Today I'm talking about creating intentional space for family time starts with making intentional time for you. We get caught up in the lie that if we don't spend all of this time with our kids that we are some how less of a parent The shift in mothers going to work out of the home Through lived experiences that we were able to look at our traumas holistically and recognize the patterns than needed to change. I see this in more of my mothers mothers generation, where it was still fairly uncommon for women to work outside of the home and very much shamed if actually done. The reality of raising kids today being "busier" The "expectancy" to get ALL of these things done with limited time as working moms Identify major pain points and solve those solutions first. Write it out and really work through the cost associated and it's worth to your family unit. Your husband can help! Michael and I are excited for an upcoming episode about this exact point, so more to come on how your partner is not "helping you out" he's doing his part & you should not feel guilty. Be honest and forth coming about your needs and expectations Ultimately, avoid busy-ness and make time for things that matter to you - Taco Tuesday & game night - 1:1 dates with each kid Create routines and habits that will help you to make life a little easier For example, pizza on Tuesdays because Michael works late Sunday set to review the calendar for the week ahead and do our marriage journal Hello lovely, Meg here, I'm glad you stopped by to listen in! Play Episode Listen Later Feb 27, 2023 38:54

Today I'm talking about how there are no shortcuts to becoming who you were meant to be. The journey is worth being traveled. Typically, I'll record episodes, weeks if not months in advance but after a weekend of filling my cup I had to share this morning. This notion that somehow we will wake up to be who we were meant to be, tomorrow is something that continues to be brought up. As if we can simply do a few right things or if somehow we do "all the right things" we will suddenly have it all figured out. - "riding a bike" - john wooden, learning to tie your shoes https://www.riskology.co/better-shoelaces/ - my story -- Growing up, even today my dad has said on occasion, "I'm still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up" if you heard him say this as a stranger walking by, you wouldn't know that he's a distinguished attorney who specializes Mergers and Acquisitions, compliance, corporate finance, corporate governance, employee benefits, insurance, litigation management, and securities law. Knowing what I know about my father, it's always encouraged me to look beyond what I'm doing in the present moment and how I can truly be "anything I want to be" While yes, I have specific goals in mind there are things I'm doing today that I know won't last forever. - You may be surprised to learn that after my family moved from state to state and I tried to keep up with the changes in college requirements, I eventually dropped out of college just a year or so short of a diploma. Feeling the stress to begin paying back my original student loans and not having any real direction at the time I was getting by as I had throughout most of my life on hope & a dream but there was no clear vision and without any mindfulness practices in place, there's really only one thing to attribute my success or lack of falling flat on my face too, so thank you, God. - We moved consistently every 1-3 years throughout my childhood making me a master of fitting in but this ultimately led to me lying and doing my best to fit into places when I didn't belong and so desperately wanted to feel that sense of belonging that I see now. But as a child, I was not seen for those lies and shortcomings as a coping strategy but I was told that I was a "story teller" and accused of being a liar. Maybe that's why one of my core values today is honesty. If you are a close friend you know that I would rather be told the ugliest truth than a lie and if you do lie, it's almost impossible for me to come back from. Still working through that. - I didn't just wake up one day and decide to be the woman I am today. It took small consistent steps to better who I am, not being afraid to start shedding light on some of the really awful truths that I was afraid of anyone finding out from my past, including me. - Therapy, lots of therapy, from EMDR to traditional talk therapy and neurofeedback. I am a huge advocate of therapy and finding the right therapist. I have actually stood up and respectfully walked out of a therapist's office after she asked me what I thought I should be doing. She was clearly in over her head and did not have much to offer me after my extensive therapy sessions of the past. I am begging you, if you've had a bad experience, don't let that stop you from finding a good one. It's not always the perfect fit the first time but you are worth finding the right match. - daily meditation, still sometimes a struggle to fit in - movement - practicing "clear is kind" - shitty first drafts are a way of life for my otherwise brash personality, I am an enneagram 8, the challenger, a strong