California has one of the lowest literacy rates in the country and according to the National Center for Education Statistics, around one in five adults cannot read. One Costa Mesa father is working hard to change his own personal stats and encourage others in the world to read.Thirty-five-year-old Oliver James says he was forgotten in school and was seen as a bad child. He felt like adults gave up on him. But it wasn't just in school, he says he didn't have that extra push at home either. "There was not one book in my house. No, no, there was nothing," James recalled. "There were no books, no magazines. There was nothing."As the world slowed down during the pandemic, James decided that could be his chance to learn to read."It opened my mind to see if you can grow this little bit in this little time. Imagine what you can do in a time that you really focus. Like getting up every day, and spending five years reading. This week we're talk with Oliver James, a motivational speaker who's catch phrase on TikTok "What's up, I can't read" caught our attention and brought us into his incredible journey as he teaches himself to read at age 34. It's rare to hear someone talk about struggling to read as an adult, but in reality 21% of the adult population in America can't read and 54% read at a 6th grade level or lower. Oliver isn't alone, he's just one of the few people brave enough to talk about it. He's also spent the last year teaching himself how to read and is inspiring thousands of people to take on big challenges by documenting the process. His story is one of systemic abuse and neglect in the education system, childhood wounding, and overcoming major adversity. We were SO inspired by his journey and are honored to bring him to the pod. In this interview, Oliver and Jane look at why property investors often neglect the issue of personal brand, and why it harms their success to do so. Why perception matters so much, in property as well as other sectors, and why you must always prioritise and develop a strong and congruent brand presence. Oliver James is a passionate property brand advocate who discovered the key to growing a successful property business is through branding and marketing. In 2018 he was regularly networking in the property sector and realised that the majority of property investors had no idea how they were being perceived in their marketplace. His pockets were filled with a bunch of cheap looking cards with low quality logos on the back. The people he had just met were networking to meet investors to grow their professional property business, using amateur branding that sabotaged their success. Jane invited Oliver to the Smart Connector podcast to highlight that if you neglect your brand, it will end up costing you a LOT more in the long run as your ideal clients will not understand your business or your fit in the sector you belong to. Do you prioritise branding in your business? What does your brand say about you?
According to statistics half of all women over forty-five will be a carer. You may have dedicated eighteen years plus to your children and just when you thought it was time for you an elderly relative needs attention. In fact, many of us will spend an average of seventeen years being a carer of our parents, partners, or friends. We all want everyone to remain in their own homes and be independent but inevitably some might need help. There are countries which are well-prepared to give their ageing population the best, in terms of support, others frankly are trailing well behind. If so many of us are going to be carers do you know what to expect? And are we being educated sufficiently to take on this unpaid role? Teresa Murray retirement coach who cared for both of her parents gives us some tips and ideas that might be useful based on her own experience. The book Teresa mentions in this podcast is Contented Dementia by Oliver James
Pride is a tough topic for Oliver. From a young age, he felt the pressure of being the third Oliver James, feeling like he had to represent the family by holding the name. When he came out, he questioned whether he could do that any more. His father disowned him and said the rest of his family would never accept him. “My first pride event was right after my father disowned me….I was mourning my mother who had just passed, and I was feeling like an orphan…” These days, Oliver uses his meditation practice to unlock hearts and breaks chains. “I have the ability to meet people where they are and help them find peace. That is my purpose.” Oliver chooses to celebrate Pride in his own way, every day. “I just have to remember that I've done the work. I have to remind myself that I have come so far. I am worthy of being here.” And we have questions! Will we ever stop using our reverse gaydar to seek out homophobia? Do straight men really mind if we check them out? How can we more fully value our unique queerness? “We become the scaffolding other people can build themselves up against.” You can be part of the House of HOPECAST by following us on all the socials @HOPECASTPODCAST and visiting our website at hopecastpodcast.com If you like what we do, please rate and review us. The piece seeks to capture the feelings of walking a tightrope between the joys of aloneness and the sorrows of loneliness in an interregnum. Perhaps imagination fueled by desire offers the way through. Desire is my compass, the body my GPS, warm data my gyroscope. I acknowledge the Kaurna meyunna traditional custodians of the lands now referred to as Adelaide that inspired and where this piece was written. I pay respects to their elders, past, present and emerging." