The clock regulates metabolism and gene expression based on time of day. Dysregulation can lead to health issues like increased glucose levels. Peripheral clocks can operate independently of the central clock. Exercise timing can enhance performance and adaptation. Feeding patterns should align with activity for optimal health. Chronotype influences individual preferences for sleep and activity. Caffeine affects the sympathetic nervous system but doesn't phase shift the clock. Alcohol can disrupt circadian function and health. Adaptation of clocks can occur even in extreme light conditions. Circadian clocks significantly influence muscle and tendon health. Disruption of circadian rhythms can lead to metabolic issues. Aging affects the ability of circadian clocks to regulate gene expression. Inactivity does not stop circadian clocks, but it affects their function. Nutrition timing is crucial for maintaining healthy circadian rhythms. Exercise can enhance the function of circadian clocks in muscles. Understanding the communication between muscle and tendon is vital for rehabilitation. Time-restricted feeding may extend lifespan and improve health. Research on circadian rhythms can inform strategies for injury recovery. Maintaining a consistent activity and feeding schedule supports clock health. Chronotypes are classifications that reflect the natural sleep-wake patterns of individuals, helping to explain why some people feel more energized in the morning while others thrive in the evening. These patterns, deeply rooted in our biology, are influenced by the body's circadian rhythm, an internal clock that regulates when we feel alert and when we feel tired. Understanding chronotypes can be incredibly useful for optimizing productivity, well-being, and overall health by aligning daily activities with your body's natural rhythm.

In EPISODE 168 OF GROWING OLDER LIVING YOUNGER I talk with Jennifer Powers PhD, co-author with Luke Comer, of the newly released book, On the Origin of Being: Understanding the Science of Evolution to Enhance your Quality of Life. I found this book to be both a fascinating and captivating read, and an intensively researched and reference text. So the overall thesis of the book is that the environment that we live in today is radically different from the one in which we evolved. And the agricultural revolution when we stopped being hunter gatherers, and later the Industrial Revolution, exponentially accelerated the rate of change in our lifestyles. It takes a immeasurably long time for the evolutionary process to occur in the human body and we have not had the time for our bodies to genetically adjust to our environment. This evolutionary mismatch is a key factor in many of the disorders of modern life. Jenny Powers is a mom, a writer, a scientist and an athlete from Colorado. Jenny's PhD is in immunology, but she left academia to be a mom and to pursue a writing career. Up to that point, she had only written scientific journal articles and fiction for middle grade children. The opportunity to research and write on the origin of being with Luke Comer, allowed her scientific training and passion for writing to come together Episode Timeline 0:11 About evolutionary mismatch and lifestyle changes for better health 9:40 The impact of evolutionary mismatch on modern health. 15:42 Circadian rhythms and their impact on sleep and overall health. 22:34 Chronotypes (sleep types) and their evolutionary significance. 26:45 Nutrition and its impact on health, evolution, and dietary choices. 32:26 Aligning diet with evolutionary needs for optimal health. In this episode, we speak with Steven K. Malin to explore how your sleep cycle may contribute to a likely increased risk in the development of chronic conditions such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes. We learn how fat burns differently for early sleepers compared to night owls, and Dr. Malin walks us through how we can rewire our bodies through better sleep hygiene, exercise, and general lifestyle modifications. Dr. Malin is currently an Associate Professor of Kinesiology and Health at Rutgers University. The primary focus of his clinical translational research is to improve the well-being of people through preventing/treating type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Dr. Malin views exercise as a "drug" that when prescribed in an appropriate way (e.g. intensity/duration/frequency/mode) can optimize well-being. So just like that sponge sitting around for a long time, it becomes like a rock. And that little bit of water that we would put on the sponge initially worked fine, but over time you have to pour more water on. Beyond the Smile: Real Talk with Real People / Season Two, Episode Ten: A Dolphin, A Lion, A Bear, and A Wolf Walk Into A Bar … Confused? No worries at all! I will admit to being very confused when my amazing co-host broached the subject of sleep chronotypes. I am someone who always is looking for that “great night of sleep” and never quite seeming to find it. In addition, I have always been jealous of those who can go to the gym at 5a, or work late without caffeine and even those who can wake up without an alarm clock. Our discussion today centers around being able to identify your sleep chronotype, why sleep patterns are so important, and what you can learn about yourself based on when your body works best. Are we experts? Nope. Not yet! But we will talk through the impact of sleep on all aspects of your life, including your mental health. Check out Episode Ten as we dive into this very interesting topic and as always, we are curious to know what you think! Podcast Magazine Power Quotes From The Show Witnessing Radical Body Vitality Through Fasting "As you are able to improve the vitality of the body with a tool like fasting, you're going to be happier, process information better, and there will be parts of your brain that will be able to communicate with each other better and you'll be able to make sense of things. You'll be able to have a more powerful divine connection. Everything will work better and when we first start out on this journey, getting the vitality of the body is super important, especially for the brain and nervous system for radical health transformation." - Dr. John Lieurance Unpacking Fear vs Anxiety "I notice that so many people use the words, 'fear' and 'anxiety' often interchangeably and when I first became sober, I used to just be so consumed with fear. However, as I started to unpack it, I realized that fear is when a wolf walks through the door and your life is in danger; a totally natural, healthy response is to be in fear and get away in that moment. Anxiety is if you're sitting here and there's no wolf on the property and you're obsessively thinking about what would happen if a wolf walked through the door right now. Fear is, in its truest sense for me, something that is immediate and righteous but anxiety is imaginary and always future-based that has no basis in reality. So, how can we uproot that anxiety and have greater open awareness that keeps us grounded in this present moment?" - Luke Storey The Wounded Healer's Magic "The magic really happens when you take yourself out of victimhood and take ownership of your life. When we play the victim, we're just at the world's mercy and totally powerless. Opposite of that, when you transform into the wounded healer, you are the one that carries the real medicine that you get to share with others." - Cal Callahan Botanic Tonics | Feel Free Save 40% on your Botanic Tonics Feel Free order with the code WELLNESS40 at wellnessforce.com/FeelFree A feel good wellness tonic of ancient plants from the South Pacificand Southeast Asia where they've been used socially and in wellness for centuries.
