Episode Fifty of the Forward After Fifty podcast is about embracing adventure and stepping out of your comfort zone. My guest, Geraldine McFaul, is a freelance risk management consultant and shares her inspiring journey of walking from her home in Glasgow to Rome. She embarked on this adventure after her mother was diagnosed with vascular dementia, and she wanted to raise funds for Dementia UK and Mary's Meals in memory of her parents. Geraldine had minimal planning and relied on her intuition and the kindness of strangers along the way, the 'kindnappers as Geraldine named them'. She faced challenges, such as the heat wave and the daunting task of crossing the Alps, but she persevered and completed the journey in six months. The experience taught her the importance of setting her own pace, embracing flexibility, and trusting in herself. Geraldine plans to continue sharing her story through talks and writing a book. Sleep-deprived, a friend suggested exercise might help; Jo purchased a rowing machine, and after two weeks, she began to feel much better. Susan explores how women, typically the medical gatekeepers for their families, tend to be highly conscientious about taking care of themselves, yet at the same time, inadvertently undermine their care. They often hesitate to call the doctor when they don't feel well and worry that their doctor's visit will take time away from their families or work. They may hesitate to ask doctors the necessary questions and don't always comply with the doctor's instructions. According to statistics half of all women over forty-five will be a carer. You may have dedicated eighteen years plus to your children and just when you thought it was time for you an elderly relative needs attention. In fact, many of us will spend an average of seventeen years being a carer of our parents, partners, or friends. We all want everyone to remain in their own homes and be independent but inevitably some might need help. There are countries which are well-prepared to give their ageing population the best, in terms of support, others frankly are trailing well behind.  If so many of us are going to be carers do you know what to expect? And are we being educated sufficiently to take on this unpaid role?  Teresa Murray retirement coach who cared for both of her parents gives us some tips and ideas that might be useful based on her own experience.  The book Teresa mentions in this podcast is Contented Dementia by Oliver James
