Whitney Gardner brought in new paintings for the New Young Guns Group Show, which opens in a few days so we decided to record a podcast at my studio in Tucson. The show features Jordan Walker, Josh Gibson, Maeve Eichelberger, and today's guest, Whitney. Now, she's been on the podcast before, which we filmed in November 2022, the same day I began representing her in my gallery. Two years and 100 episodes later, Whitney sheds light on what she's been up to the last couple of years. It's really quite interesting to speak to an artist at the beginning of their career, and then again while they are on the rise. You can feel it. It's wild to watch that cascade of interest pool up in smaller circles and eventually overflow into the Western art world at large. That's pretty much what's happened with Whitney since I've known her. She's won all these awards in the last two years and been picked up by another reputable gallery in Santa Fe, McLarry Fine Art. They had a show for her which did well, extremely well actually. These kinds of things begin adding up and next thing you know you're in museums, articles are being written on you in major magazines, and your art career is no longer a dream but a template for the next up-and-coming artist.I think all of these artists that make up the New Young Guns will feel that in some form or fashion. That's what you want as an artist. To be recognized by people for your hard work, dedication, and what you have to say. That being said, there are all-new responsibilities and considerations that come with having a shiny new platform like this.People tend to think "oh, fame is so great," or "wow, selling art is easier than ever." Well sure, it can be, but it also has the other aspects that go along with it. It becomes a duty of sorts to continue and produce work that resonates with people... and if it doesn't, well then you may not be able to pay the bills.Anyhow, this podcast was so fun. It's been a privilege to get to see Whitney's journey over the last two years. This upcoming show, which is going to be a really terrific will put her skills and the skills of her peers on full display. I genuinely hope you can make it.

Brian's work is inspired by and questions American society's live-to-work mentality. He is concerned with the cultural and environmental effects of this obsession, as well as the physical and mental health ramifications. In 1931 distinguished economist John Maynard Keynes published a short essay, Economic Possibilities for Our Grandchildren, where, among other ideas, he states that by 2030 the standard of living would be dramatically higher; people, liberated from want (and without the desire to consume for the sake of consumption), would work no more than fifteen hours a week, devoting the rest of their time to leisure and culture. His work envisions a world where his prediction has come true.

One of the great things about this job is that sometimes these things come in that are just wonderful gifts. One of those gifts happened  to come in today, and her name is Karen Schmidt. Karen's grandfather was Albert Schmidt, who was a very famous Santa Fe painter. She came in with a large collection of paintings that she found in Albert's house after her grandmother passed in 1989. The house is not just any old house either. it's a house that was built and designed by artist William Pennhallow Henderson. It's an important house. In fact, it's a historical landmark and it's in Tesuque, NM. So she comes in, I'm looking at the paintings and I'm thinking, wow, this is amazing.  These paintings came with her grandfather's house, and they somehow end up with me. Now I get the opportunity to sell this segment of the Albert Schmidt estate and it's a very unique and rewarding thing that can happen as a dealer. It's sort of a dream situation when you have that opportunity and I thought I would share it. So we sat down together for a little bit and recorded the conversation. It's not a very long podcast, but it's meaningful and just know that when you're seeing this, it is in the moment of when I'm meeting her for the first time and seeing these paintings for the first time.I knew who Albert Schmidt was. I've had his paintings. I love his paintings. So it's a nice little inside scoop of how this collection became available and how it got to Medicine Man Gallery. Anyhow,  I just wanted to share it with you and I hope you enjoy. H This is Art Dealer Diaries Podcast featuring Karen Schmidt, speaking on the paintings of her grandfather, Albert Schmidt.

