We sit down with Daniel Keys at the opening of the Prix de West exhibition in Oklahoma. The artist talks about his career, his interests and his artwork, which involves a lot of still life objects, including floral subjects. Daniel also talks about his relationship with the late painter Richard Schmid, who is often cited as one of the most important realist painters of the last 50 years.
Artist bio Danieljkeys.com Daniel J. Keys was born on Oct. 7th 1985, in Fresno CA. Upon noticing a glimpse of artistic talent in him at an early age, Daniel was encouraged by his parents to pursue his passion, namely painting; and being entirely home educated, time was very permitting for him to develop his skill as a self taught artist. He started painting at the age of eleven using a paint set purchased with birthday money. It was later during his impressionable teenage years that Daniel discovered the work of Richard Schmid: a master artist whose works he later began emulating in his own paintings. Since that time Daniel has had opportunity to paint with his mentor, and Mr. Schmid has become a sort of art adviser to him throughout their close friendship. In recent times, Daniel has taken up pastel painting in addition to his work in oils. Alternating between the two mediums, he has already established himself in the world of pastel painting through a highly successful one-man show, winning multiple awards through the International Association of Pastel Society as well as Pastel Society of America, and published in the esteemed Pastel Journal. Daniel's work is now highly sought after by discerning collectors and hangs in many prominent collections throughout North America, Europe, and Russia. In addition to his art, he also teaches workshops that often draw students from around the world who seek out his esteemed instruction. He has won numerous awards including the Portrait Society of America's “Draper Grand Prize 2018” award, and his work has graced the covers of multiple magazines including Art of the West, American Artist, American Art Collector (twice), Plein Air Magazine, Pastel Journal, Pastel World, and Pratique des Arts. Currently, Daniel's new works are represented by the following fine art galleries: LEGACY GALLERY - Scottsdale A SENSE OF PLACE GALLERY - Fresno WEST WIND FINE ART - Walpole GALLERY1261 - Denver HIGHLANDS ART GALLERY - Lambertville

Maureen's story as an artist started with her dad who was a commercial and fine artist. At an early age her father discovered that he had a talent for art (it runs in the family). He decided to pursue art as his career even though his family felt that this was a terrible mistake. In addition to taking art classes, Maureen spent countless hours learning from father about art. He began with perspective and seeing beyond what your mind tells you. He taught her about light and color. He was a master of light. And as part of her training, he handed her the three primary colors (cyan, magenta, and yellow) and said this is all you get. This taught her how to create the full spectrum of color. Along with color, he instilled in Maureen the love of art. Most of all he taught her perseverance. You need a lot of dedication in the journey to become an artist. It's a wonderful voyage. https://www.dunawayfineart.com Michelle Dunaway is an American artist whose paintings are revered for their bold brushwork yet sensitive portrayal of emotions that capture the human experience. Dunaway exhibited a strong penchant for drawing the human form from a young age and that fascination has continued throughout her life and career. Her artwork has been featured in international exhibitions and publications including Fine Art Connoisseur, Art of the West, International Artist, American Art Collector, Southwest Art, and American Artist. Dunaway's work has received numerous awards and honors including Finalist and Award of Exceptional Merit at the 2010 Portrait Society of America's International Portrait Competition for her painting Katie and Jenni -The Daughters of Jane Seymour; a Certificate of Excellence from the Portrait Society of America in 2014 and 2017; Finalist and Award of Exceptional Merit at the 2016 and 2108 Portrait Society of America's International Portrait Competition; and Finalist in the Art Renewal Center's ARC Salon Competition 2019 winning the American Legacy of Fine Art Award. Although Dunaway paints and exhibits a variety of subject matter, her first love has always been portraiture. After studying anatomy and drawing at Art Center College of Design (Pasadena, CA), Dunaway continued her painting education by attending workshops with two prominent artists with whom she has become good friends over the years: Jeremy Lipking and Morgan Weistling. Both Lipking and