visionary and hell hath no fury like a Meghan focused, although those moments are fleeting, especially while pregnant without my ADHD medication but watch out world. In today's episode of It's a lovely time, I'm looking back at how the relationships I have today were forged by the relationships of my past. Ending the season, the same way it started, with rapid fire episodes to close out each category. Taking a moment to reflect and vulnerably share, before stepping into season 2. As I've continued to say, living with intentionality and purpose is incredibly important to me. I've been feeling called to share more about where I've been before I continue to share today's experiences and where I'm going. I look forward to hearing from you and coming back to Season 2 refreshed and ready. I'm glad you're here. ----- How we were treated in childhood shapes all of us and influences the adult relationships we seek and pour ourselves into Our adult relationships, from friendships to romantic and co-workers, are genuinely shaped, informed, and impacted by our upbringing. Our relationship with God first and then ourselves has to come before any additional relationships. Even if you're in the middle of what could be a great friendship or marriage, to seek lasting quality we must reflect and take the time to grow before we can continue to flourish. For me, the story goes, "people leave," so for years, instead of letting people leave or hurt me, I did everything I could to make sure I was the one in control. If anyone was leaving, it would be me or on my terms. Obviously, this was not healthy but I had zero self awareness around this. My friendships, jobs, relationships, everything was impacted. If I every started to feel too much or love something or some one I made a wedge and either forced them out or took myself out of the equation all together. There was a lot of hurt & pain for me but especially those I impacted. A lot of those decisions were made with my reptilian brain, in survival mode. I was in survival mode for almost a decade. And while our previous relationships might have a negative impact on us, it's not an excuse for poor behavior or mistreatment of others. So we must do the work to grow within to step into who we were meant to be. In God's eyes, we were not meant to be perfect, so release that expectation and move in the work. Understanding that, this is work we will continue to do throughout our lives. It wasn't until I allowed myself to be loved that I was able to grow and seek my full potential. When people left to realize that was going to be ok and often times, it was not in my control. But if it was, how to appropriately react, respond and make lasting change. The quality of our relationships can determine the quality of our lives, so let's start by defining what you want out of relationships so that you can be fully grounded in who you are before stepping into and trying to nurture someone else. It's been quiet around here lately and frankly, i've been swimming against the current, feeling caught in the pull, making strokes inch by inch to get back to the shore. I use the analogy of water because I can relate to it love ocean, i love the water and it's sometimes baffling to me when i lay my head on the pillow at night how i am landlocked. but I feel the appreciation more when i get to visit the ocean instead of being near it every day. Or at least that's what I'm telling myself! But the heart of what i'm telling you it, I am constantly reminded that my todo list is not done yet and this begs the question, will we ever be? Life comes at you fast, especially in the world we live in today and when you start adding in children, businesses and friendships there is a lot to take in, get done and do do do but what I really want to DO is to be. Even if you don't see it in the moment, the most challenging times of your life, when you're forced to take a pause, be still and grow forward are often the moments before the best days. I want to leave a legacy and for me that means being able to live intentionally so that the impact I leave is lasting. I want to take pause today and honor each of our stories that has lead us to where we are in our path and I can't think of a better way to close out the first season of the podcast than sharing why i am here today and some of the integral pieces of what got me here. why i am able to show up like i do and how i am working to live intentionally, it's not a race and their is no finish line, just a beautiful journey and i want to look around and enjoy the moments that make up my beautiful life. One of the hardest days and ultimately led to the most trying months of my life was all part of a divine path that we were meant to follow. The road less traveled is typically tumultuous, makes your stomach twist and turn as you face uncertain terrain ahead and tests your faith. If you are willing to let go, let God and lean into your faith, oh how far you can grow. Let's take a quick job back so I can catch you up. Two years ago, we went on our first family "vacation" when the twins were 1 month old. This trip, led to the following post, sharing the real and hard reality that we were faced with in that moment. Sharing, vulnerably, honestly, without pause. Coming off of a twin pregnancy, throughout the pandemic, after having been forced to close our business for an extended period of time, bringing so much uncertainty and unknown, just like the rest of the world. It was hard. Our struggles were not more weighted than others but they were ours and when you are going through something hard, you expect the people who you love most to show up. “Sounds like a lot of work” This has changed the trajectory of so many things in out lives for the better, I can see that now but it was hard in the moment. to speak to yourself (about your body) just like you would your daughter

