In today's episode, Meg and Michael sit down and talk about stealth expectations as referenced by Brene Brown in Atlas of the heart. How having systems and communication breakdowns in place help to keep us out of trouble when it comes to resentment and frustration. We are diving into our marriage journal question, sort of on accident and sharing vulnerably how we've grown and shifted to continually work on our marriage even when it was not easy. Our relationship is the number one priority in our home, aside from our relationship with God and the hard work is worth the amazing relationship we have today. Why stealth expectations used to start fights & unintentionally making Michael feel like i was upset The truth: Meg just wanted to get things done & needed help with the kids this advice can be applied to trips, holidays, days off, etc... When you intentionally communicate, you set the tone for the expectations of the day Our weekly touch base marriage check in - something that made you smile this week - 3 things grateful today - something that was difficult for you this week - any unspoken beef from prior week - is any thing i can send energy or good vibes to for the week ahead - what's one way i can be there without you having to ask this week Set yourself up for success, as a couple & a family, consider the following for special events, day trips, sunday chores or family vacas - what would each of you like to do/ accomplish - what are the non negotiables you'd like to do/ see/ experience And don't forget to check in- maybe things have changed Avoiding stealth expectations helps to avoid unspoken resentment friendly reminder: you always have the choice to rise to the occasion and your marriage can be as great as you hope for it to be, no matter where you come from or what your learned behaviors are. Identifying what's most important to you is a great place to start. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/its-a-lovely-time/message

In this episode we welcome the wonderful Norman Jopling to join us in RBP's sleek Hammersmith recording suite (yeah, right) and reminisce about his days as a budding "pop reporter" on Record Mirror. As a rhythm 'n' blues obsessive in early '60s London, Norman was the first music journalist to write about the "Rollin' Stones" — in May 1963 — and he tells Mark, Barney & Jasper about the Sunday night in Richmond when he first saw and heard Mick, Keith, Brian, Bill & "Charles Watts" blow the roof of the town's Station Hotel. He also talks about his Record Mirror colleagues Peter Jones, Ian Dove & the legendary Guy Stevens; about giving the 19-year-old Eric Clapton a lift on his scooter; and about the interviews he later did with Aretha Franklin and Jimi Hendrix. From there we return to the episode's broadly Stonesy theme, hearing audio clips from Robin Eggar's 1997 audio interview with the late Charlie Watts and discussing the man's unique drumming style and endearingly unpretentious personality. Also sadly lost to us this year — this week, to be precise — are reggae icon Robbie Shakespeare and "freaky deke" critic Greg "Ironman" Tate; we pay tribute to both these giants. With Norman pitching in, Mark talks us out with his thoughts on newly-added library pieces about Phil Spector and Burt Bacharach (both Maureen Cleave interviews from 1964) and Columbia's Clive Davis (a Loraine Alterman interview from 1974). Jasper rounds things off with remarks on Sophie Heawood's 2009 Snoop Dogg interview and Michael Gonzales' retrospective piece on Common's Electric Circus album. Many thanks to special guest Norman Jopling; keep an eye out for his book Shake It Up Baby. Please note that this episode was recorded before the death of Mike Nesmith, so we'll be paying tribute to him in the next episode.Pieces discussed: Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds, London R&B, The Beatles, Aretha Franklin, Jimi Hendrix, Charlie Watts audio, Sly and Robbie, Greg Tate, Phil Spector, Union Gap, Carol Grimes, Clive Davis, Gary Numan, Burt Bacharach, Keith Richards, The Smiths, Lisa Roxanne, Snoop Dogg, Common and John Miles.