Weistling encouraged Dunaway to pursue a career as a fine artist when they saw her work. Upon attending one of Lipking's very first workshops, Dunaway brought a painting in for the artist to critique. Lipking and his wife Danielle decided to purchase the painting for their collection. Lipking told Dunaway she was ready to be in galleries and showed the painting to the gallery where he exhibited in Beverly Hills and they subsequently invited Michelle to exhibit. Dunaway spent time in California painting from life extensively while showing at galleries in Los Angeles and Laguna Beach and doing private portrait commissions for local patrons. In 2009 she moved back to New Mexico, where she settled in a beautiful studio overlooking the Sandia Mountains, and was invited to show at a well-established gallery in Santa Fe. While working on paintings for gallery shows, Dunaway entered several competitions. She won the Best of Show in an online competition for her still life Mucha and Peonies and was juried into the prestigious Portrait Society of America's International Portrait Competition where her portrait painting of two sisters was chosen as one of 16 top finalists out of 1,300 worldwide entries. The painting was exhibited in Washington, DC at the Art of the Portrait Conference. Dunaway won an award for that painting and shortly thereafter received a phone call from renown artist Richard Schmid. Schmid expressed how impressed he was by her painting ability after seeing this portrait online and invited Dunaway to paint with him and his wife, artist Nancy Guzik, at his studio in Vermont. Through their close friendship over recent years, Schmid has advised and encouraged Dunaway in her work. "Michelle is very much a force in this movement toward excellence in painting," Schmid stated recently in his instructional video wherein he painted Dunaway's portrait. Dunaway receives invitations to give painting demonstrations, lecture, and teach internationally and these events attract artists who travel from around the world to study with her. Believing strongly in "passing on the torch" of knowledge in painting, she takes time from her busy schedule of shows and exhibitions to accept these invitations when possible. "It is extremely important to me that the legacy of strong painting continues for future generations," Dunaway states. "I have always been passionate about pursing excellence in my own work and constantly growing as an artist, and I feel a strong calling to help others reach their full potential as well. For me, creating great art is about putting light into the world. It is of course capturing the light that falls on a subject and translating that luminosity into the painting, but it's also about shining light whenever possible through teaching and passing on wisdom." After one such painting demonstration at the Portrait Society conference in 2015, Dunaway met and had a conversation with Richard Ormond, John Singer Sargent's grand-nephew. He told her something that touched her heart deeply, considering she reveres Sargent as her favorite painter. Ormond mentioned he had been in the audience and watched her main-stage painting demonstration. "I have spent most of my life concerned about preserving the legacy of Sargent's painting," he said, "but after watching you paint I am no longer worried." That was a profoundly meaningful moment for Dunaway and a great confirmation that she was spending her time wisely in teaching, volunteering, and mentoring in the arts while constantly pursuing higher levels of skill in her own painting. Dunaway exhibits in galleries throughout the United States, and her paintings are highly sought after by sophisticated collectors. Those collectors say that Dunaway's paintings capture much more than a likeness, that her work embodies a timeless quality and illuminates the essence of the individual. Dunaway's paintings hang in private collections throughout North America and Europe. She is currently represented by these fine art galleries. InSight Gallery (Fredericksburg TX) , Legacy Gallery (Scottsdale, Az and Bozeman, MT), VRFA Gallery (Laguna Beach CA) and Sage Creek Gallery (Santa Fe NM)

