reality for a while and lose yourself in the stories you find in them.Although her formal education was in Science (she holds an MS in Marine Biology from McGill University), Deborah's creative side led her to realize that her fascination with nature was aesthetic rather than strictly scientific. As an artist, Deborah is mostly self-taught. She has worked in several media, most recently in the fiber arts of wet felting and silk painting. An accomplished silk painter for many years - she achieved Master Silk Painter status from Silk Painters International. She has transitioned from a representational artist into an intuitive abstract expressionist, preferring to paint from the heart. Her paints of choice are fluid acrylics, and she loves watching colors, shapes and lines come to life on her canvas. The scientist in her is forever experimenting with new techniques and materials… fearlessly answering the question, “What would happen if…?”In addition to her native Caribbean island of Trinidad, Deborah has lived in Barbados, Ireland, Canada and 4 states in the US, including her current home of Cary, North Carolina. Her work can be found in private collections across the US and Caribbean.Deborah's work can be seen on her website www.deborahyounglao.com and in person at the Cary Gallery of Artists, in charming downtown Cary, NC.Facebook: @deborah.younglaoIG: @deborahyounglao.artDeb's artist recommendations:Georgia O'KeeffeHelen FrankenthalerFranz KlineMelissa Dion Murphy (aka MelyD)Rinske Douna Support the show

Ginnie started Blue Frog Designs in 1995, working out of her home studio in Cary, North Carolina and enjoying the flexibility to be at home with my kids. She designs and creates colorful, whimsical trinket boxes, bowls and other vessels, ornaments, and jewelry, as well as other functional and decorative art out of polymer clay.Using the millefiori or cane making technique, Ginnie layers the colored clay to create designs or images that run lengthwise through a tube of clay so that when sliced, each slice is a duplicate of the design. The cane designs and other interesting techniques are used in her polymer creations which are fired in a standard oven to harden the clay. Matt's various styles of art range from introspective and nostalgic to the curios and quirky, much like the many phases of life. His realist acrylic pieces carve light and shadow out of blank canvas, drawing the viewer back to quiet times and simple existences. Matt's more whimsical black and white line creations bend and skew reality to create a contemporary, yet timeless feel, often with a pop of color for excitement. He calls this collection work "SKEWZme" art due to their ability to elbow their way into the mind's eye. Kathy King is an award-winning jewelry artist, beading instructor and author of Bead Quilled Jewelry: New Beadwork Designs with Square Stitch. Kathy's innovative techniques have landed her sculptural designs on the cover of Bead & Button Magazine and in articles featured in Beadwork, Niche and Giftware News magazines.Kathy's work is strongly influenced by her engineering background. Ophelia Staton, a mixed media artist living in Creedmoor, NC. Currently she focuses mainly on abstract acrylic painting.Ophelia Staton, in her own words. This freedom of creating is like no other I have ever experienced, and my gift is to inspire others.I paint to express myself. Each mark, scribble or stroke of my brush is a conversation between me, my materials and the substrate. I show up and begin working with no preconceived notions or ideas of the end result. I see the process of painting as a journey and I am intrigued by the unknown of where each mark or brush stroke will take me.I absolutely love working in layers.