We're culturally obsessed with scammers, con artists and fraudsters. People like Elizabeth Holmes and Bernie Madoff dominate headlines and then get films made and books written documenting what they did and how they did it. But behind the scammers are the victims: individuals who are struggling to recover their sense of safety, their identity … and their money. In July 2021, Isaiah Goodman was sentenced to 7 years in prison for defrauding clients out of more than $2.3 million dollars. He spent the money on a hot tub, a fancy house, two cars, a cruise … but it wasn't his money. That money belonged to -- among others -- Celisia Stanton and Rev. This year marks the anniversary of the shooting date of two iconic photographs, taken at the same location, forty years apart. In 1958, Art Kane created the image that has come to be known as “A Great Day in Harlem.” The photo presented fifty-seven of the world’s greatest jazz musicians gathered on a stoop on East 126th Street, in Harlem, New York City. Over time, this photo has become legendary: a movie was made about it, and many recreations have been staged around the world, but none as interesting as the photo that was made by the great Gordon Parks, on September 29, 1998, on the same stoop. On that day, organized by the editors of XXL Magazine, almost two-hundred hip-hop artists gathered to be part of a photograph that was called “The Greatest Day in Hip-Hop.”  With the 20th anniversary of the 1998 photo approaching, on today’s episode of the B&H Photography Podcast we will discuss the making of that image. We speak with two of the people responsible for producing the photo: the editor-in-chief of XXL at the time, Sheena Lester, and writer Michael Gonzales.  We also welcome back journalist and author Vikki Tobak to the show, whose upcoming book, Contact High: A Visual History of Hip-Hop, discusses the making of this image and, finally, we are joined by artist Fab 5 Freddy, who was a participant in the photo and shares his recollection of that incredible day in Harlem. Also, in the weeks to come, we hope to publish a bonus episode with Jonathan Kane, son of photographer Art Kane, who will bring his insight to the making of and the legacy of his father’s original photo. Robin Elander is the Executive Director of the Santa Barbara Summer Solstice Celebration. Recently she sat down with Mark and Patrick to talk about the upcoming 3-day festival and the workshop that runs for two months leading up to the big weekend. This year's celebration is June 22-24 in downtown Santa Barbara, ending up at Alameda Park for a well-attended parade after-party. We talked with Robin about the challenges of running such a creative endeavor and what it was like behind the scenes. Summer Solstice Parade began in 1974, as a birthday celebration for a popular artist and mime named Michael Gonzales. In subsequent years, their parade joined forces with a Summer Solstice Music Festival coordinated by Michael Felcher, sponsored by The Santa Barbara Museum of Art, staged at the Sunken Gardens to celebrate the longest day of the year. The Parade and Festival is the largest arts event in Santa Barbara County, drawing crowds of over 100,000 spectators from around the world. From these humble beginnings arose a celebration of life which, is like no other. This year's theme is Heroes and we're looking forward to seeing how the various floats and groups bring the theme to life. Robin says that Solstice has surprised her in how transitory the overall effort is and how people who've never thought of themselves as creative, come out of the workshops feeling a bigger, bolder version of themselves. Robin has been coordinating events since she was 16 in Jamestown, New York. She grew up in a beauty salon, much like the one we see in the movie Steel Magnolias. She says that the core of a community is their events, with the most visible of those being parades. Robin is involved in a lot of artistic ventures in Santa Barbara and works with the Office of Arts and Culture, the Community Arts Workshop and other organizations. She wears many hats as the founder of Global Good Impact and works tirelessly on behalf of many creative projects in Santa Barbara. She's currently working with a team to produce the Santa Barbara Timeline Mosaic. This project looks amazing.

To understand the impact of Greg Tate, one need only consult the words of fellow critic Michael Gonzales, who on the occasion of Tate's 50th birthday wrote: "For better or worse, if it were not for Greg Tate, there would be no Bonz Malone, Harry Allen, Joan Morgan, Kris Ex, Scott Poulson Bryant, Toure, Danyel Smith, Michael Eric Dyson, Karen R. Goode, Selwyn Seyfu Hinds, Smokey Fontaine, Jon Caramanica, Jeff Chang, Amy Linden, Tom Terrell, Mark Anthony Neal, Tricia Rose, Sasha Jenkins, DJ Spooky (aka Paul Miller), Dream Hampton, Miles Marshall Lewis, Aliya King, SekouWrites, Kenji Jasper, Oliver Wang, Cheo Hodari Coker, Keith Murphy or myself." Gonzales offers high praise for one of the singular critical voices of the last 30 years. The author of several books including the classic Flyboy in the Buttermilk: Essays on Contemporary America (1993) and the edited volume Everything But the Burden: What White People Are Taking From Black Culture (2003), Greg Tate joins Left of Black host Mark Anthony Neal (via Skype) in a rousing discussion of Black Science Fiction, being a "gourmand" of Black Culture and the significance of the late musical conductor Butch Morris. Tate is the longtime conductor of Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber, a former Village Voice Staff Writer and currently Visiting Professor of Africana Studies at Brown University.