https://www.oldcityhallgallery.com A native of Maquoketa, Iowa, Rose Frantzen has gained national and international acclaim for her oil paintings from life that bring contemporary perspectives to a traditional alla prima approach. In addition to landscapes, still lifes, and figurative works, Frantzen creates serial and allegorical works that incorporate diverse stylistic elements along with gilding, stained glass, and mosaic. Frantzen's work has shown at the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery, the Butler Institute of American Art, the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art, the Denver Historical Museum, and as an award winner in the Portrait Society of America's International Portrait Competition. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Figge Art Museum, the Dubuque Museum of Art, the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art, the Brunnier Art Museum, the USDA, and the World Food Prize. Frantzen is a frequent demonstrator, guest lecturer, and panelist discussing art and the artist's life in the 21st century at museums and national art conventions. Her paintings have been featured in numerous national and international art magazines and journals, and she has been a frequent faculty member at the Portrait Society of America's Annual Conference, demonstrating portrait painting. Frantzen studied at the American Academy of Art in Chicago, the Palette & Chisel Academy with Richard Schmid, and at the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts, studying anatomy with the late Deane G. Keller. Portrait of Maquoketa, Frantzen's yearlong project in which she invited anyone in her hometown to sit and be painted, resulted in 180 portraits that were all shown at the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC in 2005/2006. In 2012/2013, she completed her vision for Portrait of Maquoketa by painting a 315 square foot landscape view of the town on 34 vertical panels that hold the portraits on the other side. As an installation at the Figge Art Museum in Davenport, Iowa, the panels were suspended from the ceiling throughout the gallery. When visitors sat at one end of the installation, all of the landscape panels coalesced into a unified view. The Figge Art Museum has purchased Portrait of Maquoketa and alternately shows and travels the installation. Frantzen is represented by Gallery 1261 in Denver, CO and by Old City Hall Gallery in Maquoketa, Iowa, where she shows with her husband, Charles Morris. Frantzen and her parents purchased Maquoketa's former city hall in 1991, converting the three story 1901 building into a gallery and studio space. Brian Buckrell is a full-time Canadian painter. After a long, successful career as a Professor of Veterinary Medicine, he made the decision to switch to a career doing one of the hardest things known to humankind: painting fine art. The transition wasn't easy - especially doing so much later in life while in his sixties. He admits there were times he felt like quitting. However, he stuck with it. Brian doggedly continued developing his painting skills. Recognizing the importance of learning the fundamentals of the craft, he attended many workshops and enrolled full-time at the highly acclaimed Jeff Watts Atelier. Buckrell's determination and dedication to the craft finally paid off. Today, despite challenging health issues that both he and his wife, Cathy, have to deal with, he enthusiastically creates bold, beautiful, expressive paintings of the great outdoors that they so much enjoy together. Because of the joy viewers experience in seeing his art, Brian's colorful paintings grace the homes of many collectors around the world. Acrylic is Brian's medium of choice. Modern innovations and developments in acrylic paint provide an exciting medium and playground for Brian to explore and experiment. It allows him to paint quickly what he loves to paint in the way he wants to paint. And, most of all – have fun! Now in his late seventies, Brian Buckrell proves that it's never too late to paint and have the Freedom to Play. I am thrilled to bring you an interview with award-winning painter Susan Lyon. Open and genuine, Susan shared her confidence struggles early in her career. She also gives frank advice on how artists can truly succeed in business, and looks at the life of a professional artist from a wholistic view with a strong spiritual component. In speaking with Susan, I felt as though I'd known her all my life, and I'm grateful for her time and giving spirit. Part two of this interview is available now in episode 42.Susan Lyon grew up in Oak Park, Illinois. Her initial interest in art was sparked by a PBS television show on Georgia O’Keefe, that inspired her to take weekend art classes. Lyon studied art at the American Academy of Art in Chicago and was an active participant in Chicago’s Palette and Chisel Club. It is there she first began exhibiting and selling her work. Susan works equally in oil, pastel, charcoal, and mixed media, drawing inspiration from painters of the Gilded Age, such as Anders Zorn, Joaquin Sorolla, and John Singer Sargent. She also is passionate about artists like Philip Malavin from Russia, and contemporary masters Richard Schmid and Nancy Guzik.Lyon’s technique is to paint wet on wet to start and then wet on dry for her finishing touches. “My style