We cover the struggles that he had to go through to get where is today and how all of these experiences, while difficult, made him a better artist.Russell will be the first to tell you that it doesn't happen overnight. They have their big show every third week of August (which you should all go to). It's a great show and while I was up there I fell in love with her work.Summer is a self-taught artist, hyper-focused on what she wants to achieve with her painting. When you're doing that as an artist and you have great talent, you can go very, very far. She's a real cowgirl too, living on a ranch with her husband raising Wagyu cattle as well as chickens. Summer does all of this while raising her three kids and somehow finding the time to paint every single day.We talk about what it takes to succeed with such a full life. You know, what's that magic serum that allows you to break free and be creative while successfully making it your profession? I think there's a lot to be learned from this podcast, especially if you're a younger artist and you're trying to figure it out. Well, she definitely figured it out. So, the title of my podcast is Art Dealer Diaries, and I named it that because it's all about the people that come through my life coincidentally and also by design. Well, today happened to be one of those special coincidental days. An artist happened to come into the gallery to poke around the Maynard Dixon Museum and it was like, "Oh, I love your material."I'd never known her,  never met her. I wasn't familiar with her work, but when I saw a portfolio of one Whitney Gardner, it just resonated greatly with me. I said, "Yeah, let's show your work if you want us to." And she was like, "Great." So that's how I met Whitney. She's quite unique and has her own voice that you can see when you look at her paintings.Whitney's been living in and painting the Mojave Desert for 12 years. That's a hard subject to try and tackle and she's done a beautiful job. So then I said, "Let's go record a podcast if you want to?" And she said, "Yeah, let's do it." So it was very fun, and spontaneous, and I'm just thrilled to have her on board at the gallery. So please enjoy, Whitney Gardner on episode 220 of the Art Dealer Diaries Podcast.Whitney Gardner - Fade to Nighthttps://www.medicinemangallery.com/catalog/product/view/id/70747Whitney Gardner - Awaiting First Rain:https://www.medicinemangallery.com/catalog/product/view/id/70751Whitney Gardner - High Lonely Sunhttps://www.medicinemangallery.com/catalog/product/view/id/70750Whitney Gardner - Horse Trail Gardenhttps://www.medicinemangallery.com/catalog/product/view/id/70749Whitney Gardner - Stone Washhttps://www.medicinemangallery.com/catalog/product/view/id/70748

In this episode of It's A Bonny Old Life, Bonny is joined by coloured pencil artist and oil painter, David Sandell. David discusses his past job as a freelance illustrator and how he enjoys having more creative control and freedom in his artwork as a part-time artist, which he does alongside running a design agency. He talks about how he uses a restricted colour palette to simplify the process, and the fact it isn't always necessary or possible to achieve the perfect colour. He explains the importance of bringing in other complimentary colours to bring out the values in the composition. Both Bonny and David discuss the need for an understanding of how to draw edges, and how many new artists feel they have to outline their subject. They speak about how the use of lost edges is important in ensuring your picture doesn't look like a cut-out and how using them can really bring a picture to life. David shares his opinions on what makes your artwork original and how the whole point of making your own artwork is not to copy another artists' style but to use your own uniqueness, as well as, how the concept of striving for the perfect piece of art won't be useful in helping you to make the next one even better. To find out more about David Sandell, you can find him on his website here, and on Instagram here.

I had Howard Post on the podcast today. We're talking about his new show "From Above" which opens on October 22nd  here at Medicine Man Gallery in Tucson and It'll run through the first couple of weeks in November. Howard is just such an interesting guy. I love his work and his dedication to being an artist. I've represented him for 25 years and he has an amazing story. I mean he's a real rodeo guy. Howard was all-around rodeo champion in high school, he competed in college and even went on to compete on the pro circuit. The thing is, he always wanted to be an artist. It wasn't really seen as something you do if you are in the rodeo world, and since his dad owned a feed store here in Tucson there wasn't a great deal of support behind Howard making it as a painter. So, this podcast is just an interesting look back at Howard's life, our relationship over the last 25 years, as well as his new show "From Above" which is all about Howard's take on the West from the signature aerial perspective that he's known for. It's a really interesting body of work that he's done for us and I can't wait for the opening on October 22, 2022.Again, he's an interesting guy and I really enjoy having Howard as both an artist I represent and a friend. Artist Spotlight with Chip Freund

An oil and watercolor painter, art workshop instructor, architectural illustrator,  life time ardent reader, and writer of the occasion when painting is not sufficient to express his feeling and thoughts...JJ's childhood was spent in China during the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution (1966-1976).  During that era of madness, drawing, writing and reading poetry kept him safe and sane, and shielded him from the chaotic world outside.  Drawing and painting have become inseparable parts of JJ's life.  They came to him naturally (and early) and have helped shape his view of the world and himself to a large degree.JJ was trained as an architect and architectural historian with professional degrees from both the US and China.  He practiced architecture as well as taught architectural design and history.. As a fine artist, JJ draws his inspiration from both his eastern and western cultural roots, as well as his inquisitive mind and inner poetry.  He excels in drawing, watercolor and oil painting, while exploring subjects such as: still life, landscape/cityscape, portrait and figure, Chinese calligraphy and brush painting. His work has been widely exhibited, and collected and has won numerous awards.  It has been featured in publications such as Watercolor Artist Magazine, SPLASH 21, The Art of Watercolour magazine, and Southwest Art Magazine.   (source: www.jjjiang.com)You can JJ's work on his website and follow him on Facebook & Instagram. I had artist Tom Gilleon on today, which was wonderful. He has such an interesting story. From being in the Navy to finding his way to Disney and becoming an important component in the Disney illustration world. He worked with Disney for many, many years and did some amazing work with Disney, eventually transitioning to digital illustration in 1998, selling his entire beadwork collection to get his hands on a high-powered computer. The quintessential Tom Gillleon painting is that of a tipi, but the new reality is that his digital work, and I've seen it live, is an interesting take on western landscapes in the 21st century. Oh yeah, did I mention he just turned 80?Personally, I think it's a very interesting podcast, especially for artists. To listen to an individual who had the foresight to gauge where the art world was headed and defied the uneasy feelings of uncertainty and fear to successfully push his art into a parallel but separate arena. It's just amazing. Tom even says to those listening to not be afraid to take chances as taking chances resulted in his biggest opportunities. And he's absolutely right. if you don't take a chance, you know, you're not going to be sitting in front of me recording a podcast about your success. So sometimes you have to do that in life and it's scary, it's hard, but it can also be the most rewarding thing in the world. So I think everyone will enjoy this podcast with a very important artist, Tom Gilleon.Bid on Tom Gilleon's painting 'Fort Mountain' here:https://www.wildlifeart.org/news/35th-annual-western-visions-art-show-sale-with-new-live-auction-componentLearn more about Tom Gilleon here:https://www.tomgilleon.art/