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 29, 2022 33:50

In today's world of self awareness and real bodies being a major focus and topic of conversation, it's baffling that we are still struggling to speak kindly to our bodies. The impact that it has not only on our own mental health but the implied impact to those around us without the acknowledgment of trauma is truly something we need to turn our focus towards. the way you speak to yourself matters stopping or all together avoiding the shame spiral holding ourselves accountable and forgiving when we're just plain human the way you speak about yourself out loud and who is listening ^ this impacts your daughters, co workers, friends, etc no body shaming rule for my team you don't get to comment on peoples body, and what people think of you is none of your business Today, we're getting vulnerable as Meg shares a glimpse into her background and disordered eating, just a reminder that just because it's not a traditional ED doesn't mean it's not there. Why seeking help & understanding rather than feeling shame is so important. What if... you chose to love your body & take care of it because it's your ONE body what if you decided to speak kindly to yourself even if you don't love where you're at in this exact moment and how could this not only change your life but the trajectory for the life of your children & future generations Let's talk about it. in our house we talk about food in colors and as energy source treating ourselves and finding balance without shame and indulgence why you should avoid band wagon dieting Today, we're challenging you to stop comparing & start sharing, hopeful to inspire women to talk about their journeys and find a way to connect with friends in a positive, uplifting way vs.attacking ourselves and finding ways to feed into negativity. I leave you with the most pivotal part of my journey, that allowed me to get out of a place of self deprivation & hating my body. My therapist asked me to look in the mirror & speak to myself as though i was speaking to my future daughter, out loud the way I would say to her how I felt about her body, with all of its flaws & imperfections, because as humans we have all of the above. Even though I didn't have any children yet, this changed everything. I would never, under any circumstances speak to my unborn (at that time) child in the way I had been speaking to myself. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/its-a-lovely-time/message

In today's episode, Meg and Michael sit down and talk about stealth expectations as referenced by Brene Brown in Atlas of the heart. How having systems and communication breakdowns in place help to keep us out of trouble when it comes to resentment and frustration. We are diving into our marriage journal question, sort of on accident and sharing vulnerably how we've grown and shifted to continually work on our marriage even when it was not easy. Our relationship is the number one priority in our home, aside from our relationship with God and the hard work is worth the amazing relationship we have today. Why stealth expectations used to start fights & unintentionally making Michael feel like i was upset The truth: Meg just wanted to get things done & needed help with the kids this advice can be applied to trips, holidays, days off, etc... When you intentionally communicate, you set the tone for the expectations of the day Our weekly touch base marriage check in - something that made you smile this week - 3 things grateful today - something that was difficult for you this week - any unspoken beef from prior week - is any thing i can send energy or good vibes to for the week ahead - what's one way i can be there without you having to ask this week Set yourself up for success, as a couple & a family, consider the following for special events, day trips, sunday chores or family vacas - what would each of you like to do/ accomplish - what are the non negotiables you'd like to do/ see/ experience And don't forget to check in- maybe things have changed Avoiding stealth expectations helps to avoid unspoken resentment friendly reminder: you always have the choice to rise to the occasion and your marriage can be as great as you hope for it to be, no matter where you come from or what your learned behaviors are. Identifying what's most important to you is a great place to start. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/its-a-lovely-time/message