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Created during a time of quarantine in the global Coronavirus pandemic, A Moment Of Your Time's mission is to provide a space for expression, collaboration, community and solidarity. Welcome to Finance and Fury Looking around in Australia - increasing disparity in wealth, and social fragmentation That social fragmentation means Australians are become "more self-interested, more materialistic, more competitive". Our largest challenge as a society is the challenge of preserving social cohesion – where we are all working towards the same goals as a society – It is an Us Verse them – some want the 1% to pay for their homes, uni education, others want everyone to live in the dark by removing all CO2 use There’s no perfect society - We have the inevitable consequence of living in bigger, faster cities and working in more competitive workplaces. Our bodies respond to stressful events with a surge of adrenaline, which increases our reaction speed and helps ensure our survival - Trouble is, our bodies aren’t designed to cope with repeated stressful events and adrenaline rushes. If more "jobs and growth" and the higher incomes they bring are intended to make us happier, maybe governments would do better by us if they switched their objective from increasing happiness to reducing unhappiness. But Governments aren’t responsible for this – they are the reason why we are in a lot of messes It is up to you – Today looking back at the basics Human behaviour – How do we act when we have something we didn’t work for (or earn?) like UBI or government incomes Won’t make you happy – Without the ongoing work for something, dopamine release isn’t going to be as great Working on the goal is what provides longer sustained releases of dopamine My experience – Sanding a deck – if I had paid someone to do it then there wouldn’t be that feeling of achievement Beyond dopamine Serotonin Status – Serotonin – from our position in a hierarchy - Spending money for nicer cars, suits, watches – Try to live up to an ideal image. Doesn’t actually increase serotonin – Fake it till you make it doesn’t work here if – Your brain knows that you are just flashy/show with no substance The belief (anticipation) that spending money will give dopamine and serotonin becomes a dangerous cycle Without fulfilment – Just have to keep spending to keep up these feelings Also – Turning to easy releases of dopamine - The wrong way to do it – Easy releases of dopamine Gambling – The thrill – Uncertainty and anticipation are strong here But not sustainable – Only lose money to get dopamine Risky investment – Get rich quick schemes – Often just lose money Hedonic Treadmill - The tendency to revert back to a standard level of happiness Money/goals - despite a change in fortune or the achievement of major goals. As a person makes more money, expectations and desires rise in tandem, which results in no permanent gain in happiness. But – to feel happier we need to then spend more once you are hooked on this loop - MC hammer – paid his entourage first………didn’t work so well. The economists’ basic model views us as individuals, motivated by self-interest, and the goal of faster growth in the economy is aimed at raising our materialstandard of living And if some of our problems stem from changing technology– pursuing friendship via screens, for instance Economists assume that economic growth will leave us all better off. Most take little interest in how our social wellbeing is Our real incomes have grown considerably over the years – even for people at the bottom – and economic reform can take a fair bit of the credit. It can take most of the credit for the remarkable truth that, unlike all the other rich countries, we’ve gone for 27 years without our least fortunate experiencing the great economic and social pain of recession and mass job loss. But though most of us are earning and spending more than ever, there’s evidence we’re enjoying it less. Our higher material living standards have come at the cost of increasing social and health problems. Australians are wealthier than ever - but also more sleep-deprived, overweight, overmedicated and anxious and unhappy – taking these feelings out of society and pushing the blame onto things like Climate Change – form of projection of individual problems against a common enemy But not helpful and won't solve the real reasons - Economists generally take little interest in social and health problems, regarding them as outside their field. But though problems such as loneliness, stress, anxiety, depression and obesity were with us long before the arrival of consumeristic cultures – but have got worse since the mid-1980s As our material problems have disappeared – you make up our own problems - social media and relative lifestyle of others that can be seen at a level never been seen in human history We can blame any Economic theory you want but the truth is when you watch what is happening around the world it is quite evident that we are an extremely lucky society – but when we live unhealthy lifestyles, our unhappiness, our huge suicide rates shows material focus isn’t making us happier or really wealthier beyond lifestyle assets Politically – drive division based around where you sit in the wealth and lifestyle spectrum - The economic models require conspicuous consumption, which has created the affluenza virus Everyone has heard the statement - More money more problems – Contradictory statement – can be both true and false False – Money is used in exchange for what you want – cover bills, emergency – more money = less problems True – The love of money, or the stuff that comes along with it, or not valuing money = lead to problems Depending on which one you resonate with – healthy view of money, or cynical view Cynic – a person who believes that people are motivated purely by self-interest – i.e. more money is selfish Oscar Wilde- a cynic was 'a man who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.' Conspicuous consumption Conspicuous consumption - spending money on acquiring luxury goods or services to publicly display economic power = income or accumulated wealth of the individual Why does this occur? You aren’t going to carry around a bank statement/share portfolio Expressions of wealth then becomes materialistic – but this reduces your bank balance Exchange of wealth for things To the conspicuous consumer - the public display economic power is a means of their social status Conspicuous consumption can eventually become invidious consumption - meant to provoke the envy of other people But