is realistic with as much impressionistic color as possible. I like to combine wide brushes for sweeping strokes in the background with small, soft brushes for subtle details in my center of interest. One of my greatest passions is drawing, I hope to show collectors that works on paper is a wonderful addition to a serious collection," she says.Susan lives in a rural area of North Carolina with her husband, artist Scott Burdick, whom she met at the Palette and Chisel Art Club in Chicago. She and her husband travel widely. “The excitement of traveling, seeing so many new sights and people, plus incredible works in museums; combined with the challenge of painting on the spot make me a travel addict! Even before I go on a trip I’m planning the one after,” she said. She has been in numerous publications, including “Art Talk”, “Art of the West”, and “International Artist”, to name just a few. You will find an extensive list of publications in the shownotes for this episode.Susan has also won dozens of Honors and Awards, including 1992 First Place in the Gold Medal Show — Palette and Chisel, Chicago, Gold Medal in the Oil Painters of America National Show 2020, and Finalist in the Portrait Society of America Gold Medal show. A complete list of Susan’s awards can also be found in the show notes at passionatepainterpodcast.com/episode41, as well as a list of just a few of her many exhibitions.

Johanne Mangi has been drawing all her life. Painting came later, but drawing was the foundation. Dogs have always been an important part of her life. Richard Schmid famously told Johanne, “Paint what you love, love what you paint”, and she took it to heart.Johanne took that to heart and decided that she wouldn’t just dabble in her chosen subject. She’d elevate it to Fine Art. She was taught to paint from life and so is known for the presence of live dogs at my workshops. They are there for inspiration and valuable information.Johanne captured the process in the DVD “The Fine Art of Painting Dog Portraits” published by Streamline Publishing. It is a best-seller, and she just released a course on painting horses. Johanne has been fortunate to be part of well-known painting groups including The Putney Painters founded by Richard Schmid, who is considered an icon in Representational Art. This group has produced some of the best known Representational artists today. Following in the footsteps of Putney Painters, Johanne has established her own painting group to share experiences and encouragement. Her work has garnered accolades and is collected internationally. She teaches throughout the United States, including Village Arts of Putney/VT, Scottsdale Artist School/Arizona, Whidbey Island Fine Art Studio/Washington, Madeline Island School of Art/ Wisconsin and Creative Arts Center in Cape Cod/Massachusetts. Her future workshops will include England and Holland. In this week's episode of the PleinAir Podcast, Publisher Eric Rhoads visits with the delightful artist and person Kathy Anderson. Casey Baugh is a New York based painter. His work can be described as narrative impressionistic realism. Specializing in oil paint and charcoal, he began painting at the age of 13 and began selling professionally at age 17. When he was only 21 years old, Baugh began showing in galleries and after four years of studying with artist Richard Schmid, he had his first solo show at age 25. He has made several television appearances and has been featured on the covers of many publications, including The Artist's Magazine, American Artist's Magazine, and American Art Collector. Baugh's art has evolved over time to become more narrative. Though still maintaining figures as his prime subject matter, he is telling more stories, and his series and exhibits are becoming more thematic. On a constant quest to push new boundaries, he is persistent in experimenting with his inspirations and artistic translations, pursuing more complicated compositions and achieving grander shows. Experience with electrical engineering as well as video and movie-making has attributed greatly in his use of props, set building, lighting, and translates to the overall harmony of his visual layouts. In this episode we talk about... His relationship with his mentor, realist artist, Richard Schmid and how that relationship has impacted his career. Thinking outside the box and not sticking to traditional educational formulas. Being fearless and freely exploring uncharted territories. The importance of coming up with tangible ideas before you put a paintbrush to a canvas. Balancing artistic freedom and financial stability. Working with what you have even if you don't have the right tools. www.artistdecoded.com www.instagram.com/artistdecoded www.twitter.com/yoshinostudios