In this episode, we're having some fun and talking about the behind the scenes of what makes us work. I'm asking my mom some questions about my childhood and how it felt to watch me become a mother, leave my corporate job and risk everything to buy my studio and so much more. We're just hanging out having a lovely time catching up without talking over babies. Having and maintaining a relationship with our parents as adults can be very challenging for some for others it comes naturally but no matter where you are you are worthy of feeling loved. As we get older, we don't "need" our parents to raise us or be in our lives, but how wonderful is it when they can be. Especially when you start to grow your family. Tune in and get to know a little bit more about where I've come from. I look forward to unpacking my journey more throughout the podcast, we're just getting started. A friendly reminder that every one has a story and things aren't always as easy as they look. "Have compassion for everyone you meet, even if they don't want it. What seems conceit, bad manners or cynicism is always a sign of things no ears have heard, no eyes have seen. You do not know what wars are going on down there where the spirit meets the bone." My mom came for a visit this summer, as she usually does this time of year. This time, no babies were being born just lots of fun with the toddlers running our house. We've gone on lots of adventures, from a trip up to Estes Park to ride the Gondola, to the City Park pool in Fort Collins, to just drinking bevvy's on the back patio watching lightning and enjoying each one another's company. My mom and I have been best friends since I was a little girl, we were all we had for a while there and we'll both be the first to tell you maintaining our relationship has not always been easy. There has been a lot of growth, grace, prayers, patience, impatience, growing pains and misunderstandings. But we choose to intentionally connect and have a relationship that goes deep and faces things head on. We're still working through life as we grow but every day we connect even if we're in different states. NOT everything in life has a major takeaway, to-do lists attached or SOP's to follow. Sometimes you just sit down with your girlfriends and reel about life, from current events in your own lives to nationwide hot topics. What to expect: These episodes will be completely random, starting with the topic of a random REEL we spin through our feeds and find. After we have some fun making said REEL, we're going to sit down, sip our coffee, water, or rosé, depending on the day, and just reel about life and see where it takes us. What not to expect: Major life lessons and tangible takeaways, while we can't promise you will take anything valuable with you, I guess you never know. We dare you to share this episode with one of your girlfriends you haven't talked to in a while, or maybe even an acquaintance you'd like to become friends with. Welcome to It's a lovely time. We will be sharing the good, the bad, and the ugly of our experiences in all areas of life each week, intertwining our shared experiences through motherhood, entrepreneurship, relationships, and wellness. We will do our best to stay on topic but make no promises. And as you'll find out, most of these areas don't stay in their lane so the topics will weave together each week. We're so glad you're here. In today's episode, we're talking about what brought us together, how to find genuine & authentic friendships, and cultivate the community you desire. You'll learn more about our friendship and how we feel about some of the tough topics to talk about Intentionality Boundaries Identify what you want it to look like and what we think it “should look like.” Honesty Vulnerability The depth and actively being a part of one another's lives Be mindful of your energy and where you're pouring it; having surface-level relationships is necessary & okay, but be conscious of how you protect your time & space. You might have a big circle but choose a close few to do life with. And remember, if you want genuine friendships, you have to be willing to put yourself out there. Some people have lifelong friends, but does that mean they are "good" friends for them? Also, you can and will get hurt; it's not always sunshine and butterflies. Finally, the duration of friendship does not determine the purpose for sharing and being mindful of oversharing/ not boastful but loving and growing. Do you feel yourself spiraling out? Check-in, where do you need to shift your energy? Takeaways & actionable steps: Write out your goals, and maybe journal about what you want in your friendships. Keep it simple. Are your expectations realistic and honest with where you are and what you have and want to give? Ask yourself, who are you interacting with each week? Is there a woman you see at practice or school pick up you might want to befriend? Do you see a group meeting that you want to participate in? Put yourself out there and her to coffee or ask for an invite to book club. It all comes down to being intentional and willing to have honest conversations about what you want & expect.