This week we cozy up in the bath with Austyn Weiner, who we finally had the pleasure of hosting at her first Secular Sabbath earlier this summer. Austyn found herself fully immersed in our sensory soundscape on Shabbat. Now, she's back for a more intimate conversation where we get to know her: a deep-thinking, witty-humored, large-scale oil painter. We dive into her thoughts on art, philosophy, and self-exploration. We discover what elements of connection have an impact in her life. From refining her creative practices to reshaping her outlook on the intricacies of familial relationships, this moment in time is full of change as Austyn realizes she's entering a significant new phase in her life. Austyn discovered her passion for creating when a middle school teacher saw her need to channel emotion into physical form by giving her clay and receiving it back in the form of a deranged object - her heightened emotions mysteriously settled once that the energy was transferred into an object form. From that point on, Austyn found that creating art was nearly a form of therapy. It was an outlet for intense self-expression, which manifested itself in how she creates today. Austyn has discovered her need to create is perpetual, as she thinks about painting, the elements of paint, and the way oil works all while trying to relax on a vacation. Art has become larger than life to her, both physically and metaphorically. Her paintings themselves have grown to be large-scale works of art in a larger-than-life studio. This large format method brings her back to a humble state of dwarfing herself in comparison to the canvas; her works become autobiographical in this way. Austyn aims to eliminate the stigma of good or bad art, instead asking the viewer to reimagine finished artworks as expressions of emotion that reflect the artist's tangible experience.Growing up in a Jewish family allowed for a heightened sense of intimacy for Austyn, with instated practices to best spend time together. Austyn's Jewish upbringing tied not only her immediate family together, but linked them with a worldwide cultural community. With the pros and cons of any religion, she chooses to focus on the softness that comes from generations before her. She finds beauty in Judaism and is in awe of all of the many ways in which one can be Jewish, loving the ways in which rituals develop idiosyncratically from one family to the next, one denomination to another, and even country to country. Relishing in the beauty of difference and a curiosity for the dynamics of people, this throughline is also prevalent in her work. It is also what initially drew her to Secular Sabbath and our  thread of connection we share in our upbringing within the culture of Judaism. Seeing the building blocks of community and creative freedom happening in front of her eyes at our Summer Soiree, she felt an immediate understanding of our desire to awaken the sensory self in everyone just as she's been exploring her own journey of rediscovery. She finds the Secular Sabbath approach lovable with inclusive day-of-rest practice, outside of religious, spiritual, or agnostic belief systems.Full of wisdom, energy, and expanding ideas, Austyn shares with us a world from which she's come, and leads us to where she's going. So please enjoy this tiny window into a big soulful inner landscape that exists within Austyn Weiner. To join Secular Sabbath membership, you can find us at secular-sabbath.com/membership. Typically, she works from her own photographs which she crops and edits prior to painting. Occasionally, she'll work from flowers and vegetables from her garden. Lynne has drawn and painted all her life. She spent most of her early years in Cleveland, OH and began her formal art study as a teenager at the Cleveland Institute of Art. She went on to major in art at the University of California, Berkeley where she received a BA. Interested in combining her 2D art with her sewing and knitting hobbies, she continued her applied art education at Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, receiving an A.A.S. in Textile and Surface Design in 1988. After several years creating textile designs for the fashion industry, Lynne indulged her interest in science and women's health and attended NYU's School of Nursing, earning a B.S. in Nursing in 1992. She moved to Chicago and spent the next decade working as a delivery room nurse.