works against them - when someone else displays a superior socio-economic status – this hits your serotonin Created a new form of illness – Affluenza (not the flu) Defined as "a painful, contagious, socially transmitted condition of overload, debt, anxiety, and waste resulting from the dogged pursuit of more" – Economic problem – unlimited wants, finite resources psychologist Oliver James – looking into the correlation between the increase in affluenza and the resulting increase in material inequality: the more unequal a society, the greater the unhappiness of its citizens But this only occurs in a society where the material is held in highest value Says more about Culture than inequality – what does it matter if someone has more stuff than you? If the economy has been doing so well, why are we not becoming happier? Are you truly lacking? Or do others have more than you? Social media - online image sharing - Instagram – Overexposure - Previously was only what you could see Back in the day – your neighbour had more goats then you - Then Your neighbour had a better car – or a TV Now we see everyone – extreme wealth – billionaires with cars, private jets Keeping up with the jones - New race to the bottom – these platforms are designed to stimulate dopamine – red notification buttons Why? Competition for lack of substance is being fuel – marketing and advertising – create artificial needs the manipulative methods used by the advertising industry – nothing new Having celebrities (who people idolize) promote watches, cars, perfumes, etc. Related to the stimulation of artificial needs Where it comes from – Marketing triggers your Spending habits – marketers are smart – trigger neurotransmitters Dopamine – Reward system – Buying something is the easiest way to get this Serotonin – Status symbols – feeling higher up in the social picking order Money provides both of these things – If your brain connect serotonin to what others can see – then you can get trapped Serotonin is harder to do – Does require a bit more self-confidence (self-esteem) to be happy not chasing the way out through buying things – but your brain knows you are faking it if you buy knock off goods Societies can remove the negative consumerist effects by pursuing real needs over perceived wants, and by defining themselves as having value independent of their material possessions Price Versus Value – With investing as well Compare two shares – one with price above value, one with price below value – what to buy? Affluenza eventually leads to overconsumption – enter a cycle of consumer debt or overworking to waste money on depreciating goods Cars, jewellery, etc – try to sell second hand – learn what a depreciating asset really is Creates a pressure lead to psychological disorders, alienation and distress Cycle to self-medicate with mood-altering drugs and excessive alcohol consumption Consumerism as a primary source of stress and dissatisfaction because it creates a society of individualistic consumers People who measure both social status and general happiness by an unattainable quantity of material possessions Where more money can be more problems – if you constantly need more money = more problems in stress Downshifting – Spending habits This realignment of spending priorities promotes the functional utility of goods over their ability to convey status which is evident in downshifters being generally less brand-conscious Identify the need for an "alternative political philosophy", and the book concludes with a "political manifesto for wellbeing" Instead of buying goods for personal satisfaction, consumption down-shifting, purchasing only the necessities, is a way to focus on quality of life rather than quantity. The long-term effect of downshifting can include an escape from what has been described as economic materialism, as well as reduce the "stress and psychological expense that may accompany economic materialism". Focusing life goals on personal fulfillment, as well as building personal relationships instead of the all-consuming pursuit of economic success What are the elements that help? Regaining control – Finances shouldn’t control you – Having control/certainty reduces stress – Knowing what you are in for helps, but being able to control it works better Tail wagging the dog – Financially stressed people spend to feel better Have $10k in CC debt, so spend $300 on a night out to make it better – spending gives control But you can get control over the debt – forming good habits and increase certainty What you can do - Endowment effect – Put more value to what you already own Turn it into thinking about Keeping your money – put a premium on your spending habits Essentials – 0% - no need to put a FV on this – unless you think a porche is an essential Non-essentials – Gross the price up by a factor: Example - New TV is $3,000 – Life of TV is 10 years – Earn 7% on that over the same time - Is the TV worth $6,000? Opportunity cost - To part with your money - the item better be worth it Have to change habits though - Ways to solve – Break Three timeframes to focus on Summary – Know that most of what you see on social media is a lie – people only show their best sides Don’t try to live up to anyone else – set your values – what is important to you Know the value vs the price – regain control over your finances and happiness Thanks for listening, if you want to get in contact you can do so here: http://financeandfury.com.au/contact/

What makes us who we are? Child psychologist and writer Oliver James shares his new findings on the nature-nurture debate. Genetics is often cited as the key factor in explaining what makes us who we are. Recently, however, there is increasing weight given to the importance of our childhood in the formation of our ‘persona’. It is our upbringing, and less so our genes, that is critical to achieving wellbeing and fulfilment across our lifespan. The implications of this are profound. As adults we retain the ability to change, but what we learn as children is crucial and, therefore, education is key to shaping who we are individually - and our society as a whole.
