Legionnaires' disease is a serious type of pneumonia caused by inhaling Legionella bacteria found in water. It is deadly, but so far no one in Grand Rapids has died. The Minnesota Department of Health confirmed the first case in April 2023, and since then has been investigating the source. MDH found the only common exposure was the municipal water supply. East-coast raised, Nashville based artist Mallory Johnson recently released her debut full length album Surprise Party. Produced by Grammy and Oscar award nominated producer Kent Wells (Dolly Parton, Paul Anka, Carly Pearce), Mallory collaborated with close friends and industry heavy hitters to co-write the album, including the likes of Carolyn Dawn Johnson, Patricia Conroy, Tenille Arts, Carli & Julie Kennedy (Twin Kennedy), Jason Blaine, and Kelly Prescott. "This album originally began as a 6-song EP with little direction, just songs I really loved or had planned on releasing as singles. I had already started pre-production with my producer Kent Wells when one evening I got together with Carli and Julie Kennedy and we started writing “Surprise Party.” Something clicked after we finished writing this song and the theme of the entire record just organically fell into place. It felt serendipitous," Mallory shares on the natural way in which the album came together. A CCMA-nominated artist, Mallory is turning heads in the country music scene with her recent Billboard-charting single (“Married”) and multiple award wins at the ECMAs and MusicNL Awards. The 2022 SiriusXM Top of the Country Semi-Finalist has received praise from the likes of CMT, The Boot, The Bluegrass Situation, and American Songwriter.

"One of the most challenging things for me after recovery was the expectation of picking up where I left off as a mother, daughter, sister, friend, and wife," says Julie Kennedy Smith, a brain injury survivor. She joins Lori to talk about recovery, the healing process, and how she spends part of her time inspiring other TBI survivors." At the time, I didn't know how to put what I knew deep down into words; the person I was before the accident was gone. She was dead. Even though she/I was here in body and spirit, had a husband, three kids, and was pregnant with my 4th, nothing about me was the same - and the shame of that was unbearable."

Episode 37: Surrendering to drugs and alcohol with Julie Kennedy My name is Julie, and I am an alcoholic. I have the disease of “more” If it gets me out of the way I'm feeling, even just for a moment, I continue to do it, regardless of the consequences. I have what’s called co-occurring disorders. Meaning I also suffer from clinical depression. Drinking was the “escape” from reality and my debilitating depression. Drinking always resulted in blackouts and progressed very quickly in three years. I admitted out loud that I was an alcoholic, at the age of 23. The problem with my thinking is, I wanted to rationalize and justify all the ways I was different. I was too young, I didn’t come from a broken home, and I had never been arrested. This disease does not discriminate, and I qualified as an alcoholic long before I surrendered. My liver enlarged, and I experienced withdrawals every day, I was spiritually bankrupt. Rock bottom can be whatever you choose it to be, its when you stop digging. After five failed attempts of rehabs and sober livings, I completely and utterly surrendered my will and life to my higher power, whom I call God on 12/2/09. If I had made a list of all the things id hope to get out of recovery, I would have sold myself short. I went back to school when I was two years sober and became a drug and alcohol counselor. I started my own Amazon store when I was three years sober. My favorite and most rewarding way to be of service has to be speaking to the kids at the high schools. I have been doing this since I was eight months sober. I hope to continue to share my experience, strength, and hope, along with a group of amazing people in recovery. Our youth is our future. Is my life perfect? Heck no! Honestly, I'm grateful for my struggles, as it continues to teach me humility and gives me strength. I've turned my pain, into purpose. Topics Discussed... ~When did you surrender to your addiction? ~What did surrendering look like to you? ~When did gratitude become a part of your recovery? ~How do you live in daily gratitude? For years, Becca and I have wanted to create a live performance of The Dirtbag Diaries. When 5Point Film Festival gurus Julie Kennedy and Beda Calhoun approached me earlier this year about creating a onstage storytelling hour at the festival, I immediately said yes. Baybe Champ and Frank Smethhurst join us on stage. Welcome to the 5Point Film Festival.