On Start the Week Mary-Ann Sieghart asks why some people succeed while others fail. She talks to the journalist Helen Pearson about the Life Project, a study of the health, wellbeing and life chances of thousands of British children, started in 1946. The television producer Joseph Bullman also charts a series of families back to the Victorian times to look at social mobility through the generations. The psychologist Oliver James wades into the nature/ nurture debate by arguing that we are the result of our environment and upbringing, but the scientist Marcus Munafò says there is increasing evidence of genetic links to who we are and what we do. Producer: Katy Hickman.

To debate, Anne McElvoy is joined by broadcaster Kate Adie, clinical psychologist Oliver James, The Times columnist David Aaronovitch and philosopher Julian Baggini. Cognitive psychologist, Steven Pinker, has been dubbed "science's agent provocateur". Pinker studies how the mind works. Presenter Jim al-Khalili wants to find out how his mind works. Pinker replies: "as a psychologist you look at your own life as data and say geez that's what I'm like". From verbs to violence, he's author of several books that many say are mind-changing. He's now something of a science superstar, but his early experiments with electrodes on rats didn't quite go according to plan: "I realised then that that kind of science required a level of meticulousness that I just didn't have". So instead of studying neuroscience, he became a cognitive psychologist. Now perhaps better known for his writing than his science, he shot to fame with his book The Language Instinct, based on his early studies of how children tackle irregular verbs, for example saying "holded" not held, and "digged" instead of dug. These cute sounding mistakes are proof that three year olds are grammatical geniuses, he says. And he met his wife Rebecca Goldstein over an irregular verb. Later, Pinker set the cat among the social science pigeons by stressing the importance of nature rather than nurture: an assertion that led to some bitter arguments with, among others, the psychologist Oliver James. He readily admits that genes aren't everything: he's decided not to have children and says "if my genes don't like it, they can go jump in the lake". But he says, "there's a phobia of genetics that it's time to get over". Our failure to even think about genetic influences has given us a false impression of the amount of influence parents have over their children: it's skewed the science. Parents like to think that they mould and shape their children in certain ways but Pinker argues, as long as children are not abused, parenting makes little difference to how they turn out at 18. His most recent book 'The Better Angels of Our Nature' is about the decline in global violence from 8500 BC. Despite two World Wars, Vietnam, Kosovo, Iraq, Darfur and many others, Pinker asserts that we are living in the most peaceful times ever and wants to know why our better angels triumph over our inner demons. Is he now showing the better angel of his Nature? Each week on The Life Scientific, Jim al-Khalili invites a leading scientist to tell us about their life and work: he wants to get under their skin and into their minds. And he'll ask what their discoveries might do for us. He talks to Nobel laureates as well as the next generation of beautiful minds and finds out what inspired them to do science in the first place and what motivates them to keep going. Fellow scientists will comment on their work, putting it in context and offering alternative perspectives. Future guests include: astronomer Jocelyn Bell-Burnell; the brains behind the Human Genome Project, John Sulston; Molly Stevens, a tissue engineer who's work growing bones could mean the end of metal pins for broken legs; Hugh Montgomery, who discovered the fitness gene. Themes and ideas from the interviews will be explored on The Life Scientific website, which will aggregate some of the best Radio 4 Science archive around the topics discussed in the programmes.
Clinical psychologist, writer, broadcaster and rather clever fellow Oliver James gets a lift into Oxford where he appeared at a book festival
James Naughtie talks to the psychologist Oliver James. He joins an audience of readers to put his case against 'affluenza', a virus which he says is sweeping through the English-speaking world. Written just before the advent of the credit crunch, he points out that the aspiration to and trappings of affluence might be emotionally harmful.
By placing too high a value on the material aspects of life, English speaking nations put themselves at twice the risk of mental disorder over their mainland European counterparts. This overemphasis on materialism has its roots in the ideologies and policies of the Thatcher administration in the UK and the Reagan administration in the USA. Through placing an over-emphasis on materialism, these perspectives led to people spending less time on meeting fundamental human needs, resulting in increased mental disorder. A greater focus on other aspects of life is needed to restore the balance.
Oliver talks about his new film with Hilary Duff.
